Re: [cyclomania] FW: Don't let motorists dictate the agenda

Thanks for this, Sam.

Discussion is also taking place on CTC's Right to Ride Yahoo group line.  Responding to petitions is one way, but another is not letting ill informed letters to the local press go unchallenged.  Cycling is relevant to a whole range of public issues, and much advantage can be gained by climbing on these bandwagons as they rattle by.

My belief is that well articulated letters can assist in changing mind-sets - and you can find it quite surprising how many share your own ideas.

A letter writing rota ?  And if one of the group is good at constructing them.....why not he/she write them and others affix their signatures.  Not in any way dishonest if the signatory agrees with the sentiments expressed.

Regards

Time for Cyclists and Pedestrians to Speak Out!

An online petition to 10 Downing Street objecting to Road Tax recently grabbed headlines for passing the 1M mark.  Unfortunately, the petition doesn’t propose an alternative, it just complains about the cost. If you feel that its right that steps are taken to manage car use and encourage alternatives, then consider signing this opposing petition instead:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/TRACK-CARS/

It only takes a minute to sign up!

Introduction to the petition:

Having recently received an email asking me to sign the a petition to scrap the vehicle tracking policy, I'd like to propose the opposite. I strongly feel that driving is a privilege and not a right. There are simply too many cars on the road and too many people making journeys by car when they could simply walk or cycle. Thousands die every year in road accidents and many, like myself, are forced to risk our lives in trying to get to work in a sustainable manner. We are dependent of foreign oil and the wars to secure such resources will only get worse if we don't curb our driving habits. Driving started off as a freedom but as we've redesigned our land around the auto mobile, rather than the pedestrian, it's become nearly a necessity. It is, however, perfectly possible to live a successful, car-free life. I would like to advocate that this become the norm and if this law helps driving to become even less attractive than it already is, I'm all for it.
