TIDES *for Friday - add 50 min. each day after
Low Tide - (-1.21) ft. at 10:49 AM
High Tide - 10.32 ft. at 5:08 PM
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Strong tides swings expected for this weekend! Surf chest
to head high up north from a consistent WNW, best up at Ollie's.
Farther south, the weekend holds a little more size - 1-2 foot
overhead until Wednesday, when it drops down to head high. Friday
should see a foot inscrease and more sets coming from some long range
SW filling in with some overhead sets. Dawn patrols are the call for
this week! Expect a powerful SW to arrive 3 days after the next new
moon in the first week of April.
Caribbean - The weekend will see surf waist high with a few chest
high sets, and remain that way until Tuesday. Then for the rest of
the week, it looks small - knee to waist - until another ESE appears
next Sunday evening.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
The typical off-shores came back this week with all their strength
and the water temperature has dropped considerably. Waves are about
waist high, maybe picking up just a bit today. Rumor has it, we're
going to be getting more soon and we're ready for it!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
This weekend we hope for some good waves to go with our great wind.
If you have a spring suit you will definately need it out there.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
This weekend should be an easy one for waves considering the off-
shore wind and mid-day high tides. If the swell is west enough, the
Tamarindo rivermouth may start peeling, if it's more south head to
Langosta.
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
On Thurs. all the breaks in the bay were working at some tide. The
wind blew light off shore all day and the waves were generally
smooth. You still had to pic um due to the squared off nature of this
swell which has been building since Mon. There were a few over head
and a half sets in front of the hotel and broken boards were spotted.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The upper level inverted trough on the East Coast of the U. S.
reported by meteorologist Tim Deegan, which helps squeeze our off
shores through this part of Costa Rica, is predicted to dissipate
over the week end. Off shores are what we are all about so be careful
as we move into the afternoon window next week.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Any of the dozen or so breaks in the bay could be good at different
tides. The elusive Tamarindo Estero mouth, which is only about 4 min.
from the hotel on the Playa Grande service road, has been interesting
on incoming tide.
** From Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
The surf finally picked up on Wednesday, with the southwest showing
in great form. Wednesday and Thursday both head high with bigger
sets, the wind is great- blowing offshore but not too hard.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The surf should
stick around for a couple of days, dropping this weekend.
Fortunately, we should see the next swell a day or two later. I guess
this is the official start of south swell season...
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -
Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point (always finding this question
amusing), if you can't get on the boat any south facing beach will
have surf. Check out Playa Grande if you're in the Tamarindo area.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
High tides this week have been extremely high, making mid-tide in
Tamarindo preferable to high tide. Waves max out at around shoulder
high, then drop and become smaller as the water level increases. It's
been super-hot with off-shores lasting only until 9-11 AM.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
Get up early this weekend and surf the waves before the wind
switches. It's hard to say what to expect since the wind is behaving
so uncharacteristically. I am sure that whatever we get is going to
be the best in the early morning.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
I think this weekend has a lot of potential. Playa Grande should be
very good in the morning, along with the beach break in Avellanas.
Langosta should be better later in the morning and the Tamarindo
beach break will be good at sun-up. Creo que este fin de semana tiene
muchas posibilidades.
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The early morning, light off shore, session on Thurs. was shoulder to
head high with good, consistent form. The sand bars are less than
what they could be and are shortening the tidal windows and length of
rides.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The tides are perfect for the weekend and the wind is beginning to
cooperate finally with the possibility of double sessions.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

