Steeve,
i should point out i mean my silat family, and i must say it was a
good move. all is well here; wife, kids, and dog all say hello.
far as reeder's style, quite a bit to it....
it can play out in different ways, depending on the angles you like.
mostly though, far as i know it, it flanks with tiga to enter and
then 'rolls' in to any and all openings. a multitude of trap hands
and counter or reversal techniques are used to respond to any kind
of 'blockages'.
breaking up balance and structure is a priority, so impacts and
sticky hands are used to takedown asap after entry. it pretty much
goes for the spine all the time, one way or another.
definately a very 'chinese' style with a strong similarity to bagua
tactics, though the forms and postures look like 'traditional' kung
fu more than any kind of bagua that i have seen (not much btw).
and the style may differ depending on what school you go to. some
use tiga, others use a more linear approach, and some specialize in
areas like leg attacks, or strong striking with elbows and fists.
hope that helps,
mike

Hi Steeve, Both Luo and Xu (Hsu) learned from Hong Yixiang. Tang Shou Tao is prepartory practices for Hong's Xingyi. That Xingyi is prepartory practice for our Baguazhang and Taijiquan. Shen Lung IS Tang Shou Tao, just a different organization. Buddy

Hi everybody, I'm really happy to see that group is owned by Guru
Randall Goodwin. I'm practicing kuntao silat under him since fall
2002. I have only good words to say about Mr Goodwin. I'm really proud
and honored to be one of his students, because he's teaching with his
heart and he's sharing his love of the art.
I'm more a practionner than a writer, so I probably won't write a lot
on this group, but I'll read your posts.

This group is for practitioners of Kun Tao (Kung Fu), Pencak Silat
(Indonesian Martial Arts) and others of like mind to exchange ideas
and develop relationships.
I call my personal style Kun Tao Silat Combinato in honor of my late
teacher Earl Alston. His idea was to combine elements of several arts.
Earl wrote on this in 1979. In the future I will post Earl's original
article. Combinato currently refers to a set of four forms, which I
teach in addition to the Kun Tao and Silat that I learned from Uncle
Willem de Thouars. I created these forms to convey specific ideas as
part of a personal process of integration, focused through a lens by
unifying elements of diverse martial arts.
I am a student of Uncle Willem de Thouars that has been continuously
teaching Kuntao Silat since the late seventies. No one except Uncle
has been teaching his style longer. Victor de Thouars was my room mate
for a year and Steve Gartin was also my room mate and a
co-practitioner under Uncle for several early years. I lived with Paul
de Thouars for several months in California and Steven Plinck was my
training partner in those days, later when I was in need Steven Plinck
graced me with his hospitality as well. Now the previous and original
Kuntaosilat group was deleted, presumably by Steve Gartin, as he was
given owner access by Steeve Malette a number of years ago. I was
asked to help clean up the libelious posts that had been occuring so I
joined the previous group, made one post stating this intention, and
voila, Steve Gartin presumably saw it and deleted the group. I had not
realized that he had been given that access. Well not to be easily
defeated, Steeve Malette immediately restarted the group as this
current one. I would like to set the record straight on several matters.
First, in this group we do not stand on rank. Mostly Mas (an
Indonesian honorific) has been used in my opinion as Mutual Admiration
Society. People have been using Steve's distance learning to gain
certification because they could not do the hard work with a teacher.
I do not recognize any ranking and promotion given through this
method. Any distance learning is good but only as a supplement to a
qualified instructor and quality training partners.
Second, Uncle (or Bapak) Willem de Thouars does not recognize any rank
given by Steve Gartin nor does he recognize Steve as a finished
student. He has asked Steve to stop exploiting his name and image, and
this has been ignored.
Third, Steve Gartin does his own style, not Uncle's style.
Chas Clements was never a practicing student of Uncle as far as I
know. He does his own style, not Uncle's style.
Uncle has continued to evolve his style and teaching and Steve Gartin
has not been a part of this.
Fortunately I continue to have positive relations with Uncle and
continue to learn from him on my visits to Colorado and when he visits
me in Montreal. For several years I was bringing him up here four
times a year. I practice the forms that Steve practices as most of
those are early forms taught by Uncle. Steve has not updated his
expression of these forms, nor learned the newer forms that Uncle has
continued to show over the years.
I teach at Phil Gelinas' Martial Arts school in Montreal and have for
eight years. I started my studies in Judo at the age of ten, in 1964.
I continued in Kenpo at 17. Later I studied JKA Shotokan with Yutaka
Yaguchi and then Tae Kwon Do under Russell Peron and Song Ki Padula. I
studied Okinawa Te with Earl Alston, up to a rank of Nidan, (in the
early eighties). Earl encouraged me to study with Uncle and also
pointed me towards an eclectic approach to the arts. I studied Serak
with Paul de Thouars for seven years. I have studied with Uncle for
almost 30 years. I touched and practiced many other martial arts over
the years. I also am a Yoga instructor, certified by the late Swami
Vishnudevananda. Many of my studies were concurrent.
I apologize for the need to start by setting the record straight, but
seeing as the previous group was deleted presumably by Steve, as no
one else had both the authority and motive, I feel the need to make
this statement for the record.
I encourage people to contribute in a positive manner.
Racially derogatory posts will not be tolerated. However people are
allowed to discuss cultural issues even in disagreement. We do not
want to enforce homogeneity just civility and respect.
As per my last post on the previous group:
Do not confuse Pride with Honor;
nor Intransigence with Integrity.
Please enjoy your visits!
