This year's opening day was a great day, though less spectacular than
the previous year's. Last year's featured two no-hitters, one by
Nate Train and one by Mark "Scuffy" McCabe, about a dozen players,
and several fans. This year the fandom was restricted to Don and
Casual, though we had enough players and time to get in two games.
In game 1, Paul Fernandes, Vic and Louis matched up against Scott,
Vince, and John, with Kyd Haskett the DH. Paul picked up where he
left off last year, making batters tip out or hit weak popups or
grounders, en route to yet another shutout. The walk and homerun
combo hurt John, as Louis went deep after a walk to Vic and then
later Vic homered twice. Final score: 5-0. In game 2, Kyd played on
Louis and Vic's team. Both Scott and Vic were very sharp and the
wind was blowing in (which was a factor on a towering drive that
stayed in the park off the bat of Louis). Louis and John both caught
very well (no second chances for the hitters). End result: after 12
innings, a 0-0 tie. Each team had a runner get as far as second one
time. Tough pitching. Week two next Sunday. Stay tuned.
