Nothing is as deflating as to have the worst month of a mediocre season
occur in August, and on top of that to have the last day of August be a
one hit shut out by a pitcher with a losing record

I keep reading how the Cubs are going to look to see if Cedeno and
Murton are part of their future for next year. Even Baker has said
this. Yet, niether start today. There is no reason why Murton and
Cedeno shouldn't be starting EVERY single day from here on out!

Hendry is going to have to keep dealing (Walker?, Burnitz?) to make
room for these two to play. Otherwise Baker won't do it. Even with
the team out of it.

Clearly nothing has gotten into Dusty. Paterson was back in the lineup
and Cedeno and Murton weren't. Fortunately the first batter, Hairston,
got a hit, otherwise it would have been a no hitter.

Too little, too late, but still an enjoyable ball game.

I really, really like that Cedeno kid.

A suicide squeeze?

What's got into Dusty?

In spite of Dusty, two rookies (Cedeno and Murton) played for the Cubs
on Tuesday, and they performed. Both successfully laid down sacrifice
bunts, and both stole a base. That is what they call baseball,
Dusty. It is a shame that none of the veterans are expected to do any
of the above.

Considering how each team's seasons have gone, I'd say every HR by
each of them has been pretty meaningless...

Acutally, I hope Abner Dalrymple, George Gore and King Kelly come back
to form. And you gotta like Silver Flint's veteran leadership at catcher.

Hi folks,

The season's almost over, so I thought I'd compare these two. Of course,
Burnitz has been disappointing to us:

SOSA:
380 ABs, 39 Runs, 15 Doubles, 14 HR, 45 RBI, .221 AVG, .295 OBP, .376 SLG,
.671 OPS

BURNITZ:
488 ABs, 68 Runs, 28 Doubles, 19 HRs, 67 RBI, .264 AVG, .327 OBP, .447 SLG,
.774 OPS

That's shocking to me. Sosa REALLY sucks. Burnitz has been pretty great on
defense and overall I'd love to have him on my bench, but I don't like him
starting every day. I seriously wonder how Sosa will get a good job next year. .
.

Matsui is a free agent and would fit beautifully into RF for us.

I don't think another stud starter-- and Burnett can certainly fill
that bill, will hurt us whether of not Wood ever becomes a solid starter.

I'm not married to Burnett, but we do need another starter with some
major league experience.

I have no faith in Wood and hope he can be developed into a closer for
a season and left to free agency.

I hope Guzman, or some other minor league prospect can fill one of the
starter slots, too.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hudson as 2B, either. I think that if we settle
Hairston there, he might be solid and do ok as a 2 or 7 hitter.

Just musing.

Interesting lineup. I like having Pie, Cedeno, and Murton
starting. I still think the Cubs will deal for Orlando Hudson for
2b. I haven't heard any rumors of such, I just think it makes
perfect sense for both clubs.

As for Matsui, is he a free agent? Or did you just figure on Hendry
making a deal for someone like that?

Lastly, and I'm not picking on you specifically (because I've read
similar things from Phil Rogers, Mike Kiley, etc.), but everywhere I
turn I read about the Cubs should make a run at A.J. Burnett because
they can't count on Wood. To me this makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.
The Cubs can't count on Wood because of his injuries, so people want
to replace him with Burnett?!!! I guess people conveniently forget
that A.J. Burnett is the Florida Marlins' answer to Kerry Wood - the
guy has just as many, if not more injury problems than Wood.

When you consider that Wood missed all of 1999, Wood has only about
1/2 season more time in the majors than Burnett. Yet Wood has
pitched 300 more innings. Until this year, Wood had made at least
22 starts in every one of his 6 seasons. Burnett can't even reach
20 starts half the time (3 times out of 6). Burnett has had full
seasons of 13, 4, and 19 starts.

I understand that 20 starts is hardly a benchmark of success, and I
completely understand that Hendry and Baker have to determine this
offseason if Wood can handle the rotation and plan accordingly.
However, I just can't see why everyone who complains about Wood's
injuries is so gung-ho about Burnett replacing him - because really
Burnett is Kerry Wood-south.

Maybe he has become more jaded than all of us, and instead of sitting
on these boards bitching, he has washed his hands of the team and quit
anything Cub.

And before we all laugh at the absurdity of the above statement, lets
not forget the transformation that our friend Jesse made. Anything's
possible!

Of course, we will still have that mighty pinch-hitter, Jose Macias.

I think he and Dusty are lovers.

Neifi will still be Neifi, the Rodney Dangerfield of baseball.
