TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)

Full Moon - July 2nd

Low Tide: .50 ft at 8:03 am
High Tide: 9.89 ft at 2:24 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The 2-3 foot overhead swell arrives a day early, hitting
way down south Saturday afternoon and the rest of the coast by Sunday
morning. Two days after a new moon will have huge tide changes for
dawn patrols looking to hit a nice low tide break. The south swell
maxes out Monday and by Wednesday drops back to overhead and cleans
up nice. The only bad part is that is will be another 3-4 days before
the next SW arrives, leaving it chest to head for the next weekend.

Caribbean - It's waist to chest forecasted for the weekend, with
Sunday showing a few bigger sets and Monday getting up to headhigh +
from an East swell. Lasts through Tuesday, but dropping fast
Wednesday with only knee high waves expected to hit next weekend.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Puramar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

This was one of those priceless mornings where I felt like God loves
me and wants me to surf. Wow. I went out three hours before high tide
in Playa Grande and it was just so beautiful. The thing about trying
to tell a surf story is that there really isn't much story apart from
the conditions "the wind direction and velocity, the clarity of the
water, the strength of the current, the shape of the waves as they
hit the sandbars. It was to die for. Who knows what tomorrow will be
like? I expect to be there, however, to find out!! After the morning
session today I gave a private lesson to a 50-something middle school
science teacher from Indiana. He did great, better than I thought he
would. Tomorrow after my morning session I have a long hot day of
bicycle-repair to look forward to. Anyone want a job?

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - AREA WAVE
overhead, off shore, and lots of perfect sets all up and down the
north end of the bay. Mellow crowds on Thurs. and Fri.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Afternoon high tide with some risk of
on shores, but perfect size if the wind cooperates. The very full
tides will make the windows illusive and quick.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

as the quick tides pass through them. The main peaks in front of the
hotel has been outrageous this week.

TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)

Full Moon - July 31st

Low Tide: 1.12 ft at 6:51 am
High Tide: 9.19 ft at 1:15 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The powerful south swell that is pummeling the coast with
surf of 8-13 foot faces Saturday will start to mellow a bit Sunday,
but by Monday it will still be 1-2 foot overhead. Then don't expect a
break, more south swell fills in all week, keeping it 2-3 foot
overhead and a 16 second period Tuesday and Wednesday. Watch for the
strong tide pull from the full moon Saturday.

Caribbean - The beaches stay small all weekend, knee to occasional
waist, and not until Monday late in the day will some bigger sets
appear. Tuesday will have some chest high waves, with the same
through Thursday before dying out for next weekend. Tropical activity
can change this scenario quickly.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Joe Walsh at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Last weekend's swell (July 24/25)
dropped to shoulder/head high by Wednesday. Thursday July 29 we got a
strong spike in the swell and surf jumped to well overhead sets.
Tamarindo/Grande area was a bit walled up, some waves on the local
reefs were VERY good. Today July 30 the swell dropped again, but is
still looking to be shoulder high with bigger sets this afternoon on
the higher tide.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The surf should
slowly drop off Saturday and a bit more on Sunday. Expect waist to
chest high surf in town throughout the weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Any beachbreak as the
surf doesn't have enough juice for the reefs.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Witch's Rock Surf Camp
www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com. WRSC Surf resort beachfront hotel now
open, check the site for info.

TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)

Full Moon - August 15th

High Tide: 9.38 ft at 6:50 am
Low Tide: .67 ft at 1:00 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - This weekend sees a strong south swell dissipate slowly,
from 2-4 foot overhead Saturday back down to 1-3 Sunday, overhead
high Monday, and head high at best Tuesday morning. By the afternoon,
another South swell brings some 17 second period sets, coming in a
foot overhead. Wednesday and Thursday see the same, before leaving
chest high conditions until Sunday. On 8/15, the long waited for 2
foot overhead sets return from a third South swell that had been
brewing in Chile. Will last through the weekend, 1-3 foot overhead.
Remember that beaches which don't get south swells too well, like
Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio, will be a lot smaller.

Caribbean - There's a tropical disturbance drifting into the
Caribbwean Sea and will send some East swell by Sunday afternoon,
chest high with a few head high sets. Monday and Tuesday are a foot
bigger, with potential for more juice if the storm develops.
Wednesday the swells peaks before dying fast by Thursday afternoon.
Mucha lluvia tambien.

Full Moon - August 15th

Low Tide: 2.5 ft at 6:55 am
High Tide: 7.73 ft at 1:11 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The SSW swell is being blocked in part by the Galapagos, so
it's bigger farther south, much bigger. It will be 3-5 overhead this
weekend and Monday around Dominical, well overhead in Hermosa, but
smaller once you get to Nosara and North, headhigh with a few
overhead sets that sneak past the islands. Swell stays in the picture
until Wednesday evening, then dropping a foot each day through
Saturday. No major swells popping up for the next ten days after.

Caribbean - Waves chest to shoulder high are keeping the weekend
goers happy. It won't last, and by Monday a.m. it will only be chest
max. Tuesday afternoon shows some long period T.S. Earl swell, which
fills in Wednesday to overhead, Thursday it peaks and by Friday it's
back down to head high, with another tropical system on its way.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

Right now the wind has been going on shore consistantly sometime near
mid-day. Waves in Tamarindo are 2-3 feet. Ahora el viento empieza a
soplar on-shore mas or menos al medio dia. Las olas en Tamarindo
estan de 2-3 pies.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): A south swell is supposed to come in
over the weekend and light the place up. That should make for nice
evening sessions with the late afternoon tides.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Langosta is the best on a
south swell provided it doesn't get too much south wind along with
it.

** From the Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

Small, but some (you have to pick'em)nice waves for this time of the
year. Off shore in the morning with an occasional overhead set.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Risky with the high tide moving into
the afternoon, but look for rain and the Accompanying off shores.
Don't surf in the lightning!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Chicken Head Rock and in front
of the hotel.

