Plenty
of East swell hitting the Caribbean coast straight on through til
midweek next week. On the Pacific, a WNW swell shows up Wednesday
bringing up the headhigh+ set count, and a WSW swell arrives on Sunday
to put the surf back overhead. Larger SW swells are starting to ply
across the ocean, and will bring waves late next week.
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We
are enjoying head high, good waves every day now that our early morning
high tides are kicking in.
WHAT TO
EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de
semana (clima y olas): The morning conditions are perfect as long as
there is some swell.
BEST PLACE TO SURF
THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana
en su area: There are waves all up and down the bay - even in Tamarindo
.
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (1/15)
The surf has been in waist high range for a while now. Sunny weather
with offshores in the morings and some hard onshores in the afternoons.
Water temp hovers at 80 degrees. Things will be changing for the better
starting tomorrow as a new SW moves in with headhigh plus waves with a
bit of NW added to the mix. The shape will be good to excellent. This
swell should last at least a couple days before it starts to backslide.
More swell on tap for this weekend. Alot of surfers around Playa Negra
right now and with high tide in the morning you might want to check out
Avellanas beachbreak or Marbella.
Fun
Head high surf, long wait, but its coming. Yeah!!! Calm before the
storm day here in Nosara, as we have a good one headed our way late
tonight... All of the forecasters are agreeing on this one, so I am
hoping they are all correct. Good tides, good winds... sweet!!!
AREA
WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Small
waves but really nice shape in the mid-tide sessions. Too much rain is
falling for this time of year, but the wind has been good to us.
WHAT
TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de
semana (clima y olas): The weekend looks like it'll be the same, but we
might get a bump on Tuesday or Wednesday for a few days.
BEST
PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este

The
reefs to the east are breaking through Tuesday, but after that the
country enters a dry spell with only a whisper of WNW swell to lap up
on the Pacific Coast while the Caribbean becomes better for snorkeling
than surfing. A bigger WNW swell takes its time arriving, only to send
chest high surf by the 16th with a little help from a weak coinciding
SW swell.

WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
Saturday is showing good size and form in the just overhead range. Even
with the strong off shores which are diminishing now, the waves have
been good all week,
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS
WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima

tides and small surf next week.
BEST
PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este

Its small, chest high at best, but its offshore. Longboarders and beginners are happy. I'm bored!
What else can I say? The swell reports don't show anything significant
for a while. Hopefully, the storm forming off New Zealand will give us
a pulse next week.
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (1/6)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The
surf at Playa Negra has been small for the last couple days. Waist to
chest high with fair to good shape for how small it is. Great fun for a
longboard. The wind has been pretty strong offshore all day with some
really strong gusts. Sunny skies and the water temp is 78 degrees. Not
much change coming in the next few days. Small waist high SW bumps will
be the norm as there is not much happening in the storm centers to the
north and south for us. A northwest swell is possible as the storm
track in the North Pacific dips low enough to send some possible stuff
our way by next weekend. We will keep you posted as the situation
changes.
Looks like fun little peelers this morning in Guiones.... I wasn't
planning on surfing, but am going to make an hour to get in the water
after seeing 6 or 7 waves peel all the way to the beach. I love these
little mornings. We have a high tide coming up at 10AM. Looking ahead
on the forecast, we may have a pretty good bump for Friday and
Saturday... other than that, not too much on the horizon.
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Small, peaky waves. Best on the high tide.
WHAT

If
you land in San Jose this week, head EAST to the reefs on the Caribbean
coast. It will be firing from the ENE and NNE by Saturday. To the west,
the week starts slow and the swell fills in even slower from the
Southwest. By Friday the head high waves provide temporary relief, but
the weekend sets are inconsistent. You'll have to wait another week for
a stronger Southwest to cross the Pacific.
Where is this big swell everyone's been anticipating? I got all psyched
up, waxed my board, set my alarm and woke up before the dawn, hoping to
score some uncrowded waves on the perfect sandbar that has formed in
front of the camp. But, much to my dismay, I was greeted with shoulder
high waves (on the sets), when I was expecting consistent overhead
barrels. Not that shoulder high waves aren't fun. Hell, I have some
really good days of surfing in shoulder high waves, but its the
expectation of late entry drops, tubing perfection, washing machine
wipeouts, spaghetti arms and nasal drains that made me feel a bit
jaded, when I realized that it wasn't going to happen. It took a few
minutes of adjusting to this reality (one that is always present for
the surfer) before I would allow myself to enjoy the gift that the
ocean brought to my door this morning. But, damn it! Why did it have to
blow out so soon?
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (1/2)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
Playa Negra is starting off the new year with fun waves and great beach
weather. Head high sets with offshores in the mornings under sunny
skies. Water temp is 83 degrees. The surf will stay in the chest to
head high range for the next few days as a series of small SW swells
come through to keep things in the fun zone. And the great thing is
you'll have lots of friends out there to have fun with. High tide is
running through the mornings this week. Check out Playa Negra early and
beat the crowd.

