Consider the attached pic advertising the Ford Galaxy. It comes from today's THE INDEPENDENT. It employs a Disney image of an idealised street scene.
No one knows better than the advertising industry what lies at the heart of our desires. Often it knows more about us than we know about ourselves.
Look deeply into this scene. It contains many subliminal messages aimed at selling a car. But seeks, almost by stealth, to disguise the presence of the car itself. It shows the dashboard, but has to distract even from that by including nature in the forms of a caterpillar and a lady bird.
So when, as cycle campaigners, we feel desperate that nothing will ever change, and believe we have the whole motor-psyche against us - it's just not true. The mind from the interior of a car is schizophrenic. It wants to be inside when it's outside - but at the same time it wants to be outside when it's inside.
Therefore, rational decision-making by government to limit the use of the car and assist cycling prosper, is beyond both its wit, and its ability. I fear that other traumatic events outside government control will dictate the inevitable return of massed cycling. But on those - I pass.
Could it be the motor industry is forecasting its own future in this scene - almost absent from town and village life?
