Following Brian's comment re the surfacing or not of the Racecourse path I think we need to discuss this further at the next meeting. Flintshire, Cheshire (& Chester City) seem to adopting very different approaches. Flinshire does not use fine stone chippings though Cheshire often does (the excuse on the Year "2000 Sustrans path to the Welsh border was that it would be harder wearing.) I know which bit I prefer to cycle on.
Surely it is for cyclists to make their presence known to pedestrians not to rely on the noise of surface dressing. I think the small section along the Little Roodee car park is potentially dangerous to young cyclists - it is too loose. The North Wales Path Prestatyn, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno etc does not have a stone chipping finish.
I think that Chester City could make better use of their money (when and if they get it) by not adding stone chippings.
Any
other views ?

MaryI’m not quite sure what you are referring to by “the Dee path” but the original proposals envisaged two sections. Section one is the partly completed Promenade from the Groves to The Cop while the second goes from The Cop to Hawarden Bridge. Eventually the path on the other side of the river will also be extended from the Ferry Lane foot bridge (where it now ends) out to Hawarden Bridge.I was consulted on this as local CTC Secretary and reported back to the Campaign at that time with copies of the proposals. The intention was to surface the section from the Groves to The Cop with fine stone chippings on top of black tarmac. The parts round the Little Roodee and The Cop are both finished in this way. This is the section that is expected to get the greatest pedestrian use hence the name Riverside Promenade. The stone chipping finish is designed to give pedestrians an audible warning of the approach of cyclists and secondly it was hoped that this finish would reduce cycle speed over this sensitive section. My experience is that it achieves these objectives although I have some concern about maintenance. It was not the original intention to use this finish on the sections from The Cop to Hawarden Bridge. These sections were intended to be as they are currently finished. I am not aware that there has been a change of plan but if there has been then we should lodge an objection with Flintshire who have responsibility for the contract for the whole of that section, including the part of the river bank in Chester from The Cop to the City/national boundary.Given the reasoning behind the use of fine stone chippings on the section from the Groves to The Cop I approved the proposal on behalf of the CTC along with a number of other design features we were consulted on. The only reason the part round the racecourse Roodee has been left as black tarmac is that the City Council ran out of money, but even then they consulted with the CTC on ways to save money while getting the path open. I stand by the original views expressed on this matter and see no reason to object at this stage. This time last year Councillor Jim Latham was the Portfolio Holder and Tony Clark the Principal Projects Officer for the Riverside Promenade but of course there may have been personnel changes since then. Finally can you tell me who harryhat@... is? The name keeps appearing on email circulation lists that come from you. I am intrigued.-----Original Message-----
