Re: [collegerpi] Thoughts about NCAA Tourney

now this will raise some eyebrows.....

How about a 96 team system in which all regular season and conference tournament champions receive automatic bids.

If this was the case...seeds 1-8 would receive byes, while 9-24 seeds would play a first round.

I'm a small school type of guy, I know what it would mean for them to get extra chances at playing in the NCAA tournament.

Also, I'd say to get rid of the NIT as part of this set-up.

This would reward smaller schools mainly, but I seriously doubt that any at larges would be lost net (base pool of 34, same as present system there) while getting more teams a chance to advance into the tournament.

The elite schools would not be as affected by this, since the top 32 wouldn't really be affected.

Also, I'd say .500 to get an at large (current NIT rule) would cover most scenarios - against division I only of course.

I feel they should a) either go back to 64 with a maximum of 32
League Automatic Bids (currently this is set at 30) or b) go to 68
with 4 playin games (more likely than a). Does anyone think that a
rule will be put in place that will keep Conferences from getting no
more than 1/2 of their teams in, or not allow a team in unless they
are at least .500 (including end of year tournament games) in their
Conference.
