For those of us in the So.StLouis Corkball League, this is the second
time in three years that we have been touched by the loss of a great
person. Like Don Young, Jack Buck reached thousands upon thousands of
people whom he had never met, but still had an impact on their lives.
I remember as a young child living on Utah between Spring and
Gustine, standing on my Grandmas second story back porch, overlooking
the backyard, pretending I was at Busch Stadium calling the game. I
would switch off between being Harry Carey for an inning, then I
would be Jack Buck. Even though I never had the opportunity to meet
the man, he definatly had an influence on me and my love for the game.
When I was 600 miles away at school, hearing is calls over the radio
made me feel like I was at home.
I have a son who is playing American Legion Baseball. One of his
teamates dad is Bob Costas, another ones' grandfather is Mike Shannon.
Both of them were at the legion game last night. Even though we feel
a loss, I could only imagine their thoughts, since they were personal
friends of the man.
At any rate, I'm sure he's looking down right now and smiling.
God Bless Jack Buck.
Go Redbirds.