The entire bay has some surf with the breaks in front of the hotel as
the main focus.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - This weekend will be the time to go east and get some good
surf while the west coast is left with chest to head high, clean
peaks, a foot smaller up around Tamarindo. The next swell arrives
slowly from the South. Tuesday you'll see a few overhead sets come
through and by Wednesday at dawn it will be consistent overhead. Add
another foot for Thursday, and mix it with a long range WNW swell. By
next weekend, surf should stay overhead and the tides will be great
for a double sesh.
Caribbean - You will not be sorry if you come to the right coast to
surf. This weekend, waves in the head high to overhead range, and by
Monday it jacks up another 2 feet. This ENE stays until Tuesday
afternoon. Wednesday is another overhead day and Thursday the swell
reintensifies, building to 2-3 foot overhead with bigger sets at the
best spots. The size then drops a foot by next weekend.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
It's small here in the Tamarindo bay which is nothing new. Mornings
are clean with light off-shore winds, but the rainy-season weather
pattern contines, and the wind is going on-shore between 9 and 9:30
AM. Clear skies, but on-shore winds. Is this El Nino? High tide
brings us waves of about 3 - 4 feet, but by that time the wind has
been on it for several hours.
Sera
El Nino? A la marea alta, hay olas de 3 o 4 pies, pero a esa hora el
viento es problematico.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
It's going to be sunny and gorgeous, but the surf is going to totally
depend on the wind. In the mornings when the wind is good, the tide
will be out, so it might be a good weekend to clean the house or do
some board repair!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Langosta is our only hope. There's not enough swell to break the
Tamarindo rivermouth at low tide, so if there are nice morning waves
nearby they will be in Langosta. Avellanas has some low tide breaks
for early mornings, too.
mananas tambien.
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The swell has been slowly building for the last few days, but the
wind is eddying on this side of the cape and
keeping the well overhead surf in a slight funk, or even junky, at
the best tides.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

If the wind straightens out, it could be epic since the swell is a
good size for powerful, clean surf.

TIDES *for Friday - add 50 min. each day after
High Tide - 9.26 ft. at 5:54 AM
Low Tide - (-0.75) ft. at 11:56 AM
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - This weekend will see more surf in the chest to head high
range, with a few overhead sets coming from the SSW. This swell came
up from Peru, and is accompanied by another down south by Tahiti,
producing more waves per set. The swells die out Monday and by
Tuesday should be small up north, from waist to chest high, and chest
to head high in the central and southern zones. This trend continues
to the weekend, when another SSW swell should arrive. One nice thing
are the tides, with high tide at dawn and dusk providing two classic
beachbreak session daily.
Caribbean - Now is not the time for diving, there is surf!! Waves
head high to two foot overhead on some of the sets. Will get more
consistent by Sunday and for the rest of the week, the size should
remain the same. Time to check those reef breaks. Best to wake up
early, when the winds are non-existent.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
We had a one-day swell on Tuedsay of this week, but now we're back to
shore break, especially since the tides are so high. It's been
unusually cloudy for February and the winds have been going onshore
in the late morning.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
It should be interesting, seeing as the wind isn't behaving the way I
would have expected. Morning is definately the time to surf whether
we get more waves or not.
portando my raro. Definativamente la manana es el tiempo para
surfear, suban las olas o no.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Not much is going on in Tamarindo right now and the afternoons by the
estuary have more surfers than waves. It would be a great weekend to
strap the board on the car and go on a little trip!
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The shoulder high, silky, glassy, dawn patrol on Thurs. was classic.
It was very fishy. A ten pound, jumping bonito practically landed in
my lap and I surfed over the top of a 5 foot bull shark in two feet
of clear water. Not for the squeamish. The window only lasted for a
little over an hour as the tide fell, then the wind switched to
onshore in the afternoon and blew out the afternoon session. The
evening glass off was ridable, but sloppy.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The high tides are moving into the morning with great wind conditions
and the windows are expanding every day. Great conditions for surfing
if the swell holds or jumps a little.

TIDES *for Friday - add 50 min. each day after
High Tide - 7.05 ft. at 1:13 PM
Low Tide - 1.37 ft. at 6:51 AM
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Saturday morning looks good for the dawn patrol with some
head high glass, but the size drops again in the afternoon and on
Sunday. The next SWer arrives on Monday, with head high to overhead
waves for the southern and central coasts. Will be consistent all
through the week, but only chest high up north until next Wednesday,
when a WNW swell moves out over the Pacific and sends back some head
high juice for next weekend. Keep your eyes peeled for a the first
good South of the year, coming Monday the following week.
Caribbean - More good surf expected over the weekend, getting to 1-2
overhead at the beachbreaks and bigger at key locales. The ESE swell
strengthens Sunday pushing 3+ overhead surf to the reefs. Stays big
until Wednesday afternoon, the quickly fades, leaving chest high
clean waves for next weekend.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
Another week of small surf in the bay, waves up to waist high
breaking in fairly shallow water. Some mornings this week have had
less wind, but it always cranks up by the middle of the day. Anybody
remember how we had a spell like this last year at this time? Otra
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
Sunday could be our lucky day, as reports are predicting a bit of a
pick up Sunday and Monday. Don't expect any changes in the wind
patterns, though.
lunes. No espere grandes cambios en el viento.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
It looks like the swell direcion is shifty (as there is little swell
to speak of), so head for open beaches like Nosara and Avellanas.
Avellanas.
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
Thurs. the small small, perfect conditions we have been enjoying for
the last several weeks continued to produce in the head high range on
the good sets. The long waits were well worth the wind swept perfect
lefts and rights when they finally came. The water is still warm for
this time of the year and I am surfing the mid day
sessions without my light vest.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The high tide is moving into the afternoon, but we should be all
right with the off shores in the afternoon if our current conditions
hold which is what I expect. High tide is getting a little too full
for small surf now that the moon is pulling.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
There are small waves everywhere in the bay with the bigger sets
focusing in front of Las Tortugas Hotel during incoming tide.

