The Greatest Race ever in my opinion has to be Life Sign in the Little
Brown Jug....against the entry mates of Presidential Ball and
Rhiyad.....first he set the record in his first division.....then in
the final Rhiyad had the lead and his entry in his back.....Life Sign
was parked the the 3/8 was on the rail for only about 50 yards if that
then right back out on a half mile track being parked like that was
enough .........but he was nose and nose w/rhyiad and then he came off
the rail and Presidential Ball had a clear shot in the lane but
unbelievably Life Sign refused to Lose....it was Unbelievable....heck
if it wasn't the Jug it would of been one of the great races ever so
the fact that it was the greatest of all the harness races and the
absolute best stage that has to be the greatest.........

I've seen a lot of great races, I'm 44 years old and my first time at
the track was at 9 years old. Call for Rain winning the Breeders Crown
at Scioto Downs in 1988 when it seemed Jaguar Spur had the race won
easily was a big eye opener. He seemed to hit an extra gear nipping
Jaguar at the wire in track record 1:53.2.
Life Sign winning The Jug in 1993 was heart stopping.

But the race that I'll never forget was won by a conditioned pacer at
Scioto named Fashion Gun in 1970. It was an unusual once around 5/8
mile dash. Their were 8 pacers in the race, some were open horses,
some were claimers. Fashion Gun exploded from the starting gate on top
and by the 1/4 mile in 27 flat had a 10 length lead. As he hit the
backside turn he was some 30 to 32 lengths on top and the Friday nite
crowd was going crazy.

But as he approached the head of the stretch, you could see he hit a
wall, as he was tiring badly and slowing down. The field was
desperatley and quickly approaching. The driver was urging Fashion Gun
as wildly as he could, but Fashion Gun was done pacing. With less than
20 yards and still on top, he had slowed to a walk! As they hit the
finish line the field blitzed by him like he was almost literally
standing still. He had won! The first and only time I have ever seen
a horse walk to the finish line and win.

I have many fond memories from Vernon Downs when times were better.
They include Neville Pride winning the Gold Cup Trot...Harry Harvey
with Albatross as a two year old...Cory, son of the great Bret
Hanover bowing his head in the winner's circle, like his sire and
Staedy Star pacing 2:00 in the mud.

The greatest race I ever saw was won by a French trotter named
Sophora. He had won 9 races in a row and was going off at short odds
for his tenth try. He banged his head on the gate and made a bad
break in the chute. At the quarter pole his was 25 lengths behind.
Once he got flat, all he did was trot like the wind. He won in 2:00
flat, but considering how far behind he was, it was more like a 1:55,
which at the time would have been the world trotting record.

hi I noticed your message, Your mare has the Jate Lobell cross in
her for ,me I would consider a couple of studs in New York, one
would have to be art major, for obvious reasons, the Artsplace/jate
cross has been sucessful over the years as well as Art Major was a
beautiful animal with an unheard of amount of talent, the other
horse I would consider is pacific fella, the only down fall to him
would be the fact that both the cam fella and jate Lobell cross
tends to produce smaller horses, but at the same time they are
usually fast.Art major would probably carry a higher selling value
but his stud fee is almost three times the amount of Pacific fellas.
Good Luck.--- In cnyharnessracingenthusiasts@yahoogroups.com, Chad

Top Harness Racing Driver Case Sentenced
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: November 16, 2004

Filed at 9:40 a.m. ET
RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) -- A top harness racing driver was sentenced to
five years in prison for stabbing his estranged wife in the back with
a steak knife.
``I really screwed my life up,'' Walter Case Jr. said Monday in
court. ``I let alcohol take over my life. I wish I could take it
back.''
Case is harness racing's second winningest driver with 11,027
victories.

Case, 43, pleaded guilty in September to felonious assault. Police
said he attacked his wife on June 22, punching and kicking her until
she ran from the couple's home. He chased her into the street and
stabbed her, police said.
Nadine Case, 26, had moved out of their home two days earlier but
returned to give her husband a check to pay for horses she owned,
police said. The attack left her with a collapsed lung, and she filed
for divorce in August.
Walter Case will be eligible for release after six months, said his
attorney, Larry Whitney.
Case surrendered his license to race last year after accumulating 178
days of suspensions, most for violating the rule that calls for a
driver to keep both feet in the sulky stirrups. In March, the Ohio
State Racing Commission denied his request for reinstatement.