** From Joe from Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The surf this week had been WEAK,
the only good news is that outside of town the south pulses have
brought surf up to the shoulder high plus range....also some nice
offshores on Monday and today (Friday)

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - It looks as if the
swell has started to slooooowly turn itself around. Saturday should
show a definite increase, and through the night into Sunday surf
should jump to the overhead to "a few feet" overhead at most spots.
This is going to be one of the bigger swells we've seen in a while.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - With too much swell
lately, its hard to tell what the sandbars in town are going to do
with the big swell. If its too big, find a local reef and get surfing!

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- WRSC Surf Resort beachfront hotel now open,

High Tide: 8.64 ft at 5:48 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - For Sunday, surf is overhead to a foot over in the south
and rainy. Headhigh and clean up north. Monday will be stay the same,
but by late in the day the sets disappear. For Tuesday pack up and go
west, all the way to west Australia or the East Indies because they
are the lucky ones with a macker SW hitting dead on. In Costa Rica,
it's going to get small, down to waist to chest by Wednesday in most
spots. Get out the longboard Thursday through next weekend. Some
relief from the straight south will arrive in ten to twelve days, or
a tropical system may provide wave relief.

Caribbean - The rest of the weekend holds waist to chest high surf
for the beaches, a little bigger on the reefs. It gets small by
Monday afternoon, surf waist high at best. Nothing picks up through
the week, unless a wind swell kicks up from a tropical system. A few
chest high sets show up for Saturday, but dies off fast.

Looking at this report from CR and I would like to know if you all
are calling 2 to 4 foot from the front of the wave or back?

We are looking to fly in on Wednesday to the following Thursday.
Some are saying that the surf is going to get small so 2 to 3 from
the
back is still fun for me.

Thanks

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Finally it can be said that next week, the waves will be
better in Florida than Costa Rica. This weekend shows chest high surf
with a bigger set each hour, and slowly builds back to overhead by
Monday. The overhead surf stays good Tuesday, but becomes less
frequent by the evening, and by Wednesday it's back under hiead high.
Then it will drop down to waist to chest for next Saturday up north,
and a foot bigger down south. Nothing big on the horizon, yet....

Caribbean - Nothing on the radar for the right coast, knee high with
a few bigger stomach high sets coming Monday and Tuesday. Then back
to flatness through next weekend. The path of Hurricane Francis may
provide some relief towards next weekend.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo (www.puramar.com)-

Today was a great day in Tamarindo! in general and especially for
surf lessons. The wind stayed light off shore until around noon. For
some reason even when the tide was going out and the wind was on
shore, some of the waves held their shape and it was a lot of fun. I
gave a second lesson to 10-year old Abbey from Colorado who was
catching waves and hopping to her feet. Then I gave a lesson to 3
fishermen from South Carolina (who found me through the website).
They were hilarious, did great and couldn't believe they could
actually do it. It looked like it was going to pour this afternoon
but so far it hasn't. I'm looking forward to the sunset which is
always the most spectacular when there are a lot of clouds.

Being a small surge the best thing is to do is go in the mornings

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo (www.puramar.com)-

Hey! So it isn't a lake anymore! A little bit of a swell came in
yesterday kind of from the west, it seems or at least not straight
south like they've been. The waves haven't been that big (waist to
chest) but so nice! The high tide is in the morning right now, so
getting out there at 7 or 8 has been perfect! And the greatest treat
of all is that I can surf right out in front of the shop without
having to battle 400 people!! Wow. I love the rainy season! True
there aren't many lessons and sitting in the shop is unbearably
boring as no o ne comes in, but if it means I can surf I'm not
complaining!! The wind stayed off shore until 10:30 or so and the
waves just kept coming. I actually got kicked around pretty bad by
one set that rolled in right before high tide. Amazing that waves of
that smallish size can actally be heavy enough to yank the board out
of your hands and roll you around. Can't wait till tomorrow.

** From the Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

This week has been unseasonably good with light offshore winds
throughout the morning hours combing out a nice head high swell.
Today, Friday, is a bit messier but there's still swell in the water
for the takers.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): We still have the morning sessions to
look forward to, before the onshore winds kick in during the late
morning and mid-day.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Avellanas
rivermouth might be worth checking out.

** From Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa (north of Mal Pais) -

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Look like the weather will affect the
waves.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo (www.puramar.com)-

Sorry there's not a lot of good news to report this week. The wind
has been blowing on shore 24 hours a day for the last week and the
ocean is a mess. There's a fair amount of swell--in fact this morning
waves were breaking out in the middle of the bay. The problem is that
it's super-sloppy and dumpy. It's been raining every day in the early
mornings and in the evenings, leaving the days humid and somewhat
sunny.
mucha humididad.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): As the high tide comes around to dawn
there may be hope for some decent early morning sessions this
weekend. That and this wind can't go on forever...

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: If conditons remain the same,
the Capitan Suizo should be the best. It's the most protected and can
work in a south wind.

** From the Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

The waves have been running head high to just over head with
occasional decent shape (unusually good for this time of the year).
The afternoon showers are helping to glass it off. There have been a
few days this week that never cleaned up at all. There was some run
off silt in the water on Thurs., but we haven't been hit
by "chocolate milk" surf yet.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Now that high tide is moving into the
morning hours, conditions should improve. We are not encouraging
people to come out here right now, but you can take your chances with
the light crowds.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The swells are coming straight
in and anywhere in the bay that's smooth is a possibility.

** From Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa (north of Mal Pais) -

We are praying for everybody in Golf of Mexico. We are in a safe zone
here in Santa Teresa. The weather is still sunny almost everybody and
the waves are nice and glassy every morning till 10 am. El tamano
is "chest to he head" to "overhead", parece va a estar bonita playa

It's an early blast of the blues ! 2-4 ft faces and semi mushy with
the big tides , over the berm stuff so I guess we are lucky we don't
have BIG swell , it would probably wash Jaco away! Hermosa was fun if
small today, longboarders heaven ! Contest C.N.S.C. next weekend at
Esterillos Centro. Become a member even if it's just to help out the
local dudes! Pray for surf ! Pura Vida, Chuck!

