Here's how Corey did against the St. Louis Cardinals the other day, April 20:

5 at bats
no strikeouts

No news on Corey for this game.
The Cubs won 3-1!

Here's how Corey did against the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday, April 21:

3 at bats
1 hit
1 strikeout

From Cubs.com:
The Cubs got a break in the sixth. Neifi Perez was at first, and Corey Patterson hit a grounder that appeared to be a 3-6 double play. But Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was called for interference, and both baserunners were safe. However, Aramis Ramirez then struck out and Jeromy Burnitz flew out.

From Yahoo! sports:
Chicago's best shot came in the sixth when catcher's interference on an apparent inning-ending double-play ball by Corey Patterson put runners on first and second. They moved up on a wild pitch, but Carpenter struck out Aramis Ramirez and retired Jeromy Burnitz on a soft liner to center.

The Cubs lost 4-0:(

Today's game (4/22) against the Pirates was postponed due to rain.

Current stats:
.286, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1 SB

Here's how Corey did against the Cincinnati Reds yesterday, April 18:

5 at bats
1 run
3 hits!
1 home run
1 RBI
no strikeouts

From Cubs.com:
Corey Patterson and Aramis Ramirez hit consecutive home runs to put the Cubs ahead, 2-0. It was the first set of back-to-back homers for the Cubs since Sept. 27.

From Yahoo! sports:
Corey Patterson, Aramis Ramirez and Burnitz also homered off Belisle, who moved into the rotation because Ramon Ortiz is disabled by a strained groin. Thousands of Cubs fans in the stands reveled as Belisle gave up three homers and a double off the wall in a 17-pitch sequence of the first inning. Patterson started it with a two-out homer to right, Ramirez then hit one to left, and Burnitz doubled off the wall in left.
From SI.com:
Wood was staked to a 4-0 lead before even taking the mound as Corey Patterson , Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee hit first-inning homers off Matt Belisle . LaRue then drilled a 3-2 pitch from Chicago reliever Jon Leicester (0-2), who had not appeared in a week, over center fielder Corey Patterson 's head to give Cincinnati a 7-5 lead.

The Cubs lost 7-6:(

Here's how Corey did against the Cincinnati Reds today, April 19:

5 at bats
2 runs
2 hits
1 home run
1 RBI
no strikeouts

From Cubs.com:
Behind seven strong innings from Mark Prior and home runs from Corey Patterson, Michael Barrett and Derrek Lee, the Cubs defeated the Reds, 7-1, before a crowd of 25,373 at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday. Patterson hit a solo home run in the first inning off Reds starting pitcher Brandon Claussen to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

From Yahoo! sports:
Corey Patterson started Chicago's three-homer burst and made two catches against the wall that pulled Mark Prior through an ominous first inning Tuesday night, steadying the Cubs to a 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Ken Griffey Jr. hit a fly ball that Patterson caught with his shoulder shoved into the padding left of the 404-foot marker. It was the closest Griffey has come to a homer all year.

After Sean Casey lined out, Joe Randa hit a drive to the right of the 404-foot marker. Patterson ran it down, lunged at the wall and snared the ball just before slamming hard into the padding. He landed awkwardly on his back and did a backward roll, but held onto the ball.

The crowd of 25,373 gave Patterson an ovation as he ran off the field, and teammates waited in front of the Cubs' dugout to congratulate him on the catch.

Patterson homered in the first, and the Cubs scored three more in the third. Prior led off with a single, Jerry Hairston doubled and Patterson reached on an infield single, loading the bases. Aramis Ramirez's broken-bat single to center drove in two runs, and Patterson continued home when Griffey's short-hop throw to Randa at third bounced away for an error.

From SI.com:

After Corey Patterson staked Prior to a 1-0 lead with his third home run in the top of the first inning, Ramirez made it 3-0 with a two-run single two innings later. A throwing error by center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. on Ramirez's base hit enabled Patterson to score the fourth run of the game.

Whew, a lot of Corey news! The Cubs won 7-1!
(How come I always miss Corey's home runs?!)

Current stats:

Some notes on Corey:

Notes: Patterson extends hit streak

CHICAGO -- Corey Patterson's motto this year is, "Be prepared."

The Chicago Cubs center fielder has taken that approach to the plate, and it's paid off. He has a hit in every one of the nine games so far and is batting .310 (13-for-42) in that stretch. New hitting coach Gene Clines has helped Patterson in the process.

"I think it's just how I prepare myself and get ready for every game," Patterson said of his approach. "I think your preparation is a key, really. That's what I focus on is how I prepare for the game. Whatever happens, happens.

