Hi I've heard so much about thess trails and I'm new to the area (NW
Houston) and I was wondering if the trails are currently rideable
and if I could get some directions. Also I'm planning to ride
tommorrow morning around 8am if its dry so if anyones interested.
Thanks, I'm also considering riding huntsville as an alternative so
any feedback on that would be much appreciated as well.

I managed a few hours of volunteer work at Little Cypress Creek
Preserve on Friday and I'm glad I did, since I was able to return a
little support to Dennis Johnston, the Parks Director. Dennis also
introduced me to Commissioner Eversole. It was a brief conversation
with the commissioner, no point in leaping in with all guns blazing -
but Dennis explained briefly our joint project to extend and adopt
the our trail and Commissioner Eversole expressed his support "get it
done" were his instructions to Dennis.
Dennis brought me up to date on park extension plans. He has walked
the creek from Collins Park to the trail with the GIS/GPS mapping
software and confirmed that all the creek bank is HCFCD either in fee
or easement, apart from a couple of small plots. I think one of the
plots is the Wimbledon Champions HOA plot; Dennis will provide me the
details and we can start working on these people. Candace: you may
finally get to leap into action at Wimbledon Champions! I will bring
you up to date next week when I get more details from Dennis.
Also, Dennis has followed up on the T.C. Jester expansion - the
bridge will definitely have trail access under, but he could not
confirm about side-walks. We will follow up with the county about
this.
Brandon has said he will be at Little Cypress Creek today - there is
another work party 930 - 230pm. If anyone else is able to go, please
sign in and introduce yourself and let them know why you are there.
Little Cypress Creek Preserve has a sandy trail along the creek, and
is only heavily wooded in the north part. There is of course
potential for some nice trails, but there will be a lot of work
needed. Dennis is looking for a group to adopt it, perhaps as a
wilderness preserve, but for the time being it will remain locked up
to keep 4-wheelers out. For the future, a trail is already there
along the creek - ready for the other connecting links in the Cypress
Creek Greenway.
Kevin
I hope to be at the work party on Friday, around lunchtime. Hope
that some others can make it - pls see my earlier message for details.
Welcome to the new members just signed up - we are now up to 70
people signed up.
The back trail is a mess at the moment, but sunny skies are ahead, so
we should be dried out soon.

