TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)
New Moon - Febraury 20th
Low Tide: -.31 ft at 8:47 am
High Tide: 9.08 ft at 3:06 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - The new moon keeps the tidal swing big, but the surf is the
standard chest to headhigh with a few overhead sets. It keeps this
course until the big NW takes effect next Friday morning, pushing the
sets up to 1-3 foot overhead, the same size shaping up further south
by next Saturday. This swell should peak Saturday afternoon and start
to drop again next Sunday without the previously expected relief from
the South.
Caribbean - The small surf continue through the weekend into next
week - knee to waist high. Watch for storms bringing high winds and
rain. The next swell hits from both the NE and SE next Friday,
pushing surf up to head high at the beachbreaks and even bigger
Saturday on the reefs.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
A northwest swell arrived this week and the off-shores picked up to a
gale. Tamarindo has had shoulder to head high waves since Wednesday,
but the wind has been a problem until late afternoon. Today seems
like it could be great as the swell continues and the wind is more
calm.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): This is the weekend for sunset
sesstions! The later high tides are going to conincide with managable
winds.
buenos vientos.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Most of Tamarindo and Langosta
has waves right now. Langosta is better a little earlier and
Tamarindo closer to sunset. Casi todo Tamarindo y Langosta tiene olas
ahorita.
** From Carlos at Roca Bruja Surf Tours in Playa de Coco-

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande:
Pretty much as you predicted. This amazing Northern swell is just
twisted enough to light up all the breaks in our area - lots of
broken boards, bruises, and raving about open barrels. Off shores and
a little over head with top to bottom, round peelers. Every half hour
there is a rogue in the well overhead range.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same with a little lighter
wind. Get it early in case the wind switches in the afternoon.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Take your pick. South facing
beaches will be a little smaller.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
We had a little one-day swell in the middle of the week, but
generally waves have had 1-3 foot faces. Mostly off-shore winds and
lots of sun. The estuary seems to be shifing these days so the next
swell should be interesting.
Vientos
casi siempre off shore y mucho sol.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): It's supposed to pick up a little for
tomorrow's morning session, so let's hope that's true. It would be a
perfect eekend for morning surf.
mananas.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Get a longboard and go out
early in the morning near the rivermouth while the tide is coming in.
** From Carlos at Roca Bruja Surf Tours in Playa de Coco-
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande:
The swell picked up on Thurs. and produced consistent, head high,
wind swept barrels for both the morning and evening sessions. The
afternoon session was spectacular for small waves. I heard average
skilled surfers raving about getting barreled and even tubed.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): These are tipical conditions for Playa
Grande for this time of the year - small waves spiking and lulling
depending on how the bay magnifies the swell pulse, and how the off
shores direct the waves toward the beach.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: One of the major advantages of
Playa Grande this time of the year is the ring of mountains behind it
that slow down the hard off-shores. If the wind blows extra hard,
Playa Grande is a good place to surf. Spread out and be considerate
as we are being swarmed by the hapless Tamarindo surfers who don't
feel satisfied practicing their "pop ups" on the beach of Tamarindo's
over promoted surf break.
** From Hightide Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
fuerte viento off shore
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Suerte al team

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

stormy, best to get up early and catch the clean morning surf, the
weather has been coming in around 8:30 ish and the onshore has been

Pacific - This Sunday afternoon will see a few chest to head high
sets in the afternoon up in the northern Nicoya peninsula and Monday
will show a nice NW swell pop in some overhead sets for the morning
and early afternoon. It dies fast that evening leaving Tuesday back
down to chest high at best and smaller Wednesday going to the
weekend. A slight SW ground swell will fill in the southern beaches
come Thursday. Good offshores all week, though. Maybe try kitesurfing
on Lake Arenal or hit the Caribbean
Caribbean - It is going off with 1-2 overhead sets all weekend and
into next week. Whichever spot you hit, beachbreak or reef it's going
to be fun and big until at least Wednesday. Make sure to respect the

