Peninsula Indoor BMX re-opened this weekend --- October 18th & 19th
Some prep work was done during the week, by yours truly, with the help of Bob Riley wheeling a tractor around the arena...
On Friday, Bob prepped the first straight-a-way, the staging area, the gate location area, and started the first jump... While Bob was busy with those tasks, I was working on the turns...
On Saturday, what may have been the largest building crew we have ever had for a track build started showing up at 8:00am...
-- Rick VanderWaal arrived first with his tractor, and was waiting for everyone else, while some folks were still in the shower.....
-- Steve Clark also arrived early and joined Rick waiting...
-- Will & Dylan Wilson
-- T.K. & Brandon Corey
-- Nick Roth
-- Steve Bourke
-- Larry Spracklin
-- Jeff Klatman
-- Reo Gustin
-- Bob Riley
-- Lorin Van Ogle
-- Jim Olsen
-- Russ Parrish
-- Dana Mann
-- Alan Mazuti
-- Mike Raich
If I forgot or missed someone, I do apologize........
This group put up a great track, with some of the track prepared on Friday, they were able to pay some extra attention and time to making the obstacles the way the riders in attendance wanted to see them.... As you read the list of track builders you should have noticed several active rider's names along with several parents of some well known riders... This crew has experience around race tracks and used it building this track....
THANKS GUYS.... YOU ALL DID A HECK OF A JOB.... AS EVIDENCED BY THE EXCITED PEOPLE THAT RODE THE TRACK OVER THE WEEKEND...
We had some track building assistance with tractors being donated to help get the track built...
Rick VanderWaal furnished a tractor for the day...
Janice and Warwick Bryant donated a tractor for the day...
Premier Rentals in Port Orchard provided us with a two day for one, rental for a back hoe...
In Appreciation, thank you to all of you who provided tractor assistance....

Port Angeles BMX -- Port Angeles, WA -- www.pabmx.com
Final racing weekend for the '08 Season is October 18 & 19
Saturday Oct. 18 will be our Canned Food Drive race for the Port Angeles Food Bank. For every can of food donated the rider will receive $1 off of their entry fee.
Mike and I spent about 5 hours at the track today getting things ready for our grand re-opening. We finished setting up the computers and testing them and fired up the heaters to make sure they work. (they do :-) ). Talked with the arena owner while she loaded sheep that she was moving to her farm. We talked a little bit about having a greased pig contest this winter and received our copy of the lease agreement. Mike and I are going to be working inside the arena starting on Wednesday. He is going to be doing a little prep work on the tractor while I power wash the seats and get them nice and clean for the opening. Friday morning the backhoe arrives and Mike will start building the turns. When the build crew shows up Saturday at 8 am they will be able to give the obstacles there full attention. On paper this track should be the longest we have ever built at P.I. by at least a 100 feet.
Attached is the flyer for the Dale Holmes clinic. If you are thinking you would like to attend be sure and signup early to reserve your spot.
Marlene and I went on a little vacation this month, August '08....
After a day or two, on our first contact home we learned Lynn Markham had passed away...
Lynn Markham....
A friend, a confidante, a member of our bmx race crew for years, and an all around nice guy... Over the years, Lynn worked many crew positions at the races, stager (which he hated as much or more than anyone out there, but never complained if it needed to be done), infield official, starter, finish line, chief scorer (he often had some races scored completely after the first or second moto had been run), and anything else that needed to be done at the races... He showed proficiency as a tractor operator, in helping build indoor tracks, was able to assist in whatever was needed the tracks....
One night at the indoor when our old trailer-starting gate was giving us a particularly difficult time; Lynn came into the sign up area and said something to the effect, "damn it Mike, we have to do something about that gate, it's time we built a new one".... "Can I have Alan announce we are starting a drive to raise funds for a new indoor gate?".... I said fine, he went out and explained to Alan Mazuti, our announcer that night, what his plan was and it was time to step up, and Alan started the announcing for the new gate fund raising.... Thus Lynn was instrumental in starting the effort to develop the big steel trailer-gate used for the last years at Peninsula Indoor, the Canadian Grands, South Prairie BMX, and the first race it was used for, the double points race to open the Kitsap County Fair back in whenever...
Lynn was instrumental in changing the way we handled trophies at River Valley and Peninsula Indoor BMX... Lynn had taken over handing out trophies at River Valley, and along with that he worked on trophies while at the track... What few people knew was that when his racers were young, he and his kids were at River Valley nearly every night, the kids rode, practiced and played, and practiced some more, literally for hours each night.... Lynn would work in the trophy shack while the kids rode... At first, he would prepare the various trophies we had for distribution; but very quickly on, he started to repair the various damaged or broken trophies all tracks seem to accumulate, and turned them into recycled (new looking, if not new, but totally recycled) trophies... Our buyback program with Lynn running it started to make the track money, as we saved hundre
ds of dollars in trophy expenditure , Thanks to Lynn... He understood what the track needs were and the value of what he was doing to save the track money, thus making the track more profitable, all by himself...
Working with trophies took a new big step to that proverbial next level when Lynn got involved in the double points trophy work... At one of his first races handling double points trophies, he started a discussion with me about how we calculated the purchase of double point trophies, and how many sets of trophies we would purchase for any given event... He quickly came to the conclusion that we could order 1/2 of what was "needed" and would have trophies left over due to the buyback program that was already in place at the northwest tracks... Again, Lynn had saved the track money... Cutting the double points orders in half literally saved the track several thousand dollars each season... As i told him many times, Thank You Lynn...
Our hearts go out to his family, suffering with his loss... May he rest in peace...
Although we only spoke infrequently these last few years, as he visited the track to see what was up, and what had changed; the hardest reality when a friend passes on is knowing that you can no longer just pick up the phone, or e-mail them and expect to communicate with them any longer....
While on vacation, we were able to catch Jill Kintner on T.V. at the Olympics...... Congratulations Jill.... Nice Going....
We all know Peter would have been screaming for Gold, but i think he would be most happy for you bringing home a medal... and I know he always was, and still is, very proud of you.... Good Job Jill.......
When we arrived home and i started going through the e-mails i found another sad note..... With Thanks to Ken Pliska for sending the following on the passing of Noel Grossman...