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Strong SSW swell keeps it 1-2 foot overhead all weekend,
only dropping a foot by Monday and staying overhead all week.
Wednesday will be the smallest at head high, then Thursday sees the
first NW swell of the season grace the Guanacaste coast. Arrives a
day later down south, and keeps it way overhead all next weekend too.

Caribbean - More very, very small surf. However, there is hope on the
horizon. There is a familar pattern that signifies the first NE'ers
to file off the east US coast and swing under the Lesser Antilles.
Look for this swell in nine to ten days - Oct. 19th.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

Heavy rains the last few nights had the ocean chocolate brown for a
few days. Very stormy conditions with wind straight on shore. This is
normal for this time of the year and luckily the system seems to be
passing.
pasando.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): There's enough swell in the ocean to
make some nice surf, but wind and weather conditions aren't letting
it form up.
olas.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: WHEN THE WATER IS CHOCOLATE
BROWN FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T GO IN IT. EAR INFECTIONS ARE THE LEAST OF
WHAT YOU COULD GET! IF YOU WAIT, THE WATER WILL CLEAR UP. IF IT
DOESN'T, IT'S BECAUSE THE WATER TABLE IS STILL TOO HIGH AND YOU DO
NOT WANT THAT %$#! IN YOUR BODY. CUANDO EL AGUA ES EL COLOR DE
CHOCOLATE POR DIOS NO SE META! INFECCIONES DE LOS OIDOS SON LO MENOS
DE LO QUE LE PUEDE PASAR. SE USTED ESPERA, EL MAR SE ACLARARA. SI NO
LO HACE ES PORQUE LA TIERRA ESTA TODAVIA SOBRESATURADA Y USTED NO
QUIERE ESTA %$#^! EN SUCUERPO.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The surf has been quite windy
these last few days. Early morning high tide sessions have been fun,
but onshore winds have made the mid-day and afternoon surfs a bit
bumpy.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - It looks like we'll
see a slight increase in the surf, reaching the shoulder to possible
head high range. There is also a sign of the first NW swell of the
season. Does this mean the offshore winds are going to start soon?
Probably not, but hopefully the wind will at least die down a bit and
let us get some clean surf.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - With the lack of any
true size, local beachbreaks will see the best surf if the winds stay
down. If the winds continue to howl, find a local reef and hope for
some sets.

We have small 2 - 3 ft. waves at beach break... great for learning
and okay for locals and other surfers. Not much of anything at Salsa

at Playa Cocles. Rain is in the forecast for this afternoon, Friday.
Carnival in Limon has its last day tomorrow. Lots of music, dancing,
arts and crafts, clothing, furniture, food, drink, etc. Carnival is
on the beach this year, not in the center of town. Many people say
the beach is a better location.

Pacific - The call is Sunday..a combo NW and SW swell fills in the
gaps at all beachbreaks, 1-2 foot overhead, lots of set waves. Monday
it stays the same size on the sets, which will come farther apart. By
Tuesday afternoon it's back to overhead, and stays that way through
Thursday. For the next weekend it will be only head high at best, and
will stay like that until another NW and SW combo show up on November
11th and be back to 2+ overhead by 11/14.

Caribbean - Waves knee to knee+ all weekend and Monday, but a few
clean waist high peelers show up Wednesday from a distant NE swell.
It is a good sign.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Surf has been fun in the waist to
chest high range, nothing too special except for earlier in the week
on Tuesday afternoon when this slight swell peaked and brought
overhead gems connecting to the rivermouth. The offshore winds look
like they are starting to kick in, we should see an entirely
different rivermouth within a couple of weeks. All of the past rain
has made sandbars perfect and if/when the offshores start to howl
things should be good for months on end.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Swell is to really
start picking up tomorrow (Saturday 30th October), by Monday it
should reach well overhead with much bigger sets at more exposed
spots like Witch's Rock. Its hard to tell what the weather is going
to do, its been clear and offshore for a few days. If that keeps up
we should have a great weekend for fun in the sun.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - With the tides being
low mid-day, and with this increase in swell, Ollie's Point should
definitely be the call if you can make it out there. Expect overhead
perfect rights connecting to the sand, and bring the video camera as
with the low tide during the day you'll have literally hours and
hours of good waves!

Pacific - This weekend calls for headhigh waves with a few overhead
sets every 20 minutes. The size increases a foot Monday and Tuesday,
but only takes place in the northern part of the country. From
Wednesday until next weekend, not a lot of swell showing, so overhead
conditions only at the best spots. Expect strong tidal surges on
11/14 due to the new moon.

Caribbean - Surf will stay in the knee to waist high range all
weekend and into next week. Wednesday will see a foot increase for
the day and there looks to be some NE swell arriving next Saturday
pushing in a few head high sets..

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

Yesterday was a classic two-season day! The morning was like summer
and the rest of the day was like "winter". I had an 8 AM lesson and
it was gorgeous! The sky was bright blue, off-shore winds, the waves
picked up finally (3-5 ft), the sky was swirled with bright white
clouds, the land lush and green. My student paddled out for the first
time (2nd lesson), so I got to catch a few of those waves too - it
was great! Then at about 12 noon as I was sitting in the shop, it
suddenly got dark and started to pour! In fact, it poured so hard
that I put on my raincoat and ran outside to redireact the water AWAY
from the shop door! And it continued to pour/drizzle/pour until I
went to bed at 10:30 and it was still raining. This morning (7:30)
it's overcast but I'm sure the sun will burn through within the hour.
Moral of the story: Don't even bother asking about what the
weather's "usually like" in the first half of November! Every day is
an adventure.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The surf hasn't been too big this
week until yesterday (Thursday) when Tamarindo saw shoulder to head
high surf plus and very clean conditions. Friday morning saw a bit
smaller surf in the chest to shoulder high range, but starting to
close out a small bit. Conditions have been glassy in the morning,
slightly slowing out during the day but ironing out with the
afternoon showers. Overall, there is no better place I'd rather be
than here! Very mellow and fun surf (as always).

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The surf report
doesn't seem to show too much swell on the horizon, probably more of
what we've been getting. Don't expect surf to get much bigger than
chest/shoulder high, with head high plus sets at your best beachbreak
(Witch's Rock being the best bet).