"I try not to base my success on how I do in the game," he said, "but make sure I focus and prepare myself well. If I do that, I know the results will show in the game."

Patterson played both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against San Diego. He led off in the opener and was inserted into the No. 3 spot in the second game, going 2-for-9. He hit his first home run in the opener.

"Any time you talk to a player who has a hitting streak, it's definitely pretty nice," Patterson said. "It's just a payoff from what they're working on with early work and their focus and concentration."

The longest season-opening streak for a Cubs player is Vance Law's 16-game streak, which started the 1988 season.

Notes: Patterson opts for shin guard

Fashion do's: Corey Patterson will be wearing a new accessory for the rest of the season. The Cubs center fielder has decided enough is enough as far as foul balls go and he's now wearing a shin guard on his right leg.

"It was my idea," Patterson said Friday. "Even last year, a couple times I [fouled a ball off my leg] in Spring Training. I got tired of it. I said, 'It's getting out of hand.' I'll wear it as a precautionary measure for the course of the year."

Patterson doesn't think the device will slow him down at all.

"You get used to it," he said.

"He didn't talk to me about it -- that ball talked to his shin," Baker said. "That's all the talking he needed to hear."

Patterson was not in the lineup Friday against Pittsburgh left-hander Oliver Perez, so his nine-game hitting streak is on hold.

"Dusty's real good at knowing when to give guys a day off," Patterson said. "I really don't think it's good to have players play every single game. You have to have some days off. You want to be there at the end feeling good and ready to go."

It's not just coincidence that Patterson has a hit in every game so far.

"That's a goal of mine -- every day, get that one," he said. "If they don't give me any pitches, take a walk or bunt to get on base. It comes down to swinging at balls in the zone and keeping your head down, you'll make contact."

5 at bats
2 runs
1 hit
1 RBI

Chicago loaded the bases with one out in the second against starter Brian Lawrence (0-2) on a single by Prior, a hit batter and an infield single by Neifi Perez. Corey Patterson hit an RBI single, Lee hit a sacrifice fly, another run scored on a wild pitch, and Jeromy Burnitz added an RBI single to put the Cubs ahead, 7-0.

Patterson extended his hitting streak to nine games. He batted third in the second game for the first time since July 16, and was the leadoff man in the opener, when he hit his first home run. Patterson is 13-for-42 during his streak.

"Any time you talk to a player who has a hitting streak, it's definitely pretty nice," Patterson said. "It's just a payoff from what they're working on with early work and their focus and concentration."

From Yahoo! sports:

Prior also started the four-run second with a single up the middle, scoring off Corey Patterson's RBI single. Patterson has a nine-game hitting streak, the first for the Cubs at the start of the season since Brian McRae in 1996.

From SI.com:

Corey Patterson and Jeromy Burnitz both added RBI singles for Chicago. Patterson's second-inning single gave him a nine-game hitting streak.

"When you have a hitting streak it shows that what you are working on is good," Patterson said. "For me it's been focus and concentration."

Here's how Corey did against the Pittsburgh Pirates the other day, April 15:

1 at bat
1 strikeout

From Yahoo! sports:

With the game tied, 3-3, in the Chicago seventh against Salomon Torres (1-1), pinch-hitter Mike Fontenot walked and advanced on Corey Patterson's sacrifice, which Baker called a "perfect bunt."

Ramirez erased Pittsburgh's lead in the Chicago third. Patterson singled, and one out later Nomar Garciaparra walked to set up Ramirez's blast and take a 3-1 lead.

From Yahoo! sports:

After Corey Patterson sacrificed, Perez doubled to left to score Fontenot and chase Wells, who remained winless at home since the 2004 season opener. Ramirez's homer came in the third after Patterson singled and Nomar Garciaparra walked with two outs.

Here's how Corey did against the Pittsburgh Pirates today, April 17:

5 at bats
1 run
2 strikeouts

From Cubs.com:
Garciaparra's single helped in the eighth, but the shortstop was happier about a sacrifice fly in the sixth that drove in Corey Patterson. In the sixth, Patterson reached second on a fielding error by first baseman Craig Wilson, who couldn't get a glove on Mark Redman's throw. Patterson advanced on a sacrifice by Hairston, and scored on Garciaparra's sacrifice fly to tie the game.

5 at bats
2 runs
3 hits
2 RBI's
1 walk
1 strikeout

From Cubs.com:
This spring, Baker talked about how the team may need to "create" runs. The Cubs did just that in the first when Corey Patterson singled to open the game, advanced on a wild pitch by Javier Vazquez, and reached third on Todd Walker's flyout to center, before scoring on Nomar Garciaparra's groundout. With one out in the Chicago second, Zambrano doubled, and scored on Patterson's single.

