Bobby Brinckwirth is in town for possibly his last West Coast
corkball. He is moving to greater DC, Maryland to be more specific,
to manage a Rock Bottom there. We start play in like two hours.
First, though, a brief update about last week. Two games were played.
In game 1, Vince walked the first two batters and said "I don't have
it today" or something like that. This was better than Vic, who tore
up his shoulder during warmups and turned the ball over to Louis. John
took over and pitched better than his 8-2 loss to Louis would
indicate. The hitters were very patient on balls just outside the
zone, not allowing John to Tom Glavine his way into a humongous zone.
The old walk and home run combination. In game 2, newcomer Mark
defeated Scott in a thrilling come-from-behind win for his first win
and Scott's first loss. The turning point came with Mark's team
trailing 2-1 in the fifth, when Vic finally got a homer off of Scott,
a 3-run shot, to make it 4-2. Mark tacked on an insurance 2-runner in
the 7th. Vince and Louis hit solo shots early off of Mark, and Scott
gor some satisfaction at least with a 9th inning solo shot off of
Mark. Final:6-3. In the first game, Vic, Scott, and Vince homered
once and Mark homered twice. There has been more offense this year
than ever before. Everyone of the regulars is hitting over .200, Mark
trails Vic in the batting race, .370 to .367, and the homerun race has
Vic, Scott, and Mark tied with 5, Louis with 4, Vince with 3, and Nate
has 2 in just 4 games played. All these guys should hit 20 this year
unless they leave town or get hurt. John and Chris "the Kyd" both had
late power surges last year and Paul is making better contact as he
adjusts to the skinny bat, the tipout and the other adjustments to
cork/fuzz. Stay tuned for more news at 11.
