For those who didn't see it, Marquise was charged with a HBP on Ryan
Doumit in the 2nd inning of Friday's game. Doumit eventually scored
the first run.
Replays showed that the pitch didn't hit him. Missed him by 6 inches
or so, but Doumit sold the HBP and the umpire went with it.
My question(s):
Is Doumit a low-life cheating bastard for trying it or just playing
smart baseball and taking what the umpire is willing to give him?
Is it purely the umpire's fault?
I've hated Lenny Dykstra with a passion for 20 years because of a
play a long time ago where Dykstra was caught in a run down between
home and third and intentionally reached up and batted down the throw
from the third baseman to score and allow the runner behind him to
score. Similar play in that the rules clearly say he should be
called out for interference, and the umpire missed it (ump said he
didn't see him reach up to swat the ball away). I hated Dykstra for
cheating (and we later learned he was cheating with steroids, too).
Do most people think it's fair game to get away with whatever the
umpires don't see?
I don't.