Corey Patterson , Todd Walker and Jeromy Burnitz each added three hits for the Cubs, who scored in seven of the nine innings.
Corey really had an awesome game. I was so happy on my way home from work listening to the game on the radio when I heard that he had a solid single to start the game off. It just got better from there, when I actually got home and watched the game. Here's hoping that this is just the beginning of World Series season! The Cubs won 16-6!

I got my Vine Line yesterday...Corey is on the cover! (along with Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano, and Aramis Ramirez). The best part is that he is the centerfold this month...finally!
Here's what they say about him in an article:

ALL TOGETHER NOW
For the 2005 Chicago Cubs, 25 leaders equal one team
by Owen Perkins

(excerpt)

LEADING OFF

There are vocal leaders, and there are leaders who lead by example. Then there are those who lead by leading off. When it comes to setting the tone on a daily basis, Baker has turned to Corey Patterson to strike a first impression with the opposition and put the Cubs' best face forward.

"It's definitely important for a lead-off hitter to set the tone for the team," Patterson acknowledged. "I guess I did a good job last year with it. It's a tough position, but I know I'm capable of doing that. I'm looking forward to it. I'm not going to back down from it. It'll be a challenge."

Patterson, the Cubs' first-round draft pick in 1998, prepared for his leadoff role by structuring everything from his diet and his workout regimen to his plate approach around the role of establishing the Cubs' offensive identity and pace.

"You have to know when to push the gas and when to back off a little bit," Patterson explained. "Sometimes more is not better. You have to learn how to pace yourself."

Patterson felt the team was fully cognizant of its various responsibilities and expectations in the dugout each day.

"We all know our roles," Patterson said. "We all know what we can and can't do, which is important. If you get a bunch of individuals who all know what their roles are, they're going to play better, collectively."

Here's how Corey did in the game on Thursday:
From SI.com:
Corey Patterson and Nomar Garciaparra each collected two hits and an RBI for Chicago.

From Cubs.com:

Leadoff man: The Cubs have flip-flopped Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston in the top spots in the batting order this spring. On Thursday, Patterson batted leadoff followed by Hairston.

"I want to see the combination of the two," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "Jerry's probably a better hit-and-run man, and makes more contact than Corey. We're still experimenting for when we have to do something during the season."

With two out in the third inning against Oakland, Patterson singled and stole second during Hairston's at-bat. Hairston then singled and drove in Patterson.

"I just went," Patterson said about his stolen base. "If we were in that situation in a game, and I get on and Jerry sees some fastballs or whatever, I know I can steal some bases, so he should go ahead and swing. Don't wait on me. First and third, hit and run, we can do a lot of things which I think is good for this team."

Does Patterson have a preference where he bats?

"That's a personal question," he said. "If you're asking me, I'd like to be in the one spot. I've batted everywhere in the lineup. [Leading off] changes your mindset a little bit. You're used to a routine, doing certain things. That's what you want is consistency. That's what every player is looking for."

From cubs.com...

"Chicago Cubs center fielder Corey Patterson had to leave Monday's
game when he was hit on the right knee by a pitch from Texas' Nick
Regilio.

"I think it sounded a lot worse than what it was," Patterson said.
"I'll be OK."

Patterson returned to Mesa, where he was examined by the team's
medical staff, then sent home.

The incident occurred in the second inning. Patterson, 25, fell to the
ground immediately and Cubs manager Dusty Baker rushed to his side.
The center fielder was pulled from the game but able to walk off the
field and into the clubhouse under his own power.

"The ball was running in and I tried to get out of the way from it and
there was no chance," Patterson said. "[Tuesday] might be a little bit
worse. I think overall I'll be OK. It wasn't like a couple years ago."

In July 2003, Patterson suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in
his left knee running to first base. He missed the rest of the season."

Here's a cute little article:

Notes: Pattersons reunite
by Carrie Muskat/MLB.com

MESA, Ariz. -- It looked like a typo. There was "Patterson" leading off for both of the Chicago Cubs' intrasquad teams on Wednesday.

Look closer and one was listed as "Patterson" and another as "C. Patterson." For the first time since they were in high school together, Corey Patterson and his younger brother, Eric, were playing in the same game.

Eric Patterson, an eighth-round draft pick by the Cubs last year, is Corey's younger brother and was called up for the intrasquad game. A second baseman, he made a good first impression by hitting a triple into the gap in left-center past his brother in the first inning.

The two have not played in the same game since Corey was a senior and Eric was a freshman at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga.

"It's been a few years," Eric said. "It'll be fun to get out here and run around with him again."