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Any beachbreak that
picks up alot of swell; you'll see me out at the rock
for the next few days hopefully picking off the biggest sets along
this
stretch of coast. Also your secret spot beachbreak that gets swell.

New Moon - November 11th

Low Tide: -.09 ft at 9:08 am
High Tide: 9.14 ft at 3:12 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Chest to headhigh surf with light offshores most of the day
all weekend and into next week. NW swell fills in the Guanacaste
coast on Monday, pushing it a foot overhead through Tuesday, but the
swell fades fast . It leaves chead to head conditions for the whole
coast going into next weekend. Long range looks to be chest high
waves, overhead at the premier spots all next week, too.

Caribbean - Surf starts small for Saturday and Sunday, knee to waist
high peelers and lots of sunshine. Then Monday a few chest high sets
arrive, every half and hour. And by Tuesday the sets become more
frequent. Wednesday afternoon the brunt of a nice NE swells splays
the coast with head high to overhead surf at the reefs, which lasts
thru Thursday. Friday it drops significantly and it's back to waist
high for next weekend. Long term views look really good for more NE
swells.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

Hey Ed! Big thanks to you!! I logged in to write about the surf this
morning and there's my FAQ page! Nice!!! I promise to name my
firstborn child after you, even if it's a girl.

So the trip to Nosara the other day wasn't the greatest. It took us
twice as long to get there as I'd expected because that's what
happens when a city driver (not me!) drives over Costa Rican roads
for the first time. When we got out of the car there were gorgeous
big peaks all up and down the beach, wind light off shore. By the
time we got the boards unstrapped, waxed and ourselves wet up to our
waists, the wind had swung around and was howling on-shore. We
paddled out anyway and caught some big slop which was kind of
exciting just becuase of the size. The waves reminded me of the roads
on the way there I'd take off and half way down the drop, hit a bump
in the wave and go flying off the board. Luckily, Nosara is a gentle
as it is big and I'd come up laughing from those ridiculous-looking
traffic accidents.

For more information about Tamarindo, taking lessons, or renting
boards - check www.puramar.com.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Although the surf hasn't been very
big in town (waist to every once in while a chest size superbomb"),
Witch's Rock has been firing with solid offshore winds and shoulder
high to head high surf. Yesterday (Thursday) I drove in to get some
surf, it was empty and fun. Some advice on the road in the Santa Rosa
Nat Park, DON'T TAKE YOUR RENTAL CAR!!! I towed two 4x4 rentals
yesterday with my truck, the road currently SUCKS even though the
rain has apparently stoped. I advise the boat trip in, plus you get
to surf Ollie's Point if you take the boat. As this rain has ceased,
the offshore winds have taken over. Open beachbreaks have seen the
best surf, the reefs have been too small to really break.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The reports don't
seem to show much change in size, not getting bigger and not getting
smaller. You won't need the 8'0 gun, maybe the longboard or the
thicker shortboard for punchier beachbreaks (Witch's, Grande, further
south)

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Witch's Rock has been
the only spot showing consistent surf daily on the mid to high tides.
Playa Grande and Avellanes have seen some fun waves, Avellanes on the
high tide will have some fun sections along the beach towards the
rivermouth. As I said last week, get out to the rock if you can and
you'll be thanking me. Don't drive your rental car in however. Karma
got in the way yesterday, and I won't tow you out if the surf is
firing!!

vacation of your life? Visit www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com for more info!

stays the same through next weekend. No strong South swells left this
year and the north swells haven't made it all the way under Mexico.

stays smaller through Wednesday. Thursday shows another band of ENE
overhead waves that will stick around through the next weekend.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

At high tide in Tamarindo this week, waves have been waist high.
Winds have been off shore all day and all night, cooling down the
water and cleaning it up. It appears that the rainy season has passed
and summer is here!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell doesn't seem like it's going
to pick up, so expect a small clean weekend. Even if the wind pattern
changes, morning sessions will be in order and should be fine. No

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Avellanas are getting a little more of the pulse than Tamarindo--it's
worth the trip.
For more information about Tamarindo,
taking lessons, or renting boards - check www.puramar.com.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The good news, and this is
actually great news, is that the wind has consistently been howling
offshore all week long. The offshore season (dry season) has
officially begun. The not so great news is the lack of swell this
last week, at least in Tamarindo. Surf really never got above waist
high, although conditions were great for the longboard. Shoulder/head
high surf has been easily found however outside of Tamarindo at
Witch's, Grande, and our favorite beachbreaks down the coast.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Supposedly the
swell should increase dramatically by Saturday, reaching
overhead sets at most beaches. We shall see. Even if it doesn't get
that big in town, there are spots to surf without the crowd and with
these AWESOME offshores.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Your best bet for
waves will be any south facing beach break. Playa Grande has had
waves every day, but you probably didn't fly 4000miles to surf in
socal crowds. Witch's Rock, especially Sailboats, has been just as
good/if not better than in front of the rock and NOBODY out. Yes, you
have to hike in, or try to drive in (which isn't a good idea), or
take a boat, but you'll have your best surf of the trip guarenteed.

New Moon - December 11th

High Tide: 7.21 ft at 7:39 am
Low Tide: 1.72 ft at 1:36 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf will be small all weekend and all next week. Small as
in waist high, chest to occasional head high only at the best spots
at the right tides, on freak sets. Look for a break a week from
Tuesday, when some southwest swell will push in some headhigh surf -
joining long range ground swell from the NW. Time to check out the
Caribbean.

