I take my bike on the train regularly and rarely have any problems but I do have to be assertive.  Arriva Trains Wales and Merseyrail are normally great with most guards casting aside the 2 bike max rule.

 

Virgin can be more exacting where pre booking is essential. Voyageurs are fine - they can take 4 bikes, hanging from 'meat hooks' and you dont need the help of the guard to get on - knowing which end of the train is the key and you can tell this by looking at the front of the train as it arrives in the station. A horizontal yellow bar on the leading power unit means that the bike area is at the other end of the train.

 

Pendolinos are a pain (fortunatley only two a day pass along the North Wales line.) The trains are long and the guard has to open a door to let you on and off - often fraught with problems.

 

Many years ago I failed to meet the Conway Valley connection so requested the staff to provide a taxi which would accommodate my bike - they did and I was taken through to Blaneau F.

 

The basic problem is that capacity is limited, although last week I was pleased to see that the single units have had some seats taken out doubling the bike carrying from 2 to 4.

all aware.  He's gone to the trouble of writing; he and everyone else likely
to fall into this trap deserve our support.
