By the way (and I hope you are not getting tired of these frequent messages,
esp. if you can't go today) but the ice rink is up at Battelle-Darby, right
where we will be parking today to go skiing. It has built up, man-made walls and
it's only a foot deep, so very safe. Bring your skates, too, or keep for future
reference. Glenn Beachy

Sunday Feb 10, 2007 Let's keep an eye on the weather but tentatively here's the
plan. (We'll confirm on Saturday and Prairie Oaks Metro Park will be the
alternate option.) Depart Columbus Sunday at about 12:45 pm to go to Deer Creek
State Park, about 40 miles SW near Mt. Sterling. Hiking trails are open for xc
skiing. If the snow conditions are really crappy when we get there, be prepared
for a winter hike instead. From Columbus take 71 south to Rt 56, turn left
(east) to the town of Mt Sterling. Pass Main St. (Rt 62) and take the next
right, Columbus St. (Rt 3). Go about 3 blocks to a fork, go left onto Rt 207. Go
about 4 miles to Yankeetown Pike, turn left. Turn right at the park entrance and
go all the way back to the lodge to park. My cell phone is 614-563-1146. Let me
know if you would like to go so I'll have an idea of how many to expect. If
you'd like to carpool let me know that, too. I live in Clintonville but we could
also pick folks up at Tee Jays on Stringtown Rd
just off 71 in Grove City. Plan to be outdoors about 2 hrs. There are many
restaurants on Stringtown if you'd like to have an early dinner on the way back.
Hope you can make it! gbeachy2000@...

No skiing tonight. There is a chance that we'll get enough to ski at Fred
Beekman park tomorrow evening the 18th. Carmack Rd. on West Campus of OSU is
shaped like the letter L and forms a square with Lane Ave. on the north and
Kenny Rd. on the east. There is a parking lot just to the south of the southwest
corner of the square. Call me a 563-1146 if you want to ski then. Glenn Beachy

There is good cross country skiing available at Fred Beekman Park at West Campus
of OSU. You can do a 2 mile loop around the perimeter of the park, go across
open fields and even do a few downhills at various points. The park is in the SW
corner of Lane and Kenny Rds. Take Carmack Rd South from Lane or West from Woody
Hayes Dr. and follow the signs for parking for the park. OSU Traffic and Parking
is very strict so park according to the signs. The OSU golf course is closed to
skiing while they do construction work so the Jan 17th trip will be at Fred
Beekman Park if there is snow.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING BEGINS AT MALABAR FARM STATE PARK
Lucas, Ohio – As one of many winter activities planned for 2006, Malabar Farm
State Park offers a sport that doesn’t take much time and money to enjoy.
Cross-country skiing lets you go at your own pace, leads you through quiet,
beautiful winter woods, and only requires some snow on the ground.

Over the past couple of winters there has been an increased interest in
cross-country skiing in Northern Ohio. Since 1981 Malabar Farm has offered
cross-country ski trails, workshops, and ski equipment rentals. This year the
Ski Rental Shop will be open beginning, Thursday, December 15th till March 1st,
weather permitting. The Ski Rental Shop hours are Thursday through Sunday from
11:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Cross-country skis, boots, and poles are available for
rent in adult and kid sizes for $5.00 per hour and saucer sleds for $2.00 per
hour. Malabar Farm has over 10 miles of marked ski trails, including beginner
and advanced level. Current ski trail conditions and rental hours will be
featured on our website www.malabarfarm.org or by calling the park office at
419-892-2784. Special groups reservations and discounts are available for 10 or
more skiers per group.

Cross-Country Skier Beginner Workshops are planned for Saturday, January 7th
and 21st, 2006 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon and Sunday, February 5th, 2006 from
1:00 pn-4:00 p.m. The workshop begins with a one-hour classroom and two-hour
outside instruction. The cost is $30.00 per person, which includes equipment
rental., If you bring your own equipment, the cost is $20 per person.
Reservations are required and may be made online at our website
www.malabarfarm.org or by calling the park office at 419-892-2784.

Malabar Farm is located 12 miles southeast of Mansfield, just one mile west of
SR 603 on Pleasant Valley Road. Louis Bromfield, a world-renowned novelist and
conservationist, created the farm in the 1940s as a demonstration farm for
progressive conservation practices. Malabar Farm State Park is the only working
farm in the Ohio State Park system. Programs and special events are offered
year-round. Overnight accommodations are available at the state park campground
and Malabar Farm Hostelling International – call 419-892-2055 for Hostel
reservations. For more information about this or other programs, call the park
office at
419-892-2784 or visit our Website at www.malabarfarm.org.

very informative. We haven't decided if we are going ito Allegany or over to

Hello Lars,
Thanks for keeping in touch. Skiing locally is not looking good right now. I
hope you were able to get out when snow was on the ground briefly. We do have
two trips coming up, Wilderness Lodge to Pennsylvania and Winter Getaway II to
West Virginia. They are on the website. If you like I'll add you to the impromtu
list I am compiling. I will be in Colorado for a two week trip which will
involve some winter camping on skis and another event guiding blind skiers at
Snow Mountain Ranch north of Winter Park, Colorado. I'd be interested to know
about any ski adventures you have planned for this winter. Be well, Glenn

The kids have been out running almost 50 laps on their crosscountry
skis in the back yard this weekend, and Sunday was spent at the
slopes at Snow Trails.

Yes-yes, it is not alpine skiing at all, but I must say, it is a
great place for kids (and adults alike) to learn, practice and hone
their beginner's technique.

So get out there and take advantage of it, and let the others sit
home and complain about the cold.

Blue skies!!!
