Last year, eight I-A schools opened at home against teams that had already
played a game, and six won, including ND over Wash St. I'll try and
research further back as well.

>> Notre Dame could play 100 games before they play
Michigan and they'd still stink. The ironic thing
about all this is that whomever came up with this
moronic idea completely disrespected BYU. Not that
they deserve any respect mind you, but college
football has a lot to do with psychology and the
message conveyed by this move is that Notre Dame needs
a practice game before they play the "real" game
against Michigan.<<
Please explain why it's "moronic" to put your team on
an even footing with a bitter rival. I'm not in the
habit of defending Notre Dame, but you're reading this
all wrong.
Before the change of schedules, Notre Dame was
scheduled to open with Michigan. If it's the opener
for both teams, no problem, but UM would have had a
game under their belt. The conventional wisdom is that
the single biggest improvement for any college
football team occurs between the first and second
games of the season.
Now the Domers will play BYU in the opener for both
teams and Michigan in the second game for both teams.
This strikes me as very fair and very sensible.
