Lou and I and two other Brinckwirth bros. used to play a board game
called Pursue the Pennant, wherein we'd emulate, parody, and even
travesty Jack Buck's voice <<Pendleton hits a ground up the line and
HoJo comes in to field--and he boots the ball and now everybody's
safe!>> You just can't write a line like that without aping Buck's
intonation and phrasing. He was the voice of the Cardinals, and his
presence on our lives could not be understated. When I lived in U
City during the fantastic season of '85, Jack Buck's voice kept me
sane. Doc can tell you what a shitty lot we had in Pershing, and the
Cardinals were one of the few graces we could count on to distract us.
I must've listened to nearly every game on the radio--and when the
cards were on national tv, we'd turn down the volume on the set and
blast KMOX. The banter between Buck and Mike Shannon was priceless.
Anyway, death comes to us all, but what a bummer it came to Jack Buck.
He will be missed.
