Rode your loop today. I like it. Allgood is open but they have not laid the finish pavement yet.
Where you meet up with Kennesaw ave is past the construction.
I modified The Canton to Tower rd transition. Pulling that hill thenhaving to make a left onto tower with a goup might be problematic. I took Elizabeth under Hwy 5, Right on Church 1st left then left on MarbleMilldown to Tower to avoid the hihgspeed traffic in that area.

Have you rode Allgood between Shufflgrit and E-Piedmont recently? I thought I read that the DOT had it closed to grade a hill or something. Are they done with that work?
Kennesaw Ave also has a lot of construction going on where they are installing the Marietta Trail paths and new curbs. I rode it last Sundaybut your route may drop in past most if not all of it.
Here is one of my regular rides. I normally start near Free Fliteand go out to Kennesaw Mt via old 41but could easily be started at the Square run it backwardsheaded to Kennesaw Mt then up to Chastain/McColum pkwy or through the business park via Roberts back over to Sandy Plains. Problem is I think they are about to shut down Old 41 from the park up to Barrett to replace a Bridgeover the RXR tracks. We could cut up Stilesboro and cut through Mossy rock back to old 41 or take Polk to Burnt Hickoryaround the back side of the mountain up to Stilesboro like the route you show.
Looking forward to the first ride!

Mr. Fleck,

I am disappointed in your response and it shows me your near sighted understanding of local economics.  There were over 120 pro cyclists just in the pro race this year and over 50 juniors in the junior races (some were from Florida and TN).  All of the pros are ones that came from all over the US to race here in Roswell.  The economic impact of the national level race that Roswell is dwarfs the investment.  Dotty Etris at the RCVB is currently gathering the data that supports the impact that these events have on reducing our taxes by providing positive impact.

Before anyone can cut any $$ out of any spending I would first understand what outside $$ are spent here in Roswell.  I wonder how much $$ is spent by the people that come to the free concerts at the river?  Most are not even Roswell residents and leave immediately.  Roswell pays the electric bill for the concert, the police presence and I doubt anyone stays at hotels in Roswell.  I don’t mean to knock the concert series but I am just using it as an example of how you can look at each event in Roswell and on the surface make a knee jerk reaction.

Do you know who rides a bike?  Or should I ask, do you know who doesn’t ride a bike?  I wish you luck in your future.

Mr. Broadwell,

First allow me to express my disappointment in not being able to attend your meeting on the 7th.  I had a previous business engagement as I had advised you when you initially contacted me that I would be unable to attend.

Honestly, the City of Roswell, not unlike most municipalities, is facing serious budgetary pressures.  Roswell’s Strategic Planning and Budget Director has forecasted deficit budgets that will consume all excess reserves and result in Roswell being “Insolvent” in late 2013.

Relative to the questions posed on your website to all candidates for your upcoming meeting, and most specifically if candidates were willing to fund the Roswell Criterium bicycle race in future years, I have to concur with what my opponent, Mr. Jerry Orlans, stated at the March 18, 2009 council meeting when your organization was granted $30,000.  During that meeting Mr. Orlans directed “sponsors be found for future events.” His comments can be found on the city website.

Additionally, one of your chief sponsors, Mr. Todd Kaib of Roswell Bicycles was quoted in the Roswell Beacon (March 24, 2009) after the above council meeting stating that last years request for financial assistance was a “one time thing”. He even went so far as to state “we don’t want this to be taxpayer funded”. I certainly accept him at his word.

I do hope your organization recognize that there will be many legitimate requests for funding by other deserving organizations next year.  So all that I can honestly offer is that when economic conditions improve, then I would be more than happy to consider supporting both your proposed studies, as well as your bicycle race.

Respectfully Submitted,

Lee Fleck

To All,

If you like the Hospitality Ride challenge (one person called it the nasty ride – it was so hard it was nasty) you will love the Alpharetta Century.  The same guy designed both.

The creative way to come back from Steve Tate (the main road to Burnt Mountain and Big Canoe) is a pleasure ride on some of Georgia’s typical country life style roads.

The views of the mountainscapes are spectacular.  The near town routes are familiar but the roads near Burnt Mountain are new and picturesque.

Bundle up and nail this urban to country and back last century ride of the season.  It is also put on by the same wonderful people that sent you your shirt after the Hospitality Ride on GA 400!

Dear Stakeholder,

The National Park Service (NPS) received a total of 563 comments as a result
of the public meetings on April 30, 2009 and June 17,2009, and has developed
five alternatives (attached) based on these comments. These alternatives
will be evaluated in the Environmental Assessment.