Top harness driver pleads guilty to attacking estranged wife

September 14, 2004
RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) -- A top harness driver pleaded guilty Monday to
attacking his estranged wife with a steak knife at their home.
Walter Case Jr. entered his plea to a charge of felonious assault in
Portage County Common Pleas Court. He faces up to eight years in
prison. No sentencing date has been set.
Police said Case attacked his wife on June 22, punching and kicking
her until she ran from the couple's home. He chased her out into the
street and stabbed her, police said.

Nadine Case, 26, survived the beating that punctured one of her
lungs. She filed for divorce last month.
At the time of the attack, Nadine Case had moved out of the couple's
home in Streetsboro but had returned to pay her husband money she
owed him.
Last year, Case was convicted of disorderly conduct and other
charges, records show. He was sentenced to 90 days in a work-release
program and had treatment for anger management.
Case, harness racing's second all-time winning driver with 11,027
victories, surrendered his license to race last year after
accumulating 178 days of suspensions, most for violating the rule
that calls for a driver to keep both feet in the sulky stirrups.

I volunteer an account of my experiences during a trip
to the meadowlands
track(a State owned and operated facility) on Jan 3
2004.
As I have done on a regular, consistent basis for
over 10 years and less regularly, off and on since
Roosevelt Raceway closed, I entered the meadowlands
track with my Sports Eye horse newspaper, a Big Gulp
drink and my binoculars. But, this time, for the first
time ever, I was stopped by the security guard with a
demand that I open my binoculars up. I asked him what
was the cause for this search, he did not state any
cause, he just demanded to search.I informed him that
the New Jersey State Constition prohibits search
without cause and notes a right to defend personal
liberty and property and that an Officer of the State
of New Jersey is responsible to adhere to the
Constitution of the State of New Jersey. The response
of the security guards which had gathered around me by
this time was "that is the way things are since 9/11".
My response was that their policy
lacks the basis to change the New Jersey Constitution,
it still exists.
Here reproduced is the text of the law:

NEW JERSEY STATE CONSTITUTION
ARTICLE I
RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES
1. All persons are by nature free and independent, and
have certain natural and unalienable
rights, among which are those of enjoying and
defending life and liberty, of acquiring,
possessing, and protecting property, and of pursuing
and obtaining safety and happiness.

7. The right of the people to be secure in their
persons, houses, papers, and effects, against
unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be
violated; and no warrant shall issue except
upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation,
and particularly describing the place
to be searched and the papers and things to be seized.

ARTICLE VII
PUBLIC OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES
SECTION I
Every State officer, before entering upon the duties
of his office, shall take and subscribe an
oath or affirmation to support the Constitution of
this State and of the United States and to
perform the duties of his office faithfully,
impartially and justly to the best of his ability.