** From Chuck at Chosita del Surf in Jaco -
Waves are 2/3 ft or so and tide are soooo bad for me here in jaco !
Hermosa is suffering from straight on swell so its pretty closed out
too ! Maybe a quick ride to Estirillos center is the call but with
higher tide so late in the day its going to be a tough one, contest
in Quepos national circuit and its going to be SMALL so ride a

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Northern Pacific coast has lucked out from WNW swells that
have pegged the coast with surf headhigh or bigger on the sets. In
the Nicoya armpit, Jaco will not see the swell, but it may hit Tulin
and farther south, once again waves head high with a few bigger sets.
And the southern Pacific will be smaller - chest high +. These sizes
will be steady all weekend and into the beginning of next week, with
a drop in size by next Wednesday a foot for all beaches.
Caribbean - Waze size drops from head high to knee high between
Saturday and Monday. Next swell due for the right coast on Tuesday,
about midday will see an increase from knee to waist, to head high by
evening. On Wednesday, size increase to 1-2 overhead and by Thursday
spots are maxing 2+ overhead. Surf stays big through the weekend,
with it dropping off Sunday.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo -
1. The surf has picked up this week, starting out without much of
anything and checking in yesterday with nice head high sets. It seems
that the wind gets turned on full blast at 12 noon, though, so the
afternoon high tides are tough to surf.
2. Thank goodness as the tide moves later in the afternoon we should
have better sessions as the wind mellows in the evening. We have the
waves right now, we just need the wind to let them get to us.
3. I think the weekend surf will be good most places around here.
Avellanas, as always, where you can chose your break according to the
tide is a good idea right now so you can work around the wind. By
Sunday maybe he rivermouth in Tamarindo. Right now, give Langosta a
try.
Langosta.
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The swell never quit this week and has been holding overhead and
improving in quality every day. Yesterday was epic in the 1-2 foot
overhead range. The wind has been offshore all day with the minimum
tide changes between the moons resulting in long high tide windows.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The high tide is moving into the afternoon and getting fuller. If the
swell holds and the wind stays off shore all day, we should continue
to have good surf conditions.

TIDES *for Friday - add 50 min. each day after
High Tide - 8.59 ft. at 7:02 AM
Low Tide - .07 ft. at 1:05 PM
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - The Nicoya peninsula will see a slight build of wave height
from a near shore system by Monday, putting surf in the head high
range. That should last through Tuesday, but afterward nothing is
coming from any direction, so surf drops down to waist to chest high
through the weekend, with maybe a long reaching head head set. Early
morning glassy sessions will be the call, as well as a sunset surf.
Caribbean - The right coast is getting barraged by a NNE swell
pushing in overhead surf for the coast, with some bigger 2 foot
overhead sets. Expect this to last through Sunday, dropping a foot
for the beginning of next week. Another E swell is expected to arrive
by next Thursday from the NEer off the U.S. coast this week.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The consistent, and overhead, solid swell we enjoyed all last week
petered down to head high on the better sets on Thurs. Although the
very westerly swell direction was a little squared off with a lot of
unmakable waves, there were also many good ones. The clear water and
off shore sculpted conditions were inviting. The afternoon sessions
for the first part on the week were mini Puerto Escondito with our
decent sand conditions. On Wednesday and Thursday the daybreak
sessions were clean, but the wind came on shore for the afternoon
session warming the water temperature while slopping up the waves. It
then died by evening allowing rideable, messy surf.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) -Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The tides are right for the morning and should be small, but
rideable, at least until the swell hits. The evening window will
start to fade by the end of the weekend. The crowds have been thick,
but since the entire bay is lighting up, everyone is pretty spread
out.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are peaks from Ventanas
to the north all the way to Tamarindo to the south. Look for an
uncrowded spot.
** From Diana, the best surf instructor in Tamarindo (according to
the editor):
Waves are super-small right now--generally waist high. The dawn and
dusk high tides have light off-shore winds which pick up to a gale
during the day.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
Get your longboards! We could see a pick-up on Saturday from a north
swell, but north swells plus north winds make for formidable currents
so pay attention.
Ojo!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
The Tamarindo River mouth should be good if we get the push from the
north. Otherwise I vote for Avellanas with it's varios options like
the beach break, the estuary or the point to the north. You should be
able to find something there.
** From Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
Surf has been small in the Tamarindo area, a bit bigger outside of
town at the south-facing beaches. Ollie's Point has been INSANE of
course, the swell that hit Tuesday was basically due south and
perfect conditions
for the point...
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) -
I'd hate to jinx it, but we're expecting a solid northwest swell to
hit on Saturday Jan 25. This swell is going to last a couple of days,
drop a bit but continue to push as the storm thats pushing it is
still very strong and constantly swinging further and further south
(and further and further into our swell window)
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -
Witch's Rock will be the spot to surf on this swell. Perfect offshore
winds have been blowing daily. If you can't get on the boat, check
out the Tamarindo Rivermouth as its a no-brainer on any NWswell
lately.

