I am a rising Senior at Trinity College in Hartford, CT and am
extremely passionate about baseball. I recently purchased a SABR
membership and hope to be an active member.
I am very interested in issues pertaining to Asia, specifically
China, and am also a huge baseball enthusiast. I have recently began
researching baseball in China and am very interested in the cultural
and socio-political conditions surrounding the development of
baseball in the country.
I will be a Senior at Trinity College in Hartford, CT this fall and
hope to follow my passions of baseball and Asian affairs upon my
college graduation in May of 2008. It would be a dream to work for an
baseball organization, team, or federation, possibly with an
international scope. Do any of you have any suggestions or
recommendations? Can I provide you with a resume to help you further
understand my background?
Recently, I was presented with the unique opportunity to apply for a
Fulbright Scholarship. If you are not familiar with the Fulbright
Program, it allows students to travel and research a topic of their
choosing. I am very interested in Chinese affairs; I have significant
experience with the region through previous internships and classes
and have studied Mandarin Chinese for six years. Also, I am extremely
passionate about baseball and played at Trinity during my Freshman
and Sophomore years. Therefore, I would be very interested in
researching the emergence and development of baseball in China as my
project.
I would enjoy the opportunity to discuss this topic with this group
further, either through continued e-mails or via the phone. Do you
have any contacts or resources (books, articles, websites, etc.)
which could help me assemble a substantial project proposal?
Any help, feedback, or suggestions you have would be greatly
appreciated.
I hope to remain in touch. Please e-mail me at my main account,
Ryan.Hutzler@....
Sincerely,
Ryan Hutzler

Baseball Event
On Saturday, April 14, 1-5 PM, the DiscoveryMuseum
in Bridgeport, CT, is hosting a "Season Opener"
event with a baseball theme. Members of the Bridgeport Bluefish staff
will be on hand ... there will be a chance to practice pitching & hitting
skills at several hands-on stations ... there will be a number of special
baseball demonstrations and displays on the science of baseball, and also an
opportunity to learn more on the History of baseball in Bridgeport.
I know about this because I've been invited
to talk about my book "Burying the Black Sox: How Baseball's Cover-Up of
the 1919 World Series Fix Almost Succeeded," at 4 PM. I'm not sure
if other SABR members will be on the program; I'm hoping that the first
paperback editions of my book will be available at this event. There is
an admission fee with discounts for seniors, students, groups &
children (but not SABR members); call (203) 372-3521 for more
information.
The Bluefish don't open their season till
May ... they are one of the most successful Independent League teams, I think,
and have had the right idea about marketing to fans since they started
up.
Hi Jim! It might interest you to know that we have a CT SABR chapter, named for Smoky Joe Wood. We might periodically, and we would be interested in hearing about this work. Our next chapter meeting is down at Quinnipiac University in Hamden on Sat. Feb. 24. Would you like to do a presentation about what you've done on Connor? We are thinking about creating a CT Baseball Hall of Fame, and Connor would be a prime candidate for membership, along with O'Rourke. What you are doing would also be of interest for our developing web-site.
Hope to hear from you soon! Regards, Steve Krevisky, chapter President.

Two very good bios on Connor come to mind, if you want to track them down.
The first is in a SABR-published book titled "Baseball's First Stars" edited by Frederick Ivor-Campbell, Robert L. Tiemann and Mark Rucker.
The second is in a book titled "Ghosts in the Gallery at Cooperstown: 16 Forgotten Members of the Hall of Fame" by David L. Fleitz (McFarland & Co.)
Good luck.

Hi,
Has anyone written an article or done research
on Roger Connor and/or his brother Joe? Joe
Connor was a catcher and also played major league
ball too.
Several years back a local librarian in Waterbury
found Roger Connor's unmarked grave in Waterbury
and led a movement to put a gravestone on it.
I'd really like to learn more about my fellow
Waterbury Natives - The Connors.
Thank You.

Mr. Williams,
Thank You for the great website on finding
Connecticut born ballplayers.
I came across several Naugatuck/Union City
ballplayers that the local historical
society didn't know about...
One of them - Mr. "Tobasco" Tuckey is now
being looked into by the crack staff at the
naugatuck historical society.
Some day I'd like to come to a meeting
of the Smokey Joe Wood chapter. My mother's
uncle was forunate to know Mr. Woods and got
me his autograph back in the early 1970's.

