You really shouldn’t confuse silence with inaction or, by implication, disparage the work of others. In towns and cities across the country there are cyclists working in their own ways to improve the lot of fellow cyclists and to encourage cycling. The fact that many choose to use alternatives, other than the megaphone, to achieve their and our goals should not lead to criticism. It is when people work with the means that they are the most comfortable with that progress is made. This may mean organising exhibitions, writing to the papers, engaging in quite diplomacy with elected members, lodging objections to planning and highway proposals, getting involved with cycling bugs or organising a “cycling bus” to the local school. These, and many others, are all valuable activities that we should all be encouraging whether or not the people involved have the time or inclination to post emails on an open egroup.
Now don’t take this as criticism of your work. Your involvement in getting the cycling message across is second to none. Indeed you may well be underestimating the beneficial effect you have. Your message on Llandudno was received loud and clear by many in this part of the world, and I am aware of a number of people who, as a result of your email, lodged comments with Sustrans and/or visited the consultation. Isn’t that better than simply posting a message on an egroup?
Similarly Audrey and her “team”, whom you rightly praise, have worked wonders in keeping the CDTS issue at the forefront of public awareness, much to the annoyance of certain elected members who give every impression of trying to sneak the CDTS through when no one is noticing
However anyone reading your posting might think that these were the only campaigning issues in Chester. How wrong they would be. Take a look at the Cycling Campaign meeting minutes on the Campaign website http://www.chestercycling.co.uk/ to see the range of stuff being done and campaigning being undertaken: from extra links to the Millennium cycle route (NCR 5), through additional cycle parking, cycling routes through Chester City Centre, the Northgate development, promotional leaflets, toucan crossings, the Riverside Promenade route, family/novice bike rides, right up to involvement with Granada TV on filming short cycle routes in Cheshire and North Wales. With so many issues being dealt with by a small group of dedicated cyclists, all with other commitments, is it any wonder that they are not constantly sitting at their computers posting messages?

is golden ?
Messages such as yours are heartening, Nic.
It's always nice to know about others sharing the daily challenge of getting the cycling message across. There's a song that used to lap across the airways - 'Silence is Golden'. Not in my book when its a cycle campaigning group line
I recently dropped a message onto this one requesting help with a promenade cycling issue. Silence, apart from one of our members saying he was opposed to it - despite it already being enjoyed in safety by many thousands along the coast of North Wales. I requested clarification - silence.
No, silence is not always golden. In fact in some circumstances it can make the difference between a courtesy and discourtesy.
Many in the community find it easy to oppose cycling and all it stands for. It take no effort - or imagination. Just a stubbon refusal to face the real world. It takes much more effort to promote cycling. A personal thanks for your efforts, Nic.

Always stopping to chat to the counters - they have a box where they can make notes about suggestions of the need to extend to Mickle Trafford, put in additional access points, opposition to sharing with buses etc.

12 hour counts are at Canal Crossing/Deva Link Bridge and Brook
Lane/Northgate Ave Chester 21st 27th Sept
5 Hour counts usually at Brook Lane/Northgate Ave 8th 15th 20th 29th Sept
These may be at diff. times but the chap I spoke to went for a break at 10 & resumed work at 11 until Midday. If you enter the Northgate Park then turn back and go towards Blacon it counts twice and the more numbers the better those wanting the Delamere route funded the stronger hand they will have.
Please circulate these dates.
The letter in press is to scotch rumour that CDTS had folded, no doubt put about again by some CDTS fanatic. The Chester TUC secretary had heard this and let me know.
