I've trained in two carrier systems for Sera, one of them to the
instructor level. There was good stuff in them, but I've come to think
that the time could have been better spent getting down to the real
stuff from the start. Although a student will get good training and
skills from the beginning (with work) he won't learn enough to be
Super Bandit before a decent teacher realizes he's a slacker or a bad
person. The secrets are simple, but they won't do someone any good
unless he's already put in the grunt and developed a good silat
foundation; in other words you should have figured out his character
by the time he's getting dangerous.

My teacher starts everyone off with Sera from day one and has ever
since he began teaching it. It's been successful. Even the students
with no previous martial arts background develop at least as quickly
as the ones who went through the JKD/Kali/Thai Boxing thing. Faster
actually. They have less baggage and are better able to accept what
they're being taught. There isn't the period of unlearning that one
goes through even with the carrier systems. But they don't learn
enough in the first year or two to have much to misuse, certainly no
more than if they did Muay Thai or RBSD. If you can't separate the
wheat from the chaff in that time you might not be ready to teach at all.

This is an email from Dr. Bui
Guru Ben
You can find the silat serah curriculum on my website-http://www.kunetao.com/ As far as what Anak Serak has in it you can go to Dr. Andre's site (in my links page)  I never learned Anak Serak so I am not much help there.  I was certified as a guru in 96 so this was some time before Anak Serak came into existance.
As a side note I use the Serah spelling because Serak means  larangitis or some throat condition.  Not only that but Uncle Rudy wanted us to call it that.  My serah is more the Uncle Rudy TerLinden version and not so much the Uncle Maurice influence.  Dr Andre hooked up with uncle Maurice after I left San Jose.  Dr Andre is now Uncle Maurice's lineage holder.  As far as I see it he is also Rudy Ter Linden's top student also.
Hope this clears things up.

Steeve I sent the wrong information !!! I had copied the information and sent the wrong info. my bad! To much going on in my head!

Serak System just like in the other Pentjak Silat Serak systems of
other instructor's it is a test to weed out the bad people and get
the dedicated ones. Through my Guru I was able to go right into the
serak material.

Pentjak Silat Serah requirements

Djurus (Upper body fundumentlas - 1 through 18)
Many applications and concepts are expressed in these Djurus. All
odds Djurus start with Djurus #1, while even Djurus start with Djurus
#2. Last, execute all 18 Djurus on the luru (straight-line). This is
considered the "gold" of the system. The djurus are used to train and
burn the upper body art into the nervous system of the murid.

Entries & Positioning
1) inside line
2) outside line
3) split inside/outside line with upper/lower positioning
4) swithes between upper/lower

Langka Drills (sticky feet/legs)
Using the 4 lower gates (feet) and 4 upper gates entries, there are a
total of 64 (8x8) positions that your body can be in. This disregards
the fact that your feet can also be on those of your opponents. This
drill is done with:
1) Arms holding
2) Slapping hand
3) Against punches and other attacks

Strikes
1) Elbows and shielding(6)
2) Knees (6)
3) Kicks (7)

Langkas (footworks) and Theories
1) Langka Tiga (triangle) | use of Sapu (front sweeps), Paset (back
sweeps), Puder (turn)
2) Langka Umpot (box) | Use of the sliwa position.
3) Langka Lima

Tongon Suchi
Both you and a partner walk Langka Umpot and Lima with clapping
hands, a good forearm/shin conditioning method.

Advanced Foot Patterns
1) Diamond Pattern | develops superior foot positionings during
attacks and defense against hands and weapons
2) Sukurung (platform) | 18 Djurus on many triangles and squares to
develop zoning, 360* awareness. Multiple attacker theories and
strategies.

Pentjak Silat Anak Sera(k)-A Brief History of the Style Now Known as
Anakserak
For the record, the islands of Indonesia, Java in particular have not
been submerged in the last 20 million years. This has allowed for the
development of one of the oldest known societies on the planet that
has an unbroken line of succession. Some of the oldest known fossil
records of early man exist on Java. The indigenous peoples became
very attuned to the natural world around them and over many
centuries, this led to the development of a mystical consciousness
and way of living that fostered a respect and close interaction with
the elemental powers of nature itself. From this beginning the art of
Pentjak Silat was born. It is not really an "art," as the Indonesian
language has no word for art. It is actually more of a form of living
life. Art is not separated from life.

