I seem to recall this being a College RPI group... When did it turn
into "Too Hot for TV- The Romper Room Story"?
Why are the 'Cats always near the top? Because they have some
tremendous athletes and they have a tremendous coach. Do you really
think that they could play at such a superb level year after year
without SOME talent SOMEWHERE?!?!?! Whether on the coaching staff,
on the court, on the bench...
Why was the flag called on Miami? There was contact. Not a ton...
but Nedney wasn't exactly HAMMERED on that field goal attempt,
either. It happens. Miami STILL could have won without that play.
They didn't. Game over.
All of this conspiracy theory crap just doesn't fly with me. Too
much has to go the right way for any of it to really come to
fruition. The only conspiracy theory that I will accept is Selig
setting up some plan to "help" baseball while really only putting
money into Milwaukee (incidentally, his daughter's pockets).
Now, what was the score of that Grinnell game?

This week's edition of Palm on Sports will probably not have any
guests. That means that the phones will be open for the entire hour.
So, if you have any burning questions on the RPI, the selection
process, the BCS, college football or college basketball in general,
this is the night to get them in.
The number to call in to the show is 1-877-913-9739, and it airs
tonight from 9-10 CT.
Hope you all will listen in!

Next week two Div III teams, will meet, Grinnell College and
Ripon, that both play Div I schools in the silly season are set to
play each other. Grinnell is averaging over a 125 pts a game and
Ripon can also score.
Want to venture a guess how many pts will be scored? Its like a poll
but not as reverent as the polls in group. How about 230.

1) It's not that I don't think that Gonzaga has put together a nice
program. I think that they have put together a very good program.
But this year is not like the past 3. They have lost to Indiana,
Kentucky, Georgia, Stanfurd and St. Joe's, and I wouldn't call any of
them particularly bad losses. St. Joe's has been decent the past
couple of years, and, well, I'll get to Stanfurd in a minute. My
only problem with them, is that there only really quality win is over
Utah. They won at NCSU, and I'll give them a little credit for
that. Otherwise, they've lost all of their challenges and won
against the second-tier teams. I believe Lunardi calls such
teams "Paper tigers."
2) Stanfurd ALMOST lost tonight. But, they didn't win. Oregon State
lost that one. If OSU remembered how to hit free throws, that game's
over, and Stanfurd would have been 0-2 in Pac-10 play before the
Arizonas and Oregon. That would have hurt quite a bit. I will agree
that they had a rather courageous non-conference schedule, but losing
back-to-back games against Montana and Richmond really hurt. They
lost Teo Johnson to the NFL, and a couple players to injury, let
alone Borchardt and Jacobsen to the NBA. I think they'll make the
dance, but they'll be worried on Selection Sunday.
3) Like ESPN says on their Men's College Basketball home page, Cal's
starting to make some noise on the west coast. They dominated Oregon
all over the court today. They shot well, the rebounded well, and
they forced far more turnovers than Oregon normally commits. Oregon
normally scores over 90 points per game, and today they scored 72, a
good number of which came very late in the game as garbage points
when Cal was trying to close out the clock. Cal plays at Arizona on
February 1st, and that will be a very interesting game to see how far
these Bears have come and even moreso towards how far they can go.
Unfortunately, I'm on the west coast and have been a life-long Pac-10
fan, so my knowledge of the other conferences tends to be a little
thin. I think the ACC should play out very interestingly, and the
SEC will be very, VERY interesting come late February. The team that
really is catching my eye right now is the streaking Wolverines,
though. I plan to see them after their OSU, PSU and Northwestern
run, and if they're still tearing things up, we have a team that
might start turning heads nationally pretty soon, too.
Finally, any thoughts of another Bracket experiment this year,
Jerry? :-) I'm willing to take Ceci's Pac-10 place when it's all
said and done... Just kicking it around.
Welcome to Conference Play, ladies and gentleman. This is when the
season really starts.