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
Small waist to chest high perfect waves and great tides , there has
been a head high critter once an hour from the Southwest so maybe there
is something new on the way for the NEW YEAR . Town is packed and been
pretty nice with some definite improvement in the Creep Population ,
less than we had last year and with more tourists , maybe we are making
some effect just by not letting them work their trade in front of our
homes and business ? I caught another idiot stealing some stuff from a
tourists car on Thursday and Lorenzo and I scared him to the pleading
,shaking, "please don't hit me "point and this guy was downtown
yesterday and saw my car and he hid behind a parked car ! It does work
, you don't have to hurt them just make it hard for them to do their
crap ! Watch out for your friends and clients , help somebody out who
needs it more than you do and have a wonderful prosperous and
wavefilled Happy New Year ! Pura Vida, Chuck and the Crew at W.O.W.

excellent surf sessions with well over head sets and perfect off shore

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

Shoulder to head high waves could be found this morning at several
beaches around the area, with Marbella being one of the stand out
locations, producing some clean little barrels and fun rides for
everyone on the tour.
That west swell that pounded the California coastline last week,
brought us overhead waves all weekend, but has died a bit over the past
couple of days. However, it is still giving us fun surf up and down the
coast with offshore wind conditions everywhere.
Not only that, we are expecting more swell into next week. So if you are coming down, get ready to surf all day long.
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (12/15)
The surf at Playa Negra has been fun headhigh to a few feet over on the
sets. Good shape with sunny skies and 80 degree water. Offshore wind
half the day and onshore sea breezes in the afternoons. Perfect beach
and surfing weather. It's going to get better too. Waves stay in the
chest to headhigh range for the next few days as high tide runs through
the mornings. The SW swell should give Playa Negra good shape helped
out by the offshore wind. Look for a bigger shot of SW swell for Playa
Negra and Playa Avellanas on Wednesday and Thursday of this upcoming
week.

What???? What???? All the forecasts are straight blowing it this
week... Nobody is even calling for anything here, and it is 2 feet
overhead on sets! The problem is that surfline and magic don't
understand that we pick up a NW... Not many places in CentAM do, but we
do... and it is firing. It may be our best direction, with strong bowls
to the beach, lots of power. I went over on a duckdive last night, then
two waves later had my leash snapped, so I had to surf it leashless for

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Nice waves with overhead sets have been around for a week or so.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): We are expecting a
slide for a few days into head-high as a max. But then we should be
getting a nice swell. Looks like it'll be coming right at the beach so
it'll probably only work at the point.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The point has been
working occasionally at mid-tide but I think tomorrow (Sunday) and for
the next bunch of days, the waves will be too small.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Fun head high surf Monday and then Tuesday the full SSW swell
hits with waves 1-2 foot overhead with a 15 second period. Wednesday
the swell continues to build with sets 2-3 feet overhead at exposed
south beachbreaks. Thursday the sets dissipate, leaving fun overhead
surf for the next 48 hours. Then on Saturday the first 2 foot overhead
sets arrive from the WNW (West North West powerhouse from the
Aleutians) and they continue through Monday morning.
Caribbean - Surf is chest to head high with some pretty consistent
overhead sets. Gets a foot bigger by Monday midday, but then the sets
get less frequent by dusk. Tuesday has some traces of headhigh sets,
with mostly chest high waves. The swell is a remnant by Wednesday, with
knee to waist high surf for the next four days afterward. Expect
another pulse of ENE swell by next Monday, getting back to head high.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Continued small surf for the entire coastline, waist to
occasional chest high waves. Dominical beachbreak will be best at
midtide pushing in, along with other standout beach breaks. A slight
increase in size will come Wednesday, but the chest to head high surf
only lasts a day. Then it's back to waist to chest until next Wednesday
(12/5), when a SSW brings some head high relief.
Caribbean - Chest to head high waves Sunday increase to overhead by
Monday morning. Then it grows another 2 feet to max out Tuesday with
set 2-3 foot overhead. Wednesday has fewer big sets, but consistent
overhead conditions. Thursday the swell drops down to headhigh with
some overhead sets and by Friday it's back to chest to head high.

The surf has been small, but there are the occasional set waves still
coming through that make it worth paddling out. The Papagayo winds
(offshores) have kicked in for the season, so conditions should
continue to be good. All we need now is some swell.
Luis was on fire today surfing at Playa Grande. He makes the waves look
even better than they are. I'm not sure why he is wearing a wetsuit,
other than the fact that he is so damn skinny and the offshore winds
can chill you down. He is heading down to Jaco tonight for a surf
contest. The way he has been surfing, he should do well. But then
again, with the lack of swell in the water, it could be anybodys
contest.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Small surf continues all week, chest high with a rare head
high set - a foot smaller north of Nosara. Some southwest juice gives
the southern end of the country a few head high waves on Wednesday, but
it doesn't last past Thursday morning. The next South swell isn't
looking too powerful, bringing some head high waves by next Tuesday.
Caribbean - East north east swell has hit the coast with chest to head
high surf. A few overhead sets appear late Sunday and all day Monday,
but by Tuesday the swell loses steam and backs off to chest high waves.
Wednesday will have surf waist to chest high, Thursday down to waist
high, and Friday, back to knee to waist. Another strong NE swell has
the potential to fill in the surf by next Sunday evening.

this morning, no one out... but swell starting to show. I surfed last
night, and every ten minutes or so there would be a little set pushing
through in the rib high range, and it looks to be that big today with
bigger sets. This swell won't be very strong, as it has been downgraded
by both Magic and Surfline, but both still have it improving over the
last few days. The peak will be this afternoon, and we will have a nice
low tide for it!