Hi John.
Welcome to the group. We hope you will plan on coming to our future CT Smoky Joe Wood SABR Chapter meetings. Last month we had Babe Ruth's granddaughter.
There are two sites that come to mind to find player's hometowns.
My name is John Wiehn and I just signed up on the ct-sabr yahoo group.
At present time my profession is a Librarian at a local public library. I enjoy researching the history of my hometown of Waterbury, Connecticut.
One of personal
pursuits at present is finding information and photos of the Irish of Waterbury. I hope some day to write a book on the Irish in Waterbury.
I recently came across the name of Red Donahue. Red was born in Waterbury of Irish Parents and played major league baseball from 1891 to 1896. He also was a umpire for several games. Can anyone suggest where I can find a photo of Mr. Donahue??
Also is there a reference source that I can look to that will list all Waterbury natives who played in the major leagues? I would imagine there must be something online.

HI all! The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is this upcoming weekend up at Cooperstown. Joe Williams is going-anybody else? It would be good to get a report on this. I might go there in August. The SABR Leatherstockings chapter up there is meeting this weekend as well. I hope that some of you made it to the Adonis Terry event, so any reportbacks on this would be of interest as well. Dick Thompson, a SABR member and author from Mass, has asked for our help in the following matter: He is seeking info about a 22 inning, 5-4 game that was played in Hartford, probably in the 1933-1937 period. Schoolboy Johnny Taylor (Hartford native!) won this
game from Cannonball Bill Jackman. Both pitchers were African-Americans. Jackman may have been playing for the Philadelphia Colored Giants, or the Boston Colored Giants, or the Will Jackman all-stars. Taylor was perhaps playing for a local Hartford team. Dick thinks that this game occurred early in the season, in April or May. If anyone can help with this, then please contact Dick at: Wheezeball@... Finally, we need to make some plans for future meetings. Anyone want to go to a game in August? Shall we go back to Quinnipiac on a Sat. in Oct? Please send me your thoughts on this ASAP.
Okay, I delted the recent spam messages and got rid of the two members
who posted them. What follows is a message from Steve K:
Hi all! Hold the date of May 6 (Willie Mays' birthday!) for the next
gathering of the CT SABR SMOKY JOE WOOD CHAPTER! We will meet at 6 PM
at the Rock Cats' Stadium in New Britain, hopefully in the same suite
as last year. Please let me know if you can attend! Also, let me
know if you wish to make a presentation!
One of the items that we need to get moving on is our plans to
organize, in conjunctions with the New Haven Cutters, the Smoky Joe
Wood night at Yale Field on Sat. June 17. It will honor the Wood
family, as well as celebrate baseball in New Haven. We will be
working on a Wood biography, and we need to meet with Geoff Zonder,
down at the Yale archives, in order to pick out some good old
photos/stories, to be used for the PR for this event, as well as for
possible stuff to be passed out at the park.
We also envision a SABR table, along with authors selling books,
and a program that could have a Smoky Joe Wood baseball card to be
passed out to the attendees. We hope that the New Haven Register and
other papers, as well as TV/Radio stations will give the event
publicity and cover it.
UP to 5 people can go visit Geoff Zonder, as mentioned above. IF
you are interested in this, please let me know ASAP. Geoff mentioned
that good hours for seeing him are: 9-10:30 AM, or 2-4:30 PM, Monday
through Friday (though not this Friday, April 14).
WE also hope to meet soon with the Cutters, so as to continue the
planning for June 17.
Hope to see you in New Britain on Sat. May 6!
Regards, Steve K.

