Subject: Cork League Event 3 Currabinney on November 22
Event 3 of the Cork Leage will be held at Currabinney on Sunday November 22.
The event will be signposted from the Carrigaline - Ringaskiddy Road.
As usual there will be 4 Courses on offer
Yellow - on the paths 1.9 K 10 Controls
Orange - A bit more technical most controls will be 30 - 50 metres off the
paths, 2.4 k, 12 Controls
Light Green - Short technical course 4.2k 21 Controls
Green - Technical course 6k 25 Controls with a map exchange
We have done a partial resurvey of Currabinney for this event, much of the wood
has opened up and with the clearing of the undergrowth we have mapped a number
of new control sites. Quite a bit of the wood is now clear open run, there
are portions with scattered brambels that do not warrent a map screen but there
are still some areas that are quiet heavily covered. Most of the areas that
wer formerly shown as rough open are now shown with a screen of trees. There
is of course a screen of brambles alongside many paths.
Currabinney is usually thought of as an area fine for a summer path run but of
not much use for anything else. Hopefully this event will change your
perception of the wood. The courses have been planned so that on very many
legs the people running the paths will incur significant distance penaltys - in
many of these legs there will be a perfectly feasable cross country choice with
good fast going underfoot through mixed forest.
Good leg cover is recommended.
Maps will be preprinted and bagged with the control descriptions printed on the
map - there will be no loose control descriptions
The map scale is 1:5000 with 5 metre contour intervals
The event has been jointly palanned and organised by Jim O'Donovan and Robert
O'Connor
Regards
Jim

Hi all,
A quick e-mail with three notices:
********************
1) We are organising a First Aid course for orienteers on the last weekend in
January, i.e. the 30th/31st. The course will be given by Pat Reid, and he will
cover Rescue Emergency Care (REC) Level 2, which is accredited by the Royal
College of Surgeons, Scotland. There are no prerequisites, i.e. you don't have
to have previously done REC1 to attend REC2. The course will take place at a
venue in Cork city.
The course will have special emphasis on scenarios that might arise at
orienteering events, but the First Aid skills you will learn are applicable in
most emergency situations. The course will be subsidised in part by the Irish
Orienteering Association and in part by Cork Orienteering Club. If you are
interested in taking part, e-mail corko@....
********************
2) The Irish Orienteering Association is holding a workshop for
planners/controllers in The Heritage Resort, Killenard, Co. Laois on Saturday
December 5th. The morning session will discuss general planning of orienteering
courses, then in the afternoon the workshop will split into discussing colour
coded courses, and discussing championship events.
The course is suitable for anyone is interested in learning how to plan/control
an orienteering event, and is suitable for both new planners and experienced
planners. Cork-O is strongly encouraging its members to attend this event, and
the cost will be subsidised by the club. So far there are 7 people attending
from Cork-O, so if you are interested in coming along, e-mail
corko@... as soon as possible.
********************
3) New club O-tops and O-bottoms are now available. If you haven't seen the tops
already, there are some examples here:
http://www.finnvangelderen.com/moc2009preselects/ (e.g. image _MG_9999 and other
similar happy-looking people). The bottoms are generic black O-bottoms. Tops are
priced at EUR 30 (EUR 20 for juniors) and bottoms are EUR 25.
Both tops and bottoms will be on sale at the next Cork-O event (Currabinny, Nov
22nd) and at the Kilworth event on December 6th. If you wish to reserve an
O-top/O-bottoms, e-mail corko@....

Best regards,
Rob

The event in Ross Island, Killarney on Sunday next 15th November is
CANCELLED.
This is due to flooding. The level of the lake is very high and many
paths are flooded and parts of the island are water logged. As there is
rain forecast for the remainder of the week we have decided to cancel
the event.
It will be re-scheduled sometime in the Spring of 2010.
Apologies for any inconvenience.

Mary,
The start should be no more than 1km away from any parking location, and
reachable very comfortably in under 15 minutes from the forest entrance.

