I wonder if it would be useful to keep track of Planning
Applications made to Chester City Council so that where there are
developments proposed such as major retail developments or commercial
improvements, or outline housing developments we can make comments
and suggestions as to measures that can be incorporated such as cycle
parking, and access, traffic controls etc.
Chester City Council posts all development control applications on
their web site, so it won't be necessary to actually visit the Town
Hall, unless it was necessary to see details of the detailed plans
and site plans etc.
Does anyone in the Cycle Campaign feel that they might be interested
to do this checking on a weekly basis?
The Highways Department always get planning applications for their
comments, but this might provide an added scrutiny, when awareness of
the person commenting from Highways (who may not be that sympathetic
to cycling matters)may not pick up on points that may be crucial.
Witness the development on the ring road that was allowed not to have
any cycling provision or access despite being less than 200 yards
from the canal towpath and potential safe cycle routes into the city
centre, or the Safeways supermarket that was allowed to get away with
cycling to the rear of the supermarket tucked away by the loading
bay - and surprise, surprise - no one uses them!!!!
