Madam/Sir
The disturbing evidence of global warming and its consequences if we do not act now, is mounting daily. Even within the lifetime of our grandchildren the effects will be profound unless we radically reduce CO2 emissions. The aptly named Stern Report could not have spelled it out more clearly - our lifestyles must change radically if global catastrophe is to be averted.
On traffic policy government in Wales at all levels is dismally failing to adapt to the crisis we face. It continues headlong into a policy of increased car usage and the building of more roads to accommodate it. This is a policy of madness when we should be seeking to reduce, not increase, motor traffic.
Locally, many journeys could be undertaken by bicycle to reduce carbon emissions and congestion. But urban utility cycling faces government inertia, and even hostility, everywhere. In Llandudno we have the bizarre situation of the banning of the National Cycle Route to its North Shore where it would have the greatest benefit. But at the same time Conwy CBC has given the green light for a town centre multi-storey car park, with no thought to the traffic it would generate. All over Wales similar follies are occurring.
The local government elections are due in May. Anyone who cares for the future of their children would do well to question their candidate's policy on environmentally sustainable development. No current councillor should feel that their position is a sinecure for their retirement years. Caning has been banned in schools. Fortunately for some failing councillors it's been retained at the ballot box. .