Lake Tamarindo is a great place to swim and snorkel right now, or to

Protest Sparks Debate over Beach Camping by Steven J. Barry -
sbarry@.... What began as a trip to protest restricted
access to public beaches at the Papagayo Peninsula in northwestern
Guanacaste this week grew into a dicey debate about the legality of

Sustainable Solutions Caravan traveled from San Francisco, Calif., to
San José, Costa Rica, on two old buses fueled by vegetable oil. The
group arrived here last Friday after a two-month excursion through
Mexico and Central America to tout the benefits of biodiesel. Tico

TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)
New Moon - January 21st
High Tide: 6.74 ft at 9:15 am
Low Tide- 2.5 ft at 3:06 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Dropping W swell over the weekend, chest high with head
high sets Saturday, chest high at best Sunday at the beachbreaks.
Monday through Wednesday look worse, waist to chest high with a
bigger set every half hour. Very clean conditions. Long period NW
ground swell should give next weekend some head high sets, but it's a
long shot. (Take your chances on the Caribbean coast)
Caribbean - Fading ESE swell brings waist high surf to the
beachbreaks, chest high at the best spots for Saturday. By Sunday
even that disappears, leaving a knee high void until Tuesday midday
when another strong ESE shows up with some chest high sets by sunset.
Wednesday and Thursday it builds up to overhead, and will stay
overhead high going into the weekend.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
It's been an interesting week in Tamarindo. A nice little swell
rolled in over night, making beautiful shoulder high waves at the
river mouth this morning. The wind's been acting weird, sometimes on
shore, sometimes off. Not your characteristic January weather, but at
least the water stays reasonably warm that way.
viento esta lo mas raro--aveces on shore y aveces off.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): It's looking great for morning surf.
You can go from sun-up to lunch time if the wind doesn't turn on
shore and I don't know what to say about that. Very strange.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The river mouth is really
nice, the earlier the better avoids crowds. Langosta should be great
this weekend at sunrise while the incoming tide is still low.

Pacific - Strong tide shift with the new moon this weekend, combined
with some NW swell produces 1-2 foot overhead waves for most
consistent spots. Drops off to head high Sunday afternoon as the
swell passes offshore and doesn't strengthen until Wednesday morning,
building back to 1 foot overhead faces. Great 2-3 foot overhead set
waves stick around until Friday evening. Best dawn patrol - Wednesday
morning.
Caribbean - A short burst of NE swell pegs the coast Saturday with
overhead surf and then drops a foot by Sunday evening. Then another
swell from the ESE arrives on Tuesday at dawn pushing surf head high
and increases throughout the day. Look for 2+ overhead sets on Wed.
before it drops back to head high by Thursday and smaller going into

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
We've got waves! After a 2-week flat spell, some nice long rides have
been rolling in at the river mouth from waist to shoulder high.
Langosta has been overhead, but super-slow take-offs. Great off-
shores and cool water.
Buenos vientos
off-shore y agua algo frio.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Hopefully the swell will stay around
for a few days. The winds are consistant and much more bearable in
the mornings. Looks like a great weekend to be right here! Esperamos
mismo.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Try Langosta at a low or mid
tide! If you can get to Avellanas, go there! Prueba Langosta a una
marea baja o media. Si puedes ir a Avellanas, vaya!
** From Carlos at Roca Bruja Surf Tours in Playa de Coco-

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
If only there were waves in Tamarindo to report! The new year has
brought lots of beautiful sunshine and off-shore winds, but we need a
swell! Tamarindo is breaking knee to waist high; Langosta maybe a
foot bigger. The water is cool, but not too cold.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Nothing big in the forecast,
unfortunately. Teach a friend to surf! No hay pronosticos de olas,
desafortunadamente. Ensenale a un amigo a surfear!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
right now. Options nearby are Playa Grande, Playa Langosta, and Playa
Avellanas. It might be a good time for a drive to Nosara. Ahorita no
hay nada en el Lago de Tamarindo. Playa cercanas son Playa Grande,
Playa Langosta y Playa Avellanas. Puede ser un buen momento para un

just too small.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

but nothing much.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

seems to be hitting the middle of Tamarindo bay, and missing the
northern areas of Playa Grande. Try Tamarindo, and the southern half
of Playa Grande.

TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)
Full Moon - January 7th
High Tide- 6.82ft at 11:07 am
Low Tide: 2.2 ft at 5:00 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Go to the Caribbean! The Guanacaste coast will get some
headhigh surf Saturday, while the rest of the coast makes due with
chest to head high surf. This trend worsens through the week, surf
will be at best head high going all week and into next weekend. The
southern beachbreaks chest high on average.
Caribbean - This coast is the place to be! Surf is 1-3 foot overhead
with the best waves coming Sunday throughout the day. The bulk of the
E swell passes by Monday afternoon and by Tuesday surf drops to head
high with still some leftover overhead sets. Wednesday it's down
another foot and by Thursday it's too late, waves only waist high.
This is the season, so more surf will be on the way for sure.

New Moon - December 23rd
Low Tide: (-.8)ft at 10:50 am
High Tide- 9.57ft at 5:11 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Occasional overhead sets appear over the weekend, but the
main SW swell has passed and by next Monday and Tuesday, expect only
waist to chest high conditions. Wednesday looks better with a few
head high sets showing in the south and then the New Year brings fun
head high to overhead surf to the coast. It last only about 24 hours
so for the weekend, it's back to chest high. Go to the Caribbean!!
Caribbean - The weekend wave size will be only wiast to chest high,
but by Tuesday evening a ENE swell pushes in some head high surf and
by Wednesday afternoon should be 1-2 feet overhead. The best day will
be Friday, as 1-3 ft. overhead conditions can be found at la isla and
other reefs.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
Waves in Tamarindo right now are waist to chest high at most,
Langosta is shoulder to head. Winds have been off-shore all week and
the new moon has brought very drastic tide levels, creating strong
currents.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend the beach is packed. There
are waves around, but Tamarindo is crammed with Christmas vacationers
and surf schools with over a dozen people at a time.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Head away from the crowds to a
solitary peak in toward Grande or head to Langosta.

Those hard off-shores are back, starting up around 9 AM and blowing
until mid afternoon. Waves are smaller than at the beginning of the
week, waist high and breaking fast. Los fuertes vientos off-shore han
regresado.
cintura y romen fuertes.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a
pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend morning sessions should be
good although probably not all that big. Mid tide is a better pick
right now than high tide.

Full Moon - December 8th
Low Tide - 1.43 ft at 6:35 am

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - The Guanacaste coast is the place to surf this week, as
offshore winds last longer each day and the swell is coming from the
NW. Best around Ollie's and Witches, while the rest of the coast
settles for waist to head high surf most of the week, with bigger
days on Wednesday and Friday. The next weekend looks like head high
conditions and clean, with a double session at the beach breaks due
to an early high tide.
Caribbean - The beaches will be hit or miss for the rest of the
weekend and throughout the week. An ENE swell currently sending in
waist to chest highwaves peaks Monday with some head high sets and
backs off by Tuesday, leaving it only knee high with some bigger
sets. Another ENE fills in Wednesday, but doesn't make it all the way
in, so only a few chest high sets will be seen until the next
weekend. Some spots that jut further out may pick up the swell
better. Try an island or reef.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
The week started out with a strong north swell that brought head high
waves to Tamarindo. The rights were rolling but the current had us
all on a train to Langosta. Since that swell passed, we seem to have
waves every other day--not sure what that's all about. Winds have
been off shore sometimes all day, sometimes just ing the morning.
This is the first week of no rain.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): With this every-other-day pattern,
Saturday should be the pick! I expect off-shores in the morning but
won't count on them in the afternoon as the tide fills in. Sunset
sessions should be the best.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

good right now if you know the spot to be. Henry's is even breaking,

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Big tide change for Friday, and this weekend starts off
small. Chest high at best until Saturday right before dark, when some
head high sets start filing in. By Sunday, surf picks up to a foot
overhead from the SW and by Monday stays bigger, with a push from the
NW as well. Monday and Tuesday will have some great dawn patrol and
evening sessions, so get on it. Nothing big expected for later next
week or next weekend.
Caribbean - Waves from the ENE push in Saturday morning, chest to head
high at the beachbreaks and best in the afternoon. Sunday it drops
back down to waist high, but stays consistent with a few bigger sets
every half hour. This lasts through Wednesday with more swell on the way.

