Most track fans will remember Australian George's domination of the event
in the last few years of the 20th century, but may appreciate being
reminded of some of the details.
She came on the world scene of the event in the incredibly competitive year
of 1995, which saw the world record broken no fewer than 15 times. That
record onslaught began with Sun Caiyan's 4.08m (13'4 1/2"), continued with
ten! improvements by the Czech Republic's Daniela Bartova that were
interrupted with one by Andrea Müller of Germany, and concluded with
another by Sun and Emma's first two of a total of 12 world outdoor records.
The second of George's 1995 records was 4.28 meters--the first women's
14-foot vault.
Her dozen world records through 1999 included other significant mileposts
of the first women's 4.50 meter vault, the first 15-footer, and the 4.60
meter mark that was her final world record.
She was never Olympic champion or world champion, because her back injuries
forced withdrawal from competition just before the event was first
contested in the Sydney games of 2000. She will, however, be remembered as
the athlete who brought the event to world prominence and paved the way for
its introduction into the Olympic and world championship programs.