This week's local supplement has been quite important. Here's another
article, which is the first mention in dispatches for the Cypress
Creek Greenway Project and Jim Robertson. The HP land is a critical
component to link our trail area with the land upstream of 249:
March 1, 2005, 10:15PM
Group wants park on HP land
Computer company poised to select winning bid for 462 acres
By KIM JACKSON
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle
Some northwest Harris County residents are lobbying for a public park
on a wooded tract of land put on the market by Hewlett-Packard three
months ago
The group, informally named the HP Park Project Committee, have a
plan for a natural park to encompass up to half of Hewlett-Packard's
462-acre site for sale at the southeast corner of Texas 249 and
Louetta Road.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer and technology firm put the land
up for sale Dec. 3.
Hewlett-Packard spokeswoman Brigida Bergkamp said a call for offers
began at the end of January and closed mid-February.
"We are currently evaluating the bids, and expect to make a decision
in the next several weeks," Bergkamp said. "It will be a careful and
thoughtful selection process. We've requested all offers to include
public benefit in the development plan, and the response has been
encouraging.
"This is one of a number of factors in the evaluation of the offers.
Other factors include the company's financial strength and alignment
with HP's strong relationship with the community," Bergkamp said.
The HP Park Project Committee is made up of representatives from the
Greater 1960 Tree Alliance, Cypress Creek Flood Control Coalition,
area municipal utility districts, homeowners associations and the
Legacy Land Trust organization.
Members said the southern half of the property is a perfect spot for
a park because it borders Cypress Creek, and a band of lakes and
ponds lie next to the creek. The land is undeveloped except for a few
trails and picnic areas.
"Now is the critical point to create our equivalent of Central Park
in New York City," said Dick Smith, a committee member and Cypress
Creek Flood Control Coalition president.
Committee members said they have faith in Hewlett-Packard's
commitment to the community and are not trying to dictate what
actions the company should take in its selling process.
Greenspace and trails
"We do hope the developer they select has a plan with a park," said
Jim Robertson, a committee member and chairman of the Cypress Flood
Control Coalition's Cypress Creek Greenway Project. "We'd love to see
greenspace and trails with public access."
Robertson said the Hewlett-Packard land is integral to the larger
Cypress Creek Greenway Project, a plan the Flood Control Coalition
has been developing for close to a year.
The project proposes to connect a series of new and existing "hub"
or "anchor" parks along Cypress Creek and Little Cypress Creek with
linear parks or trail systems.
The ultimate goal is to have a continuous line of public parks along
Cypress Creek from west of U.S. 290 to the point where the creek
joins with Spring Creek near U.S. 59.
If possible, the committee would like to share their ideas for a park
project with Hewlett-Packard officials before they make a decision,
said Jennifer Lorenz, executive director of Legacy Land Trust.
"The HP tract is the nicest habitat left in the northwest Houston
area and it would be wonderful to have a public park," Lorenz said.
Bergkamp said company officials could not talk about details of the
offers. She did not say whether or not HP officials were willing to
meet with committee members.
Linn Smyth, a committee member and Greater 1960 Tree Alliance
representative, said group members have contacted various homeowners
associations, garden clubs, MUD boards, and county officials to let
them know about the HP park plan and people are willing to pitch in
money and resources to make the project possible if the future
landowner is willing to donate property to Harris County.
'Our last chance'
"Our goal is to preserve the land and its trees, open space and
waterways, and to provide a peaceful refuge for creatures who fly or
walk on four or two legs," Smyth said.
"This is our last chance to do this."
Dennis Johnston, Harris County Precinct 4 Parks Director, said county
officials would be open to discussions about adding land to Precinct
4's park inventory if the company that purchased the Hewlett-Packard
property decided to donate part of the tract.
Precinct 4 has 10 large tracts — from developed parks to wetlands
that cannot be touched — along Little Cypress Creek and Cypress
Creek, Johnston said.
The Harris County Flood Control District and some MUDs own tracts of
land connecting those parks, but there is a missing link in the HP
area.
Lisa Marshall, a Hunters Valley resident who grew up in northwest
Harris County, said she hopes the park dream becomes reality.
"I have sentimental ties to the area," Marshall said. "My husband
used to work at Compaq (Hewlett-Packard's predecessor). We would take
walks along the trails and had to watch out for huge moccasins
sunning themselves on the creek banks. I would like to see that land
left untouched."
kimberlye.jackson@...
This article was in the local supplement of the Chronicle, 1 March.
It would be nice if some group members, particularly those who live
upstream around this location (Candace & Jimmy, Leann??) would show
up for a little time. This has been organized by Dennis Johnston, P4
Parks Director, who is proving to be a tremendous asset in trail
developement in our area, and we would like to give him some support
in return. This tract of land will also be a key element in the
Cypress Creek Greenway Project and the work party will be an
excellent opportunity to look for new trail mileage.