Low Tide - .77 ft. at 8:09 AM
High Tide - 7.75 ft. at 2:27 PM
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Surf stays fun for the weekend, with waves chest to head
high from the NW. The next swell springs up from the NW on Monday,
pushing surf up to 1 foot overhead, with some infrequent bigger sets.
The size drops for Tuesday a foot, but should be consistently head
high + for both the northern and southern coasts throughout the week,
with a bump from a SSW that is sneaking up from Peru. The first pulse
from another SW should arrive a week from Monday.
Caribbean - Salsa will be smaller for this weekend's contest, waves
from head high to a foot overhead, maybe a two foot overhead set.
Sunday will be smaller, with surf chest to head high at the
beachbreaks. The next swell arrives Monday afternoon, from the ESE
and a surge from the NE bringing surf back up to 2-4' overhead by
Tuesday and Wednesday. This swell will slowly fade to head high surf
for next weekend.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
This fairly boxed off north swell has been hitting our area squarely
all week and diminishing from double overhead last week end to head
high on the sets on Thurs. Even with the smaller size, everyone is
enjoying the occasional perfection and deep tube rides are not
uncommon. The sand in Playa Grande is getting better and in the good
category. The off shore wind has been holding all day and backing off
to a feather during the better sessions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The tide will be coming in at the Tamarindo Estero in the morning and
Grande will be high enough around noon for the three quarter push. If
the north swell continues to drop, it will probably turn into mini
barrel riding practice.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

If the northerly swell direction continues, try the Tamarindo end of
the bay for incoming tide and Grande at high and outgoing.

Right now we haven't got much in the way of waves, but we sure have
wind! This week started out with huge waves and very strong south-
pulling currents. Ahorita no tenemos muchas olas pero si tenemos
viento!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The Papagayo off-shores are too strong for mid-day session, but
things should look up for the weekend as the tide moves later into
the afternoon. Expect waist high surf.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
The sandbars we've got at present close out Tamarindo and a lot of
the beach over in Playa Grande when we get any size, so my suggestion
for the weekend is Langosta.
recomiendo Playa Langosta.

Pacific - Strong NW brushing the northern coast with some surf in the
head high to overhead range for Saturday and Sunday. While central
and southern zones stay head high and fun with a weak high tide in
the morning for glassy dawn patrols. Expect the swell to slowly fade
out through the week, with waves waist to chest high for next weekend.
Caribbean - More juice is headed to Salsa Brava, waves there will be
double overhead on the sets Monday, dropping a little by Tuesday
afternoon. The ESE swell pushes in more chest to head surf for the