The brothers, who are rooming together in Arizona, sat near Corey's locker before the game. They don't talk much about baseball off the field.

"Usually when we're off the field, we just hang out, big brother, little brother," Eric said. "There will be things that come up that I'll ask him. For the most part, I'll try to figure out things on my own."

"I told him he has to be himself," Corey said. "What works for me may not work for you. If he has a question, I'll tell him whatever I can but for the most part we haven't gone into detail.

"He's a smart kid and he'll catch on pretty quick," Corey said. "The sooner you can start doing things and get used to it, the better you are."

The brothers are both fast. Who's speedier?

"I don't know," Corey said, laughing. "He can move pretty good."

They won't have a match race.

"I don't want to get embarrassed," said Corey, 25.

Eric, 21, seemed at ease in the big league clubhouse. The minor league players have only been in camp a few days, and he was a little surprised to be called up for Wednesday's game. He's not sure which Cubs minor league team he'll be assigned to. It's all rather new.

"I'm going to pick up things and learn what I can," Eric said. "It's the same game I've been playing since I was five or six years old."

Also, FYI:

Corey is the Cubs' all-time home run leader for the month of March, with two. He hit both on Opening Day in 2003. (read that in the Vine Line that I got today)

There is a pic of Corey in the new Vine Line mag. It's him laying
on his back, with his leg in the air doing a workout at Spring
Training. I haven't had a chance to read the article yet but I
think it's a general article and not just about him.

Hi Elizabeth. UGH! I shouldn't get started about how much I didn't
like being on the computer for 8 1/2 hours yesterday without ever
getting past the waiting area. Then my mother-in-law tried and was
out of the waiting room with purchased tickets in half an hour! So
she got us tix to one game at Wrigley, July 31 against the D'backs.
They are upper deck, and I didn't tell her i'm a bit afraid of
heights but hopefully it won't be too bad.

I also got up this morning and bought tix from the Brewers for
a game with the Cubbies on a Wednesday in June. That will be in
the family section since i'll be taking my son. And we should
have a pretty good view of Corey's play in outfield from there.

Patterson studies leadoff role
By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

Top of the order: Corey Patterson met with Brett Butler this winter
and discussed the philosophy of being a good leadoff hitter. Butler
had a career .377 on-base percentage, including a personal high .413
in 1992 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"All we talked about was keeping things simple and narrowing your
zone up and knowing what you're looking for in certain counts and
certain situations," Patterson said. "It's not really rocket
science -- and sometimes we make it hard. That was it. It was about
focus and concentration and knowing what to do throughout the course
of the season.

"It's a tough position," Patterson said. "At home, you're going to
get up four times a game and on the road probably five. That's a lot
of plate appearances. You've got to take care of yourself and [know]
who to listen to. To me, there aren't a whole lot of great leadoff
hitters in the game. He's one of them. He knows when to push the gas
pedal, when to back off. We had a good conversation and it
definitely helped me."

Patterson has been working with hitting coach Gene Clines on his
approach this spring, and Baker said he was happy with the progress
by the center fielder, who had 16 bunt base hits last season.

"I think I did a good job bunting last year," Patterson said.

We are up to 15 members now! Yay! And thank you for the wallpaper-
it is awesome, even better than the first one you posted.

How did people do getting tickets? I had people on the computer for
me all day yesterday. When I finally got in myself at about 7:30 pm,
my internet froze up, so I had to click out and start all over
again. I finally got back in around 12:30 am, and there was still
high traffic. I ended up getting tickets for three games. After the
third one (at about 1:30 am), I decided I was tired and went to bed.
At that point, I didn't even care where the seats were, just as long
as I got tickets. I got upper deck box seats for two games, and
terrace reserved for others, so I'll be far from Corey, but at least
I'll be there. I am going Jun. 29 vs. Brewers, Jul. 28 vs.
Diamondbacks, and Aug. 9 vs. Reds.

I finally found some free time to create another C-Patt wallpaper for
the upcoming season, which should be an exciting one for Corey and the
Cubs.
Tell me what you all think (I'm still working on my skills when I find
the time).
It's in 1280 x 1024 like the first one.

Carrie Muskat answers a fan question regarding Corey in this weeks
mailbag at cubs.com.

"I'm concerned about Corey Patterson leading off because he is a home
run hitter and we need a man on base in the first inning of the game."
-- Philena P., Bessemer, Ala.

CM: "Patterson's critics seem to forget how he handled the leadoff
role last August when he batted .336 and hit eight homers with 18
RBIs. He spent time this offseason talking to Brett Butler about the
philosophy of being a leadoff hitter, and came to Spring Training
early to work with hitting coach Gene Clines. If Patterson doesn't
make it, it won't be for lack of trying.