Munster Orienteering Championships
Final Information Update
Parking
The forest entrance is 1k from the Lady Gregory Pub, which incidentally is
only 3k from the Cahir roundabout. Parking for the event is on a forest
road and we would ask that you cooperate with the marshals to enable us to
accommodate all competitors. Drivers should turn left into the forest at
the end of the approach road. Parking will be spread over 1 mile of this
road and we would ask early arrivals to drive to the end of the designated
parking stretch where we will have people to direct you. Access to the
start is from this road so some competitors may wish to make use of
registration before going to final parking, for this purpose there will be
some temporary parking at the forest entrance.
Registration will be 100 metres down the right hand fork at the wood
entrance and is co-located with the finish. There is strictly no parking
in this area.
Registration
For competitors using hired SI cards these are available at registration,
the numbers have been pre assigned and are already input into the Or. We
also have a quantity of SI cards for sale, ‘as new’ ex rental (no. range
361000 up) are available at 25 Euro while new units are 35 euro each.
For competitors who have claimed student rate entries, refunds will be
available at registration for those who show a valid student card.
Maps
Maps are pre printed on waterproof paper and are A3 size, control
descriptions are printed on the map and are also available at pre start.
Maps are not bagged.
Course Close
Courses will close at 2.45.
Prizegiving
Prizegiving is scheduled for 2.45 at registration.

Escape from the Jazz this Sunday morning (Oct. 25th) and head to Doneraile
Forest Park (R603076) for the Fourth Annual Cliona Callanan Memorial
Orienteering Event. Cliona was an accomplished junior orienteer and a
member of the Irish Junior Orienteering Team. Why not come along with a
picnic for a nice family day out in this historic setting in over 300 acres
of wonderful parkland. All proceeds are in aid of the Cork Children's
Leukaemia Association. You support will be greatly appreciated. There will
be a choice of courses on the day: Long, Medium and Short, suitable for all
the family and start times are between 10a.m. and 1p.m.
Hope to see you there.

Hi all,
The Irish Orienteering Association is organising a day-long workshop on Saturday
December 5th on Planning and Controlling orienteering events (details below).
This workshop would be of interest to current planners/controllers or anyone who
would like to try their hand at planning/controlling in the future.
Cork-O plans to subsidise sending a delegaion to this workshop. There has
already been some interest, so if you would like to go, please e-mail
corko@... as soon as possible.

***********************************************
The IOA will hold a Planning and Controlling Workshop in early December. This
will be the latest component of the IOA's development of planning and
controlling standards for colour and championship events.
The primary purpose of this workshop is to review the present standards as
detailed in the IOA Event Guidelines, and where necessary recommend changes.
Also the Guidelines for the newer disciplines of sprint and middle distance
events will be considered. Prior to the workshop a number of papers on the
various topics will be published on the IOA website, with notification on the
Forum, as a means of aiding the discussion on the day. In addition we have
invited Dave Peel, former Elite Athlete, former GB Elite Manager, and
international planner to attend the workshop. Dave will make presentations on a
number of related topics, including planning for elites, and on the different
planning requirements for sprint, middle, and long distance events.
This workshop should be of particular interest to regular planners and
controllers, and to those involved in colour and championship events to be held
in the near future. It is being subsidised by the Irish Orienteering Association
although a charge of E15 is being made to cover the cost of tea, coffee, and
scones on arrival, and lunch. The Workshop is being held in The Heritage Golf
and Spa Resort, Killenard, Co.Laois (www.theheritagehotel.com) on Saturday 5
December, and will last from 9.00am to 5.00pm, with the light breakfast
available from 8.30am.