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Traditionally, a swell comes a few days after the new moon.
Well, a WNW arrives, giving relief in the form of chest to head high
surf, with some overhead sets. Expect some nice barrels early at the
beachbreaks and a fun afternoon session to boot. Swell arrives Sunday
morning and sticks around until next Wednesday. Long range doesn't
look great, dropping swell for next weekend with some residual NW
sending some chest high or smaller surf.
Caribbean - East swell is pushing in surf 1-2 foot overhead on the
sets at the beachbreaks, a little bigger on the reefs. This should
last until Saturday afternoon, and then drop down to head high by
Monday. Tuesday another ENE swell fills in, keeping waves in the
overhead range.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
A hefty West started showing yesterday. Thursday was well over head
and good form in spite of the fluky wind. The sand bars are almost as
good as they get resulting in a lot of quality surf. The crowds are

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
I was out of town until today, so this report is only for Thursday.
There is certainly some swell out there and the rivermouth is a
popular place right now. High tide waves were easy chest high, but
grew in size and speed as the tide dropped. The wind was light
offshore at dawn and continued to pick up speed all morning. Yo
marea, agararon tamano y velocidad. El viento amanecio off shore
liviano y crecio por toda la manana.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The swell will hopefully be around a little longer, and the morning
conditions are perfect. Expect a lot of sun, a lot of wind and waves
all over the place. El swell probablemente estara aqui unos dias mas
y las mananas tienen condiciones perfectas. Espere mucho sol, mucho
viento y olas por todos lados.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
The rivermouth may be crowded, but that's because it's so great. The
beach by the lifeguard stand is good, Pico Pequeno has been great. If
the crowds get to you in Tamarindo, sneak off toward Playa Grande.
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The surf has been running overhead and a half to double overhead here
at the main break. The wind is combing them out in the morning during
the incoming and outgoing tide. Some of the sets are bumpy or squared
off and a few sets are perfect so you have to pick em. The good waves
are obvious and since the swell is coming out of the West and hitting
full force out front, there aren't any scary sneaker sets and
adequate lulls between the sets. The paddle out channels are working
well and I haven't seen many broken boards. On the good sets it could
easily be Puerto Escondido without the fear factor. Yesterday I
watched a five second, stand up, dry tube ride through the hole.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
Everything is lined up for great surf with the morning tides, off
shores, and mellowing, cleaning swell.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -
We've been going down to the Tamarindo River mouth, just three
minutes away, on the Playa Grande service road for low incoming
tides, and everybody along Playa Grande and Tamarindo is reporting
good waves at some tide.
** From Marco at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa -
pies. El viento es sur. Estamo esperando olas mas grandes.

going off. All the Southwest spots are on. Pretty big weekend crowds.

QUEPOS & MANUEL ANTONIO
** From David at Escuela D'Amore in Manuel Antonio -
a comenzar a llover.

AREA REPORTS

** From Diane at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
A north swell came in this week, breaking head high and bigger at the
rivermouth and in front of the lifeguard stand at low tide. The winds
have been viscious off-shore which usually doesn't happen until later
in the summer. Now the swell is diminishing a bit, but midtide at the
rivermouth is still head high.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
Expect a windy weekend! A lot of the swell in the ocean is being held
out of the bay by the wind, but as the tide shifts to sunrise, early
morning should be gorgeous.

