This is the flyer announcing Youth Pick-up that CUDO is sponsoring for the
month of October. Please print out a few copies and post in
Charlottesville, especially if you know of good places where kids and
parents will see. If everybody just posted 5 flyers, that would be a lot
of publicity for the program and for CUDO generally - so we would really
appreciate your help to do that.

Thanks to all the officers who made this a reality in a short period of
time - Guy, Ginny, Dawn, Sushil have been terrific. If you have any
problems with the file, please contact Sushil (ss3bd@...).

Thank you for your help!

Sally Struthers has mean flick and her breakmark backhands really have
improved, but she has a win-at-all-costs attitude which would not make
her good choice for Youth ultimate.

Unfortunately, I have my own 10-month-old pre-youth to take care of so
I can't commit the time. I'll bring him out when he learns to hold the
mark.

Hi, C'ville Planners -

The CUDO officers think there is enough support in town to have a time for youth pick-up.  To do this we need a responsible adult who is willing to commit to attending pick-up.  By "attending" I mean just show up - you don't have to referee but are only there in case of an emergency.  I realize this is a committment so I propose have 4 weeks of youth pick up running in october.  This would be about 6-8 hours of volunteering (1.5-2 hrs each game).  If you are interested, please let me know when you would be available so we can set the time around you and find a field.  If you would be willing to even do one week, you could let me know in case we need to split it up (though I would prefer not to).

Please seriously consider your schedule and see if you could find two hours a week for the children.  Don't make me hire Sally Struthers...

my apologies that these are so late.  Please feel free to send me your ideas about what you think the C'ville Ultimate community needs and we'll work on them.

We'll be holding a Winter League meeting in the near future (I expect before the end of October) to discuss policies, coordinate volunteer efforts, etc.  So feel free to think about the issues discussed at the CUDO meeting and formulate your opinions about them.

Progress so far:
* Dawn is reserving fields for Winter League today
* Sushil has drafted an advertising letter and is working to get info about CUDO on the radio
* Dawn and Ginny are meeting to update the website

Thank you very much for attending the meeting and I'm looking forward to another great year for CUDO.

1. DAY: Sat or Sun?
2. TIME: 10-12? 12-2? 2-4?

Bonus questions:
3. are double headers okay or too much (think of the new players on your
team too)?
4. how do you feel about having 2 times slots/week?

PLEASE help us make this very important decision. I would especially like
to hear back from the college representatives.

Please e-mail me by Wednesday night. Dawn is already reserving the fields

Fellow Cville Ultimate Players,

It's time once again to get together and discuss ultimate in the
Charlottesville area. The 2004 Annual CUDO Meeting will be held Thursday,
September 2nd at 8:00 pm. This past year has been very successful, but
there's definitely room for improvement. We will be discussing the issues
outlined in the attached agenda which include electing officers, securing
fields and determining league policies. If you feel any additional issues
need to be discussed, e-mail me or call me and we can add them to the
current agenda. Please let me know if you will be attending so I know how
many people to expect and so you can receive directions to the meeting
location.

Sounds good.  Thanks for getting people thinking about things.

Since the students start back on August 27th, how's Tuesday, August 31st at 7:00pm for a meeting time?  We'll figure out a location when it gets closer.  Any objections?

Also, I'll try to get a preliminary agenda together by the beginning of August for everyone to review.

I came across the planning committee minutes for last year and realized we
held the meeting at the beginning of June. Dawn is already well underway
planning summer league (she has done a great job of being organized and
getting the ball rolling). Also it would be hard to get the attention of
the college teams since the semester is over (though not impossible, there
are still representatives around). So it seems that now isn't the ideal
time to have another planning meeting.

I propose we set a time in late August/early September and ensure we have
representatives from the college and club teams. I think we need to
discuss:
a) CUDO goals (evaluating how we did last year and what we would like to do
in the coming year)
b) field space issues
c) nominations and elections of officers (last year we voted on President
and Field Director? Dawn has suggested we add a separate web master. We
could discuss if we think those offices are appropriate and helpful to
CUDO).
d) procedures regarding summer and winter leagues (see if we can agree on
guest, registration, etc. policies for the upcoming leagues)

What do you think?

Thank you for your input. I have attached a file that has 3 versions of
the summer league form. Not all of the formatting is correct but I am more
concerned with the substance. here's a run down of the versions:

1) has minor modifications on the old form.

2) has a new idea of trying to incorporate throwing skills into experience.
ex: a "handler" for the women's team might not be a "handler" for a club
nationals team.

3) adds in a category for Catching. I need some help filling in the
descriptions.