After a flat week, a swell came in yesterday. Evening surf in
Tamarindo was shoulder high and Langosta was head high. This morning
it seems to have tapered off a bit and the wind was light on-shore
this morning. It's been a week of mixed winter and summer
conditions--some days clear, some days muggy.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): This will be a great weekend for morning
surf. Whether or not the swell holds, the recent shift in swell
direction has waves peeling all over the place.
partes.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's going to be a great
weekend where ever you go. Langosta seems to be getting the best surf
right now. Sera buena donde vaya. Langosta parece tener las olas
mejores en este momento.
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The chest to head high swell we've had running since Tuesday seems to
be finally waning as of Friday morning. Still fun Friday morning with
offshore winds and chest high waves. We're moving into the double
session cycle at Grande with at least the guarantee of offshore winds
for the morning session. The afternoon sessions are a bit more tenuous
with the winds, but the occasional rainstorms can make for some nice
late afternoon offshores.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves)- Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Diminishing swell but still lots of fun,
especially with two go outs.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

The report from Malpais, Santa
Teresa and Playa Carmen area: It has been small for the last week, but
there was some increase in the size yesterday afternoon. About
shoulder high on the biggest sets. The wind was not bad at all
yesterday and the afternoon session was glassy, and sunny. The extreme
high tide was making it a little mushy around mid afternoon, but it
got better towards sunset. The crowds are back though.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

size will increase a little but not much.

Pacific - The swell tap has been turned off for the moment, surf
waist to chest high with only a few random head high freak sets, and
it stays that way over the weekend and until next Tuesday. Wednesday
the SW swell fills in another foot, and by Thursday some consistent
head high surf hits the better beachbreaks. Only drops a foot by next
weekend, but no big relief in sight.
Caribbean - The surf season is open for the right coast, consistent
waist to chest high surf from the NNE along the beaches for the
weekend, dropping back to just waist by Monday. The next push comes
from the ENE on Thursday morning, waves head high with one or two
overhead sets. It drops again next Friday, but stays fun going into
next weekend.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
Wave size and conditions: The surf is small, about waist high, but
today we're having our first burst of stiff dry off-shore wind! This
past week started out with a large westerly swell that brought waves
at least head high to Tamarindo and now it has passed.
What to expect this weekend: If today is an indicator, it will be a
weekend for longboarding. The small peeling waves and the perfect off-
shores should make mornings a dream.
Where to surf this weekend: I vote for the Tamarindo river mouth.
It's gets crowded, but the waves are plentiful even if they're small.
As the road dries out, the trip to Avellanas should also be well
worth the bumps.
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The swell is small--around chest high--but the offshores are creating
beautiful fun little peaks all up and down the beach. Long mid-
morning to early afternoon sessions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The waves will probably stay small but
the sun will be out and the offshores blowing, so it will be a fun
weekend for playing around in the surf.