Hi all! Happy Holidays! We are making progress in a few areas. I talked recently to Bob Wood (who is recovering from a case of the shingles), and he agreed that the weekend of June 16-18 was a good time to have the "SMOKY JOE WOOD NIGHT" at Yale Field, which we have been discussing with the New Haven Cutters. We hope to step up our planning for this big event, as we move into 2006. Also, I have invited Bob Wirz, from the Cutters' front office, to speak at our next chapter meeting, which is on Sat. Feb. 18 at Quinnipiac University. Bob has previous experience with the Kansas City Royals, as well as with the
Commissioner's office, so I think that he will be of great interest to us. I also invite others interested in doing a presentation to contact me ASAP. It might be interesting to hear Rich Marazzi talk about rules interpretations (if he is available), given some of the unusual plays that occurred in the 2005 playoffs. I would like to do the trivia contest earlier as well. Please save your directions to Quinnipiac from the Oct. 29 meeting, and we hope to hear from Larry Levine re where we will be on Feb. 18. Also, as a reminder, the NYC regional will be on Sat. Jan. 28-details to follow. NY chapter member Ross Adell is not well, and we'll keep you informed about this. Len Levin and Dave Gumbley are coordinating efforts to have our respective NE SABR chapters attend a Red Sox game at Fenway. The most likely date is June 10, so let me know if you are interested! Again, Happy Holidays, and hope to see you at Quinnipiac on Sat. Feb. 18 (probably same 11:30-4:30 format as on Oct. 29,
and hope the weather cooperates-it'll be SPRING TRAINING by then!)! Best wishes, Steve K.
Hi all! I thought that you would want to know this. I hope that this will facilitate our planning for these events, and I hope you will all attend and participate! Regards, Steve K.

Hi all! I just talked to Bob Wood, and he confirmed that the weekend of June 16-18, 2006, would be good, re having the "Smoky Joe Wood night" at Yale Field, home of the New Haven Cutters. I thought you'd want to know this, so that we can build on the ideas that we generated at the Dec. 2 planning meeting, which was held at Yale Field. I hope that we can make this a really great event for all! Also, regarding a Feb. meeting, I suggest that we try for Sat. Feb. 18, 2006,
at Quinnipiac, so please save your directions from the Oct. 29 meeting. Please be thinking about speakers, and other ideas for the program, all subject to Larry Levine and the availability of QU that weekend. Happy Holidays! Regards, Steve K.
Hi all! We are making progress in building our chapter. We had 35 people at Quinnipiac on Oct. 29, featuring Bob Wood. We hope to have another meeting in Feb. at Quinnipiac, and we are planning a Smoky Joe Wood night at Yale Field in 2006, in conjunction with the New Haven Cutters. Please join us! Regards, Steve K.
Hi all! It's time to be thinking about our next meeting, which is at
the New Britain Rock Cats park on Sat. April 16. The Cats are
playing, so we get to see a game as well! Pete Zanardi has gotten a
room for us, in coordination with their GM, Bill Dowling. We need to
know what time we have the room. Please remind me if you wish to
present something. We still need to decide on a chapter name. We
will be on our own for lunch, as I understand it. We can perhaps get
there a couple of hours early, do our stuff, and then enjoy the
game. I understand that one of our members, Ken Kousen, wants to
sing the anthem.
I figured I'd remind you now, so that we can put the finishing
touches on what we want to do. I hope you'll all attend-bring
friends, family, etc. IF you no longer wish to receive these e-
mails, then please contact Eileen Canepari at the SABR office, so
that you can be removed. Her edress is: ECanepari@...
I will be away from 17 to 28 March over spring break, but I
will check e-mail as often as possible. Hope all is well. Regards,

Hello, all. Steve Krevisky asked me to repost this here:
Hi all! From the feedback that I've gotten, Sat. April 16 seems good
for most of you to meet. It turns out that the New Britain Rock Cats
are home that afternoon, so why not meet at the park? Ken L. has
informed me that club officials could meet with us, so let's see if
we can do this, if that meets with your approval.
Please let me know what research projects you're working on, and
if you'd like to present in April. Getting Jim Bouton is a
possibility, from what I've heard. People ae working on stuff on the
old Conn. state league, so please pass on your thoughts on this to
me, and I'll get that to Jon Daly. It was suggested to me that we
have a chapter historian, so as to keep track of what we do, what PR
we get, etc. Anyone interested?
Regarding the possible chapter name, many of you like the Smokey
Joe Wood name. Some do not, since he wasn't born in CT., and he
coached at Yale, which is more southern CT. I would emphasize that
the chapter is for the whole state of CT. Having a name that would
give us visibility would be good for us, and the name should be
someone who had prominence in CT. Let's keep this discussion going,
and try to reach consensus.
I will be happy to be the point person, and the feedback was
good on this. I e-mailed Ryan Chamberlain in the SABR office
yesterday, asking for the April 16 meeting date to be in the SABR
bulletin for the next issue. I hope this works, as other details
need to be worked out.
Also, the NY regional meeting will be on Sat. March 12, at the
Mid-Manhattan Library in NYC. It would be nice to have some of us
there!
As always, please contact me with your concerns and thoughts.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!
BEST WISHES, STEVE KREVISKY