In early 2010 the NPS will use a process called Choosing by Advantages(CBA)
to select a "preferred alternative." The CBA process evaluates the costs
and benefits of each alternative within the context of the park's goals and
objectives. The draft Environmental Assessment should be completed by
spring 2010. The park will hold another public meeting in early 2010 to
present the draft EA and the results of the CBA process.
That will be followed by another 30 day public comment period. Public
comments will be invited in writing at the public meeting or via mail and
website submission.

We will notify you again by email when the public meeting is scheduled.
Thank you for your interest in the National Park Service and Chattahoochee
River National Recreation Area

50,000 Signatures, and a Big Google Announcement

Posted: 13 Oct 2009 09:34 AM PDT

Congratulations, y’all! 50,000 signatures!

We hit that number about a week or so ago, thanks to ‘Jessica’ — the 50,000th signature.

Shortly after we hit the big 50k mark, Google made a small announcement on their LatLong blog:

The best part about this new dataset is that we’ve been able to add a lot of new, detailed information to Google Maps – information that helps people better explore and get around the real world. For example, college students will be pleased to see maps of many campuses; and cyclists will now find many more trails and paths to explore. Soon we even plan on providing you with biking directions to take advantage of this new data. Of course, in the true Google spirit of “launch and iterate,” we plan to work with more data sources to add new features in the map.
This is totally awesome. We heard the rumors before, but this is an official announcement. Great stuff.
Now we’re all curious to see the first cut. If there is a city or organization working with Google to provide them actual bike-specific street data (say, on the relative ‘bikiness’ of certain streets, Class I/II/III, contra-flow routes, etc.), I haven’t heard about it yet — but that’s not saying much, as I’m usually the last to know. :)
This page talks about path data provided by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (an awesome bike and walk path-creating and and right-of-way-preserving organization) and the U.S. Geological Survey (putting our tax dollars to work, baby!).
So, cross your fingers, hope for the best, and when the first cut is out we’ll try it out and offer constructive feedback and help to make it the best bike-trip-eventually-fully-multi-modal-planner ever!

To All,

Kelly is a friend of mine and she has had a serious accident and is in need of assistance.  Go to this web site to see the details about the ride and how to help.  The ride is from our starting point of the Thursday night rides at riverside park.

http://www.kellysbikeride.org/ is the web site.

Kelly first moved to Roswell a few years back and I met her soon after she arrived.  In 2007 she was entered into the Florida Ironman, but had a stress fracture in her foot so she couldn’t run.  In the morning the results paper came out while I was in line to sign up for 2008.  Guess who was highlighted as the fastest bike time?  Yup it was Kelly she smoked even 98% of the guys!

Please if you can come ride or donate on the web site.  The ride should be a good one and not too hilly as I didn’t design this one J.

As part of this pledge, the Department will launch a new demonstration program this year to evaluate techniques that states can use to get the most out of their efforts to end this destructive behavior. The League will continue to work closely with the USDOT to ensure that bicyclists interests are represented in these discussions. Sandy Springs Monday Night 6:30 Ride (IMPORTANT! see the WARNING below)

KING & QUEEN RIDE OF DUNWOODY:  6:30 PM Moderate, Strenuous:  18 or 25 Miles  I've done both these routes.  They are extremely well marked...Hanks

Please join the SBL (Southern Bicycle League) in conjunction with support from the Concourse Athletic Club and Cousins Properties on our newest ride.      We will be meeting at the Councourse Athletic Club roundabout at 8 Concourse Parkway.   This route entails some of the best climbs, descents, and flats that Dunwoody/Sandy Springs has to offer.   We expect both an A & B Group, and the ride will be no-drop for the B group.  Ideally, riders should be able to maintain a 15mph pace for the B group.   No ride if raining.  Helmets required.  For more information, contact Robert Weaver 404-933-5918 or Sydney Weaver at (404) 434-2199 or 770-851-7727

Warning!! Early in this ride  you will turn right off of Hammond Drive on to Perimeter Center Pkwy., you will pass Fudruckers, and cross a new bridge.  When you have crossed the bridge, beware of a deep, bicycle tire sized, groove on your far left side. Stay to the far right side of the road until you get to light on Lake Hearn Drive then turn left.  I know of two cyclists that the "bicycle hating" groove has taken down.  Wait till you are almost at the light before you get in the left lane to turn on to Lake Hearn Drive ! ... The "new" old Steel Magnolia ride Wednesdays 6:30pm in April starting at Nancy G's  Fountain Oaks Shopping Center corner of Long Island and Roswell Road.

Several women have expressed interest in getting a new women’s ride like the old Steel Magnolia ride out of the old Buckhead Church.  So, why not bring back the old Steel Magnolia ride?  We used to get a nice turnout of women cyclists of all levels at this ride and it would be great to see more women out this spring.

Cycleworks ride will still be on Tuesdays and women are always welcomed, and Wednesdays can be the women’s ride, same course, but perhaps a little less frenetic          pace.

