Although it drizzled on and off on May 19, the boys of the Players
League couldn't be disuaded from gathering up the equipment and
stocking up on beer for another game. There was some anxiety whether
a game was possible, in light of the whether, but finally even the
sceptics converted so that during a lag in the first game, when Jack
uncharacteristically warned of time constraints, the Kyd retorted,
"Don't fret: I have faith in the crack!"
This time, the players were Scooter, Chente, and Hops vs. Jack. Lou,
and the Kyd with newly dubbed Smokey Joe as DH.
The first game saw Hops Hansen outduel Clowny Jack 3-1. Hops went 6
for 6 including a home-run, and Scott hit his league-leading 7th
homer. Jack got the only run off Mark with a homer, spoiling an
otherwise pitching performance, all the more remarkable considering
the hamstring injury Hops sustained during the last corkball outing.
The second game saw Scooter cruise to a 4-2 victory against Lou. Both
Lou and Jack hit solo shots, but that proved too little as Scooter,
Chente, and Hops proved too much a formiddable line-up. Despite some
strong innings, they scored 4 runs early enough to hold the lead for
Scooter. The Kyd pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief.
All in all, a fine Sunday in the field.
