Re: [cyclomania] MERSEY RAIL AND CYCLES.

Roy - I have been using Merseyrail once/ week for the last few months bwetten Chester and Liverpool and have usually seen cyclists using the service. Not only do Merseyrail welcome them, there seems to be no animosity between the cyclists and other users, although I have seen a couple of "near misses" when they dismount the train together with pedestrians. There can be issues at James St station as the main exit is via lift rather than escalator, but generally it works well.

I have never seen a trains "bike full" - undoubtedly helped because trains run every half hour from Chester. And the fare is reasonable (cheap day return for £ 2.90 for an "oldie" with or without bike).

I reckon that we should give the Arriva and Virgin franchises to Serco (who run Merseyrail)!

Talking to a member of staff I gathered cyclists are regarded much as any other classification of user - with courtesy and consideration.

It seems at the weekend it is nothing to see clubs of up to thirty riders getting onto a single train.  If there is extra heavy use at any one period, there is the option of waiting for the next train fifteen minutes later - or the ferryboat.  And for the ancients, there is not only the benefit of a free pass, but the bikes go free as well!.

Now you can't say fairer than that!