Caribbean - Not much for the weekend, knee high with a waist high set
once an hour. Then by Monday there will be a few chest high sets,
Tuesday one or two head high sets, and by Wednesday a solid ESE swell
kicks in overhead surf with a few 1-2 foot overhead bombs. Swell
lasts through Friday, before dropping back to chest high Saturday and
smaller Sunday.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

It seems that we're having our normal February Flat Spell now. Once
again, waves at high tide in Tamarindo this week have been up to
waist high; smaller at lower tides. The weather has been gorgeous!
The winds are stiff off-shore and the water has started to cool a
little.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): It's dawn patrol weekend and you'll
need a longboard. The ocean conditions are good for a lot of other
activities due to the calm water: snorkeling, diving, kayaking,
fishing- have a little morning session and then branch out!
buenisimo para muchas otras actividades por el agua calmada;
haga algo nuevo!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Langosta will be the closest
place to surf. Playa Grande is good too but the main peak is sure to
be crowded, so pick a smaller one to have more fun. Langosta sera el
lugar mas cerca para surfear. Playa Grande sera buena pero el pico
principal seguramente tendra mucha gente. Escoja un pico mas pequeno
para divertirse mas. Check www.puramar.com for her frequent updates
of news in Tamarindo.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - There is good news and bad news to
this report. The good news, we've had insane conditions with offshore
winds every day. I mean really really really really good conditions,
just no freaking swell. That would be the bad news, at least for surf
in Tamarindo. There has been shoulder to head high surf at Witch's,
as well as our favorite beach breaks that suck up swell a bit down
the coast.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Besides the San
Diego Chargers beating the Denver Broncos and holding on to first
place, we're not expecting much from the wave gods. The winds should
stay offshore for the next four or five months, so if I get sick of
telling you that it is offshore please understand that here in
Guanacaste the winds howl offshore every day during this time of
year. There is no sign of increasing swell, but the trip to Witch's
will still score you perfect waves.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Witch's Rock.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Yes, the Chargers are in first place. Even
though we're in Costa Rica, doesn't mean we're not football fans. If
you live in Southern California, please go to the game for me and
cheer for the Chargers. They need some love, almost as much as a trip
to the super bowl. www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com for all WRSC info, too.

New Moon - December 11th

Low Tide: -.09 ft at 7:47 am
High Tide: 8.61 ft at 2:03 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The southern coast sees swell first, chest to head
conditions Tuesday afternoon, but not much bigger for the rest of the
week. From Mal Pais north, the swell from the WNW arrives Wednesday
afternoon and by Thursday will show overhead surf. This strengthens
Friday, maxing with 2 foot overhead sets every 20 minutes. Saturday
is a slight dropoff, but continued NW swell keeps it headhigh plus
into the following week.

Caribbean - Small surf Sunday and Monday, barely rideable. But on
Tuesday you'll see knee to waist high surf that preceeds a bigger NE
swell arriving Thursday. By Thur. afternoon chest high sets are
pushing in and Friday will be head high at the best spots which
continues into the weekend.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

From the Puramar.com surflog - 12/9 - Here' s something that I feel
is worth sharing; it's an e-mail I got today, along with my response.
I can't tell you how many people write me in this tone of voice or
come into my shop almost looking for an apology if the conditions
aren't the ones in Endless Summer II. I find it amusing. I can do a
lot of things but I can't make waves or predict the future. I also
feel a great amount of genuine sympathy for you folks who plan a surf
trip and then find no surf! I would hate that. I sympathize. I would
be disgusted too. So here is the e-mail:
***email***
Hello, I'm visiting CR for the first time. I've been seeing a bit of
a flat spell(1-2ft) for the north pacific. Doe's it usually last
long? I'm planning on surfing Dec 21-26th, and a flat spell would be
really upsetting. Especially if I found out that the surf from my
home break (Miami,FL) was larger. (no name)
***Response***
Hi, Flat spells are upsetting, I agree. I can't remember one that
lasted this long at this time of year, so all I can say is that the
longer it lasts, the closer we MUST be getting to the end of it. If
you surf, you must know that Mother Nature has a mind of her own,
that's why we love her so much and why she sometimes drives us crazy
just like all the other people we love. Believe me - I hope we have
waves during your visit just as much as you do. If not, I can point
you south to where you can find some. Pura vida, Diana

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

We are enjoying a very fun mini swell with a westerly direction.
Perfect waist to shoulder peelers and light crowds. The wind has been
changing early so the lower tides are the call.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The tides are moving into the afternoon
and high tide is a little fuller each day lowering the probability
for great surf without a strong swell.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are little waves
everywhere in the bay including Tamarindo.

Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The surf has continued to stay in
the waist high range, with heavy offshore winds almost 100% of the
time. With a bit more swell we'd have epic conditions in Tamarindo
Bay. Surf at more exposed beachbreaks has reached shoulder to head-
igh with slight overhead "creeper sets" coming through. Yesterday
(Friday December 10) Witch's Rock was the best I've seen of anywhere
this last week, with the Sailboats sandbar seeing great conditions
despite the lack of swell.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The swell models
are predicting a slight increase in swell with a late season south,
hopefully reaching us by Tuesday. For the weekend, however, we don't
expect much change...as usual, .if you live here then you probably
know where to go to find waves.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - After surfing Witch's
yesterday, and having been surfing this entire last week, Witch's
Rock always comes on top. If you can make the trip, get out there and
you won't be bummed. If you're driving in, make sure you know what
you're doing. Late season rain showers on December 6,7 and 8 made the
road near impassible. We will tow you out AFTER we're done surfing,
not before! You'd probably be better out hiking into the park, or
stop by the camp and purchase a boat ticket for the day. If you can't
get out to Witch's, Playa Grande or even Nosara will show you some
fun waves.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- The San Diego Chargers are going to the
playoffs?....I don't want to get ahead of myself, but they are
playing like stars. Oh yeah, and if you're in Costa Rica stop by the
WRSC Bar & Grill for a cold Imperial, happy hour daily 5-8pm and
weekend BBQ! pura vida- joe

Full Moon - December 26th

High Tide: 8.5 ft at 7:37 am
Low Tide: .46 ft at 1:38 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The WNW swell will be fading out slowly, still head high +
Saturday, but the sets disappear Sunday, dropping to chest high.
Monday morning another NW swell sends some punchy overhead sets, but
it does not last more than 24 hours. It will stay chest to head high
for the rest of the week, but look for a few overhead peaks from a
long range NW pumping from Alaska.