Pacific - Wake up Tuesday to clean chest to head high surf, lots of fun
waves for a fish or longboard. Best peaks get an overhead set each
hour. Expect the same through Friday, and then a couple of sets a foot
overhead Saturday - but only for incoming tide. Then it's back to
small, chest high with rare bigger sets all the way through next
Friday. On the 25th, you'll finally see some overhead South swell.
Caribbean - Tuesday morning shows waist high surf with an occasional
chest high set. By dusk, the waves get more consistent, with a few
bigger sets on the reefs. Wednesday wakes up to fun surf, but the swell

TS Noel is dumping lots of rain on Playa Negra. Once the storm moves
farther north, we should be back to sunny and warm in the mornings and
cloudy with rain in the afternoons. It won't be long now before this
very wet rainy season is history. The surf has been in the headhigh
range with fair shape. Water temp is 79 degrees. Look for a SW bump in
the swell with headhigh to a couple feet overhead for the second half
of this week. The wind should stay calm in the mornings and turn
onshore by mid day. Looking into next week, we should see a large SW
swell move into Playa Negra by Tuesday with easily double over head
waves with good shape.

Good Morning! I surfed before doing the report today, as I wanted to
catch the lower tide early this morning. It paid off, and was the best
session that I have had since getting back. I surfed for about 2 hours
and had 25-30 waves... with 7 or 8 going to the beach, some 5 turns
waves in there. It had good power, and it was evident that there is a
new swell in the water. The water is still a bit cold... never reported
that before here, but I am betting about 74 degrees. Surf was in the
head high range today with some larger peaks... it was holding up good,
with nice shoulders. The week has begun! Looking ahead, it is only
getting bigger from here for the next four days. It looks to be peaking
Weds/Thurs at 7 ft at 16-18 seconds... Not sure how big that will be...
I am hoping double overhead peaks, and still manageable... but we'll
see.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Waves will be headhead to overhead Tuesday through Thursday,
coming from the WSW and SW. Lots of set waves, and still lots of rain
showers. Friday the weather clears up, but the waves clear out leaving
cleaner chest to head high surf. Saturday and Sunday morning stay
small, but by Sunday evening a few overhead sets show at sunset. By
next Monday a SW swell greets the new week with surf overhead, growing
to 2 foot overhead by next Wednesday.
Caribbean - Waist high surf Tuesday, with the sets getting more
infrequent throughout the day. Wednesday and the rest of the week will
be knee high with a rare waist high set at the remote beaches. The
first strong NE swell shows up on the radar a week from Tuesday, 11/5.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (10/25)-
Another sunny day. I don't think it has rained at all this entire week,
which is a welcome relief from this otherwise monsoonal rainy season.
Waves are good too, with chest to shoulder high waves breaking out in
front of our hotel, and the conditions are still glassy and its almost
1:00 pm. Right now, the tide is rising and the waves are a bit slower
than earlier, but still very surfable. I'd suggest taking out the
longboard for some fun rides. Water quality is improving, due to the
lack of rain. The bay is clearing up and the ocean is starting to look
inviting again. Lets, hope this continues. A month from now, we will be
wondering if the constant deluge this rainy season was real. We are
expecting the swell to pick up over the next few days. Keep checking
back for updates.
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (10/27)
We have had beautiful sunny skies with no rain for the last few days.
It rained a bit today but that is normal for this time of year. The
surf has been small with fun shape at the incoming tides. Water temp is
83 degrees and the water quality at Playa Negra is good. Look for an
increase in swell from the SW for this weekend with well overhead waves
with good shape. The wind should be light offshore in the mornings but
coming onshore fairly early. It's a very low tide all though the
mornings this week. Watch out for those rocks. The surf stays in the
headhigh to overhead range through the end of the month. Happy
Holloween.

AREA REPORTS
** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (10/19)-
What can I say??? It has been very rainy (extreme flooding throughout
Costa Rica) and the result is chocolate brown water in Tamarindo
accompanied with non-stop onshore winds for the past week, not the best
surfing conditions. I guess that's why its called "The Wet Season".
On a brighter note, there is swell!!! Its been head high for the past
week. Hopefully, the winds will clean up a bit in the morning. The
report from Avellanas is that the water was much clearer with lots of
potential if someone can turn off the onshore wind machine. I'll talk
to Joe!!!
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (10/19)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
The surf has been small and blown out for the last few days with rain
pretty much 24/7. We are suppose to get less rain this upcoming week
and I'll believe it when I see it. The surf should pick too out of the
SW with waves on Saturday reaching in the double overhead range. If
that pesky onshore wind stays down it should be fun. We have the high
tide running through the mornings right now so the early birds could
get some surfable waves.

