If you have received this e-mail it is because I have talked to you about 'cross in some form or another and you live in/near columbus. I thought it would be useful to get a list of people together to organize local practices and perhaps organize carpools to races. I know I don't have e-mail addresses for a few people who would be interested, so please forward this e-mail to anyone I may have missed and have them e-mail me at sikdar.2@.... If anyone would like me to remove them from this list, please let me know.
I will be heading to the
Grandview Area park around 6pm tonight if anyone would like to join. We should have four cones and two adjustable barriers that are UCI regulation and can be lowered to something like 8 inches. So, they're great for newbies. If anyone else has cones, please bring them and we could potentially setup a small course.
Hopefully, there will be a good mix of experienced and new riders and we can have informal technique practices, etc. The season starts in less than 2 weeks, so bring your friends, mountain/road/cross/commuter/whatever you want to ride, cowbells, lights, food, etc. If you have any questions, shoot me an e-mail or you can call me on my cell phone. It would be great to see some new riders out there, so spread the word!
any thoughts on a cross practice tonight? i think a couple good hours would be great.
we should set up a small course and do 10-minute temp intervals on it as well as skills stuff, starts, etc.

“the only people that interest me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing ... but burn, burn, burn like roman candles across the night.” - J. Kerouac -- On the Road
Hi Eric,
I'll try my best to answer any questions.
1. No pre-registration, only day of for Cap City Cross this year. Good
news, if you've never raced any bike races (road, cross or mtb) then
it's only $10 if you race the C's. It's a 30 minute race but the most
fun you'll have in 30 minutes!
2. Yes. This year our series is completely open. If you'd like to try
an A race with the big dogs (60 minutes) go for it. But be warned the A
race will have current and ex-pro's as well as many top state ranked
racers. Very fast! Fun to watch, (Ring cow bells) and learn.
3. Definitely. Try it on your mountain bike first. You won't be
severely handicapped on your mountain bike, especially in the C race.
If you have skinny tires (1.8" or so), I'd put them on. You'll notice
the difference when you have to carry your bike for 30 yards in a cross
race but other then that you'll do fine. No bar ends are allowed in
cross though.
4. I doubt you can pre ride Olentangy except the morning of since it's
a private business. We should be announcing a few cross practices
starting next Wednesday September 5th. Feel free to come out to one.
We'll keep you posted.
Do a search on youtube.com for 'cyclocross' you'll find tons of great
videos that really highlight the sport, especially the Belgian races.
Also check out road bike reviews cyclocross forum: http://forums.roadbikereview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=47
5. Cross isn't like road racing or mountain bike. It's just fun! Be
prepared for a short fun intense roller coaster ride. Oh, don't be
nervous. Cross is a very safe sport.

We just have a few questions.
1. Do we need to register in advance, or can we register the day of?
2. Do we choose our class (A,B,C) at first?
3. Is it okay to ride our mountain bikes at first instead of bona-
fide cross bikes?
4. Are we able to go out to the site and ride the course in advance
to get a feel for it and practice a little?
5. Any other newbie things we need to know, like stuff we have to
bring, etc that people often overlook thier first time?
I'm sure day of registration is fine, no worries. You will have to choose your class, but I recommend Cs as a starting point. And yes, mtbs will be fine, you just have to remove bar-ends, if you have them.
You can generally ride courses in advance as long as it's public land that is open to this kind of thing all the time. However, if not, it's best to check. I don't know the answer for this particular venue. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
As for practice, find a park with a lot of grass and practice, practice, practice. If you check out the OVCX series, (check google, ohio valley cross, I think) you'll see there's a race in Heath, Ohio, the previous weekend,
which isn't too far at all. It may make sense to go watch and get a feel for what's going on.
Nothing else you'll need to bring. You won't need a camel back, or really even a bottle for the race. Drink plenty before hand and you should be fine. Just the regular race stuff, just know it's a hard effort, so don't over dress.

We are proud to announce Seagull Bags
is sponsoring our race raffle. The winner will get a custom made Cap
City Cyclocross messenger bag. It's easy to enter the raffle. You are
automatically entered each time you race and if you bring an extra
racer we'll give you an extra ticket!
Most
of you might have already gotten this if you are on the OVCX list serve so
sorry if you are getting it again!
I
am putting on a cyclocross clinic with John Verheul from JBV Coaching (John is
‘cross world’s silver medalist Danny Summerhill’s coach) on
September 15th and 16th in Burlington, KY (near the borders of OH and
IN). The clinic uses portions of the OVCX course that will be used on
September 16th.
You only need a UCI license to do the elite race at a UCI event. None of the Columbus races are UCI sanctioned. Possibly in the future.

Hello all,
I'm new to the group, I just joined when I heard about the Columbus
cross series on another listing. Do you know if a UCI license will be
required to race in this? It has always bugged me to pay 15 bucks or
something, in addition to my race fee, to race. That's something that's
kept me from racing in the past (in addition to the lack of training,
motivation, fitness...)
Eric,
All of the CCCX races will be run under USA Cycling permits/insurance.
You will need a USA cycling license to race. I think it costs $60/per
year but for the last 2-3 years they've had a discounted license come
out in the fall since it expires in December anyway. It's great for
people who only race cross but I'm not sure when it goes on sale. If
you don't buy a yearly license you will have to purchase a one day
license for each event. I think they cost $10-20 in addition to the $20
race fee. (still cheaper then playing golf!)
But!!! If you've never raced before and are going to try out a C race,
we have a special deal for you! We'll announce the details soon but
first time C racers that have never raced cross, road or mountain bikes
can come out and try cross racing at a reduced price. We'll also have
discounts for all junior and women racers.
A UCI license is only needed if you are an elite (cat 1-2) racer that
is going to enter UCI races.
Hope to see you at a few races. It's addicting!

Hi All,
You may have heard a little buzz about a velodrome in Cleveland. Yes,
there is a project in the works, and we've made tremendous progress in
the past couple months. We have narrowed possible sites down to one
with the most potential- we are researching feasibility now and
beginning informal talks with the city. Also doing a mountain of
paperwork, including putting a trademark on the name. Its pretty cool
though. A website will be up soon describing our goals, and we've
started a blog: www.velodrome4c.blogspot.com so that everyone can keep
up on the progress.
The latest good news is that we have financial commitments over
$100,000. Now we can say the project is rolling- (forgive the pun)
There is a lot you can do for the project- mainly by spreading the
word. A good portion of the money is considered a matching grant- one
of the parameters is that the matching cant be from just a few donors.
The contributor wants to see strong support from the whole cycling
community. We have to put together a Pledge Sheet of everyone who
would like to promise any amount. The most important thing is as many
people as possible. You can pledge just by replying to this email
with your name and the amount you would like to contribute.
Please visit the blog occasionally. And if you would like any more
information about anything else you would like to do for the project,
or more specifics on the business plan, please don't hesitate to
email. Just write "info" in the subject so I can get to it sooner.
Life's Good,
