Re: [collegebcs] Re: Never too early

It will be a long time until we see a full-blown 8 or 16 team playoff in college
football as much as I think it would be the most fair way to finally determine a
real NCAA D1 National Champion. Our best bet is to rely on baby-steps. We
already basically have a 2-team playoff. Since the BCS started in 1998, this has
proved to not be enough as there have been many #3 or #4 teams that were just as
deserving of a shot as the #2 teams were (see Ohio St in 1998, Miami and
Washington in 2000, Oregon and Colorado in 2001, USC in 2003, and Auburn and
Utah in 2004.)

By simply expanding this 2-team playoff to a 4-team playoff, you erase a LOT of
controversy and all you're doing is adding just ONE extra game for just TWO
teams aka "plus one." Yes, you may have the once every ten year issue of the #5
team having a gripe, but it seems as if 90% of the time, no one outside of the
top four really has a legit claim to playing for it all. It's tough to finish in
the top four - you usually need to finish either unbeaten or with one loss. If
you had two losses and finish in the top four, it's because you played a heck of
a schedule. You have to cut it off somewhere, and cutting it off at the top
four, while it might not be perfect, it's much better than just including the
top two which clearly isn't enough slots to include the deserving teams.

The format is simple: you just need THREE bowl games to agree to host this
"College Football Final Four." Let's say it was the original Bowl Coalition
Bowls: Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange. The top four teams are determined after the
conference title games either by whatever BCS rankings are in place or a
selection committee similar to NCAA Basketball. Teams are seeded 1-4 and play in
a 1v4, 2v3 format in two of the bowl games, with the winners playing a week
later in the championship game. All other regular bowl games still go on as
usual.

These three big selected bowl games rotate the title game meaning they would
host a semi-final two out of every three seasons, and a title game once out of
every three seasons. Of course you would have to either get the PAC 10 / BIG 10
to agree to give up the Rose Bowl relationship for this to happen, or you would
have to get the Rose to agree to join the rotation. I know this is asking a lot,
but it's time to move forward and forget "tradition." This has gone on too long
and we need to fix this ridiculous system.

Michael, as a Texas fan I know I speak for most, if not all
Longhorns, when I say it was a great experience to play Michigan in
Rose Bowl. What a great and classy school/program you have in
Michigan. Your fans were awesome. To me, this is what College
Football is all about. I know I may have enjoyed the game a little
more, but what a game. It was truly a game one had to win, but
neither deserved to lose. Our QB (Vince) gets lots of credit, but
your true frosh QB (Chad) played like a senior. No joke about the
possibility of Michigan playing in the Rose Bowl again next year.

It is time for a playoff of 4/8 teams. I really think they could
incorporate the BCS Bowls into the playoff system. I hate that the
NCAA's biggest sport is the only one without a playoff to determine
a true national champion. The title MNC really does not do justice
to this great sport.