Friendly hill sprints are absolutely expected as in the past—it wouldn’t be name Steel Magnolia if that wasn’t the case.  J

Men are always welcome to join the ride too!

This is NOT a no-drop ride, but I will have maps first few rides and the streets are marked W.

Please feel free to pass this ride on to other folks!  Men and women!

Hope to see you there!    Lissy

Cyclists,

The Dunwoody Cycling message post below is from Robert Wilhite (2008 Southern Bicycle League President).  Robert's wife, Kelly, was in a very bad crash with a hit and run van last weekend.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

The message after Robert's is about another accident victim, Kelly Crouse.  There will be a charity ride for her this Sunday, October 18th.....Tommy

as of now, Kelly has a broken collar bone, 3 broken ribs (same side),
a partially collapsed lung and a concussion.  she is in the spinal
section of Gwinnett Hospital in Lawrenceville.  My prayer is that the
MRI in the morning will confirm she has no cervical spinal fracture.
no injury to any organs or other areas except the above.  will be in
hospital for a couple of days to monitor the lung to make sure
pneumonia doesn't set in and that lung doesn't collapse anymore.

can't bring myself to sleep; I just want to make sure she is ok thru
the night.  I know I don't know most of you personally but I can't
express my sincere gratitude for your prayers and offers to help; it
is very humbling.

I don't know where everyone is spiritually but I don't/won't apologize
for my faith in Christ and I(we) covet your prayers as I know He is
very much alive and knows exactly what's going on.  Immediately after
I ran up to Kelly after jumping off my bike, a young couple came from
nowhere and offered to pray for us.  It was like Jesus w/skin on
reassuring me that we were not alone.

I hope to meet each one of you who have reached out and personally
tell you thank you and express my overwhelming gratitude for your
kindest wishes and prayer.  It would be my privilege.

CVCA FALL COLORS RIDE

Saturday, October 31st @ 9:30 AM. (Rain date Sunday Nov. 1st)

The Coosa Valley Cycling Associaton (CVCA) has invited NARC members,
atlbike members, SBL members, and anyone else, to join their annual Fall
Colors Ride starting from James H. Floyd (Sloppy Floyd) Park off Hwy 27
N., in Summerville, GA.

Be ready to Ride at 9:15 am. Leave at 9:30 a.m.

NOTE: Parking and fee

Please park at first park entrance on left (as you enter). Restrooms are
located at the top of the hill where there is plenty of parking, so you
might want to go there first. Please Note: There is a DAILY PARKING FEE
of $5/per vehicle which helps fund campground renovations, group shelter
construction, dock replacements and much more. The CVCA will NOT be able
to pay fee this year. I will have passes at the entrance starting around
8:15. Please try to bring correct change. I will also hand out the cue
sheets at that time, but read the directions below for further information.

DIRECTIONS FROM ATLANTA:

Take I-75 NORTH to Adairsville, Exit 306.

Take Hwy 140 West to Hwy 27 N. (approx. 15 miles).

Turn right onto Hwy 27 N and go approximately 12 miles to Sloppy Floyd
Park turn off on Left. Stay on Sloppy Floyd Lake Rd. for 3 miles until
you reach park .

Webgeek prepared a ride start page for Sloppy Floyd State Park:

http://atlbike.org/index.php?module=htm .... &pid=12%20

TWO ROUTE OPTIONS:

1) 67 miles or 63 miles. This route will follow Chattooga Metric Route
(yellow arrows). Upon returning to school on Hwy 114, riders can follow
yellow chevron markers with initials L.O. (long option) to take scenic
route back to park (67 miles) or continue to follow metric markers back
to Hwy 27 and park (63 miles).

2) 52 miles or 48 miles. This route will follow Chattooga Metric Route
(yellow arrows) until Lucky's Grocery Store stop in Menlo at 27.8 miles.
After the store stop, this group will follow yellow chevron markers with
initials S.O (short option) until they join back in with metric route at
approximately 36 miles (metric mile 51.5). Route will then continue
following Metric yellow arrows back to school. Riders can then follow
either the yellow metric markers back to park or follow the yellow
chevrons with initials L.O. (long option) to park.

Cue Sheets will be provided for both routes with the L.O. option.
There will be 3 store/bathroom stop on each route, but main one will be
at Menlo. Bring money to buy food/drink or carry what you need.

There will be a SAG car for the metric option which can also carry your
extra clothing from the cool morning start after it warms up. There may
be a SAG for the shorter option, but not a definite. Most people will
probably do the metric, so if you are doing the shorter option, you
might want to find a buddy so you're not left out there alone.

Another option for people wanting to ride less miles is to buddy up and
each person ride 1/2 the route and drive the other 1/2. That would also
provide another SAG.