The security guards blocked my way towards the track
ground floor entrance and
called a man who I would guess to be about 5' 9" with
dark hair parted in the middle with aviator style
glasses and a medium blue jacket who said he was the
security manager. He then also blocked my way and
insisted that my binoculars be searched before I could
go on my way into the track. The person I was with
pulled my binoculars behind my back and opened them
for the security guards to clearly see, wishing that
the confrontation would then end, but even then, it
did not end.
I complained to this man in the blue jacket that his
search had no cause and I wished to proceed on my way,
and that the contents were already known but he
continued to block my way and said that if I touched
him while attempting to enter the track I would be
charged with assault and demanded an extensive search
of my binoculars to gain admission. No other patron of
the track is subjected to such
a search where it is demanded that personal effects be
thoroughly searched to gain admission, especially
when, at this point, the contents were already known
to the security guards!
Therefore, I jumped around him without touching him,
and entered the track, followed by track security. I
was looking for a safe place, so I decided to stay
with a crowd of people on the ground floor watching
simulcasting. When I was standing amoung that crowd I
was approached by a man I guess was about 5'5" tall
with balding hair who identified himself as a police
detective. I said I was glad
he was there because the guards were harassing me.
This man who indentified himself as a policeman asked
about me refusing to be searched and I informed him of
the New Jersey Law, and aked for the cause of the
search. This request then seemed to enrage him and he
then said I was under arrest. He then proceeded to
push me from behind across the premisis and he started
to strangely huff and puff with his breathing and
tried repeatedly to knock my Big Gulp cup from my hand
and pushed me eventually towards an elevator. As I was
thrust near the elevator entrance, I was able to
dispose the Big Gulp cup properly in a garbage can. As
soon as I was out of sight of the public in the
elevator , the police officer proceeded to push me on
to the wall of the elevator and twist my arms behind
my my back to inflict pain upon me. I am sure he would
have escalated his attack upon
me if it was not for the fact that the officer
realized that there was a member of the meadowlands
service staff on the elevator witnessing when I was
pushed in. At no point did I resist arrest or do
anything to cause such a response. I was then taken
below to the police office and was eventually charged
with "improper behavior". The arresting police officer
said that I was being arrested for being an "Asshole".
I was charged with something called
2c:33.2(maybe c or e, can't read summons copy) with
the sworn complaining witness Mike Fortino of
meadowlands security. I can not read the name of the
person administering the oath or the signature of the
person Issuing the summons from my copy. I was also
informed that I am now banned from all New Jersey
Sports Authority Events.
The person I was with informed me that she was
refused upon numerous requests, the names of the
people involved in this incident which she would need
in order to
file an accurate complaint, and was not allowed to
take the complaint form from the meadowlands office
because the previously described man in the medium
blue suit refused her one saying it could only be
filled out in their office. This man also refused,
upon request, to identify himself to her at the
meadowlands office. The security manager at the
meadowlands also told her that:
"We can search whoever and whatever we want whenever
we want"

They are going to show Batavia Downs live on Time Warner cable
beginning Nov. 21. I was wondering if it will be shown on just
Rochester area cable, or will the races be picked up on Time Warner's
other state feeds? I am from Western NY, but I believe that Saratoga
is shown in the Albany area. Did showing the races there help
increase their track handle at all?

Currently, our focus is on tbreds almost exclusively. But this is not
out of design, rather because free and volunteer harness cappers are
hard to find, same is true for harness commentators, analysts and
opinion makers.

We have a Message forum where a dedicated harness racing forum

looking for people versed and knowledgeable in harness racing to

Per Henriksen is a creative trainer, willing to try different things
whether it be radical shoeing changes, different training techniques,
or innovative bridles and equipment.
His latest creation has helped to make it easier to warm up the
trotter Don Boss Vita, who makes his next start in the $12,500 Super
Bowl Series Consolation, the eighth race on Wednesday night at the
Meadowlands.
"He can pull really bad," said Henriksen of his headstrong
trotter. "When he pulls like that, I have to fight with him, and he
leaves his race on the track during warm ups. I took a backpack and
attached a metal screen to it, kind of like the screen on the
starting gate or a jogging gate. One of my assistants puts it on
their back and jogs a horse directly in front of me. I put Don Boss
Vita's nose right on that gate, and he will relax completely. I can
drive him with two fingers."
Don Boss Vita posted a 1:56 victory in the second round of the Super
Bowl Series last Wednesday [January 15] at the Meadowlands with Mike
Lachance in the sulky. The week before, he made a break and finished
eighth.
"Last week, I jogged him a mile, and he was pretty calm so I decided
to turn him a mile while warming him up," Henriksen said. " He took
off, I pulled all I could pull on him, and he still went in 2:05 in a
jog cart. He tied up from that and didn't race well at all. This
week, he was much calmer."
Although the trotter won his last start by eight and a quarter
lengths and trotted two to three seconds faster than those in the
other Super Bowl prelims, he did not have enough earnings in the
three-week series to qualify for the $80,000 final, the sixth race on
Wednesday.
Henriksen is also training the Iowa sensation, four-year-old
Homestead Dreamer, a winner of 27 of 32 career starts, who makes his
first Meadowlands start in Thursday night's second race.
Owned by retired veterinarian Dale Hein of Elkader, Iowa, Homestead
Dreamer won a qualifier at the Meadowlands on January 10 in 1:59 with
a last quarter in 27:3 seconds.
"He's a real nice horse, and I've made very few changes on him,"
said Henriksen. "Any horse who wins 27 of 32 is pretty good."
The son of Lucky Twenty-Five has banked $60,854 and has only
finished worse than second once in his 32-race career. That was
September 27, 2002 at Lexington's Red Mile, when he broke stride and
finished sixth.