We'll meet up at 6.15pm at UCC's 'farm' beside the Dog track in curaheen for
tuesday's jog (20th)
and Thursdays Jog will be in Beaumont park, meet up at silver Key at 6.15pm

Hi folks,
The second event in the Cork League will take place this Sunday (11th October)
in the scenic Glengarra Wood, near Cahir in Co. Tipperary.
The four Cork League courses will be on offer:
Beginners: 2.4km
Just Off the Paths: 3.5km
Short Technical: 5.2km
Long Technical: 7km
Map scale 1:10000, contour interval 5m, with loose control descriptions.
Starts: 11am - 1pm. Courses close at 2.30pm.
Please let us know if you're bringing a group.
DIRECTIONS:
----------
Glengarra is now very accessible from Cork and Dublin, thanks to the M8
motorway. Parking is in the first car park on the right hand side, after you
enter the woods.
----------
* From Cork city, travel north to Fermoy on either the M8 or the R639 (take the
latter if you wish to avoid the toll). Then take the M8 northbound as far as
Junction 12, signposted Mitchelstown/Kilbeheny. Take the R639 through the
villages of Kilbeheny and Skeheenarinky. Glengarra Wood is on the left hand side
of the road, approx. 3km from Skeheenarinky, and 500m after passing under a wide
bridge.
----------
* From Dublin/Waterford, take the M8 southbound and exit at Junction 11,
signposted Kilbeheny/Skeheenarinky. Follow the R639 south, passing Kilcoran
Lodge on your right. Once you pass a turn for Burncourt and the Mitchelstown
Caves on your left, the entrance to the woods is 500m on the right hand side of
the road. (Incidentally, the Mitchelstown Caves are only 3km from Glengarra
Wood, and are well worth a visit after your run!
http://www.mitchelstowncave.com/)
TERRAIN:
----------
A good description of the forest can be found here:
http://www.coillteoutdoors.ie/?id=53&rec_site=116
In addition to these areas of fast forest run, the Short and Long Technical
courses will get a chance to run on the open hillside of Ballyhurrow, featuring
networks of earth walls, drains and gullies, and offering spectacular views of
the Galtees to the north and the Knockmealdowns to the south. The forest terrain
is similar to the terrain at Ballydavid that will be used for the Munster
Orienteering Championships on 1st November (entries for the MOC are still open
at http://www.corko.net/moc/2009/).
Hope to see you there,

1) Helping at an event 2) Joining the Cork-O committee
3) Website design
4) Attending a First Aid course
Hi folks,
Apologies for bombarding you with e-mail today.
This one is for people who would like to get more involved with Cork
Orienteering Club. We're always happy to see new faces at our events, and
occasionally people ask how they can get more involved with the club. It's a
great way to learn more about orienteering, have some fun and meet new
people!
1) Ideally, each event has a planner (makes out the courses), a controller
(experienced orienteer to check the courses) and an organiser (looks after
registration and running of event). Everyone has to start somewhere, so if
you're interested in helping out at one of our events, just e-mail us at
corko@.... Don't worry, you won't be thrown in at the deep end!
2) The committee meets informally roughly once a month, to discuss the
running of the club, as well as organising our larger events such as Munster
Champs or the Shamrock. Being on the committee doesn't mean that you will
get lots of jobs to do! It's always good to get some fresh perspective and
ideas for the club, so if you're interested in coming to a meeting, just
contact us at corko@....
3) We are considering an overhaul of the Cork-O website (www.corko.net), and
are forming a sub-committee for this purpose. If you have experience with
web design, or have suggestions for a new site, your input would be
valuable. If you are interested in joining this sub-committee, please e-mail
corko@....
4) We're hoping to run a REC (Rescue and Emergency Care) First Aid course
for our members sometime in the coming months. First Aid is an important
skill to have both on and off the orienteering course, so if you're
interested, it's important to e-mail corko@... (the course can't
go ahead unless we have the numbers).
Regards and thanks,
Rob

Hi folks,
The second event in the Cork League will take place this Sunday (11th October)
in the scenic Glengarra Wood, near Cahir in Co.
Hope to see you there,
Rob

David,
As described in the terrain paragraph, this is typical Galtee orienteering -
nothing different here, good visibility, good running, plenty tracks, point
features & gullies.
Look at some of our previously mapped areas such as Clonmore North, Glengarra
(CorkO have an event here on Oct. 11th), Ballydrehid & Rossadrehid.

John