AFTER RIDE FESTIVITIES: Lunch at Bella Roma in Rome after ride. Bella
Roma is located on Hwy 27 N. approximately 4 miles south of Hwy 140. (On
your way home!)

QUESTIONS: Feel free to contact Chris McCormick, Coosa Valley Cycling
Association at cycling50@....

Lissy

COMPLETE STREETS POLICY PROGRESS

Three New Policies!
In the last month, we've marked three major milestones in complete streets policy adoption: the second-largest county in the United States announced a policy, and two communities became leaders in New Jersey and Alabama by adopting the first policies in their respective states. These three jurisdictions have brought our numbers to 110 total jurisdictions with a stated commitment to complete streets, with over 30 policies adopted so far this year.

Cook County, IL - On October 7, Cook County Board President Todd Stroger announced a complete streets policy via executive order. With this new policy, Cook County will give new focus to developing a comprehensive, integrated and connected transportation network for pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transportation riders.

Montclair, NJ - Marking a first in the state, Montclair's Mayor and City Council unanimously voted in favor of a Complete Streets Policy (.pdf) at their October 6 meeting. The policy, first drafted by the Township Engineer, ensures that in new construction and reconstruction, travel by pedestrians, bicyclists, public transit, and motorized vehicles and their passengers shall be safely accommodated. Following a failed attempt to adopt complete streets hindered by fear of costs, the new policy mandates that costs for pedestrian, bicyclist, or transit accommodations that come to more than 5% of total project costs be funded by local tax dollars.   Other communities with such initial concerns about costs have usually discovered them to be unfounded once they begin implementation; we hope Montclair will arrive at the same conclusion.

Fairhope, AL - In a first for Alabama, Fairhope City Council passed a resolution on October 12 to follow a complete streets policy in all future roadwork. In support of local advocacy organization Smart Coast, the National Center for Bicycling and Walking - a steering committee member of the National Complete Streets Coalition - will hold a series of meetings and events with local mayors, commissioners and council members throughout the Mobile Region. Read more about the groundbreaking policy in the Mobile Press Register.

New Jersey Groups Call for Statewide Policy
Pedestrian fatalities in New Jersey have increased 33 percent this year, prompting a group of New Jersey advocates - the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, New Jersey Future, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, AARP New Jersey, Disability Rights New Jersey, and Environment NJ - to join together in calling for a statewide complete streets policy. A TSTC blog post illustrates the dangerous conditions caused by incomplete streets in the state. Their call gained attention from the Ashbury Park Press, which reported that Governor Corzine's office would look at a policy. An editorial in the New Jersey Star-Ledger lauded the effort, calling complete streets "a sound idea."

Quick Takes: Policy Progress

·         Lexington, KY: Residents attended a public meeting Tuesday night to discuss how complete streets can make the city more "people-friendly." With strong support from Mayor Jim Newberry, the meeting is one of several ongoing discussions that will ultimately change transportation policy and design standards in Lexington. (Lexington Herald Leader)

·         Hattiesburg, MS: A new non-profit comprised of community leaders, businesses, and passionate supporters - the Pinebelt Pathways Partnership - has set its goal on a more walkable, bikeable region. They hope to have Hattiesburg City Council adopt a complete streets policy before years end. (Hattiesburg American)

Visit our "Current Campaigns" page to see the growing number of Complete Streets campaigns across the country (and to add your own)!

Topeka Misses the Point
After levying a half-cent sales tax to fund road maintenance and improvements (including sidewalks), hope was high that this would provide opportunity to begin completing the streets in Topeka, Kansas. Yet, city officials have fallen prey to a common misconception about funding Complete Streets, declaring that the road repairs would be funded through the bond measure, but "Complete Streets elements" that added "extra costs" would not. National Complete Streets Coalition Executive Director Barbara McCann clears up the misconception in a recent blog post.

Federal Policy Update
The National Complete Streets Coalition was busy promoting complete streets on Capitol Hill this month.  We kicked things off with our 100th Policy Reception on October 5th where we were joined by Coalition members, Congressional staff, representatives from US DOT, and complete streets supporters from around the country in celebrating the momentum and progress the complete streets movement has made in such a short time.  While Chairman Oberstar was unable to attend the event in person, in prepared remarks he congratulated the Coalition on our accomplishments by stating "your efforts have proven that complete streets policies are popular and effective, and can work in urban, suburban, and rural settings across the nation" and he asked for complete streets supporters from around the country to talk to their Members of Congress about why a federal complete streets policy is important.  Thanks again to American Planning Association and Representative Matsui for co-sponsoring the event and to our supporting partners HNTB, Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., Kittelson & Associates, and Gresham Smith and Partners.