High Tide - 8.09 ft at 1:58 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Saturday starts out chest to head high with a few bigger
sets coming from the SW. Sunday it picks up to a foot overhead and
the best time will be Sunday late afternoon. By Monday, the SSW swell
fades down to head high and by Tuesday afternoon, a longboard might
be needed as it drops to waist to chest. (a little bigger farther
south) Wednesday through next Friday look the same, with some
overhead relief arriving from the SW next Sunday.
Caribbean - Some residuals from a giant fetch in the Atlantic sneaks
under the Lesser Antilles and pushes in chest high surf at the beach
breaks with maybe a a head high sneaker every half hour. Swell quiets
down Sunday and by Monday it's back to waist high. Midweek stays
small, knee to occasional waist high. Conditions can change rapidly
as this is the prime month for hurricanes that begin below the
Yucatan peninsula.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
This has been a great week for morning surf. The incoming tide had a
little extra swell early in the week, about chest high. Morning off
shores lasted until mid morning. The sky turned bright summer blue
and the onshores were light. Then your surf reporter went to San Jose
where I am right now and am not certain what the current beach
conditions are.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Hard to say from inland, but if the
weather follows it's pattern, it will probably be gorgeous weather.
The mid-day tides may be somewhat blown out, but probably not too
much for nice longboard sessions.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Keep an eye on that
rivermouth. It seems to be shifting north and that's when it really
starts rolling.
** From Carrie from Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
Too low tide to surf Grande this morning, but there looks like
there's a decent size swell in the water, at least chest to head
high. Glassy morning conditions and maybe it will stay glassy, or go
offshore like it did Thursday for the afternoon session.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Sunny with some high clouds. Afternoon
sessions, and perhaps we're seeing the beginning of the dry season
weather with the promise of more consistent offshores.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Afternoon sessions at the main
peak at Grande, and perhaps a low tide morning session at the
Tamarindo Rivermouth.
** From Marco at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa -
** From Karla at Green Iguana for girls in Mal Pais -
Here in Malpais, Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa area the waves are
smaller this week, shoulder to head high on the bigger sets. Cleaner
than last week but smaller in size.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves)- Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The weather has changed now and is nice
and sunny and we expect to see more sun during the weekend. Bring a
strong sunblock if you are coming to this area, especially if you are
going to be surfing at high tide since it is in the middle of the day
when the sun is stronger.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Carmen in the high tide and
Santa Teresa in the low tide.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Not much going
on except the usual soccer games on Sundays. For Spanish lessons in
Malpais email karla_malpais@.... Have a great weekend!

** From Guido at Hotel Fuego del Sol in Playa Hermosa -
This weekend Hermosa will get a little smaller but still fun, the
waves are coming from south ranging between 3-6 on Fri - Sat - and
2-5 the next week. Head - Shoulder high and better in the afternoon
(4 - 5 pm) after high tide. It gets windier at noon, just before high
tide. Best breaks are Tulin, Sector2, La Curva at the southern end of
Playa Hermosa and Jacó in high tide. The weather has been very good,
sunny mornings and a few showers late in the afternoon and at night.

TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)
Full Moon - November 8th
High Tide -9.0 ft at 6:52 am
Low Tide - .29 ft. at 1:08 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - The excellent SW swell pumps in 2-3 overhead surf all
weekend and stays strong until Tuesday afternoon, as it will drop
down to overhead. Wednesday will still see some overhead sets, but
less consistent and by Thursday it will be down to chest to head
high. Next Friday looks smaller, only chest high sets at the best
beachbreaks. Going into next weekend, it does not look good, only
chest high and waiting for some South swell that shows in about 11
days.
Caribbean - Swell from the ENE drifts in slowly for the weekend, not
pushing surf over waist high. The conditions do not improve until
next Wednesday afternoon, when some bigger chest high bumps will be
seen and by next Friday, a head high set or two will keep the locals
happy.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
Wave heights and conditions: There's been a south swell running this
week which brought head high surf to Tamarindo. Capitan Suizo was
breaking nicely from waist to chest high over the weekend and the
south wind that chopped up the waves at other local breaks was off
shore there. The swell has dimisished, but waves still are shoulder
high near the rivermouth and morning winds are light off shore.
What to expect this weekend: Another swell is rumored to be on the
way, so it should be a great weekend in Tamarindo. You can get in two
sessions with the early/late tides. Afternoons are variable--some are
rainy and on shore, but the pattern is starting to shift and allow
some pretty sunset sessions.
Best place to surf: I don't think you can go wrong. If it gets big,
the Suizo should be good--or just run for the closest wave.
** From Carlos at Roca Bruja Surf Tours in Playa de Coco -