Sorry, usually more detailed than that.
It's my internet radio show, and you can listen live starting at 9 PM

too. Tonight's guest is Dennis Dodd of CBS Sportsline.

the Zags have been dissed before, let's give them a bit of a break.
Consistently, they have a quality program. (I didn't say stellar,
just quality.) Georgia, I agree, does need some respect right about
now. And I agree, Stanford needs to drop a bit.
yet let's remember, it is still early. And his rantings are
basically just that. I read Lunardi for entertainment purposes.
I know it's a meaningless bracket, but I couldn't help but be
dismayed a bit by Lunardi's first edition of Bracketology 2003.
There are a few things that scare me: 1) I'm not sure Gonzaga
deserves even its 11 seed; 2) How is Stanfurd still getting votes,
let alone a 7-seed; 3) Is anyone going to start respecting Georgia?
Just a few minor questions to throw around.
--Distad
One of the hazards of being on vacation is that I see almost no
basketball when I'm gone. This week, I missed an old favorite, the
Indiana basketball coach going completely ballistic with the officials.
The biggest differences were that it was not Bobby Knight, but Mike
Davis, and that Davis apologized all over himself afterward. I never
saw the highlight, but if anyone has it in a file or knows of a link to
it online, I'd appreciate seeing it.
Thanks!

Well the officiating in general was pretty bad both ways. Both teams were
hammering each other some possession, while others one player would touch
another and get called for the foul. But the free throw shooting had to be
expecting, especially since Grinnell intentionally fouls if a "shift" has been
on the floor too long.

If you're talking about Cole Robertson, he dove after his own miss trying to get
an offensive rebound, he wasn't pushed down. The play happened right in front
of me from my seat at the scorers table...

Doesn't help either that Grinell had 35 fouls which lead to 41 of 50 FTs.
Either way a box score
like this is impressive.
Grinnell 56 54 110
Drake 73 89 162

Given Grinnell's recent publicity rush, I thought I'd post this:
I am a current student at Grinnell. Let me explain the system to
you. On
offense, Grinnell takes a shot, either a 3 or a layup, within 10
seconds. We
try to get 1/3 of our misses as offensive rebounds. We then press
and if our
opponents break the press, they get an easy layup. We also
substitute in our
entire lineup every minute or so. This results in a largely
increased number
of posessions in the game, making it possible to score that many
points. This
also works because we are in a relatively weak conference, a
conference that
has never advanced beyond the 2nd round of the NCAA D3 basketball
tournament.
As to tonight's game, I was there, and although we lost badly, I
wasn't
disappointed. Do you want to know why? This is becasue all of
Drake's team
is on scholarships and Grinnell, as a D3 school, does not offer
atheltic
scholarships to any athletes. All this game proves is that D1
athletics is
much, much better than D3. In addition, Grinnell prides itself on its
academics, not its athletics, being ranked in the top 15 of National
Liberal
Arts colleges. It is also the week before finals, which at Grinnell
is
referred to as hell week, and athletes get no break on anything.
Tonight's show airs live at 9 PM CT. My guests will be Andrew Bagnato

A-10 is awfully weak this year in my opinion. It's Xavier, big gap, rest
of the conference.
Dayton, Richmond, and St. Joes could do some damage, but the only at large
POSSIBLY from this group is Xavier, which assumes they lose the conf
tourney.

Tonight's version of Palm on Sports may prove to be very interesting.
We'll be talking about the Big Ten bowl situation with David Jones, of
the Harrisburg Patriot-News. Among the things we'll discuss is just
how "guaranteed" is Iowa's spot in the BCS.
If you have bowl and/or BCS questions, call in to the show at
1-877-913-9739.
It's on from 9-10 CT tonight. Go to either collegerpi.com or
collegebcs.com for a link to the show.

I have a question for the people who voted for Conference Usa. Is it
me, or has conference USA been the most overrated conference the past
four or five years years? I picked conference USA to do well last
few years in the tourney and they let me down Big time. I believe
that Cincinnati is the only team that really has a chance every year
in the NCAA tourney. I really believe that this conference should go
down in power rankings, especially below the A-10 and possibly should
they only have two teams going every year?
Oregon State opened up as a 9 1/2 point favorite. The early money
rolled in on Oregon State making them now a 10 1/2 favorite. Good luck
tonight with your gang.
