I'm not sure how "unthinkable" that is. I believe Will suggested it when he
saw Hoffpauir bat LAST spring training... as much as I hate to admit it!!!

I'm not too concerned yet. Ramirez has missed a lot of time. Lee isn't
hitting. I think it will get much better. There is no reason to think it
will be worse than last year.

Agreed! I am tired of hearing people talk about Soriano's numbers in the 1
hole vs. other spots in the lineup. His numbers in the #5 spot are very
similar, especially if you think the walk number he put up in the 2006
season in Washington was a blip. (bb's 29,23,38,33,33,*67*,31).

I'm on the fence here. I'd be content if the trade happened (depending on
what we gave up) mostly because it means Soriano won't be leading off and
I'll be content if it doesn't happen.

I fear we have the DLee back that takes the first 2 months of the season
off. I hope that's not the case. I think Lee could be hitting .230 in June
and he'd still be playing everyday. I like Hoffpauir's bat, but I hate
giving up the defense. Lee makes Ramirez look like a gold glove third
baseman. I suspect if we got rid of Lee, twice a week we'd find ourselves
saying "Lee would have gotten that".

The Cubs offense has not looked anything like I was hoping it would
   look.

I think Soriano in the 2 hole is a terrible mistake - he should be in
   the 5 hole.

I don't think Roberts would make a difference. DeRosa isn't the
problem, or part of it. It will be a huge mistake to mortgage the
   future for no real gain.

The two best hitters this spring (Murton & Hoffpauir) won't have a
place to play when the regular season comes.

Fukudome hasn't lived up to the hype so far - but it's surely too
soon to give up. At least he's drawing walks as advertised. How
long before the bleacher bums start booing him if he doesn't start
   hitting?

How long 'til Lee starts hitting? How long will Lou let Lee struggle
   before putting Hoffpauir in?

   So many questions....

On the bright side... The Cardinals absolutely suck.
hahahahahahahaahaha!

Even better - Izturis (who I called the most overrated player in the
bigs when he came to the Cubs and I was roundly criticized, but I
digress) is hitting .139, has shown the defensive range of a small
shrubbery, and can't throw all the way to first base.

Again - hahahahahahahahahahaha!

You make a good point...trading Maddux for Izturis was an
unforgiveable offense. Even so - Himes refused to sign Maddux after
his first Cy Young award...and every single one of those wins in a
Braves uniform should've rightfully been in a Cubs uni.
I am no fan of Hendry, but let's just say if Hendry walked across the
street in front of my car, I'd hit the pedal on the left...for Himes
I'd put the pedal on the right on the floor.

But they are both willing to take a walk (take a look at Fuld's OBP
in Spring training) - which is why it is totally unfair to mention
either of them in the same breath as Neifi.

Fuld has yet to show that he can hit big league pitching and the second
time through the league opposing pitchers seemed to have Fontenot
figured out.

The Cubs are the most badly mismanaged franchise in the history of
professional sports, and Larry Himes was the worst offender in the
history of the franchise.

locked up, and it would be really "Dusty-like" to have Cintron,
Fontenot, Fuld or someone of that Neifi ilk on the 25 man roster

I assume everyone has had a chance to see this guy play? He showed
he had nothing left to prove at AAA before he hurt his knee last
year, and he's picked up in Spring Training right where he left off.
He's earned a job on a major league roster (that we won't get), and
the Cubs will lose him to minor league free agency at the end of the
year if he remains at AAA.

Bad luck for him that he's got D. Lee blocking him at 1st base. The
Cubs could surely use Hoffpauir's powerful left handed bat in the
lineup, but Lee's not going to sit on the bench. If the Cubs weren't
looking to make a run at the series this year, it would be a no-
brainer to trade Lee and give Hoffpauir the job...but they are. If
things don't go according to plan, and they've fallen out of
contention by mid-season, then Lee will be traded for prospects to
make room for Hoffpauir, but let's hope that doesn't happen.

I have a bad feeling that the Cubs will wind up trading Hoffpauir
instead of Lee...and I bet two years from now the Cubs will wish they
had traded Lee while his stock price was high and held Hoffpauir. It
will be worth it if Lee brings us a world series ring this year, but
that's a pretty big if.

Does anyone know if the Cubs can avoid minor league free agency
eligibility for Hoffpauir just by promoting him to the major league
roster in September when rosters expand?

No. This is not another post about Felix Pie. This is about Mr
Fukudome and his adjustment to American pitching, or lack thereof.
According to the Sun Times the fastball in Japan doesn't move. I guess
that it just lays there waiting to be hit. But if it doesn't move why
do they call it "fast"? Why don't they call it "a defenseless spheroid
about to be clobbered with a wooden bat"? Or aluminum if that is more
accurate in Japan. I too would be struggling if I was accustomed to
hitting a baseball off of a T and suddenly there is a guy out there
throwing a moving fastball in my direction. Did I say "struggling"? I
would be terrified.

Well I'm here to tell ya, to don't "play through" a testicular torsion. I
suspect some of this stuff wouldn't be an issue during the season, but it's
the first week of spring training so I don't see the big deal.

I will give DeRosa a pass. Losing consciousness and having to have an
operation in order to insert a catheter from your groin up to your
heart is fairly substantial. Even at that he is worried about Roberts
showing up to displace him. So he is agitating to be in the lineup.
On the other hand, Ramirez' sore shoulder just seems like more of the
same to me. He knows that he will be the starting third baseman as long
as he wants to suit up.

The Reds sign Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston Jr. to minor league
contracts.

This takes me back to a conversation we had perhaps 9 months ago where Will
boldly predicted that CP would be out of baseball in 2-3 years. Considering
the lack of interest in him after not being able to contribute to perhaps
the third worst team in the AL last year, I'm thinking Will might prove to
be right!!!

First of all...a diet can help you lose weight...there is no diet
that adds muscle.
Second...how can Soto have gone home to Puerto Rico to lose weight
and work out and then participated in the diet program that's only
available in Phoenix and LA?
Third...I think you're missing the point of the post...I am not
really saying that I think Soto is guilty...I am pointing out what a
shame it is that you have to ask the question because so many players
have cast a shadow on the rest.
