I just read a post in the digest which seemed to suggest that Stony
Brook's women's team receive a bid to the NCAA tourney.
PLEASE!! This team is the poster child for the utter inability of
the RPI to actually determine the worth of any given team.
Thank heavens that the selection committees use more data than just
the RPI for selection and seeding.
Nothing against Stony in particular, but they should not get in.
There are literally DOZENS of teams more deserving of a bid.
Also, I think that it is obvious that the SOS calculations need
serious work as well. How in the HECK can a team with 17 teams below
100 on its schedule possibly have a SOS as high as #8? It is truly
an insult to the 20 or so teams which truly go out and schedule 5-8
teams in the top 25 or 50 IN ADDITION TO PLAYING BRUTAL CONFERENCE
SCHEDULES, WHICH OFTEN INCLUDE ANOTHER 3,4,5, OR MORE OPPONENTS IN
THE TOP 50. THIS MEANS THE TEAMS WHICH SCHEDULE IN GOOD FAITH HAVE
ANYWHERE FROM 10-18 GAMES AGAINST TEAMS IN THE TOP 50. Duh? Why does
the standard have to be based on opponents and their opponents W-L
record? SHOULDN'T IT BE BASED ON THE QUALITY (AND RANKING) OF THE
OPPONENT. THIS WOULD OBVIOUS FORCE THE COMPUTERS TO WAIT A WHILE
BEFORE POSTING, AS THEY COULDN'T IMMEDIATELY START CALCULATING BASED
ON RECORDS--THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY.
Anyway, here is how Stony is as of this morning:
Greenfield has them ranked 18, with SOS of 8
College RPI has them ranked 29, with SOS of 17
NCAA ranks them 37, and does not disclose their SOS numbers
Their ONLY quality win is over Temple at home by 2 points.
They also LOST to three teams ranked below #100. PLEASE!!
I repeat--Stony Brook is the Poster Child for the need to fix this
system
Hartford is another example--NOT one single opponent in the top 50,
21 of their 27 games against teams below 100 (11 below 200)
Yet, their RPI is 27 (CollegeRPI.com), 23 in Greenfield, and 33 in
latest NCAA. Duh? I don't care how good your record is when you are
basically playing Junior Colleges.
I'm sorry about the rant. I'm done now. It just drives me crazy.
Thank You,

PS For the life of me, I can't figure out why my Men Tigers are
rated so high in ALL the computers. I am at a loss. I agree that we
have the potential for a great team, but you usually need at least a
good head coach to get there---don't have one of them here. Again,
I'm sorry I went on so long.