Pacific - Saturday will see the start of a new SW swell with surf 1-2
foot overhead. By Monday it increases another 2 feet and by next
Wednesday easily double overhead at southwest facing beachbreaks.
Wednesday also shows an influx of northwest swell, too, so look for
lots of set waves and hit the points Thursday at lower tides. (Swells
always seem to arrive right on or after a new moon. How convenient!)
Caribbean - Surf this weekend drops down to knee to waist high with
no real sets. The swell fades entirely by Monday and Tuesday it's
tiny. Wednesday and Thursday also look knee high or less, but Friday
should see an increase of a foot and continuing to get better for
next weekend.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana the surf instructor in Tamarindo -
It's been a week of a lot of variety! A lot of onshore wind, some off-
shore mornings, nice shoulder-high waves during afternoon sessons mid-
week but a little smaller now. The swell direction is westerly and
the last few mornings have been clear and bright. Very cool water! La
semana ha tenido mucha variedad! Mucho viento on-shore, algunas
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend we can expect nice morning
surf if the weather pattern holds. Probably not all that big, but
should be clean. Dress warmly.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA- > El mejor lugar a
really likes this swell direction! La boca de rio en Tamarindo esta
buena con esta direccion de swell.
** From Witch's Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The surfs been dropping throughout
the week, from really fun overhead surf on Monday to waist-to-chest
high slop mid-day Friday. It was really really good the first couple
days of the week...
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Fortunately the
swell looks to be building again, by Sunday surf should return to
shoulder-to-head high (hopefully bigger at exposed spots)
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA- The Tamarindo
Rivermouth has been shaping up the last few weeks, the surf this past
Monday and Tuesday has shown that true potential to the rivermouth is
there... Since the swell should have alot of west in it, Tamarindo
should show to be quite fun!!
** From Carlos at Roca Bruja Surf Tours in Playa de Coco -
Roca Bruja Surf Operation Playas
del coco. MUY PRONTO - WWW.COSTARICASURFTRIPS.COM
JACO & HERMOSA
** From Guido at Hotel Fuego del Sol in Playa Hermosa -
Conditions have been pretty much the same during the week, surf from
the southwest, waist to shoulder, not much wind and a few nice
barrels and not crowded at all, tropical depresion approaching the
coast and a change on the swell`s direction and zise is expected for
Sat overnight - Sunday morning. Biggest waves will be tomorrow head
high and maybe one foot overhead, gets smaller on Fry and Sat and
changes on Sunday to ssw. Tides in Hermosa are high in the early
morning, but not too big, ( 6.50 average) good for early raisers, 5
am till 8 am, or late afternoon before sunset, great way to end the
day. According to the swell's direction, is better to surf in Boca
Barranca, Caldera.. Left breaks are on for the weekend.

hi,
I was thinking about spending a week in Costa rica(tamarindo), and then a week
in Panama, and i´m having some serious doubts on when to go. Since i´m going for
surfing, i dont know if its better for to go on February,
or in July. My doubt is that, everybody says is offshore all the time in
February, but as i could notice, it s pretty much small all the time(is that
true), and from what i read in your website places like witchs rock, ollies
point and playa negra break best on S, SW and W swells which are much more
frequent july, and most of February swells como from N, NW(am i
wrong?)...Besides theres bigger waves in Panama at this time of the year, so i
wanted to ask what do you think is best for me to do?Oh, and is it esay for me
to move around on the tamarindo area, since i´m only 18, and not able to rent a
car?
Thanks for your patience,
Fabio
P.S.: Does witchs rock, ollie point, and playa negra break on northern swells?
because what would be the purpose of beeing on the offshore season since theres
no waves at this spots?and is it consistent on February?what about April, would
it be better than Feb. and Jul.?
P.S.: As you could notice, i´m pretty lost, so any info you could send would be
great...
thanks again...

Full Moon - October 10th
Low Tide -.32 ft at 8:52 am
High Tide - 8.64 ft. at 3:01 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - The peak of this weekend's WSW and NW swell combo will come
Saturday afternoon, with surf 1-2 foot overhead with an 11 second
period. Expect lots of set waves through Sunday. By Monday evening it
drops a foot but won't get below head high at the beachbreaks.
Another SW swell arrives Thursday morning bringing waves a foot
overhead and a 13 second period. Surf will be consistently overhead
all through next weekend with more set waves due to some NW swell
arriving. Dawn patrol tomorrow for barrels!
Caribbean - The right coast is still quiet, with surf knee high to
waist all weekend and through next week until Thursday, when a ESE
wind swell raises waves up to chest high. But due to tropical
activity in the Atlantic, long range swells may push in a few nice
sets at the right moment.