into the bay. It is not raining at report time, but we did get some

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Monday starts out 1 to 2 foot overhead, smaller with the tide
going out, and the macking sets arriving with incoming tide. Lots of
chop due to the wind and rain (what else can you expect for October)
but the dawn patrol will be the call for later in the week. Thursday
shows the waves dropping down to overhead. As the tide fills in Friday
afternoon, a new round of SW swell arrives, pushing sets up to 2 foot
overhead. Saturday the waves reach their peak at 2-3 foot overhead,
with even bigger freak sets every 30 minutes. It drops off two feet
Sunday, and stays a foot overhead through next Tuesday.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Waves are chest to head high up north and a foot bigger south
of Hermosa. The SSW swell arrives Monday as the tide fills in, and
waves will increase to 1-2 foot overhead. The same size swell sticks
around through Wednesday, with bigger sets in the morning. Then it
drops a foot for Thursday and Friday. Saturday a SW swell fills in the
south facing beaches with more 1 foot overhead waves for the next three
days. After that, it looks to be small (chest to head) since there's no
other wave makers out there.
Caribbean - The right coast starts out with waist high surf, but by
Monday is knee high and then it is flat - great snorkeling conditions

Today the surf backed off a bit from the overhead surf that was here
all weekend. The report from Witch's Rock was shoulder high with the
occasional head high set, but perfect A-frame peaks. Out in front of
our hotel the surf was in the waist to chest high range but very fun
even after the wind came up this afternoon. The forecast is more small
surf until Sunday / Monday when the waves should get overhead again.
For those that care, Luis Castro traveled down to Mal Pais / Santa
Teresa for the first surf contest of the season. He won the airshow
with some sick spinning aerials. I have no idea what to call some of
the maneuvers he does. All I know is that he can blast. He also entered
the Bodyboarding division and won that too. Nice job Luis!!!

The surf here has been small the last couple days. Waist to chest high
and mixed up. Onshore wind early. The full moon low tide running
through the mornings doesn'r help much either. Partly cloudy in the
mornings and raining in the afternoons. Water temp is 87 degrees. Look
for continued small and weak through the weekend with an increase from
the SW for the start of the week.

Good Sunday folks... How are my people today? I ate chicken wings and
drank great beer last night, watched my Gators lose, but everything
can't always be perfect... Surf today in Guiones should be pretty good,
as we have a 4 foot at 16 seconds swell in the water, at 216 degrees,
which is about our best direction, but it is raining and the water is
pretty dirty... Here is the note from Ry-dog our surf reporter for the
next little while... "Hey, there was some pretty heavy rain late last
night/early this morning. as such, the water is looking fairly sucio
and there was not a soul out there at report time. unfortunate, because
last night was small but super fun...nice formed waves which i shredded
diligently with the Webskins. it is still raining lightly at the
moment, but there is a chance it could clear up this afternoon and
perhaps be some good surfing. It looked like there was still a few
little ones trying to roll in right now." And I do have some good news
on the bridge front!!! According to Bobbi Johnson, who is about as in
there as you can get in Nosara, there is a temporary bridge being put
in very soon... If you have more details, shoot them over, and we can
keep the folks informed... Thanks for the note Bobbi..

Pacific - The week starts strong with surf 2-3 foot overhead on the

The last couple days we have had plenty of rain. Raining all day but
the surf has been fun anyways. The wind has been offshore most of the
time and the waves are head high with bigger sets. The water temp is in
the low 80s. Lots of runoff into the ocean from all the rain. We have a
good swell coming for this weekend. SW with a perfect direction for
Playa Negra. Look for well overhead waves with good shape staying with
us through the first half of this upcoming week. High tide is running
through the mornings and that's a good thing for Playa Negra. It should
be real fun at Playa Avellanas as well. Crowds are at a minimum this
time of year.

Well, it isn't firing, but it is the best it has been in a little
while... some head high waves that look make-able... The wind is light
onshore at report time, and it didn't storm too bad last night, so it
isn't as funky as it has been lately. All-in-all, folks would be
skipping work in FL, so I guess it is all prospective. I think I will
grab a surf after throwing this report up. We have a low tide that
passed at 6AM, so it should be holding up a bit more later in the
morning. I surfed last night and caught four closeouts and paddled
in... couldn't find a make-able section... I only saw one guy get a
good wave, and it was Luigi back-dooring a left barrel, it was sweet,
but the ride was less than 3 seconds. Hey, has anyone driven to Nicoya
this week?

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Waves will be overhead on Monday on Tuesday, with sets every
twenty minutes a foot bigger. By Wednesday the SSW swell dies a bit,
down to head high with plenty of overhead set waves at the south facing
beaches. Stays the same for Thursday and Friday morning. By the evening
session, some straight south swell sets arrive at 1-2 foot overhead.
Saturday dawn patrol is the call with surf 2 foot overhead, bigger sets
down south. Due to the angle, some spots will be small since they are
protected. This swell will strengthen by next Monday, up to 2-3 foot
overhead through Sept. 25th.
Caribbean - Whatever minumal surf there is, mostly knee high with a
rare bigger set at the reefs, will be gone by Wednesday. Then it's flat
through Saturday, with a tiny chance of tropical waves for the
following week.

