Madam/Sir
Meredydd Hughes, convicted Chief Constable of South Yorkshire, and former ACPO lead officer for road policing, has shown that extolling road safety mantra means nothing when actual performance places the lives of others at risk.
In an earlier broadcast video he rightly pointed out that roads are for horse riders, the elderly, children and the disabled, as well as for cars. So far so good.
But how interesting - and significant in the minds of many on two wheels no doubt, that he failed to mention cyclists. Undoubtedly the most vulnerable of all road users apart from equestrians, cyclists unlike equestrians have to cope with urban as well as rural roads - and are to be found in far greater numbers.
This omission, coming from the very heart of road safety enforcement culture in this country, serves only to confirm the widespread belief that cyclists are invisible in more ways than one.