We continued to build support for the Complete Streets Act of 2009 with the addition of several co-sponsors: Senator Bill Nelson [FL], Representative Rush Holt [NJ-12], and Representative Lois Capps [CA-23].  If you live in their districts be sure to thank them for their support. We are now up to 38 Representatives co-sponsoring H.R. 1443 and 9 Senators co-sponsoring S. 584.  We expect more co-sponsors in the coming weeks as a result of two recent lobby days: we partnered with Transportation for America on their fly-in where health advocates from around the country came to DC to meet with their Congressional Delegation on the connection between health and transportation and asked their Senators and Representatives to support of the Complete Streets Act of 2009. Also, several of Smart Growth America's state and regional partners came to DC last week and included the Complete Streets Act in their list of priorities for legislation that promotes smart growth and livable communities.  Tell your Senator or Representative to support the Complete Streets Act by visiting our action page today.

COALITION NEWS

Coalition Welcomes New Partner, Members
We are pleased to welcome the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging to the National Complete Streets Steering Committee.  Better known as 'N4A,' the association represents more than 600 Area Agencies on Aging, established through Congressional action in 1973 to respond to the needs of Americans 60 and over in every local community.  N4A also represents the needs of 246 agencies that serve the needs of older American Indians, and Alaskan and Hawaiian natives (known as 'Title IV' programs). N4A is a leading voice on building a society that values and supports people as they age, and we look forward to working with them on Complete Streets!

We also welcome the American Heart Association to the Coalition as a supporting member.  AHA is working to reduce coronary heart disease and stroke, and its Michigan Affiliate, Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan has already been active in the campaign for Complete Streets in the state.  Welcome, AHA!

Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., better known as VHB, is a new Silver Partner of the Coalition.  This Massachusetts-based firm provides integrated transportation, land development, and environmental consulting services through 18 offices and 850 employees located throughout New England, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Florida.  VHB has been involved in development of several Complete Streets policies, including the award winning Massachusetts Project Development and Design Guide, and the new policy in Rockville, Maryland.  We're really pleased to have this firm join the Complete Streets family!

Webinar: Planning Complete Streets for an Aging America
During this free webinar hosted by the National Center on Senior Transportation, AARP's Jana Lynott and NCST's Lucinda Shannon will discuss AARP's recent report Planning Complete Streets for an Aging America. They will review how complete streets policies provide an opportunity to increase safety and availability of travel options for older adults as well as policy and practice recommendations from the report.  The webinar is November 4th from 1 to 2 pm Eastern Time.

Complete Streets on the Road
The Coalition's workshops, offered in partnership with the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals, are scheduled all over the country in coming weeks. Yesterday, our instructors offered a half-day Complete Streets session in Eureka, CA for local planners and engineers looking to build healthy, active communities. Next Tuesday evening, we will offer a free introductory presentation to the Red Wing, MN community; planners, engineers, and other decision makers will participate in a full-day workshop the following day. In early December, Dayton, OH will host a region-focused workshop. Want to bring a workshop to your community? Check out our workshops page for the details!

COMPLETE STREETS NEWS

Newspapers Focus on Travelers with Disabilities
The Minneapolis Star Tribune this week discussed the barriers deaf and blind Minnesotans face daily when simply traveling to work, to a friend's, or even to the bus stop across the street from home. The Chicago Tribune, introducing a recent report by the League of Illinois Bicyclists, highlights a street project that included a sidewalk that proved to be  a "walk of life" for a resident in a wheelchair, who previously was unable to visit the park a few blocks from her home. Including these travelers in planning and design early in the process - as would happen under a complete streets policy - would help ensure all future transportation projects are not barriers to travel.

Livability in the Spotlight
As discussed in October 7's Weekly News blog post, transportation has a big role to play in creating livable communities. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood was vocal, proclaiming Walk to School Day on October 7th represented a view into a more sustainable future.  He also discussed what livability means to him during an interview with AARP Bulletin.

Complete Streets in Our Neighbor to the North
Recent transportation project discussions in Toronto have inspired the Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation and the Toronto Cyclists Union to form a Complete Streets Campaign. First working to research the many successful local movements in the U.S., the Campaign has garnered media attention from several outlets. Transport Canada (our neighbors' equivalent of a national Department of Transportation) recently examined the potential of complete streets implementation in Canada, finding numerous benefits.