Caribbean - Swell drops quickly Sat. , leaving knee high conditions
for the late afternoon and through Monday morning. Then with the
rising tide a NE swell pushes in some chest high sets. By Tuesday
it's head high with overhead sets, this lasting through Wednesday.
Swell fades again Thursday, only waist to chest going into next
weekend.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

It's been head high and good for several days now. Today we enjoyed a
morning and an afternoon session with light offshores and excellent
small waves. The crowd has been fairly light.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): We might get an afternoon session
tomorrow, but its morning sessions after that. The crowds are
expected to grow.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: All the spots are working at
some tide. we are even hearing some whispers about how good Palm
Beach in the center of the bay is right now.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - As expected, the surf picked up on
Tuesday and by Wednesday the swell reached head high plus here in
town. From the camp, rivermouth rights can be currently seen REELING
50yards plus with solid offshore winds most all day every day.
Outside of town, the rivermouth at Avellanes was overhead yesterday.
For those in the know, some offshore reefs have been completely
freaking GOING OFF!!!...oh wait, you don't have a boat? No worries,
we'll get you out there if you like. As if this flat spell couldn't
have gone on any longer, the sandbars are working great and so is the
wind. Tamarindo is all smiles.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The swell models
show that the surf will not drop, but in fact get bigger with another
NW swell on its way by Sunday/Monday timeframe. As you know, NW
swells give the Tamarindo Rivermouth its reputation...look out for
reeling rights from the rock pile in to the camp. It should be pretty
good with this wind.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - I haven't seen Witch's
Rock since last Friday, but with the NW swell direction Sailboats
should be breaking very well. Take the boat or hike in, THE ROAD IS
STILL HORRIBLE. Its bad, and with your crap rental car you will most
definitely get stuck. Locally, check the rivermouths for the best
conditions as the sand bars are working really well at the moment.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Watch the San Diego Chargers dominate
Sunday against the Browns and clinch their first playoff berth since
the 94/95 season. Once you've done this, check
www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com and come see what its all about! Daily 5-
8pm Happy Hour drink specials, BBQ every weekend all weekend long.
Pura Vida from WRSC!

** From Coconut Harry in Playa Guiones (Nosara) -

Oh my goodness or should I say HIS goodness ! What gifts we get and
so frequently too ! No way this wasdone by accident or by some
unplanned event ! Jaco end of my street somwhere between my wave #
50000 and # 60000 right here at the end of my street in "paradise"
and I was awestruck and filled with such a wonderful emotion that NO
DRUG, NO DRINK or any other outside influence could ever give me , it
was not perfect but so close to and not big but so beautiful that it
didn't need to be ! Only a few friends in the water and a sunset that
even by our standards couldn't be beat ! A super clean headhigh wave
comes my way and myself and Shane [a friend from somewhere] are both
there and he's been waiting and so have I but he's deeper and I am on
a super sleek Carton longboard so I defintely could have it and on my
feet earlier but I saw that look on his face and it was {PLEASE} then
backed out of a I am sure was the wave of the evening and an evening
of one wave sets and its almost dark but he looks at me with the new
face of THANKS and gets his wave of the day and I get to see the
smile as he pulls in and its sooo worth it ! Then as I turn around
and look out the back and expecting to wait a bit in comes the
greatest most perfect wave I could have asked for today and it was
solid headhigh uncontested and went all the way to the beach! What a
way to live, surfing + living clean and enjoying the fruits of our
efforts ! W.O.W. surf is Walking on Water ! Come on by and enjoy our
view [and viewpoint] Thanks Chuck and the crew at W.O.W. surf [aka La

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

We've had a very different surf situation every day for almost a week
now. The swell keeps changing direction and the wind keeps surprising
us with its direction and intensity. Every year we get something
similar during this powerful solstice moon. Sometimes it even rains.
Yesterday was perfect in the head high range, although a little
inconsistent. Clear turquoise water, light off shores all day, light
crowd, and powerful fast sets brought us an early Christmas present.
The sand in Playa Grande is reasonably flat and in OK condition to
handle just about any swell.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The high tide is in the afternoon so if
the wind holds and the swell stays strong, Playa Grande will fire.

either side of high tide is workable. Too small for Punta Dominical.

Low Tide: .98 ft at 12:27 pm
High Tide: 7.89 ft at 6:22 am

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Mornings are the call all weekend and early next week.
Swells arrive in the early hours off the northwest coast and before
the stiff offhore winds blow it flat, you have some chest high surf
through Wednesday, a head high set if you're lucky. Then by next
Friday the first SSW sneaks some chest high surf up South America
and fills in with some head high to overhead peaks by next Saturday.
Drops back off after next weekend. Best bet is to hit up some
Caribbean stylee.

Caribbean - Sunday morning calls for overhead surf at the
beachbreaks and the reefs starting to fire. The swell peaks out
Monday and then drops back to chest to head by Tuesday. Wednesday
and Thursday have more chest to head high surf, with bigger sets
every half hour.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

Christmas doesn't seem all that Christmasy when it's hot, but it
comes anyway. We had a nice west/northwest swell as a Christmas
present last week. It's amazing how the waves break bigger and
better at different parts of the beach with the different swell
directions. It stands to reason, of course, but it's just an amazing
thing to watch. The biggest and best waves were over the rocks in
front of "The Circle" and Nougi's–down by the rivermouth they were
much smaller, a little closed out and there were a lot of currents
swirling around.

This is a really busy time of year in Tamarindo! Luca and I have
been giving lessons like crazy and I'm training another friend Alex
to help us. Yesterday I had to borrow a friend's longboard because I
had more students than boards! Starting last night, there's a big
party somewhere every night until the first of the year. I can't
personally hold up through that many parties in a row–I'm saving up
for the 31st.

In the last week, the wind has really picked up. The Papagayo winds
come every year around this time and continue on through March or
April. The Papagayo winds are off-shore gale-like winds that blow at
first in the afternoons, then from morning to evening, then 24/7 in
February and March, then slack off in the same fashion as the rainy
season approaches. Off-shore winds are a good thing, but these are
sometimes overkill. They really cool down the water and make early
morning/late afternoon sessions feel chilly.

We wish everyone a happy holiday, and a safe, happy new year. Hope
to see lots of you surfing here in 2005!