Volunteers needed for cleanup project at Precinct 4 park
By JASON KING
Chronicle Correspondent
Harris County officials said they are counting on community support
to help maintain a new park in Cypress, beginning with a cleanup
project March 11-12.
The Little Cypress Creek Preserve, a 56-acre wetlands area at Spring
Cypress and Telge, was acquired by Precinct 4 at no cost last year
through an agreement with Legacy Land Trust, a nonprofit conservation
organization.
Precinct 4 Park Administrator Dennis Johnston said the preserve will
be a place of nature for the community.
The size of the property gives the county several options for low-
impact developments such as bike trails. However, at this stage,
there are no plans for the park, Johnston said, except to start the
cleanup and ensure preservation.
Legacy Land Trust Executive Director Jennifer Lorenz said that years
of neglect have been hard on the property and four-wheeling
activities have destroyed much of the wetland area.
"We're finally glad to get this in the hands of Harris County because
we know they'll take care of it," she said.
The land trust worked on the project for six years, piecing the
property together from several smaller tracts of land that were owned
by different developers. On March 11, Precinct 4 Commissioner Jerry
Eversole will kick off the cleanup project as wildlife experts
catalogue all of the wildlife seen on the property.
Lorenz said most of the volunteer opportunities will be on March 12.
Volunteers will be removing invasive plant species and planting
indigenous ones. They also will be removing trash and debris from the
property.
Both cleanup days are 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Precinct 4 will provide lunch
for volunteers, so interested people and groups should call to make
reservations with the Parks Department at 281-353-8100.
They can call Legacy Land Trust at 713-524-2100.
I keep quoting IMBA guidelines for trails, which is the basis on
which we propose to manage the trails when we become "official". For
those who haven't seen it, take a look at this link to the IMBA trail
bible....
http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_building/trail_solutions.html
I'm in the process of obtaining a copy for our guidance on future
trails - I think that Jerry already knows a lot of this stuff, but it
will be good to have an authoritative reference.
In the link, note the sample page about managing TTF'S. We can have
a technical trail and still be open to all users.
Kevin
Good post Destinney: right on the money, and since all has gone
quiet since you posted this message, I presume that the majority
agree with you.
Liability is an enduring problem, but there is hope; Jack Brooks park
has excellent TTF's and is an officially sanctioned trail on a county
park. There is a new skate park in Collins Park, which has to be far
more dangerous than anything we do.
Trash: Please, please y'all try to do some trash pickup whenever you
can. I cleaned up a lot of trash at the trail entrance on my last
outing, which is a few weeks ago now; it only took a couple of
minutes while I was waiting for my buddy to adjust his bike and take
a leak.
I'm out of town at the moment. I hear its wet and soggy in Houston.
At least I've got a gym to work-out in where I'm staying, so I should
be in better shape than you lot!!

I'd like to see the trails fitted for riders of both advanced and beginner levels.
I'm very much a beginner rider so obviously I don't want there to be difficult obstacles littered all over the trail with no way around them. I spend enough time eating the ground or dragging my bike up, down, and around certain areas as it is. I'm also a runner. The logs and jumps that I really hate and/or fear on a bike, I LOVE when I'm running. So, I'm voting for the "give a person options" package. I don't care how many logs or jumps there are, as long as there is an easy way around them (easy as in, I don't have to run/ride an extra half-mile to by-pass, or trudge through ankle-deep water and mud). My only concern regarding the man-made sand jumps, teeter-totter thingy, and those things is the aesthetic appeal. The bowl and the immediately surrounding areas are not the most attractive, nor are they the best maintained (especially regarding litter control). And I hate to pose the mundane questions, but couldn't there be some legal and/or insurance problems if someone gets injured while having a go at a man-made obstacle? I don't want to lose out on the trails because some dummy or little kid's parents decide to sue the owner/county.
You all know my position and if you don't it's easy to figure out. The
trails in Houston are too tame. They need something to make them interesting
for people who've advanced beyond the beginner stage and man-made is
perfectly acceptable to me (after all--there aren't any moutains in
Houston). If you want beginner friendly build a go-around--or just stay on
the miles and miles of already existing paved hike-n-bike paths that all
over Houston.
The whole point of having trails in, or near to Houston is so you DON'T HAVE
TO drive 2 hours to get to them (and by the way--Rocky Hill ain't that
technical either). I say, if you want technical trails--you should be able
to go to your LOCAL trail. If built properly, TTF's are no more difficult to
maintain than any other part of the trail. Personally, I'd much rather fix
up a dirt jump or a ladder or teeter-totter than a muddy rutted up section
of trail any day.

