River Valley needs bmxer's to stand up and be counted in an attempt to demonstrate the interest, and need to keep the facililty open and oprerational....... In reading the following e-mail please be aware that Riverside Park is the name of the park River Valley BMX is located in, in Sumner Washginton... When they refer to "Kathy"; she is the Pierce County Parks Director, the head of the parks department......
This e-mail was received from Mark Crosby and is being posted in the hopes that people will stand up and be counted in this effort to keep River Valley BMX open and operational........
Thank you...... Mike Raich, T.O. Peninsula Indoor BMX Port Orchard, WA

Subject: riverside park
Could you please forward this to the bmx community thanks
we need as many people as possible there to save rivervalley
Dear Mark C
Thank you for your interest in Riverside Park and BMX track. We appreciate your concerns and are diligently addressing the issues with Riverside including the recent flood damage. At this time, the park will remain closed until we have worked through the permitting issues, associated costs, and the long range planning issues.
Kathy has met with the Deputy County Executive and provided him with a staff report regarding the history, option considered, and recommendation for the future of Riverside Park. We have asked for the Deputy County Executive to try to give us some feedback by the end of this week - if possible.
We are planning a tentative Public Meeting for March 9th at 6:00 PM at the Lakewood Community Center. At the meeting we will talk with folks about the issues, cost, and the next steps. We greatly encourage you to come to this meeting and bring your questions and/or concerns for the park.
If I can be of any further help, please let me know at 253-798-4092. Thank you again for your continued interest and welfare of Riverside Park.
I gave Jesus Sotelo (SBS) a monitor to give to Steve Behen, then PI BMX. It's not huge but I remember that you guys went through a few this year and the one I have is an extra one....I hope you can still use it!!
Rider Advancement.......... Remember riders that ABA rules require riders to keep track of your number of wins to advance to the next category of racing... We did the best we could to clear some 10" to 20" of snow in the parking areas to provide easier walking and movement of bikes, whether ridden or carried into the arena for gate practice.... Thank you to the riders that attended practice on Saturday; it seemed like a fun time was had by all... Roads were clear most of the way, unless you used the back way into the arena from Hwy. 16, and there was a little challenge of ice and snow left the last mile on Deep Lake Rd.
Several people commented that they were planning on going to Reno to open the new '09 season and needed time on the track, and gate practice...

What's So Special About Indoor......?
Having been away from bmx as a T.O. for nearly 2 & 1/2 years, and out of bmx as a spectator for an even longer time; I really don't know very many riders, and even fewer parents today... The people have changed so much that the faces are nearly all new to me... So, the last couple of weeks, as we prepared too and then did re-open p.i. BMX, I have been meeting new people and answering questions and hopefully helping them with a upcoming new experience for most of them; that of racing bmx indoors...
Several people have asked the same question, "What's So Special About Indoor"...??? None of the new folks have raced indoor single point bmx at the local level because it just hasn't existed for some two years now in Western Washington... The question comes from a curiosity about something different from what they have learned bmx is.... Some are attached to their local outdoor track, and aren't interested in traveling to another track, especially something new and much different than what they see as bmx...
My answer to their question, repeated by several new parents, was largely as follows:
First... The environment is totally different... At outdoor tracks people gather in groups in areas; ex: behind a favorite turn where they like the parking, or a favorite bleacher spot, or some other attractive spot to watch the races... Same folks, same location every race... The cheering from each area is often confined to when one of their riders is on the track, then the area goes silent, until another of "their" riders comes off the gate... At the indoor there is a confining space, namely the walls... People come into the building and take seats often times with strangers that quickly become new friends, with acquaintances that then cheer for your kids as well as theirs, and you find yourself cheering for their kids and not just your own anymore... A comradery grows at indoor that does not exist outdoors... The energy level at the indoor is so much higher that it is unimaginable for most people until they experience it for themselves... The cheering flows from moto to moto and the same areas of the bleachers sometimes seem to have riders in every moto... The excitement level surpasses that of any and all outdoor facilities due to the closeness of the spectators... Outdoor you need a large SCF or RCQ, or SCR to generate anything near what is normal excitement of the indoor environment...
Second... The closeness of the indoor lends itself to an improved learning environment, for both the riders and the parents... You are automatically closer to other people and that lends itself to many types of learning; be it asking questions of the person next to you just because you are close enough to see something that is different and you ask to find out about it, or just seeing many more things due to the propinquity of the situation indoors... Learning via observation is easier because you are much closer to the competition, other competitors, and other pit crew personnel...
Third... Over the past years, the race sizes have been larger than the outdoor program due to the obvious; more outdoor tracks with the localization that more track locations bring to the active membership... The indoor draws from a wider range of area, thus drawing a larger rider base to the events and improving not only the race size, but most often the competition level as well... Again, naturally more excitement...
Fourthly... the obvious, weather doesn't effect track conditions at the indoor...
I would like to Thank the folks that have spoken with me the last couple of weeks, it has been great meeting new folks again... I hope you can all enjoy the indoor environment the way I have for so many years... After our first winter season indoor, I was hooked and have enjoyed indoor more than outdoor racing every since...
The comments reported above are not just based on Peninsula Indoor BMX... The same phenomena's were apparent at all the local indoor venues over the years; high energy levels were apparent at Yakima Valley Indoor, Monroe Arena on the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, Oakwood Arena, Clark County Indoor, and in Oregon at McMinnville, Corvallis, Roseburg, Gresham, and most recently Eugene's Emerald Valley Indoor...
Sunday Morning -- registration is 10:30am to 11:00am
Entry Fees -- Points class = $15, Points class + Open = $20
See you at Peninsula Indoor BMX this coming weekend... ;-)