** From Diana the surf instructor in Tamarindo -
There's been a nice southwest swell going this week bringing in waves
around shoulder high in Tamarindo, head high in Langosta. Ocean and
wind conditions have been stormy, but some early morning this week
have been fairly well lined up and even off-shore.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
It's October, so who knows? We've got plenty of waves right now, it's
all about how stormy the ocean is. Expect quick drops and short
rides.
Espere entradas
rapidas y rides cortos.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

up this swell the best. The earlier in the morning, the better.

unos 3 a 5 pies.

Full Moon - October 10th
Low Tide -(-.23) ft at 8:42 am
High Tide - 9.33 ft. at 2:56 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - The SSW swell has arrived bringing surf overhead to 2-3'
overhead on the sets by Sunday morning. Up north the surf will be a
foot smaller. The wave period lengthens to 13 seconds Monday and
Tuesday, and those days will be the best for a sunset session.
Wednesday the swell fades un poco down to head high, and by Thursday
afternoon, the overhead sets only appear every 15 to 20 minutes. Next
weekend looks small, chest high, and nothing hitting until the
following Wednesday from the SSW.
Caribbean - The flat spell is almost over. On Tuesday afternoon,
waves will increase from knee high to waist high with a few chest
high sets and Wednesday morning looks best for finding chest high
surf. Thursday the swell fades all day and by Friday it's back to
knee to waist. Be aware that conditions change dramatically with the
presence of tropical storms so watch for updates.

New Moon - September 25th
High Tide - 7.19 ft at 8:23 am
Low Tide - 2.15 ft. at 2:41 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Waves 1-2 foot overhead are coming from the SW and will
remain the same size through Monday. The high tides are just right a
nice dawn patrol as well. Tuesday morning will see a decrease in size
by a foot and another two foot drop by Wednesday, down to chest to
head high by the afternoon. Stays small until next Sunday, when a big
south starts filling in the coast with waves overhead and growing
bigger all through the following week.
Caribbean - Still no surf predicted for the Caribbean coast, Sunday
will see a few knee high sets but it won't get much bigger throughout
the week.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the PuraMar surf teacher in Tamarindo -
Wave heights and conditions: The swell that came in during the
weekend gave us about two days of excitement. Waves now range from
waist to shoulder high, coming in from the south/southwest. The on-
shore switch is coming pretty early in the mornings now. Afternoon
rains have been consistent and rather heavy for the last week,
cooling off the steamy afternoons and sometimes turning the wind
around.
What to expect this weekend: This weekend, expect beautiful morning
and rainy afternoons. Getting up early will be the best stragegy for
getting good surf. Think twice about surfing too soon after heavy
rains, as this is a common cause of ear infections and other
unpleasantries.
Best place to surf this weekend: With the south/southwest pulse,
Avellanas should be good. There has been some road work, so it may
even be passable! The rivermouth in Tamarindo around mid-tide is
looking nice and of course as long as the waves come from the south,
Grande is a good choice.

Pacific - A dead south swell reaches 1-3 foot overhead by Friday
afternoon and remains powerful throughout the weekend. Expect a few
double overhead sets at the best beach breaks. By Monday afternoon it
drops back down to overhead and by Tuesday, the surf disappears into
chest high glass. Dawn patrols should be small but nice until next
Friday. Next Saturday begins another round of southwest swell.

high coming from the East. Expect it to drop daily, knee high by
Monday and then it's dead flat by Wednesday with nothing forecasted

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the PuraMar surf teacher in Tamarindo -
WAVE SIZE/CONDITIONS: The swell we had going last week has passed and
the one rumored to be on the way has yet to arrive. The mornings have
been gorgeous and even off-shore, but the tide is out, so not much
surf in Tamarindo then. By the time it fills in, it's pretty sloppy
due to the wind change, but by sunset it's starting to mellow out and
a longboard and find some nice rides at the rivermouth. Wave size is
our average waist to chest.
WHAT TO EXEPECT THIS WEEKEND:Another south swell is rumored to be on
the way, and that could change everything for the weekend. Very very
early morning surf could come up and late afternoons will be as good
as the wind allows. Afternoon storm systems often switch the wind
back off-shore in their wake, so there's a lot to be hopeful about.
WHERE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND: The Tamarindo river mouth is looking
interesting these days. I would keep an eye on that. If the south
swell comes in without too much south wind, Grande would be the
definate pick.

