Just looking at the top 6 hoops teams in the coach's poll right now, Duke,
UConn, Memphis, Nova, Gonzaga, GW. Four of the top 6 do not have BCS football,
three don't have football at all. And the only two BCS schools are as bad as
they come in regard to football.
The idea that a school needs BCS football to succeed in hoops is one of the
biggest myths in sports.
People like to use the Final 4 and championship results to bolster the BCS side
of things, but here is how I see it over the last 10 years.
Non-BCS schools in the Final 4 - 1. Louisville (2005, I know they are now BCS,
but they weren't in the Final 4 because of FB contributions, 2. (UConn (2004, I
don't care if they were about to upgrade, they weren't good as a result of FB
and weren't a BCS school yet), 3. Marquette (2003), 4. UConn (1999), 5. Utah
(1998), 6. UMass (1996)
That's 6 non BCS Schools (and only Utah & Louisville were established D 1-A
programs) in the past 10 years. 6 schools in a decade, that is more than the
Big East has had over that stretch.
Most schools with big football programs also put a lot of effort into hoops,
thus are competative and make up a significant portion of the quality teams and
will have a greater representation in the tourney and Final 4. But there are
still a couple of dozen schools out there that put as much an effort into hoops
as the BCS schools do, and they compete just fine.
I am finished ranting. Feel free to discuss.