I normally don't respond to the whole group but thought others might
like the answer -
The nationals run with a 2 moto transfer. So minimum - each rider
gets 2 tries to make their mains. Should they have more than 2
gates of riders which is not likely in the age groups you noted then
they could run a semi round.
Friday is a pre-race. Double points. Smaller numbers but still
great experience especially for a new rider to give it a try on a
bigger scale.
Saturday & Sunday are the 2 national races. Same process though - 2
moto transfer to make your main.
There is a 20 minute practice on Friday - and 1 on Saturday only.
They are really meant to experience the track and gate. There is no
practice on Sunday- we are running the B schedule - so check out for
your times for each child - that is the ONLY time they will be on the
track prior to their races.
Hope that helps- the experience is awesome and you can't beat being
here in your own backyard.

I have a couple of questions about the Natz this weekend. I would be entering a 8 year old intermediate (if he's healthy) and a 5 year old novice. How many motos will they get in each respective class? I most likely would only be able to get them there on Friday or Sunday or possibly both days. Is there any practice on Sunday? Doesn't look like it to me on the schedule. Damn expensive too, sheesh!

Just a quick note that we will be racing on Easter Sunday 3/23/08 , 2:00 to 3:00 registration, Rain or Shine, Easter festivities to follow race.
Saturday the 22nd we will also be hosting a work to ride day, Show up between 9:00am & 12:00 to help out (or if you have previously helped HDBMX in the 2008 season)
and ride sometime after 12:00. Work that needs completed: Entire track watered & swept, then any areas needing it patched , white lines , Bark chips spread, old registration booth moved, trench dug for new buildings electrical, wheels on old concession booth repaired, new tower location leveled - ETC. ETC.
Sorry about NOT getting this out sooner but there has been some technical communication problems in getting E-Mails out concerning the needs for this track & I am sure that this will be taken care of SOON

