Thanks Joe
It was good to touch wheels with you recently - in the nicest way of course!
There appear mixed messages in this two page story from New York, One of the lessons appears to be that far more fundamental societal changes need to take place if cycling is to thrive. The should include stiffening the law to place a much higher duty of care on all road users - proportionate to the harm they are capable of causing if a collision occurs.
So, lower default speed limits in selected areas, and presumptive driver liability incorporated in all motor insurance policies. What we need to rid ourselves of is the notion that all government needs to do is slap a bit of white paint here, drop a kerb there, and steer cyclists as far away as possible from the direct route to where they wish to go - and all will be honky dorry.
There have been many unheeded lessons for over a century......but have we learned anything at all ????