Quick Takes: Complete Streets Talk Around the Country

·         Alameda, CA: Planning Board President Marilyn Ezzy-Ashcraft makes the case for a more bike-friendly Alameda, proposing a complete streets policy to ensure all users - bicyclists, pedestrians, public transportation riders, and drivers - are accommodated when building or reconfiguring roads. (SF Gate)

·         Denver, CO: Eight city departments are collaborating to bring complete streets to Denver through the Living Streets Initiative. A recent Denver Post article explains the economic benefits of streets that designed and operated to accommodate everyone. (Denver Post)

·         Chicago, IL: The League of Illinois Bicyclists released its audit of recent Chicago-area road projects, (In)Complete Streets (.pdf), this week. In looking for how pedestrians and bicyclists were accommodated in the projects, the League found that local governments do a better job than the state Department of Transportation - who has yet to implement a complete streets policy mandated by a 2007 law. (League of Illinois Bicyclists)

·         Michigan: Complete Streets advocate Rory Neuner has a great write-up in this month's Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan newsletter (.pdf) detailing all the great strides taken across the state to ensure safe, livable streets for all. (Michigan Complete Streets Coalition)

·         Mt. Pleasant, MI: After the City rejected a Michigan DOT design for a main route through town characterized as "a terror for pedestrians," the Michigan Morning Sun advocates building a complete street that looks beyond moving cars and into accommodating people - be they pedestrians, bicyclists, or drivers - safely. (Michigan Morning Sun)

·         Minnesota: The Minnesota Department of Transportation posted a revision of its Complete Streets Feasibility Report on October 16. Public comment is due by November 9, and the final report will be released in December. (Minnesota Complete Streets Coalition)

·         St. Louis, MO: Local blogger and Regional Director of Development at Washington University, Alex Ihnen, writes why a complete streets policy is key to improve the City's public transportation. "It's not enough to connect someone from one public transit stop to the next," he says. "Public transit must connect to its surroundings, to shopping, to work, to home." (NextStop STL)

·         Dallas, TX: Cyclists convened on City Hall Plaza on Wednesday, October 7th to learn about a potential complete streets policy and how the City plans to create safer streets and link different modes of transportation. (Dallas Morning News)

·         Charlottesville, VA: Following a pedestrian fatality in the City, local politicians have latched onto a complete streets approach to improve safety, as well as health and quality of life. (Charlottesville Daily Progress)

Incomplete Streets Death
Susana Ramirez, 55, tried to cross busy East Charleston Boulevard in Las Vegas on October 13th when she was fatally struck by a car.  The 7-lane road is lined with residences and numerous shops, but only has very narrow sidewalks that lack any buffer from the vehicular lanes and crosswalks are few and far between - the nearest crosswalk was over 400 yards from where she was hit.

RESOURCES

Rethinking the Suburban Bus Stop
An excellent new resource comes to us by way of the Airport Corridor Transportation Association (ACTA), a Transportation Management Association serving one of Southwestern Pennsylvania's  fastest-growing suburban areas. ACTA conducted a study of various types of suburban bus stops and produced a detailed, colorful report with suggested new configurations for several types of stops (.pdf), from those serving busy roadways to those serving retail centers.

Making the Case for "Skinny" Streets
The Fall 2009 issue of Practicing Planner features a case study from Fresno, CA, where narrower streets were proposed to enhance walkability in a new development. When the proposed streets did not meet city standards for emergency and solid waste collection vehicle access, planners used a variety of research points as well as a field simulation technique - all detailed in the article - to overcome resistance to the "skinny" streets.

Road Diet Handbook Available from ITE
This new handbook is a comprehensive guide to road diets, discussing planning, analysis, design, and implementation. It includes guidelines for potential road diet site, design concepts, and lessons learned from several case studies.

Update: Communities Putting Prevention to Work Grants
Last month, we announced the availability of $650 million in grant money available to communities who want to promote system and environmental changes to increase physical activity. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership and America Bikes have prepared a list of sample pedestrian and bicycle activities (.pdf) that fit within the five categories of evidence-based interventions required as part of this CDC grant application. This is a great opportunity to develop a local complete streets approach, including hosting a Complete Streets Workshop!

Sidewalks, Good Public Transportation Lower Diabetes Risk
A new report in the Archives of Internal Medicine finds that adults living in neighborhoods with more healthy resources - easily walkable with access to healthy food and good public transportation - were 38% less likely to develop diabetes than others.

New Funding Opportunity with the Health Impact Project
The Health Impact Project, a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts, is a national initiative promoting the use of health impact assessments (HIAs) as a decision-making tool for policymakers. HIAs are a flexible, data-driven approach that identifies the health consequences of new policies, and develops practical strategies to enhance their health benefits and minimize adverse effects. The project is now accepting applications for up to 15 HIA demonstrations at the local, state or tribal level. Grants will range from $25,000-$150,000 each.

Pedestrian Safety Webinar
On Monday November 9, the Federal Highway Administration is hosting a webinar on its crosswalk guidelines, Safety Effects of Marked Versus Unmarked Crosswalks at Uncontrolled Locations. Three presentations will discuss the guidelines and how practitioners have used them.

FHWA Issues Call for Research Ideas
The Federal Highway Administration's Bicycle and Pedestrian Team are seeking input and suggestions for research ideas with a health focus. Submit your short, succinct comments by December 3, 2009 under the "Bicycle/Pedestrian and Health" category on the Surface Transportation Environment and Planning Cooperative Research Program (STEP) feedback page.