AREA REPORTS
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (9/15) -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones: The tides have moved to the morning session and the
waves this week have been exceptional for this time of the year. I saw
someone take off deep on a left on the south side of the main break and
get totally barreled for a hundred yards on a slow motion, stand up,
tube on Friday afternoon. You had to pick 'em, but the rides of a
lifetime are possible. The wind for the last couple of days has been
off shore, or slightly on shore, for nearly ideal conditions for a
somewhat crossed up swell.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is a little mixed up, so only a
lucky wind condition will pull some shape out of it at this well
overhead size.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (9/14)
This is the best time of year for surf at Playa Negra. The past few
days have seen smaller surf in the head high range with partly cloudy
skies and some afternoon rain. The water temp is 84 degrees. We have a
SW swell starting to show today and should peak out by the end of this
weekend. Head high to a couple feet overhead with fair to good shape.
We might be in for a little more rain and onshore wind coming up this
weekend. With the higher tides starting to run through the mornings,
get out there early. This is also the most uncrowded time of year here
at Playa Negra. Enjoy!

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (9/16)
My Gators worked Tennessee yesterday... we found the game online for
ten bucks and watched it streaming in the office, Florida/Tennessee on
one computer, the ASP World Tour on the other... great afternoon, then
we went and surfed empty head high Guiones last night... Anyways, Surf
this morning is in the head high range, it is super glassy, but we had
a dead high tide at 6:30 this morning so it needs some time to start
breaking good... if you are longboarding, get out there, it looks
pretty fun for the thicker equipment. My rule of thumb for tides here
is that if it is under 2 feet overhead, you should wait for a lower
tide, at least low to mid... Over 2 feet overhead, the high tide,
depending on the angle, can get real good, with mushier sections
outside, but when it is bigger you can get real heavy inside
sections... it is fun getting to know this wave so well. There were
three folks out at report time. Have a great Sunday, E.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Dropping SSW swell leaves waves a foot overhead on Sunday,
and Monday the sets get farther apart, overhead at the better
beachbreaks. Tuesday it stays consistent at headhigh with an hourly
overhead set, Wednesday and Thursday are a foot smaller with a 10
second period, but by Friday it's back up to overhead and stays like
that through the weekend (13 sec. period). Nothing big coming until
next Thursday from the SW.
Caribbean - Not much surf for this week, knee high mostly with a rare
waist high set. No tropical storms are expected to form, but that means
little considering next week is the height of the hurricane season.

AREA REPORTS
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (9/8) -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: As
we move into the afternoon high tides, this strong (double overhead)
swell has less probability for a good session. The really experienced
surfers are going out anyway and coming up with a good ride or two.
It's hard to tell which waves will work or not.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

tides move into the afternoon and might be doable if the wind doesn't
come up.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (9/8)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
We've been having a good run of SW swells with double overhead surf
through all the tides. The last few afternoons have been very good with
not much wind and partly cloudy skies. Water temp is in the mid 80s.
Look for smaller surf for the next couple days and then a big jump in
the swell with both S and SW for a combination that could see Playa
Negra with double to triple overhead waves by this weekend. With the low
tide running through the mornings this week, check out Little Hawaii
early for big waves with no crowds.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (9/9)
Oh yeah! We still have well overhead surf this morning at Guiones and a
dead low tide at report time. It is making for another session of heavy
surf, which seems to have everyone excited. There weren't many folks
surfing, and I didn't realize how big it was until I was cropping
photos and saw the guy in photo 1... that wasn't even that big of a
wave... so there is still some size out there for sure. I got up late
today, and snapped photos at 7:45, and from what I heard there was some
morning sickness on it early according to Mario... but it is getting
better, and we could be in for a good later morning session with the
pushing tide... I may be pullng out the K-step up today.
** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais) - (9/7)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: SW
swell, overhead, light wind in the morning. Afternoon thunderstorms.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell seems to be
weakening. Thunderstorms expected every day.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear
este fin de semana en su area: Playa Carmen is consistent.
** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (9/8)-
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Ah, this is what we expect from
Dominical. We've now had two weeks of overhead waves that are ridable
at all but dead low tide. A little bit of on shore wind has been hard
on the mid-day sessions, but mornings and evenings offer 4 hours of
good surf per day. The point has been working at lower tides, but is
not very big and many people are surfing the inner shelf as opposed to
the outer boil. If you wait at the outer boil during lower tides, you
can usually get a good overhead wave about every 15 minutes or so.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): I haven't seen signs
of a swell yet, but we should have double overhead for the entire
weekend. Mornings and evenings will be good at the point. The beach
will probably be closed out, but it has been so good with the larger
waves for weeks, that I am hoping the beach is still open for this
swell. Best to operate with thick leashes and epoxy boards!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: As mentioned, I think the
beach will close out and the point will warm up through Sunday.
However, there have been a few souls over the last few weeks who have
been pushing through the bigger beach break and I hope we may continue
to see good surf at the beach as well.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - If you picked one week to visit it should be this week.
Powerful 1 to 2 foot overhead surf on Monday, coming from the 205-210
mark, so it's SSW. This swell sticks around through Wednesday, and
Thursday it drops only a foot with stick a few mackin sets. Friday is
the same, but by Saturday morning the waves pick up 2 feet, as another
SSW swell fills in with waves 2 to 3 foot overhead at south facing
beaches. (A foot smaller north of Mal Pais) BE ON THE ALERT FOR
FLOODING AT HIGH TIDES !!
Caribbean - It's too quiet Monday morning, but by evening a few chest
high wave file in from Hurricane Felix. It grows overnight, welcoming
dawn patrollers with overhead surf and getting bigger throughout
Tuesday. By midday it's 2-3 foot overhead and firing, but accompanied
by wind and rain. Wednesday it's still rainy, but the surf is more
managable at head high. Thursday is back to small, knee to waist surf.