Jerry...first of all, thanks for your continued commitment in maintaining the trails. With so many weekends involving racing, kids and other stuff, I tend to lose focus on this project. If you haven't noticed, that was a feeble attempt to excuse myself from not being there last Saturday. Pretty weak, huh?
My input on the trails...beginner friendly is the most important (that's coming from an "almost" expert racer). Why? If we want "technical" or more challenging trails, drive 2 hours to Rocky Hill Ranch. Or for that matter, go to Memorial Park. I don't believe Cypresswood can get too technical without building the appurtenances ourselves. That's too much to maintain. I also agree with the idea of having the trails cross...or come very near to each other so that "options" are available. 2 miles, 3 miles, 4 miles...or whatever. Just so that people have options to go different ways without back-tracking. So, hope that helps...the friendlier, the better.

If trails were to be built on the un-used section(s), we should consider an over-all master plan.
Do we want some single track that weaves back and forth from the road to the pond? Do we want a loop in this section? Do we want another figure eight? What do you think?

Good to hear from you guys. Please try to go along with Jerry this weekend and give him your views. On the main trail, we would like to follow IMBA guidelines and make alternate routes around TTF's - but still have some TTF's. The bowl is the freeriders domain and it looks like it needs some tlc, anytime you like. You could call for a separate bowl work party and repair the ramps.
Sorry, but I won't make the work party this weekend - I'll be in Big Bend racing in the desert.

I agree lets not make this like some norba short track, these are ALL-TERRAIN bikes after all. ie. log crossings, more technical areas and so on, wouldn't mind seein' some ladder bridges, like we use to have....

I agree lets not make this like some norba short track, these are ALL-TERRAIN bikes after all. ie. log crossings, more technical areas and so on, wouldn't mind seein' some ladder bridges, like we use to have....

As stated in the minutes from the last user group meeting,
I'd like some help laying out some new trails. We have a considerable amount of space on the West side of the detention pond where some great trails can be added.
Plan to come out and explore new possibilities on Saturday Feb 19 at or around 9:12am. This is mostly an exercise to understand what can be built and what should be considered before building it.
I hope to see you there. You will not need any tools, but wear gloves, boots and bring something to drink. I will bring some flags and we might lay out some new trail. I can sign for pay-dirt points, if needed.
Good question. We will definitely still be there at 8pm - better late than never. I would imagine that some of us will still be there after 9pm. No obligation to stay for the full duration - we all have lives to lead!
Subject: [cypresswoodtrailgroup] GROUP MEETING - 7 FEB 730PM
Thanks to those who have sent their regrets. I hope that we will still have a reasonable turnout. I am pleased to report that Cynthia Stewart, current President of GHORBA will attend. In addition to Jim Robertson, I have also invited Tom Petrick, who is a board member of Champion Forest MUD, and has some interesting views on a possible route through Raveneaux; Tom is another contact made through Dennis Johnston.
So, there's lots to talk about!
MEETING TIME: MONDAY 7 FEB 2005, 730PM
LOCATION: KROGER'S MEETING ROOM (UPSTAIRS)
KROGERS: CORNER OF CHAMPION FOREST AND CYPRESSWOOD DRIVES.
You can purchase a Starbucks coffee, or other food and refreshments downstairs. We'd better not steal the manager's stock of refreshments, like we did last time!

I haven't been out there for months. The last time I was there were
trees everywhere and sections of the trail were washed out over by
the creek.
I'd like to get my fat butt back on the bike and these trails are
the closest.
The file uploaded is the letter I wrote to the Community Assistance Department of Commissioner Eversole's office requesting modifications to the T.C. Jester bridge and road extension - you may recall I put out a request for input on this subject. You will note that the letter is written on GHORBA letterhead - I had GHORBA, Jerry and Candace look it over before sending it out.
I am working up a draft plan for the Cypress Creek Greenway Project with Jim Robertson, though I don't think this will be ready for your review until just before the meeting next week - I will post it as soon as I can.