I just updated www.oregonbmx.com with 2008 race information. If you

I will be out of the office starting 03/06/2008 and will not return until
03/10/2008.
I will respond to your message when I return on Monday, March 10th.
Here is a general schedule for the 2008 race season for HDBMX ! For a more detailed schedule and information please go to www.highdesertbmx.com.
This Saturday, March 8th we will be hosting a WORK TO RIDE day.If you work between the hours of 9am to 12pm Saturday, or if you have helped the track in any capacity this 2008 season you are welcome to ride after track work is done around 12:00pm!
We will be trying to complete the framing of the new registration/concession booth and carpenters are a high priority at this time.
The track is really starting to come along great but there are several places that need attention, we will need people to water, rake, groom, screen dirt etc..Bring your gardening tools, wheel barrows, pitch forks, weed burners etc.. There are a couple of piles of bark chips that need to be spread & some clean up of the spectator area needs to be done.
Every Tuesday & Thursday we are having open practice from 4pm till dusk - all ABA rules will apply.
Hope to see you this weekend.

Jaque Talbert our track treasurer, JJ Nortons mom, Milo & Jacksons grandma, was hospitalized Feb.22nd & still remains in the hospital as of this time. she has blood clots in her lungs & will remain in the hospital untill the problem can be resolved, keep her in your thoughts & prayers. The staff & riders of HDBMX would like to give Jaque best wishes & complete & speedy recovery & best wishes to the nortons family.
WORK PARTIES SCHEDULED FOR EVERY SATURDAY ( Sundays if possible ) THRU MARCH
Here is an update from this Feburarys work parties.
Mark Smith has been making great progress on the new consession/registration booth, if work continues to progress the booth should be close to being ready by opening weekend.
Lots of clean up has been done & with 1 or 2 more good working days everything should be in good shape in the spectator areas.
Track condition is looking fair, About 70% of the track has had its 1st packing, all the puddles have been pumped out & with a few good days of weather the packed areas shoud start setting up even more. The rythme section has still not been packed.
Saturday March 1st will be our next work party,
On the Schedule:
Grooming of the Rythme section from 9:00 AM till 12:00 - Rolling of rythme section will start @ 12:00
The face of the 1st jump will need to be recapped before its next rolling. We need to generate more cap dirt.
All 4 corners will need to be groomed & rolled 1 more time.
Any soft spots that were to wet to pack this last weekend will need to be taken care of ( About 5 or 6 spots)
Anyone that can burn the weeds will be welcome to do so.
2 piles of bark chips need to be spread out.
We are planning on trying to relocate the tower & we need to start building a footing base for the relocation of the tower.
Construction of the new building may be questionable due to the possibility of Mark not being in town next weekend ( March 1st) All other weekends we should plan on trying to complete the new building - Skilled construction workers will be a plus - We will update this later in the week
OK now here is the offer to you all, Work to Ride
Weather & track condition permittng, After the rythme section is rolled in, (Saturday March 1st) we will try to open the track for the 1st ride of the season to ALL WHO HELPED in this 2008 season at High Desert BMX - Helping at any phase (i.e. sweat equitty, consessions, registration, Donations, etc.) (who are a registered member of the ABA & HDBMX) This will solely depend on if we can get all the problem areas fixed and we can determin that the track will be safe to ride. Hopefully this test ride will show us whether or not we will be able to start running practices open to all starting way sooner than scheduled (I.E. the week of March 4th thru the 8th) It is my goal to be able to run a couple of practices per week all the way up to the NATIONALS in April - We are close to making that happen & it will happen if we get the help.
WORK PARTYS ARE SCHEDULED EVERY SATURDAY THRU MARCH
9:00 am till afternoon - all of these days will be considered work to ride partys - get lots of work done between 9:00am to 12:00 & earn the right to ride in the afternoon.
Contact:
Tim Walker @ 480-8766

We will keep you posted if any changes are to be made - Also check the web site often for changes & News
Thank You for that Information! Once I knew where to go, I found it easily! My son raced tons last summer/fall but he isn't on the ABA Point tracker at all. How do I look into this? He placed well in almost all his races. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for starting the group Brad! I actually found it just the other day when I was doing my searching for Nationals and just cruzing the track websites! I know I will be using it tons, as myself and my son are new as of last season to BMX but we plan to stay involved for a long while! We are getting ready to move to Portland, however, but I will still stay with the group! I anticipate needed help knowing the best places to go in the valley to get him on the track! I know nothing at all about tracks over there! Anyway, thanks again!