Pentjak Silat is the romanized form of the concept for "stylized
lightning motion." At its roots are the preservation of the self
through the harmonious movements of redirection and deflection of
movement, force and energy. A true master of Pentjak Silat practices
the ability to ward-off attack through the redirection of energy in
and around his/her immediate environment. This takes a few years to
develop and requires the help of a master. An apprentice is usually
brought into the fold and taught as a member of the family. In this
manner the information and training is passed on from generation to
generation. Entire Pentjak Silat societies were formed and from these
societies a culture was developed. It is accepted that the West
Javanese Pentjak Silat style reached a level unsurpassed in the
islands and became the model for other styles to mold themselves
after.

In more recent times a gifted practitioner of West Javanese Pentjak
Silat created a method of training enabling his students to rapidly
advance in the theory and movements of Pentjak Silat. Because of his
raspy voice his students nicknamed him "Pak Serak." "Pak" (respectful
title for an elder) "Serak" (meaning: "one with a raspy voice"). "Pak
Serak."

Pak Serak became widely recognized as a "wise person," a gifted
teacher and healer. He took on two apprentices and educated each one
in the finer points of "Pentjak Silat Pak Serak" until they acquired
mastery. One was named, "Abang Djut." Abang Djut taught two
apprentices, brothers named John and Ernest de Vries who also reached
a level of mastery that satisfied the requirements of the style.
These two, in turn, taught "Pentjak Silat Pak Serak" to their nephew
Maurice de Thouars until he too fulfilled the requirements.

In February of 1999 Maurice de Thouars gave recognition to one of his
students and conferred upon him the designation of full apprentice.
Then in May of 2004 Maurice de Thouars gave Dr. Andre Knust-Graichen
the title of "heir and successor" in Pentjak Silat Pak Serak. Because
of the nature of the practice of Pentjak Silat Dr. Andre was assigned
the task of making the art more available to those interested in
learning this form of Pentjak Silat. Therefore with the approval and
guidance of his teacher, Dr. Andre has formulated a teaching approach
which is called "Anakserak" (anak means child of ). This new approach
would allow those individuals who express a sincere desire to learn
an opportunity to do so. My Guru is certified under Dr. Andre
I have just recieved my Guru Muda certificate in Pentjak Silat
Anakserak from Guru Dr. Conrad Bui of the United States Pentjak Silat
Association

Hi. My name is Martin and I am new to this forum. I had the chance to
be introduce to Mr Goodwin by a good friend of mine, the now regreted
Lenny Howie. I had the privilege to be taught by Mr Goodwin awhile
back. I stop practicing due to life events but I am planning to get
back to tranning under the teaching of Mr Goodwin ( Upon his

As Steeve has posted, I recently learned the instructor material for
the 1st and 2nd level curriculum of this system from Cikgu Omar Hakim.
I am now authorized to present this material to the public. The
lessons in this system that I am offering consists of the the complete
50 module system comprising the Bela Diri.

Bela Diri is the technical basis of the combat system presented for
self defence. It consists of 42 buah (special techniques) which
represent the interlocking elements. These techniques form the core of
the curriculum. In addition there are 6 pukulan buah, i.e. striking
techniques. There is one form and one set of conditioning exercises.
Together this totals 50 modules. I am organizing groups in Ottawa,
Montreal and if I can find someone to help set it up I would like to
organize a group in Boston.

If anyone is interested let me know. The groups will be covering
multiple modules each time they meet. It is projected that the whole
system can be covered in roughly 8-10 seminars. We are looking at
meeting once a month. At the end I will offer a makeup seminar. Other
makeup material will be available in private lessons. The entire
series of seminar courses will be offered for a fixed cost, plus expenses.