lindisimas.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - The nice SW swell that arrived Wednesday will be fading out
by Saturday, leaving surf up in Guanacaste chest high and further
south waist to chest high. No relief is expected Sunday, but by
Monday a NW swell will hit the beaches of the Nicoya peninsula,
pushing surf back up to headhigh with some overhead sets. This won't
be seen in the central Pacific but a few headhigh sneaker sets show
up in the southern zone. NW'er stays on the scene through next
Thursday and further ahead another SW swell will push in head high
surf for next weekend.
Caribbean - Saturday the surf stays knee to waist high but clean.
Then on Monday a ESE arrives with surf chest to head high with the
biggest sets hitting Wednesday. Swell expires Thursday afternoon
leaving waist to chest high surf for next weekend.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
We've had a week of small surf as predicted. Waves in Tamarindo have
ranged from waist to chest, smaller in the beginning of the week.
Each day starts with off-shore winds, but today is the first day that
they've held into the afternoon. Looks like we've got a bit of west
swell coming in that's causing Henry's point and the central area of
the beach to break.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
A swell from the south/southwest is predicted to arrive here on
Friday, winds expected to be off shore, so it could shape up to be a
great surf weekend in Tamarindo.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -El mejor lugar a
It looks like it's could be great anywhere, especially Langosta.
Depending how much west is in the swell, the Tamarindo rivermouth
could be a good spot as well.
** From Carrie and Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
Thursday saw waves at a solid head high with some sets well overhead.
It was offshore throughout the day, making for a long mid-morning to
early afternoon session. Lots of barrels! Playa Grande at it's best!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The swell seems a bit junkier today, Friday, with plenty of size but
a bit more mixed up than yesterday. Who knows, though, as the tide
fills in it could certainly clean up and we could have a repeat of
yesterday. This weekend looks good for Grande as we seem to be locked
into an offshore weather pattern and there's plenty if swell in the
water.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Swells arriving from all directions this week. Surf will be
in the chest high range for the weekend and then slowly increasing up
to 1 foot overhead by Tuesday. Surf stays bigger Wednesday and then
drops slowly back to stomach to chest high for next weekend. Morning
high tides should help the form at the beachbreaks.
Caribbean - The eastern coast looks small for the weekend, maybe some
waist high surf at the beachbreaks. Then on Monday afternoon a slight
increase will be noticeable and by Wednesday surf should be chest
high with some nice sets flowing in from the ESE. It starts dropping
Thursday and is back to waist high by Friday.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diane at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
SIZE AND CONDITIONS:
The waves have been small all week--around waist high in all of
Tamarindo. Last Sunday was a gorgeous blue
summer day with off-shores all day long. The week has been more a mix
of summer and winter with inconsistant winds, patchy rain and blue
skys in between. At the moment we have the wind on shore and a lot of
chop.
desorganizacion.
THIS WEEKEND:
I don't mean to be always predicting gloom and doom, but virtual bouy
reports for us for this weekend have the set waves rolling in at
about waist high. The good news is they should hold up fine in the
predicted off- shore wind. No quiero siempre estar trayendo malas
BEST PLACE TO SURF:
Hmmm. Best TIME to surf will be mid incoming tide as the high tides
are far too high for the lack of swell. I recommend Avellanas and
Playa Grande, especially as what swell we have is coming from the
south.
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
Small and clean with the tides falling in the morning and late
afternoon making for some nice glassy sessions. However, the waves
are pretty small though there is an occasional decent chest high wave
that comes through.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The word is that we may have a new swell coming. That would make for
some fun weekend surf and doublesessions at Grande.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

Tha main peak at Grande as that's really the only place the swell is

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
This has been the first week of crap surf in quite a while. Not much
to report here boss.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) -
As the weather report shows a slight increase this weekend, everyone
is watching the GIANT freaking NW swell off the northwest coast of
the US....dont' know if this is too north to make it here, if it is
Witch's Rock will be off the hook.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -
Playa Grande or Witch's Rock for the high tide, Ollie's Point on the
low. Ollie's Point, by the way, has actually had fun chest-high surf
despite the flat spell thats taken over the rest of the Costa Rican
world. If you can get to Ollie's, you'll have fun.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - West-southwest swell sticks around for the weekend up
north, but down south it stays smaller, in the chest to head high
range. Dawn patrols at point breaks and p.m. sessions at the backyard
beachbreaks are the call. Swells fade out by Monday leaving waist to
chest conditions until a straight South arrives next Wednesday
pushing surf up to chest to head high with maybe a sneaker overhead
set.
Caribbean - No wave-relief for the weekend, but it appears a small
groundswell is setting up for Monday with small surf, waist high,
growing to some chest high sets by next Thursday.

Our waves are small right now but have nice shape when the wind stays
off them. Winds have been shifty, especially since this last part of
the week we've had rain at dawn and throughout the day. With the
westward shift in the swells, the rivermouth has had waves rolling
all over the place--small, but beautiful and everywhere!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

Friday waves recede to head high for next weekend, with the swell
angle coming more from the South.

nice conditions for snorkeling and enjoying the fun activities on the

Through next week, the surf stays smaller (in the chest to head high

offshore up north. Waves stay consistent through next weekend but
nothing magnificant, maybe some nice dawn patrols at your local

The surf has been through a lot of changes this week--it started out

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - South swell arrives Sunday midday with surf one foot

best Monday morning before starting to drop off next Tuesday.
Wednesday it's back in the chest to head high range, but more swell
from the SW pushes it back overhead by Thursday and into the weekend.
Caribbean - A pulse from a nearby tropical system hitting Nicaragua
gives the coast surf in the waist to chest range, but only stays
until Sunday. Afterwards, another four days of knee to waist fun
clean surf. Enjoy Carnival in Limon!!!

