Oh what fun it is to slide...or fall on your butt.
Wow, another year, another Ice Bowl is in the books. Thank You! Mother
Nature did not disappoint the 32 players that came out to Creekside for full day
of plastic tossing. A mid-week storm brought about 4" of snow and a little less
than a 1/2" of ICE, yes this truly was an Ice Bowl. Temperatures never rose
above freezing since the storm and the suns' rays did a fine job of melting the
top layer of snow in conjunction with a breeze so that snow melt froze almost
instantly. The temp at tee time was a mild 21 degrees with a high temp for the
day of 28.
With the exception of the tees, the course was beautifully covered in the
slick stuff and plenty of players moved cautiously to their lies, some were more
successful than others. The creek was about 85% frozen which made retrieving
discs a interesting affair, but I digress. As the day wore on, more divots in
the snow broke up the monotonous white landscape and helped to keep throws from
sliding all the way to the Arctic circle.
No absolutely incredible shots or Aces were reported, but we did end up with
a tie in the Open division that went to a 1 hole play-off, but more on that
later. The format for the 1st round was Open/Adv played from long tees to long
pins; Int played concrete tees to long pins; Juniors played Ace tees to long
pins. The idea was to move the 6 baskets that have alternate positions, but
thanks to the physical science of cold air and a colder ground, 4 were frozen in
place and were played in the longs both rounds. The 2nd round, everybody threw
from the concrete tee pads to the short positions, except the 4 that didn't
budge.
There were some great long putts made and there were a few "gim-mes" that
were missed. The "bagger" division winner beat out the entire Open division by a
stroke, throwing from same tees to same basket positions. Many locals played-up
and we had 11 open players, 9 baggers, 8 Int, 2 female and 2 junior contestants.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you all once again for your support
of disc golf and the Central Pa Food Bank. I will have totals for the food and
cash donations after I drop everything off Monday. Now here's Johnny-can't-type