So what you do with this is up to you. Let me know which one you like,
what changes work, what is confusing, what's stupid. Arguably the
registration form isn't that important, but it's worth doing a good job on
it. My final draft is due to el Presidente Kusy by Friday (I think).

skills/experience questions to be more effective. Please get back to me by
Wednesday, Apr. 14th with any suggestions. I have attached the WL
registration as an example. Please let me know your opinion on these
issues:

1. throwing: could levels 1-3 be shortened to 1=just starting to throw and
2= throws improving?
2. throwing: how could descriptions for levels 4-6 be more helpful? should
we add another level? what do you think about 4= throws improving against
a mark, 5 = solid force-side throws 6= solid force-side throws and a few
breaks, 7 = experienced handler?
3. experience: is 6= traveling club player a helpful description?
4. Should we add a question of "What position do you usually play (handler,
mid, deep)?" or "What position do you prefer to play?"?

Thanks for your help.

Ok. I'll put my name in for this "election." I suspect that no one
else will put in their name! So this is more probably volounteering
than anything else. I do agree about contactng parks and rec and
think that working with them works for a couple of reasons including
fields.

I will say that I travel frequently so if there are regularly

Should I wait for the green light from the "yearly frisbee meeting"
or just go ahead and get started?

Guy,

Here is some info you'll find interesting.
In May 2003 I hosted the first Juniors Ultimate State
Tournament in Virginia (JUST VA) in Charlottesville.
We had 8 teams. 2 teams from Charlottesville
(Monticello and Western Albemarle). Western Albemarle
finished in third place. For more info see:
http://www.student.virginia.edu/~ultimate/RichFranck/justva/justva.htm

This year the state championship is being held in
Richmond. Currently there is a search on for teams
that want to participate. Those interested in Youth
(juniors) ultimate should join this yahoogroup:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VA-Jr-Ultimate/

There are also small groups that play ultimate at
Tandem Friends, Albemarle and Charlottesville High
School, but so far they are not organized enough to
send teams to tournaments. The biggest problem is
when the student organizer graduates and no one fills
his/her shoes.

-Rich

It seems like ultimate in the adult leagues is in a growth period. I
am wondering what can be done about invigorating youth ultimate. I
have a personal interest in this, as my son Matthew would like to
have some people his own age to play. However, it is a reasonable
assumption that people who learn as kids will want to play as adults.
So it helps ensure that there will be Ultimate in Charlottesville in
the future. So the rest of you should be interested as well.

Other that the team at Monticello HS, there doesn't seem to be that
much activity in the area. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am thinking that it might be good to start with a youth clinic and
if that were successful, starting some regularly scheduled pickup
games. Since my skills are not great, I would need some help with
teaching the clinic, but I would be willing to do organizational
things to get this going.

So:
1. What do people think of the idea?
2. Who wants to help?

Thanks,

Guy

I had put in a wide-ranging request for fields for summer league, just in
case, and much to my surprise we got all of the dates i asked for.

We have the three fields at Walton Middle School every thursday evening
from June 10 to Aug 19, and three Sundays to choose from for a final
tourney: Aug 1, 8, and 15. I really think we can get six teams for SL this
year.

We also have at least one Walton field every Saturday and Sunday from now
until Nov 21, for MKF, BRU, and community team practices, and possibly
pickup if there is a consensus to move it there (the DT field is the
windiest spot in town and the ground is like cement).

Any volunteers yet to run summer league? Braden, darling of the local
media, can i volunteer you?

We've gotten some great press lately, btw -- winter league photos in both
Cville and Hook, a spread on Steve in the Hook, and next week Cville should
have an article on the UVA women's team (currently ranked #1 in the
country). Perhaps we can make links on the ulty webpage to these pieces and
use them to get more sponsors for summer league?

I didn't realize the new community team's schedule was already set for
Sundays at noon. Obviously it would be a conflict to have them both at the
same time, but it would also be a conflict to have pickup saturday and the
practice sunday, as many people (i assume) would only come to one or the
other.

Any suggestions? Perhaps having pickup at 2pm Sunday following the new
team's practice, so they could just stay for pickup? Or should we do that
as easier pickup and have more competitive pickup on Saturdays?

When is this new team starting these practices?

I don't think weekday pickup is possible until DST, which isn't until April
4 (Fools Fest weekend). Maybe we should just stick to saturdays at noon
until then, then add a weeknight pickup after that weekend.

Great job Elvis on getting this discussion started. I think that Saturdays
are the way to go. With the new Community Team (sponsored by CUDO) starting
up on Sunday's at 12 I would hate to have two ultimate opportunities
conflicting...as the days get longer any chance of weekday pickup?

Hey folks. Now with winter league done, i think we should establish a
regular pickup schedule and stick to it. Should we stay with saturdays at
noon, or go to sundays since people are used to the winter league schedule?

Captains, community,

Is there anyone willing to pick up bagels at Chesapeake Bagel Bakery Sunday
morning at 8:00 and deliver them to the fields? This would be a huge help.
Beth is my back-up, but she's getting all the food and stuff together that
the UVA women's team is selling, so it'd be nice if someone else would
volunteer to pick them up for me. Please respond by e-mail before 4 today
and phone after 4. (434-989-0045)

Thanks,
Dawn