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - AREA WAVE
HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We've
been enjoying a waist to shoulder high, perfect swell with
occasional overhead sets. The light all day off shores and dual
sessions have been fanning everyones enthusiasm in spite of the
holiday crowds rife with clueless beginners.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell has been jumping up and
down, especially in consistency, and conditions are good here if the
swell holds or increases. As long as it is small, and many spots are
flat, don't look for a drop in the crowds. The Bikini show on the
beach is worth a check out between sessions since high tide is both
in the morning and evening. A lot of surfers are sleeping in for the
morning session.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The whole bay is lighting up
with the westerly swells. Try to find some space among all the
surfers.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Well...the surf could definitely
get bigger. In town we've had offshore winds every day, and surf has
reached chest high at best. Outside of town, I've found shoulder to
head high surf with some awesome conditions. Not as big as it can
get, but with these Papagayo winds blowing offshore the conditions
are set up perfectly for the next swell.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The swell models
are showing a late season south swell on the way, starting to show
this Sunday and filling in Monday and Tuesday. For the weekend,
bring the longboard and leave the big wave gun at home. We'll be
lucky to see waist to occasional nipple high surf, but it will be
fun and the water is very nice...

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - If you get out of
town, many spots are seeing great waves. Witch's Rock has been by
far the best, with shoulder to high waves despite the lack of swell.
If you can't make it the rock, find the best beach break that sucks
up swell (I'm sure you know where to go). And, if you don't know
where to go, maybe you should stay at home and cheer for the SD
Chargers.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Sunday was a sad day for San Diego, but we
did show that we're a playoff contender. Expect a solid home game
win by the Chargers, which is the big upcoming event for yours
truly. Also check www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com for great surf trips
throughout the Guanacaste Coast! Pura vida- joe

New Moon - January 10th

Low Tide: .79 ft at 6:26 am
High Tide: 7.67 ft at 12:45 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - A mixto SW/NW swell pushes in overhead surf Sunday and 1-2
foot overhead Monday at the best spots on the Guanacaste coast. Only
a foot smaller down south. Dawn patrols at point breaks are the
call. It drops back to head high Tuesday, losing the SW push, and by
Wednesday is down to chest high. Thursday through Sat. look mellow,
waist to chest and a random head high + set, with no relief until
Sunday morning, when more chest high sets fill in up north.

Caribbean - The powerful East swell bringing 1-2 foot overhead peaks
will continue Monday, but slowly fade off Tuesday down to head high,
Wednesday down to waist to chest, and Thursday to knee to waist.
Then another East swell starts filling in again with a few chest
high sets Friday and more Saturday.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

Yesterday at mid-tide were the first waves we've seen all week.
Tamarindo has been really flat; flat enough that birds can use Pico
Pequeno as an island for napping even at high tide. The wind has
been medium to hard off shore and there isn't a cloud anywhere! Ayer

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Reports say we're supposed to get
a little swell from the north and the south this weekend. No matter
how little, we'll take it!
No importa
lo poquito que sea, sera bienvenido!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Langosta in the mornings will
probably be the best this weekend.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

The surf we are having now is typical for this time of the year with
Playa Grande and Witches getting some surf while everywhere else is
flat. Some of the "locals" who were lucky enough to be here last
year when it seemed to never stop, are somewhat surprised by the
miniature conditions. The small swells are jumping up and down from
just barely ridable to excellent small surf. Yesterday we actually
saw some overhead sets and better form than the preceding days.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
will be bigger and we can spread out some and get away from the main
peak in front of the hotel where all the Tamarindo nomads are
congregating every day. The tides are in the late morning with long
(6 hour) windows and the wind should remain perfect to stiff.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The 20, or so, peaks in the
bay should all work if the new swell has any punch. I picked a time
and peak yesterday with hardly anybody out.

** From Coconut Harry in Playa Guiones (Nosara) -

Buenos Dias from Playa Guiones (Nosara) & Feliz Año! It's chest to
head-high set waves around the higher tides. Winds have been
consistently off-shore for most of the day. We are the authorized
BIC surfboards dealer in Guanacaste - contact me for prices and or
more information. See my website for the link to BIC for board sizes
and specs. Pura Vida! Coconut Harry - www.coconutharrys.com

JACO & HERMOSA

** From Chuck at Chosita del Surf Shop in Jaco

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Slow on waves but better here than a lot of places!
The Corner and close vicinity is the spot, waist to headhigh with
the best at lowest tide, some pretty barrels to be had but you gotta
go FAST! Winds on it by 10:30 but by then your already surfed out!
No big changes that I feel just another "bump" on the way! Get it
early and get it good and you too can be happily surfing! Prayers to
those in Southeast Asia, how blessed we are that this type of
disaster hasn't come our way! Off to the Surf Expo and check out the
new gear for the year! Oh by the way anyone noticed the strange
looking watercraft around town? We have nicknamed them "CHOPSTIX"
some kind of surfboard shape looking personal flotation devices with
NO SOUL made by poor dudes who will never get a chance to understand
what a rush it is to ride a wave to the beach , remember this isn't
mountain biking or snowboarding or even skateboarding, if you don't
surf you cant understand what shaping a surfboard is all about, many
of my friends are laminators and sanders and some of my most revered
friends are shapers! Don't be fooled, support surfing and surfboard
design buy and ride REAL SURFBOARDS! Thanks Chuck and the Crew at La
Chosita and W.O.W. surf! New # for info 643-3844 !

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The set height is now just head
high. Nice peaky sets. But everyone is waiting for tomorrow.
Finally, I think the 3 month calm may be broken. We'll know soon.
Sabemos prontos.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Ah yes, we are
expecting overhead with a little slant from the south. If they
continue to be peaky and the wind stays down, it should be
excellent. However, the high tide is mid-day (the worst for wind)
and it isn't much of a high tide at that (about 7.5 feet). If indeed
the waves are big, they'll likely fall hard.
probable caen duras tambien.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Dominical and
Hermosa. Even though the waves are up a bit, I think they'll not be
big enough to light up the Point.