Today we were busy cataloging the new shipment of WRSC surfboards that
just arrived yesterday. Meanwhile, the surf picked up a couple feet
just in front of our hotel bringing some head high waves on the bigger
sets. We got back just about sunset and the waves looked great with
nice glassy conditions and partly cloudy skies.
And from Friday.. The surf was chest to shoulder high in front of the
camp early, but the dropping tide made Avellanas the best choice. So,
we brought our graduating class to test their skills. It was a
beautiful sunny day with a few scattered clouds coming in the evening
making for a gorgeous sunset. The report from Witch's Rock was head
high A-frame peaks breaking left and right with glassy conditions.

Fair to poor shape as all the rain has taken the sand from the beach

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (9/1)-
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Overhead with an occasional double
are gracing the beach at Dominical. However, they are very peaky and
too soft at high tide. So, the best tide is mid-tide. The wind has been
good until about 8:00 am and then in the afternoons after about 3:00
pm.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND: The swell should be growing through next
week with very nice waves arriving on Tuesday or Wednesday. There is a
big storm off of Peru that should be sending even bigger waves after
that...who knows.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach is working
particularly well. The waves are very peaky and it is easy to paddle

I don't get this... it seems like we just can't get a day to line up
just right... we have the waves, and the tides now, but not the winds,
I guess i should just go with it and start worrying about perfect surf
in December. Surf this morning looks pretty fun, it is in the head high
range, with some larger sets... we are at about a dead low right now at
630AM, and waves are breaking top to bottom... which may be the
redeeming factor this morning, as I saw a few nice little pits, that
were makeable. Anyways, it is probably worth surfing, could lock into a
good one to talk about for a few days.

because of the small waves. However, the low tide waves have had, at
times, some great and fun shoulders, little tubes and have been surfed
without much effort.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): By Sunday we expect
some big waves, and if the forecasts mean anything, by Tuesday we
should all be at the point or down south. We've got a BIG swell coming.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach will be best

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific
- Solid SSW surf in the foot overhead range, continuing until Wednesday
morning. During the afternoon tidal switch the swell drops quickly, and
by sunset is down to overhead. Thursday and Friday continues with head
high to overhead waves and only by Saturday does it fall to head high.
Then by Sunday evening the first sets of another SSW arrives, a foot
overhead on the sets. Next Monday and Tuesday, more 1-2 foot overhead
surf. Then a couple of smallish days before a powerful SW arrives on
September 1st.
Caribbean
- Hurricane Dean sends overhead surf on Monday. It drops down to chest
high by Tuesday, and by Wednesday the swell is history, down to waist
high. Thursday through Saturday are quiet, knee to waist high. By
Sunday, another tropical system appears to push more chest high East
swell to the coast.
High Tide - 8.49 feet at 6:45 a.m. High Tide - 1.32 feet at 12:54 p.m.

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: By
Friiday afternoon this fairly clean swell was too large for our beach

until it drops some.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Too big for Playa Grande
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (8/17)
The surf has been terrible for the past week as we had a serious low pressure system hovering over Costa Rica
causing serious flooding, choppy surf and generally miserable surfing
conditions. The only surf to report was the great tsunami scare of
2007, due to the 7.9 earthquake off the coast of Lima, Peru.
Of course, we evacuated to high ground barely in time to avoid the
devastation caused by the 50cm high tsunami. Wow!! The weather broke
two days ago, but the surf was still poor. That is until today. Today,
the surf was shoulder to head high at Playa Avellanas for our
graduation surf trip this morning. The wind remained glassy until about
10:00am and we are hoping for a nice glass off session in front of our
hotel in Tamarindo.
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (8/18)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
The surf has picked up with a very steep south swell moving in for the
weekend. Some double overhead waves on the mid tides. Sunny in the
mornings and raining in the afternoon. Water temp in the mid 80s.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

the incoming tide for some big waves.

