AUSTRALIAN runner Cathy Freeman was staying at a salubrious San Francisco
hotel last night before her marriage to Sandy Bodecker.
It is understood the 26-year-old athlete will marry Mr Bodecker at a simple
ceremony in the Californian city early today.
Freeman and Mr Bodecker, 46, a Nike executive, were maintaining a low
profile last night.
Freeman's mother, Cecilia Barber, and sprinting legend Raelene Boyle were
also staying at The Fairmont, built in 1907 and one of San Francisco's
best-known landmarks.
Neither Freeman nor her fiance were answering calls last night.
They had hoped to keep the wedding secret, but it is unclear why they chose
San Francisco.
Mr Bodecker's late father spent much of his life in the hilly city, but Mr
Bodecker lives in Portland, Oregon.
Mr Bodecker met the Australian sprinter two years ago when she became a Nike
client.

>Ngeny Breaks 18-Year-Old Mark For 1,000 Meters
>Updated 2:12 PM ET September 5, 1999, By HOWARD FENDRICH , Associated Press
Writer

>Paced perfectly by countryman David Kiptoo on a sunny afternoon, Ngeny glided
>around the track nestled in majestic mountains northeast of Rome in 2
>minutes, 11.96 seconds.

>That broke former great Sebastian Coe's mark of 2:12.18, set at Oslo, Norway,
>on July 11, 1981 - when Ngeny was 2 years old.

>Ngeny persuaded meet organizers on Thursday to add the rarely contested 1,000
>to the schedule, and he earned a $25,000 bonus by bettering the record.

>In July, Ngeny set the pace as El Guerrouj broke the world record for the
>mile at Rome. Ngeny also pushed the Moroccan to a record for the 1,500 at
>Rome in July 1998. The two also engaged in a thrilling duel in the 1,500 at
>the World Championships, with El Guerrouj taking the gold.

>Kiptoo led Ngeny through the first 400 meters in 49.66, nearly 1.5 seconds
>under Coe's pace, and they were 2 seconds faster than Coe was through 600.
>After Kiptoo dropped out, with 300 meters left, Ngeny slowed somewhat, but a
>powerful finish carried him to the record.

>"I asked Kiptoo to run very fast for the first 400 meters, and when that went
>well, I knew I was on for the world record," said Ngeny, who took a slow
>victory lap, waving to the capacity crowd of nearly 7,000 at Raul Guidobaldi
>Stadium.