TIDES *for Saturday
(add 50 min. each day after)

New Moon - January 10th

High Tide: 9.26 ft at 6:21 am
Low Tide: -.42 ft at 12:28 pm

Pacific - Surf is small down south, waist to chest high for Saturday,
growing a foot Sunday and Monday, and seeing some head high surf
Tuesday before it drops back down again to chest high for the rest of
the week. The Nicoya coastline has lucked into some head high surf
arriving Saturday afternoon and becoming more consistent Sunday and
Monday. By Tuesday, surf will be overhead will one or two bigger
sets, and Wednesday afternoon it drop off again, back to chest high.
Thursday through Saturday look small - chest high. But watch for a
big ole NW to arrive sometime next Sunday with more overhead surf for
the following two to three days.

Caribbean - This weekend surf will be chest to head high at the
beachbreaks, a little bigger at the primo spots. Drops off fast
Monday morning, back to waist to occasional chest high surf through
Wednesday morning, and by the afternoon waves from the NE will start
to push in some more head high sets. Thursday is the best day, head
high to overhead with consistent sets, Friday the sets will fall
farther apart and the surf drops again down to chest high.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

There hasn't been much swell in Tamarindo this week, although
Langosta was good at the beginning of the week. Waves have been from
knee to chest (some sets today) high and the wind was actually on
shore today and yesterday.
viento estuvo on shore ayer y hoy.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): The weekend looks small but I don't
expect the on-shore winds to continue. It's a little small to bother
with dawn patrol, but sunset sessions should be beautiful.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
well with this mix of swell direction. The rivermouth at Avellanas at
low tide is probably good too.
tambien.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

The wind has been light on shore for the last few days after a
stunning week of amazing surf. The swell is still waste to shoulder
high.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Since the tides are beginning to be
right in the morning, this weekend could get interesting if the swell
picks up a little bit for both morning and evening sessions.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The bigger the swell the
further we can spread out from the hotel.

** From Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Waves were pretty good throughout
the first few days of the week. By Thursday most of the swell had
left, today (Friday) its looking more and more like an Imperial
afternoon. Wind has been offshore most every day, right now its
kindof switching off and on but its pretty mellow so the surf
(although small) is still pretty fun.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Surf reports seem
to show a slight increase later today through Saturday and into
Sunday. This could be good for the early morning / late afternoon
high tides.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Witch's Rock, or any
beachbreak that sucks up the swell.

Full Moon - January 25th

Low Tide: 1.74 ft at 6:59 am
High Tide: 6.96 ft at 1:15 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The flatness is almost over. Saturday will see the start
of a long period, 14-15 second NW swell that sends in chest to head
surf. Sunday it strengthens to solid head high waves with a few
overhead sets and one or two mackers throughout the rising tides
(mid-afternoon) Swell drops back down to head high Tuesday, but will
remain in the chest to head range with a few lucky overhead sets
until Friday.

Caribbean - Chest high surf early Saturday morning with sets more
infrequent through the afternoon. Sunday looks like some waist high
waves, and Monday morning is quiet, too. By the afternoon a straight
N swell edges the coast with some chest to occasional head high
sets. The sets get more frequent Tuesday, but that's it. Wednesday
it's back to waist high + with no relief until the weekend.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

We are experiencing typically small waves for this time of the year
peppered by occasional perfect head high surf. This week was so
small we could barely surf which is unusual for Playa Grande. Then
again, I remember years like this in the 90's, 80's and 70's. It
seems like about a 7 year cycle.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): As a result of the nearly flat
conditions, the sand is building in beautifully and should be nearly
perfect for the next few swells.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's been a while since I
have seen such flat sand which is perfect for our beach and often
one of the main differences between us and Witches Rock (our sister
break). It's filling in well here on the north end of the bay and I
expect some unusually good conditions for this end of the bay when
the swell finally hits.

** Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The winds have been epic, the
surf has been meager, overall its been fun but small.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - In case you hadn't
heard, we're expecting the biggest swell of the year to hit today,
Friday, January 21. ITs early Friday AM right now and we're off in
about 5min to drive in/surf Witch's Rock. It could be one of those
magical days...

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Witch's Rock, with or
without the swell (hopefully with)

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com for the best
surfing vacation of your life!

** From High Tide Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
Avellanas, Negra y Marbella

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Visite nuestra
olas!!!!!

** Carlos at Roca Bruja Surf Trips at Playa de Coco -

** From Coconut Harry in Playa Guiones (Nosara) -

Hola from Playa Guiones (Nosara), Offshore winds for the last 6 days

JACO & HERMOSA

** From Chuck at Chosita del Surf Shop in Jaco -

WOW ! Pretty small today but that's okay, its been fun for everyone
for weeks and looks like a bit of something showing on the HORIZON!
Weather is fantastic and we have had nice cool evenings in Jaco with
Offshores everynite! Have Claude Codgen here with us from C.C. RIDER
and Sunshine surfboards goofing off and sharing waves with us! What
a cool dude! Biz is good and LIFE IS "PURA VIDA" and of course
SURFING IS WALKING ON WATER !

QUEPOS & MANUEL ANTONIO

DOMINICAL & OSA

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The wave heights at Dominical are
disappointing at best. In all of my time here, I've never seen such
a long stretch of small waves. They are waist high, closed out at
low tide and mushy and choppy at high tide (which is mid-day).

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - I think the
weekend is too soon, but it looks like we might have a head high
swell by Monday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Dominical & Hermosa.
Hermosa.

CARIBBEAN

** From Wendy at the Cashew Hill Lodge in Puerto Viejo -

Things here are very normal. The roads opened up first thing last
Tuesday and it has been sunny since. We had no flooding in our area.
Sixaola and Bribri had some flooding as did an area between here and
Limon. Puerto Viejo de Sirapiqui was inundated, but Puerto Viejo de
Talamanca weathered the storms very well indeed! The surf contest
finished up, with Nino and Gilbert taking first and second places,
respectively. The waves have been good. Not real big, but surfable.
My son is out at Beach Break right now. We are very upset to be
hearing that most people think we are inaccessible and flooded. Not
so at all. Any help you can give us to pass the word along will help
the many empty hotels in our area.
