If you happen to be watching the games today from Boise, I'm across from the
Utah St bench in a green plaid shirt.
The arena seats 13,000, and I'd say maybe 7000 are here, mostly rooting for
USU, which isn't too far away. MU brought a smattering of fans.
I'll be updating my travelogue on the site later tonight or tomorrow
morning, depending on how late today goes. You will be able to read my
columns on cbssports.com I'm writing MU-USU and FSU-Wisky unless the others
turn out upsets.

First game losses by high-seeded teams in conference tournaments.....
Pitt losing to West Virginia
Kansas losing to Baylor
Clemson losing to Georgia Tech
How badly hurt could their seedings be? Kansas seemed to be on the fringe of
discussion for a 1-seed and surely took themselves out of the running.
Pitt...could they have hurt one of the sport's best cases for a 1-ssed?
Clemson...banished to Miami or worse and sliding down the S-curve. Yikes.
I'll have the fun of watching the Villanova-Louisville semi in the Big East just
a mile or so down the road from Freedom Hall. Couldn't be in NYC, instead
celebrating my wife's birthday while she is attending a big dog show in The
Ville.

My answer was based on bad math. Don't ask me why, but I was putting
four teams with seeds 1-4 in each venue for the first weekend instead
of two. Duh.
Miami seems to be pretty far from any campus of a team liable to get 1-
4 seeds, but much more likely to get ACC team(s) or SEC team(s) (if any
qualify) than to put ACC clubs in Big East country. IMO, FWIW, which is

Of course, last year I attended games in Tampa on the first weekend
where the high seed teams were UConn and Vanderbilt (both 4s). At
least Nashville was only about a ten hour drive from the venue, so it's
not like the committee can afford to keep everyone close to home when
the venues are in distant corners of the country.

In case you haven't been to the site in a couple of days, I wanted to let
you know I will be in Champaign on Sunday to live blog the Purdue-Illinois
game. The game starts at noon CT, and I'll be on about a half an hour
before that.
I will also be live blogging the Penn St-Purdue game from West Lafayette on
Wednesday the 11th on my way down to Indy for the NCAA mock selection
committee meeting. That game starts at 5:30 CT.
The live blogs are part of the free site, so you can get there from the main
page at CollegeRPI.com or also from the link on the main page of the
subscription site.
I am trying to promote the blog to fans of the schools involved. I know how
to get a hold of Purdue people, but I would be grateful for any assistance
in locating communities of Illini and PSU fans on the web. I know Illinois
has an active board at Scout.com, but I am not allowed to promote the blog
there (someone else might be able to, but I can't). If you know how to find
those places, please send me e-mail at jppalm@... (as opposed to
posting on the list).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, and I hope to see you all on
the blogs!

I don't really think anything is a given. I wouldn't say it's a given that
UConn ends up in Philly (though pretty likely). Nova can play there as
anything from an 11-up.

I believe a team is allowed 3 games at a venue, more than 3 makes them
ineligible. Nova plays louisville (1/10), syracuse (2/07) and gtown (2/28)
at the wachovia. Pitt was not at the wachovia, it was at the spectrum. Texas

Has the ncaa ruled that the spectrum counts as the wachovia? I know this has

This game was played at the spectrum so they could keep the wachovia number to
3. Just like the marquette game will be on campus. Similar to how they played
oklahoma on campus in 2006 to keep their number to 3 and remain eligible for the
wachovia.
They make more money at the larger venue, so they went with the spectrum over
the pavilion. But you're crazy if you don't think staying eligible at the
wachovia was a major reason for that spectrum game.

campus.
Has the ncaa ruled that the spectrum counts as the wachovia? I know this has
been an issue for discussion in the past, but I thought the decision went
the other way? They are not the same arena.
Thanks again.

Apparently, Nova played too many. I asked the NCAA today to double check
and they say Villanova can't play there.

Jerry,
In your host site information, why is villanova listed as a host team in
philly along with saint joseph's (pa)? I thought sjuofpa was the host site,
and nova played few enough games at the wachovia to be eligible to play
there first weekend?
Thanks

Because when the bracket was done, Providence was only three games over in
the league and hadn't beaten anyone competent all year. ND and Georgetown
were only one game under.
But, in general, no conference's standings are less meaningful than the Big
East's, even in March, because of wildly unbalanced schedules. Also, in
general, January conference standings are not particularly useful because
not enough games have been played.

Jerry ,
How come you have two teams under .500 in the Big East at 3-5 ( Notre
Dame and Georgetown ) but you don't have a team over that is 4 games
over .500 ( Providence ) in your Brackett ?