Good morning folks! Surf still has some size on it today, but the tide
is killing it. Dead high at report time.... I bet some spots North may
be firing, but the river is way too high. I am hoping that the tide
will drop out a bit and it will get real good, but who knows, it always
seems to be missing something lately... We can have the size and tide,
but the wind will be a little off, or the wind and tide and a small
weak swell... One of these days is going to line up just perfect...
can't wait. Have a good Sunday... when does football start? E. Elle
McPherson is surfing in Guiones this week... our history goes way back,
she was the first women that I ever saw topless, we were in the Bahamas,
and whe was doing a photo shoot... I had the chance to talk with her
the other day in the water and told her the story... it made her
blush... it was pretty funny...

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
It's 6-8 ft and heavy. Unfotunately, it's very disorganized with strong
currents and closing out. There are few bombs that are makeable.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

overhead waves and then decreasing during the beginning of the
week. Hopefully we'll see some cleaner waves with less current.

Great week here lots of excitement including running to the hills for
the Tsunami warning , thank God it didn't happe! Surf today has come up
a bit , overhead sets with a bit of storm bump involved and yep its
going to be exciting here in Jaco for the contest, I figure some heavy
drops will be taken , its low tide and rising swell this weekend! Biz
is good lots of people around and once again , don't blame it on the
MUNI or The POLICE or anybody else, if you see trash pick it up, if you
see a crime in action scream, call the cops whatevers the creeps are
going to run and if you catch em in the act make sure you hold em till
the cops come and don't accept a sob story ! Send em to Jail, spend the
time to write em up and go to the hearing ! Its OUR responsibility to
get the creeps off the street ! If you buy drugs off the creep at the
corner its your fault someone steals from you because it's the same
dude ! If its wrong don't do it, if its right promote it ! If you own a
business in C.R, BUY A GARBAGE CAN and put it in front of your business
, hire a guard or a buy a camera to scare off the thieves, they don't
like anybody taking their picture . Put up a sign that says You have a
security monitor in place , even if it doesn't work it keeps them
thinking ! Don't live in fear pass it on to them, DEMAND RESPECT !
Sorry but I am tired of hearing everybody blame someone else including
the tourist for the theft problem, its OUR problem and WE can fix it !

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Surf stays headhigh to overhead on Monday (a foot smaller
Nosara and north), but by Tuesday midday a Southwest swell pushes in a
few 1-2 foot overhead sets. Wednesday it drops down a foot, and
overhead waves stick around for Thursday and Friday morning. Then
throughout the day on Friday, a few 1-3 foot overhead waves come in
each hour, growing as the day gets later. Saturday and Sunday see a
strong 2-3 foot overhead south swell with a 12 second period, with more
surf for the following week.
Caribbean - Waves are knee high at best Monday morning, and Tuesday you
will see only a few waist high sets throughout the day. On Wednesday
morning, there's more waist high surf which stick around through
Thursday. Friday is back to small knee high stuff, and Saturday there's
another ENE pulse sending waist to chest high waves for the weekend.
Two tropical systems, one southeast of Cuba and the second moving
towards the Lesser Antilles, could easily push up the surf a couple of
feet this week and next.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Monday morning maxes at only overhead, but those set waves
have some juice. A south swell that's been brewing all week slowly
arrives Tuesday morning with waves a foot overhead. Then it gets more
consistent Wednesday and Thursday, with sets a foot bigger. If you're
up north, some of the swell is blocked, but others will be shacking up.
Friday the sets start to dry up and by Saturday morning, it drops back
to overhead and it's head high by Sunday. Long range is smallish for
the next week plus. Get up early to catch the winds right, it can get
fickle past 8 a.m.
Caribbean - The ENE swell starts to fizzle from head high sets down to
chest high by Monday afternoon. Tuesday and Wednesday see waist high
surf, with stomach high sets. And by Thursday just trace waves, knee
high with some rare waist high sets through Sunday. However, keep your
eyes on tropical formations that move under the Lesser Antilles as they
can bring wind swell.

Today, the surf was chest to shoulder high with glassy conditions. My
brother in law, Detlef and I checked it out at day break and decided to
head over to Casitas where we scored some really fun waves. The wind
came onshore by noon, along with the low tide.
This evening the waves were really good out in front of our hotel and
the winds turned offshore at about 4:00pm making for another great
sunset session.
The usual suspects were out. Ricardo and Carlos were dominating the
waves, weaving in and out of the crowd of beginners that sat on the
inside.

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:

hope that holds. I have a new board built for speed, and haven't gotten

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Surf stays chest to head high for Sunday and Monday, with a
few overhead sets at the best breaks. Tuesday morning a weak SW pushes
the surf up to consistent head high conditions, but doesn't last past
Thursday. More chest to head fun conditions for the Friday and the
weekend, and continuing all through next week. A long range SSW swell
will push in a few 1-2 foot overhead sets the following weekend, so
watch for it.
Caribbean - Waves are waist to chest high for the rest of the weekend.
On Monday a ENE swell pumps head high waves to the reefs, and maxes out
on Tuesday with some overhead sets. By Wednesday it drops a foot, back
to chest high, but a stormy Caribbean Sea will send a freak overhead
set through each hour. It stays around chest high for the rest of the