Bicycle Commuting Trends, 2000-2008
Using newly released American Community Survey data, the League of American Bicyclists has analyzed the number of Americans who commute to work primarily by bicycle. The number is up 14 percent since 2007, and up 43 percent since the 2000 Census.

Register for CNU Transportation Summit
CNU's Transportation Summit 2009, to be held in Portland November 4-6, will build on last year's summit and expand your knowledge of the latest findings in sustainable transportation. Early registration ends today, October 22!

"The Complete Streets concept will help make our community more livable and sustainable. It will help us attract and retain a workforce that includes people who want to live in a community with a diverse set of transportation and recreational options."
- Lexington, KY Mayor Jim Newberry in a press release

"Older people deal with the effects of incomplete streets every day, and make up a disproportionate share of pedestrians killed by cars in New Jersey. The needs of seniors and other pedestrians must be taken into account when streets and highways are built and repaired."
- Janine Bauer, a volunteer transportation advocate for AARP New Jersey, in the Ashbury Park Press.

I attended the portion of the park bond citizen advisory board meeting open to the public on the 12th of this month.  I was given the opportunity to speak.  I reminded the CAB of the need for natural surface trails in Cobb County and asked them if they needed any information, such as the fact that unpaved trails cost $5/ft and paved trails cost $100/ft, for evaluating the suitability of properties for park space.  The response was that no further information was needed.

The CAB announced during the meeting that today, the 26th, was the date the CAB expected to present their purchase recommendations to the county commissioners.

GA should have the most unpaved trails in the country. We have the best soil conditions for this project and I bet the $5 per SF is a high number. Every Highway and Major road way in the Metro Atlanta Area is ripe for a dirt strip on the County Owned Right of Way. These are wasted resources and a hidden Gem for an area with few alternative transportation choices. Thanks for your support of this low cost, low tech approach to our future transportation needs.

As somebody that has a LOT of first hand experience with unpaved trails let me give you the flip side that I have often run into. I help maintain Georgia's only OHV area that will accommodatefull size road going vehiclesand we often run into issues. Now personally I love unpaved trails when dry but you are talking about transportation needs so I am looking at this from athe point of viewthat would be used daily by hundreds as a non motorizedtransportation corridor not a recreation trail that would get most of its use on weekends. I would hate to ride or walk a muddy trail to get to work.
Thishas the potentialreally miff the eco people. Sediment getting into the creeks and rivers is a major concern and unpaved areascould be subject to being closed for several days after rains to mitigate the issue if there is streams nearby.
As an example:Most of the North GA OHV and Bicycle trails are closed when wet so keep that in mind and remember the goal of being used for every day transportation rain or shine changes the needs dramatically. There is also theneed to be graded to smooth it back out if it gets rutted from use while the soil issoftthat needs to be figured in if they don't close it during rains. The $5 per foot could easily come up to what a paved trail would cost over a 20year period if heavily used especially if used by wheeled transportation when you figure in the maintenance costs to hire a grading company to dress the trails.
Don't look at the cost of just "now"...look at the cost over a long period of time and any problems one surface may have over another in a variety of weather conditions. The goal is to get cars off the road every day not just when it is sunny, warm and dry. ;)

American Bicyclists Update Archives

October 26, 2009

We are excited about the latest round of Bicycle Friendly Community designations that you can read about below. Although we only have one gold (Eugene, up from Silver) community to congratulate, there are more than a dozen new communities that have really been working hard just to get to bronze - including some that might surprise you (I'm not going to say which those are!). Even better, their simple response to the news of their awards: "What do we have to do to get to Silver?!" That's why we have the program!

Sincerely,

Andy Clarke
President, League of American Bicyclists

Fall 2009 Bicycle Friendly Communities Announced

The League of American Bicyclists is proud to announce 15 new
Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC) and three renewing BFCs. Notably, 10 out of the 15 new awardees are from the Midwest to the East coast, disproving the myth that building great cities for cycling only works in the West. Three new states, Arkansas, Louisiana, and South Dakota have their first BFCs with this designation cycle. Read

Capitol Hill Updates

The League has been busy following several issues on Captiol Hill. Last week the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee Chairman's Mark to the Senate climate bill, which will act as a substitute amendment to the previously released Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act.  Also, the Senate is working to pass a six-month authorization extension for the Transportation Bill as a substitute to the three-month extension passed by the House at the end of September. Additionally, The Senate Commerce Committee and House T&I Committee have both scheduled hearings for this week to address the issue of distracted driving. The hearings will include discussion of a proposal by Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) that would provide incentives to states to pass laws against driving while texting or talking on a handheld device, and legislation introduced by Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that would require states to ban texting while driving or risk losing federal funds. Read more about these issues.