Baker initiated the dialogue between Patterson and Butler. "He's not
Brett Butler but at the same time (Patterson) has more power and there
are things he can do that Brett couldn't do," Baker said."

***** My thoughts. How cool that Cory showed up early for Spring
Training. That says alot about his character, and his desire to
improve. Good for him.

This is a question asked of Carrie Muskat, the reporter on Cubs.com. I just thought you'd like to see something with a little quote from him:)

I know the Cubs have very high hopes for Corey Patterson but when will his year come and when will he stop chasing pitches out of the zone? I'm sure Dusty Baker will keep him at the leadoff spot if he stops waving at pitches out of the strike zone. -- Curt H., Atlanta, Ga.

Right now, Patterson is the Cubs' projected leadoff hitter. Patterson has always batted third in the minor leagues and was never asked to do the things a leadoff hitter is asked to do, so the Cubs started from scratch with him. "The more you're in a certain position, the more you get familiar with it," Patterson said. "It'll take some time. I think I'm a pretty quick learner and I'll adjust pretty well."

PATTERSON TO LEAD OFF

Cubs manager Dusty Baker said that outfielder Corey Patterson would
hit leadoff this season. ''As a team we don't have great speed, and
if I can get on base as the leadoff man, I can have a lot of stolen
bases and get in scoring position,'' Patterson told the Chicago Sun-
Times. ''That would be great.''

Views
Patterson logged 245 at-bats as the leadoff man in 2004, and he
hit .261 with 13 homers, 30 RBI, 36 runs, and 18 steals. The problem
is that he managed only 17 walks versus 73 strikeouts. Corey spent
some time with Brett Butler, a former outfielder for the Braves,
Indians, Giants, Dodgers, and Mets. Hopefully some of Butler's
patience and understanding of the leadoff spot rubbed off on
Patterson. If Corey can draw more walks this season, his runs should
increase significantly.

Yes, that was mentioned in the article I posted a few days ago.

"He is projected as the Cubs'leadoff hitter again in 2005."-cubs.com.

I think that's good news and hope he flourishes well in that spot
in the line-up.

I haven't read anything official about this or anything, but I heard
on the news today that at the Cubs convention, Corey was announced
as the lead-off man! So he is continuing in his role he had in
Aug./Sept.

Did anyone go to the Cubs convention? I am so jealous if you did. I
will keep an eye out earlier and pay attention more to when tickets
are going on sale for that for next year. Now we just have to wait
for those regular season tickets to start going on sale!

Woo-hoo! Corey's a millionaire! Not that money matters much to me (hello! I'm a teacher!), but it sure is nice! Here is some info from 2 articles on Corey's new deal:

From Yahoo! sports:

Cubs agree with Farnsworth, Patterson

January 18, 2005

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Cubs agreed to a $12 million, three-year contract Tuesday with catcher Michael Barrett and one-year deals with center fielder Corey Patterson and reliever Kyle Farnsworth.

The Cubs avoided arbitration with all three. Farnsworth got a raise from $1.4 million to $1,975,000. Patterson, who made $480,000 last season, received an increase to $2.8 million.

Patterson, 25, batted .266 last season with career highs in doubles (33), homers (24), RBIs (72) and stolen bases (32) in his first full season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The third overall pick in the 1998 June draft, Patterson broke into the majors in 2000. He has batted .262 with 57 homers, 197 RBIs and 71 stolen bases in 463 games.

From Cubs.com:

01/18/2005 9:47 PM ET
Chicago inks three to new deals
Barrett, Farnsworth, Patterson sign; Williamson, too

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs solidified their catching situation by signing Michael Barrett to a three-year deal and inked Corey Patterson and Kyle Farnsworth to one-year contracts, the team announced on Tuesday.

Barrett's deal will pay him $12 million over the three years, while Patterson agreed to a $2.8 million contract. Farnsworth signed for $1.975 million.

Patterson, 25, coming off a serious knee injury that ended his 2003 season early, hit .266 while establishing career marks in doubles (33), home runs (24), RBIs (72) and stolen bases (32). He is projected as the Cubs' leadoff hitter again in 2005.

"We're glad to get the clearance we got on Todd Hollandsworth, we're excited about Jason Dubois making the club," Hendry said. "We think Corey's going to be better. As for the Sammy [Sosa] situation, if there's [a trade] that makes our ballclub better and he was moved, I'd have to be convinced it would make us better. We'll certainly take the normal Sammy production he always gives us.

"I'm optimistic that we can compete with the club we have now," he said.