Playa Negra has been good the past couple days. Head high to a couple
feet overhead with good shape through the morning high tides. Water
temp is hovering in the mid 80s. Beautiful sunny skies in the mornings
with light offshores until about noon when it switches to fairly strong
onshores. It is still raining almost every afternoon. The next couple

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Sunday - Waves are still overhead from the SSW, unless you
are north of Mal Pais, where it's headhigh. Nosara to Grande is chest
to head and fun. Monday - Expect waves to drop to chest high throughout
the day in the small spots, but plenty of head high + peaks come in if
you travel south. Tuesday to Thursday - small surf, stomach to chest
high with only headhigh sets down south of Jaco. Friday afternoon, the
first overhead sets of a SSW kick in with a 11 second period. By
Saturday afternoon it's a foot overhead, and Sunday it's 2 foot
overhead and firing at those left points. This swell lasts through next
Wednesday morning.
Caribbean - Sunday afternoon surf is head high to overhead, lots of
sets. By Monday the sets subside, leaving head high peaks and on
Tuesday it drops another foot. Wednesday's leftovers are waist high
with a rare bigger set. Thursday shows another ENE pulse with waves
head high from sets coming every half hour. And on Friday there are
still plenty of chest high waves to share. The ENE swell fades quickly
so it looks to be small for the weekend.

Waves this week in Tamarindo have been mostly chest high at high

The waves have been good at the rivermouth all week. On Tuesday, we had
head high dredging barrels as the tide started to drop. The current was

Buenos, I expected the surf to be smaller today as we are waiting for
new swell to arrive, and my first 4 minutes on the beach I didn't see

with the rising tide it won't last too long. On the forecast, we are

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Surf Sunday will be chest to head high and clean from the
SSW. A Southwest starts to fill in Monday up to overhead and peaks
Tuesday with sets a foot overhead. The sets Wednesday double up from a
WSW pulse, but there's not too much size. Thursday it fades to
headhigh, more of the same for Friday. Saturday and Sunday it drops to
chest high, with still a few head high sets. The best spots get some
overhead sets every hour, but will be crowded.
Caribbean - July starts with chest to head high surf from an ENE wind
swell then picks up to overhead on Monday. Tuesday afternoon tops out
with sets 1-2 foot overhead. Wednesday is a foot smaller, still fun,
and there's more waves as well, yet a little smaller by day's end.
Thursday it drops down to head high and by Saturday this swell is gone,
but another is right behind it for next week.

nosotros pero el viento ha sido off-shore y las olas de a la cintura o

The major south swell that came through our area was just too south and
Playa Negra didn't see much of it. A few head high sets and that was
about it. We have had some unseasonably strong offshore winds the last
couple days. Beautiful clear skies and not much rain. Could the little
summer be a bit early this year? Coming up look for smaller surf as
this swell backs down. Chest high on the sets until this coming weekend
when a SW starts to show on Saturday with a perfect direction for us
here at Playa Negra. It should be well overhead with good shape.

Well, I get a surf this morning, and boy am I stoked I made that
decision. It was head high, but dead low tide and rights were zipping
across the sandbar. I pulled in a few times, and kept getting my head
whacked, and finally got a big one to open up right and had a pretty
good barrel. Almost standing. Yeah!!!! I am still stoked on that one.
Surf this morning looks pretty fun, I wasn't planning on surfing, but
after looking at it, think I will have a go. Sets are in the head high
range, wtih some larger peaks, and form is good. We have a low tide
coming up at around 8AM. Winds are light and variable at report time,
and I think it will be clean for a while.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Powerful, almost straight south swell arriving today and
building in strength Sunday. Waves will be 1-3 foot overhead Sunday
morning with bigger sets and a 14 second period. Monday is the peak,
sets breaking every ten minutes double overhead. Beaches not facing
south will be 3 to 4 feet smaller so you can still find fun surf in
Tamarindo Bay and a few point breaks. Swell lasts through Wednesday,
dropping down to a foot overhead Tuesday and overhead Wednesday.
Thursday looks smaller still, dropping another foot, and for Friday and
the weekend expect surf chest to head high with infrequent sets. Next
swell on tap is next Monday afternoon from the SW pushing surf up to
1-2 feet overhead.
Caribbean - The weekend has some fun waves in the waist to chest high
range, but the real deal starts up Monday morning from an ESE swell
pushing in overhead surf at dawn and building to 2 foot overhead by
dusk. Tuesday it maxes out at 2+ foot overhead with plently of set
waves and by Wednesday it fades fast - down to head high for the
evening and Thursday morning. By that afternoon though, another ENE
fills in with 2-3 foot overhead surf that will build and continue
through next weekend.

It is showing on the Bouys at 5 ft, at 13-14 seconds, but this swell
may have too much south in it for Guiones. I bet Pavones is firing
today. The good news is, that there is a a lot of current flowing
North, which sometimes comes before the swell, and if it does fill in
today, the South Swells usually have a real good shape. There will
still be surf today, with sets in the chest high range, kind of mushy
at the incoming tide, we have a high around 9AM. Wind is offshore, and
the surf is nice and clean!