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
With the extremely high new moon tides this week and little swell,
Tamarindo hasn't had much more than a little shore break. There have
been fun little mid tide longboard waves in the late mornings, but in
the afternoons super high tides and onshore winds have been the
usual. It's been a gorgeous week weather- wise.
mareas altisimas y vientos onshore. Pero ha sido una semana de tiempo
lindisimo.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
Keep Sunday morning open, because it looks like we have waves on the
way starting then. The tide ought to be just right to run out and
catch a few while the morning sun shines and the morning off shores
blow!
offshores.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
As these predicted waves will be coming from the south/southwest,
Langosta should be the best place in town to cath them, Playa Grande
if you can travel. Como las olas pronosticadas vienen del
sur/suroeste, Langosta sera el mejor lugar agarrarlas, o Playa Grande
si puedes viajar.
** From Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
Amidst this so-called "rainy season", we in Tamarindo have seen
hardly any rain. Its been sunny, the conditions have been really
clean with offshore winds, some glassy conditions too. The surf in
tamarindo hasn't been much to talk about, small longboard waves,
while Ollie's Point has been absolute FIRING the last three days.
Trips have been staying at Ollies all day long, conditions offshore
with overhead set waves and nobody out...got to love this time of
year.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) -
We are waiting for a due south, planned to hit on Saturday October
12th (happens to be the date of WRSC Tamarindo's next party....hmmmm)
Surf should get 2-3ft overhead plus at Ollie's, we can't tell yet if
the swell is too south to get to Witch's Rock. This swell is going to
hit us in spurts, expect stories of some beaches being waist high,
others being double overhead (Negra, Grande, Ollie's). No ones going
to be here to surf it, either.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -
Ollie's is the only sure bet, then Negra and Grande. Anywhere that
gets a deep south swell (secret spots...)
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS-
WRSC Tamarindo hosting two parties: #1 Sat. Oct. 12th, WRSC Birthday
party for Roach, Luke, and Johan #2 Thur. Oct 31st, WRSC HOLLOWEEN
PARTY. Wear your best costume for added effect, anyone wearing the
generic "surfer" costume will be pointed out and laughed at = no
friends. be creative.

QUEPOS & MANUEL ANTONIO
** From David at Escuela D'Amore in Manuel Antonio -

Pacific - Waves will be less consistent over the weekend, in the
chest high range, with some head high+ sets coming in every 10
minutes with a 14 second period. At the beachbreaks, have the most
fun either for dawn patrol barrels or good shoulders about 2 hours
before high tide. Surf slowly increases a foot by Monday and changes
to more from the south, but nothing huge is coming until next
Saturday from down south of Peru.
Caribbean - No relief in the Caribbean with tropical systems sucking
the juice up north, leaving waves in the knee to waist high range.
Maybe a stomach high set on Monday, but returning to flatness for the
rest of the week. Good diving conditions!!

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
Right now winds are holding off shore through the sunny mornings
we've been having, switching near noon. The head high waves we had
last weekend have backed off to longboarders' waist high peelers.
cintura.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
This is really nothing to complain about, seeing as the sun is
shining and the water is clean. Small waves and beautiful mornings at
low-tide spots while the wind holds.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
I recommend Playa Negra. The waves may not be epic size, but it's a
low tide break that will work before the winds hit. Recomiendo Playa
Negra.
** From Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
The surf has been really fun and uncrowded, we love the "rainy
season". The conditions haven't been epic, but this morning its
offshore and clean surf...
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) -
We should see this same waist-to-chest high surf in Tamarindo, a bit
bigger at Negra and Grande, until Sunday. Sunday will see the start
of a new southwest swell, going to be at least head high and probably
a few feet overhead on the sets.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -
Most spots will see surf, with Witch's and Ollie's getting a couple
more feet higher. Witch's will see the best waves this swell, as the
direction has alot of west in it.