Livable Communities Task Force

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (OR-D) announced on Monday, October 19, the creation of the Livable Communities Task Force, a collection of Congressmen united in improving and expediting legislation that builds more livable communities. The task force, made up of 20 Representatives, is charged with working to improve our communities through federal legislation that helps reduce our nation's dependence on oil, protect the environment, improve public health and invest in housing and transportation projects that create jobs and give people more commuting choices. Application for Safe Routes to School State Network Project

The Safe Routes to School National Partnership recognizes that the potential for SRTS is much broader than the $612 million in funds made available through state departments of transportation as a result of the 2005 federal transportation bill. As such, the Partnership is continuing the State Network Project during 2010 and 2011 to leverage additional resources by creating SRTS State Networks in 15 states, and/or the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Just gleaning, but Holly Wolquist, a newly-found bicycle advocate friend from Marietta lost to Johnny Sinclair. Holly was a strong advocate for the bike trails at Burris park, and is the current chair of the Cobb Municipal Association. We met with Holly a few months ago and she seemed open to the idea of bicycle friendly initiatives. She invited Bike Cobb to speak about our organization and bike advocacy concerns at the Cobb Muni’s October meeting. We hope to be able to work with her in the future and wish her all the best.

The new mayor looks to be locked in with Steve "THUNDER" Tumlin gaining 80% of the vote. I will work on getting a meeting with the new mayor relatively soon.

The City of Marietta Park Bond is just about even. With 50.62% yes and 49.38% no.

http://elections.cobbcountyga.gov/results/11-03-2009/unofficial.htm

On a related note on our bike-friendly neighbors to the east, Roswell will have a run-off on December 1st between bike advocate, Jere Wood and former City Council member David Tolleson. Interesting note is that the wife of US Rep Tom Price, Dr. Betty Price has won a seat in Roswell city Council. I hope our friends in Bike Roswell reach out to these newly-elected officials and educate them about how great Roswell has become as a statewide leader as a bicycle-friendly community and to continue to build upon the past success.

In a closing observation, I find local off-year voting can be so different from the huge national elections. Oftentimes there is such a narrow margin with relatively low voter turnout. Who says one vote doesn’t make a difference? For those of you eligible to vote in the December 1st runoffs, I encourage you to do so.

Last Sunday's 3 State Fall Colors Ride on YOUTUBE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by Gary Quellet

Dr. Thompson is found guilty of all counts in LA road rage trial.

By Patrick Brady

Published: Nov. 2, 2009

The verdict was released Monday afternoon.

The verdict was released Monday afternoon.

Photo: Chris Roberts

A Los Angeles Superior Court jury on Monday found Dr. Christopher Thomas Thompson guilty of assaulting cyclists by abruptly stopping his car in front of them on a hilly Los Angeles County road last year.

Thompson, a former emergency room doctor, was found guilty of six felonies and one misdemeanor and could face as much as five years in prison.

He was remanded and ordered held without bail until sentencing. He was handcuffed in the courtroom after the verdict was read.

Thompson was accused of assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving causing specified bodily injury, battery with serious bodily injury and mayhem. The most serious charges stem from a July 4, 2008, incident on Mandeville Canyon Road, the road where Thompson lives, where he was accused of abruptly stopping his car in front of two cyclists. Other charges relate to a similar incident on the same road that did not result in injuries.

In the July 4 incident, the two cyclists hit the rear of Thompson's car; one slammed through the rear window, the other catapulted over the car into the road. In the earlier incident, the cyclists said they narrowly avoided hitting the rear of Thompson's car.

Wait till you are almost at the light before you get in the left lane to turn on to Lake Hearn Drive ! ... Tommy

Lissy

Subject: This weekend's rides

Dear BBBers:

Here are the routes for this weekend. Last Saturday’s rain washed out the Sandy Springs ride, so I’m using it again this week.

Saturday 11/07/09 Sandy Springs/Dunwoody

Meeting Spot: Johnson Ferry and Sandy Springs Circle behind Fidelity National Bank in the large parking lot where Target used to be.

Meet: 8:15 ride at 8:30 Note later start time.

Distance: 25 miles give or take. Probably the flattest route we ride other than the Silver Comet and the Brewery routes.

Breakfast/Brunch afterwards across the street at the restaurant across the street.

Sunday 11/08/09: Azalea Rd at Chattahoochee River

Meet at 8:15, ride at 8:30
Distance: 25 give or take
Meeting Spot: Parking lot adjacent to the boat dock and across the street from the boat house.

Directions: Azalea Rd off of Roswell Rd on the Chattahoochee; turn left onto Azalea after you cross the river if coming from Atlanta.

Snacks/coffee afterwards at the Starbucks on Roswell Rd., on the left about 2 miles back in town from the river.
