Can anyone explain why a #6 Utah team would get an automatic entry
but a #5 Texas would not? I understand there are 2 at large teams
but if Cal is #4 and Texas #5 why would the #6 Utah get ahead of a
#5 Texas?

That's how they set the rules up, presumably to guarantee access for a good enough non-BCS school. Technically, Utah gets in ahead of both Cal and Texas...