Full Moon - September 10th
High Tide -8.24 ft. at 9:34 am
Low Tide - 1.31 ft at 3:55 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - For the weekend expect surf from chest high to head high
and most south facing beaches, with an overhead set popping up every
20 minutes from a fading S swell. Sunday afternoon it drops a foot,
and by Monday it's back to chest high at best, but super clean
conditions. The next swell is from the south, pushing waves up to a
foot overhead in the southern and central zones Tuesday afternoon,
and filling the rest of the coast by Wednesday. Size will vary on the
tide and day, from chest high to overhead until next weekend. No
macking swells, but clean consistent chest to head high surf for the
following week.
Caribbean - It's quiet on the beaches, only knee high with a few
waist high sets. Monday evening will show a one foot increase and
size, so surf will have one or two stomach high sets on Tuesday
morning, but it drops fast and stays small (knee high or less) until
next weekend. Some hope is on the horizon by the following Monday.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the PuraMar surf teacher in Tamarindo -
Waves and Conditions: There's a nice swell rolling right now. The
waves in Tamarindo are from waist to shoulder high and hold beatiful
shape even as the tide pulls back. Winds vary. Some days are off-
shore until mid morning, even longer sometimes. Afternoon rains have
brought the wind on shore every day, but we've got the ideal early-
morning high tides this week so there's plenty of fun to be had!
What to expect this weekend: Looks like a great weekend for morning
surf in Tamarindo. The tide will be coming in the mid-late morning
when the wind is good, so we'll be able to surf from sunup until the
wind switches.
Where to surf this weekend: The Tamarindo rivermouth should be a good
place in the mornings and I expect that Avellanas will be worth the
bumpy ride as well.

DOMINICAL & OSA
**From Steph at green Iguana Surf Camp in Dominical -
Waves are about 4 foot. Blowing hard offshore this morning. Around
high tide, winds died and there were nice glassy peaks. This evening,
low tide, there were some fun barrels.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - I think that the
size will stay the same for the next week. It should be fun when the
tide is coming in, as well as at low tide.

Low Tide - .09 ft at 9:50 am
High Tide -9.45 ft. at 4:03 pm
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Surf for the weekend will be chest to head high with a few
overhead sets Saturday, but dropping a foot by Sunday (the exception
being north towards Witch's Rock, where the surf will be overhead)
From Sunday afternoon until Tuesday, the surf stays smaller, in the
waist to chest high range, but by Tuesday at sunset, one should start
to see a few headhigh + sets sneaking in. The SW swell fills in next
Wed. a.m. with 1-2 foot overhead waves and stays through Thursday (a
dawn patrol high tide is good too). Friday it drops back to headhigh
with no relief for next weekend or the following week (meaning no new
swell expected).
Caribbean - Waves are currently coming in waist to chest high but
dropping down to knee high by Monday. Some nearby tropical activity
should bring in some more chest high surf by next Thursday.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the PuraMar surf teacher in Tamarindo -
We've got a good swell running right now with waves shoulder to head
high at the rivermouth, kind of a westerly direction, it seems. Winds
have been going onshore by mid morning most days and by the time the
tide fills in it's a bit stormy. Plenty of good rides to be had,
however, even though it's a tough paddle.
remar mucho.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
This weekend looks like it could be setting up for some beautiful
sunset sessions with the remains of the swell and the later high
tides. It's going to depend on the rain patters and whether we get
late afternoon storms or not.
no.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: I predict a great weekend for
the Tamarindo rivermouth area. It's a beautiful place to catch some
sunset waves.
** From Carlos at Roca Bruja Surf Tours in Playa del Coco -
