Tourists encouraged to see North Wales by bike

What:   Alun Ffred Jones AM and Minister for Tourism will ride part of the Lôn Las Cymru North to promote a new map, aimed at inspiring tourists to see more of North Wales by bike.

Where:  Waterloo Port, Lôn Las Menai, near Caernarfon.

Holidaymakers can combine a personal challenge with a low carbon trip of discovery in 2009 with a new map highlighting the National Cycle Network through North Wales.

The Lôn Las Cymru North challenge ride stretches from Holyhead on Anglesey to Llanidloes and the Severn Valley in the heart of Wales. It takes riders through Snowdonia National Park and the Cambrian mountains along traffic free railway paths, minor roads, forestry tracks and ancient coach roads.

Sustrans’ new map details how to undertake the entire 137-mile route – and accompanies the Lôn Las Cymru South which continues to Cardiff and Chepstow - as well as providing numerous options for a day ride. The map also highlights most of the other walking and cycling paths in north-west Wales and includes all the major tourist attractions.

Welsh Assembly Minister Alun Ffred Jones will ride part of the Lôn Las Cymru North at Waterloo Port, Lôn Las Menai, near Caernarfon, on August 12 at 11am.

Alun Ffred Jones said: “Wales has a well-deserved reputation as a destination for active holidays and the country is full of places perfect for exploring by bike. This new map also links to the Welsh Assembly Government’s wider commitment to make it easier for people to be more active and healthy as part of daily life.

“I hope it will encourage both visitors and locals alike to get out on two wheels on Lôn Las Cymru North, but remember, you don’t have to do the whole route in one go!”

Cllr W Gareth Roberts, Environment Portfolio holder at Gwynedd Council, said: “Encouraging local residents and visitors to Gwynedd to make the most of the fantastic cycling opportunities the county has to offer is a priority for the Council. We hope people from across Gwynedd and beyond will get on their bikes and enjoy the various cycling routes.

“There are a number of interesting cycling routes to enjoy across Gwynedd, and we hope more and more people will get active and make the most of these routes with the help of the new Sustrans map.”

Sustrans Area Manager for North Wales, Glyn Evans, said: “There are few other rides which offer such a variety of landscapes in such a short space of time, whether cyclists zip through it in three days or enjoy their surroundings at a more leisurely pace over the course of a week. The route is fully signed and easy to follow when combined with the new map, so riders will be able to devote all their effort tackling the odd steep hill or enjoy soaking up the views.”

The thoughts and concerns of women, gathered throughout the year, will be used to inform our approach to UK governments with proposals on how to help more women get out and about on bikes, to the benefit of their health, the environment and our economy.

Gall pobl ar eu gwyliau gyfuno her bersonol gyda thaith ddarganfod carbon isel yn ystod 2009 gyda map newydd sy’n amlygu'r Rhwydwaith Beicio Cenedlaethol drwy Ogledd Cymru

Mae taith her Lôn Las Cymru yn ymestyn o Gaergybi ar Ynys Môn i Lanidloes a Dyffryn Hafren yng nghanolbarth Cymru. Mae’n tywys beicwyr drwy Barc Cenedlaethol Eryri a mynyddoedd Cambria ar hyd llwybrau rheilffordd di-draffig, isffyrdd, llwybrau fforest a lonydd hynafol y goets fawr.

Mae map newydd Sustrans yn rhoi manylion ynglŷn â sut i wneud y daith 137 milltir gyfan - ac yn mynd gyda map Lôn Las Cymru: De sy’n parhau i Gaerdydd a Chas-gwent - yn ogystal â darparu nifer o ddewisiadau eraill ar gyfer teithiau dydd. Mae’r map hefyd yn dangos y mwyafrif o’r llwybrau cerdded a beicio eraill yng ngogledd orllewin Cymru yn ogystal â’r prif atyniadau twristiaid.

Bydd Alun Ffred Jones, Gweinidog yng Nghynulliad Cymru, yn beicio rhan o Lôn Las Cymru: Gogledd yn Waterloo Port, Lôn Las Menai, ger Caernarfon, ar Awst 12 am 11am.

Dywedodd Alun Ffred Jones: “Mae gan Gymru enw da haeddiannol fel cyrchfan ar gyfer gwyliau egniol ac mae’r wlad yn llawn mannau perffaith i’w harchwilio ar gefn beic.  Mae’r map newydd yma hefyd yn cysylltu i ymrwymiad ehangach Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru i’w gwneud hi’n haws i bobl fod yn fwy egniol ac iachach fel rhan o fywyd bob dydd.

“Gobeithiaf y bydd yn annog ymwelwyr a phobl leol fel ei gilydd i deithio ar ddwy olwyn ar Lôn Las Cymru: Gogledd, ond cofiwch, does dim rhaid i chi wneud y siwrnai gyfan fel un daith!”

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd W Gareth Roberts, daliwr Portffolio yr Amgylchedd yng Nghyngor Gwynedd: “Mae annog trigolion lleol ac ymwelwyr â Gwynedd i fanteisio i’r eithaf ar y cyfleoedd beicio gwych sydd gan y sir i'w cynnig yn flaenoriaeth i’r Cyngor. Ein gobaith yw y bydd pobl o bob rhan o Wynedd a thu hwnt yn mynd ar eu beic ac yn mwynhau’r gwahanol lwybrau beicio.

“Mae nifer o lwybrau beicio diddorol i’w mwynhau ledled Gwynedd a gobeithiwn y bydd mwy a mwy o bobl yn defnyddio’r llwybrau hyn gyda chymorth map newydd Sustrans.”

Dywedodd Rheolwr Ardal Sustrans ar gyfer Gogledd Cymru, Glyn Evans: “Nid oes llawer o deithiau eraill sy’n cynnig gymaint o amrywiaeth o dirweddau mewn cyfnod mor fyr o amser, boed y beicwyr yn gwibio drwyddi mewn tridiau neu’n mwynhau eu hamgylchedd yn fwy hamddenol dros gyfnod o wythnos.  Mae’r arwyddion i’w cael ar hyd y daith ac mae’n hawdd ei dilyn gyda’r map newydd, felly gall y beicwyr dreulio eu holl amser yn mynd i’r afael ag ambell i allt serth neu’n mwynhau’r golygfeydd.”