TIDES *for Friday - add 50 min. each day after
High Tide - 8.43 ft. at 6:04 AM
Low Tide - .95 ft. at 12:15 PM
NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - A SSW with a 12-13 sec. period takes the stage this
Saturday, late afternoon - with waves growing from overhead to some 1-
3 foot + overhead sets pegging the main South facing beaches for
Sunday and Monday. Early morning high tides mean lots of water moving
around, so find a nice sandbar on the lower tides if the wind's not
on it. Lots of afternoon storms playing games with the wind, so watch
the weather into next week, as this swell fades out by Monday and by
Tuesday, surf returns a perfect head high and glassy at dawn session.
Next Wednesday through Friday hold the same and another SW arrives
for next weekend, sending overhead surf from down under.
Caribbean - A 9 sec. period NE swell that has given the right coast a
little relief will gasp out by Saturday afternoon, with some leftover
chest to head high sets. By Monday, the surf returns to waist high
and by Wednesday goes back to almost flat.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - One SW swell drops off Sunday afternoon from 1-2 foot
overhead surf down to chest to head high on Monday. Then another
swell fills in from the WSW, hitting the Nicoya peninsula with solid
overhead surf that last all week. Best spot is Ollie's or Nicaruaga
for sure. The direction slowly changes to more from the South by
Friday, but size stays in the overhead range with a few bombers
arriving every 15 minutes. A freak NW pushes in some chest high bumps
on Thursday that will either A-frame the sets out, or double them up.
Overhead surf stays in the forecast through next weekend.
Caribbean - The wave juice is being sucked up by tropical storms in
the Gulf and out past the Bahamas, leaving the beautiful beaches flat
and the water super-clean for other water sports. If you want Gulf
waves, go to Texas!

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
The week started out with some beautiful morning sessions with light
off-shores. By 9 or 10 the wind is going on-shore and continuing
through out the day. Wave size is about waist to shoulder high,
depending where and when go. Right now rain and on-shore winds have
created a lot of disorganization and chop.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
We're expecting to see a considerable jump in wave size this weekend,
but due to the temporal, on-shore winds will be a problem. The sea
should be calmest in the early morning when the tide is low. Estamos
baja.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Check the low tide spots: The Langosta river mouth and the Tamarindo
river mouth.

DOMINICAL & SOUTHERN PACIFIC
** From Greg at the Adventure Education Center in Dominical-
Got back yesterday from surfing Pavones. Waited since Tuesday for a
SW that arrived Thursday afternoon with some headhigh to overhead
peaks. Really fun at the point and at La Esquina. Friday was overhead
and peeling 100 yard rides. Best thing was nobody was there, just us!
Dominical had consistent barrels all week during lower tides.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
SW swell will die off Sunday and be replaced by another more westerly
swell arriving Monday. Backups keep the waves pumping past next
weekend in the overhead range.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Consistent surf in the headhead to overhead range for the
week, waves one to two feet smaller up north of Nosara. Surf will
slowly pick up from the SSW and by Thursday a few 2 foot overhead
sets show up. Bigger sets become more consistent Friday and for the
weekend, we'll see 1 to 3 foot overhead sets from the south. Lots of
rain in the forecast. Next week, surf drops off a little but there's
some leftover juice from another SWer going around the NZ horn.
Caribbean - The remnents of a tropical systems pushes in some nice
waist to chest high waves, lasting until Tuesday, then prepare for
another flat spell.

AREA REPORTS
NICOYA (N)
** From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
The south swell accompanied by a south wind gave us a week of huge
messy waves. Langosta reportedly had the best morning surf at Sapos
with waves well overhead and fairly clean until the winds picked up.
Capitan Suizo was the break of choice at chest to shoulder high with
the south wind being off-shore. The swell is diminishing as the week
progresses.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
North winds are predicted for this weekend, which are better than
south winds for most of Tamarindo. The swell passes and leaves us
with our typical waist to chest surf which will be better the earlier
you get to it.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Playa Grande should be really great in the early mornings with the
incoming tide and the left-over of the swell. In Tamarindo, the
rivermouth should be good near mid-tide and the Langosta rivermouth
near low tide.
marea baja.
* From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
We have been enjoying constant swell between overhead and a half and
double over head for over a week now. Different spots have been
ridable at various tides and wind conditions. The early morning
sessions have been productive the last few mornings. With no real off
shores, patience is the key with an occassional perfect glassy wave.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
The size is right for the main peak over the weekend with early
morning tides.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Out front if it's not too messy and Tamarindo and points south if it
is.
* From Steve at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS & CONDITIONS:
Swell has now dropped after the excitement of the weekend. It's
shoulder high out front this morning, clean but a little
disorganised. Weather is perfect - sunny days and downpours at night.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:
More swell. Should be around 5' for the weekend.
BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA:
Providing it stays clean, Playa Carmen should be good in the morning
around high tide.
