Gee, Richard. By refusing to attend, your insights in how we can be more sensitive in such matters will go unheard. As we are trying to resurrect a dormant organization, your experience and input could be extremely helpful.
However, please remember that we are not an "anti-car" organization. Rather, we seek to represent cyclists and pedestrians (and includes folks who do their primary transport in all the various forms available, without the aid of an automobile) to ensure that all voices are heard and that we can push for safer and better opportunities for non-auto users (occasional or otherwise) in their attempts to share the road and get around. But we cannot avoid the reality that cars are still the favored (and in many cases more convenient) form of transport and that we are each entitled to a viewpoint on that. (That said, to all reading this, this note is NOT an invitation for dialogue via e-mail. Instead, please come to the meeting if you want to discuss how we can best represent cyclists and pedestrians -- and bus and train commuters.)
Our hope is we can learn from those like you, who have found ways to get around without cars while also finding ways to share the roads with the multitudes who will never give up the convenience of their own four wheels.
And thanks for providing the train and cycling info for those who might choose to come to the meeting by one of those modes of transport. Hopefully the rain will not be torrential as it was earlier today (with thunder and lightning accompaniment), so that those who wish to cycle may do so. I hope you'll re-consider your stance on attending.
Peace,
Karen (a "sucker" who will be carpooling from NY with some CT car-users)
