Bike Week Events in Chester   Message List

The Chester Cycling Campaign is launching its biggest ever range of
activities for Bike Week this year, which takes place from June 12th to June
20th this year.

A press release was sent to all of the local papers, but unfortunately the
free paper, the Chester Standard, did not print our article about Bike Week.
This is a shame as many people look to the Standard to find out about our
events. So, word of mouth may have to be employed instead.

Here is a copy of the press release for your information, and you may wish
to share these details with anyone you know that may be interested!

Cyclists Announce a Wide Choice of Events for Bike Week

National Bike Week takes place this year from June 12th to June 20th, and
Chester Cycling Campaign has a planned a wide range of activities to mark to
mark the event. Plans include bike maintenance sessions, family bike rides,
and working parties on Chester’s section of the National Cycle Network.

Let Dr Bike Help You Get Your Bike in Shape for the Summer!

Just got your bike out the shed for the first time this year? Get 'Dr.
Bike' to check it over on Saturday, June 12th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in
the Town Hall Square. Cyclists will be able to get a free bike check-up and
advice on maintenance from experienced riders. The results will be recorded
on a bike 'MOT' sheet, so you know just what to do for trouble-free riding.

Family Bike Rides

During Bike Week the Chester Cycling Campaign is organising two family cycle
rides, exploring different parts of the local traffic-free cycling network.

The first ride is about 12 miles in total, and takes place on Sunday, June
13th. The route heads out to the east of Chester using the canal towpath
towards Waverton, and then heading along Platts Lane to the Plough Inn for a
lunch stop. Bring a picnic or sample the menu at the Plough Inn.

On Sunday, June 20th, there will be a second ride exploring the canal tow
path route north of Chester towards Ellesmere Port. Don't forget to bring
food for a picnic, as this 16 mile ride features a lunch stop at the Boat
Museum. The Mersey River Festival also takes place on this weekend, so
cyclists will be able to get a good view of the action from the Boat Museum.

Both rides are fully insured by the Chester Cycling Campaign, and are
suitable for families with reasonably fit children aged 7 or over on their
own bikes - or you are welcome to bring your little ones in bike seats or
trailers. The meeting point for both rides is outside the entrance to the
Northgate Arena. Gather between 10:15 am and 10:25 am, ready for a 10:30
start.

Help Look After the Millennium Route on a Working Party!

Cyclists and walkers will also get an opportunity to support the National
Cycle Network's Millennium Route through Chester by participating in one of
the two working parties to be held during Bike Week. Organised by SUSTRANS,
the environmental transport charity, these will focus on completing work on
the new Elmwood Road access point to the cycleway. Volunteers will help
build a shallow ramp to enable cycles, wheelchairs, pushchairs and walkers
to get onto the cyclepath. The work will include clearing undergrowth and
creating hand rails for the ramp.

These working parties will take place on Wednesday, June 16th, and Saturday,
June 19th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on each day. Refreshments will be
provided. Contact Simon Brown on 403960 for further details.

Chester Cycling Campaign is fighting for a better, greener city for all.
Chester Cycling Campaign supports the Government's aim to quadruple bike use
by 2012, and to integrate cycling with walking and public transport.
Locally, we are fighting for:

100 kms of designated cycle routes
20 mph speed limits
safe routes to schools
better city centre access for cyclists
bike contra-flows in one-way streets
bike parking in every shopping area
free carriage of bikes on trains.
