Top Harness Racing Driver Case Sentenced
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: November 16, 2004

Filed at 9:40 a.m. ET
RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) -- A top harness racing driver was sentenced to
five years in prison for stabbing his estranged wife in the back with
a steak knife.
``I really screwed my life up,'' Walter Case Jr. said Monday in
court. ``I let alcohol take over my life. I wish I could take it
back.''
Case is harness racing's second winningest driver with 11,027
victories.

Case, 43, pleaded guilty in September to felonious assault. Police
said he attacked his wife on June 22, punching and kicking her until
she ran from the couple's home. He chased her into the street and
stabbed her, police said.
Nadine Case, 26, had moved out of their home two days earlier but
returned to give her husband a check to pay for horses she owned,
police said. The attack left her with a collapsed lung, and she filed
for divorce in August.
Walter Case will be eligible for release after six months, said his
attorney, Larry Whitney.
Case surrendered his license to race last year after accumulating 178
days of suspensions, most for violating the rule that calls for a
driver to keep both feet in the sulky stirrups. In March, the Ohio
State Racing Commission denied his request for reinstatement.

Top harness driver pleads guilty to attacking estranged wife

September 14, 2004
RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) -- A top harness driver pleaded guilty Monday to
attacking his estranged wife with a steak knife at their home.
Walter Case Jr. entered his plea to a charge of felonious assault in
Portage County Common Pleas Court. He faces up to eight years in
prison. No sentencing date has been set.
Police said Case attacked his wife on June 22, punching and kicking
her until she ran from the couple's home. He chased her out into the
street and stabbed her, police said.

Nadine Case, 26, survived the beating that punctured one of her
lungs. She filed for divorce last month.
At the time of the attack, Nadine Case had moved out of the couple's
home in Streetsboro but had returned to pay her husband money she
owed him.
Last year, Case was convicted of disorderly conduct and other
charges, records show. He was sentenced to 90 days in a work-release
program and had treatment for anger management.
Case, harness racing's second all-time winning driver with 11,027
victories, surrendered his license to race last year after
accumulating 178 days of suspensions, most for violating the rule
that calls for a driver to keep both feet in the sulky stirrups.
In March, the Ohio State Racing Commission denied his request for
reinstatement.

I volunteer an account of my experiences during a trip
to the meadowlands
track(a State owned and operated facility) on Jan 3
2004.
As I have done on a regular, consistent basis for
over 10 years and less regularly, off and on since
Roosevelt Raceway closed, I entered the meadowlands
track with my Sports Eye horse newspaper, a Big Gulp
drink and my binoculars. But, this time, for the first
time ever, I was stopped by the security guard with a
demand that I open my binoculars up. I asked him what
was the cause for this search, he did not state any
cause, he just demanded to search.I informed him that
the New Jersey State Constition prohibits search
without cause and notes a right to defend personal
liberty and property and that an Officer of the State
of New Jersey is responsible to adhere to the
Constitution of the State of New Jersey. The response
of the security guards which had gathered around me by
this time was "that is the way things are since 9/11".
My response was that their policy
lacks the basis to change the New Jersey Constitution,
it still exists.
Here reproduced is the text of the law:

NEW JERSEY STATE CONSTITUTION
ARTICLE I
RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES
1. All persons are by nature free and independent, and
have certain natural and unalienable
rights, among which are those of enjoying and
defending life and liberty, of acquiring,
possessing, and protecting property, and of pursuing
and obtaining safety and happiness.

7. The right of the people to be secure in their
persons, houses, papers, and effects, against
unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be
violated; and no warrant shall issue except
upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation,
and particularly describing the place
to be searched and the papers and things to be seized.

ARTICLE VII
PUBLIC OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES
SECTION I
Every State officer, before entering upon the duties
of his office, shall take and subscribe an
oath or affirmation to support the Constitution of
this State and of the United States and to
perform the duties of his office faithfully,
impartially and justly to the best of his ability.

The security guards blocked my way towards the track
ground floor entrance and
called a man who I would guess to be about 5' 9" with
dark hair parted in the middle with aviator style
glasses and a medium blue jacket who said he was the
security manager. He then also blocked my way and
insisted that my binoculars be searched before I could
go on my way into the track. The person I was with
pulled my binoculars behind my back and opened them
for the security guards to clearly see, wishing that
the confrontation would then end, but even then, it
did not end.
I complained to this man in the blue jacket that his
search had no cause and I wished to proceed on my way,
and that the contents were already known but he
continued to block my way and said that if I touched
him while attempting to enter the track I would be
charged with assault and demanded an extensive search
of my binoculars to gain admission. No other patron of
the track is subjected to such
a search where it is demanded that personal effects be
thoroughly searched to gain admission, especially
when, at this point, the contents were already known
to the security guards!
Therefore, I jumped around him without touching him,
and entered the track, followed by track security. I
was looking for a safe place, so I decided to stay
with a crowd of people on the ground floor watching
simulcasting. When I was standing amoung that crowd I
was approached by a man I guess was about 5'5" tall
with balding hair who identified himself as a police
detective. I said I was glad
he was there because the guards were harassing me.
This man who indentified himself as a policeman asked
about me refusing to be searched and I informed him of
the New Jersey Law, and aked for the cause of the
search. This request then seemed to enrage him and he
then said I was under arrest. He then proceeded to
push me from behind across the premisis and he started
to strangely huff and puff with his breathing and
tried repeatedly to knock my Big Gulp cup from my hand
and pushed me eventually towards an elevator. As I was
thrust near the elevator entrance, I was able to
dispose the Big Gulp cup properly in a garbage can. As
soon as I was out of sight of the public in the
elevator , the police officer proceeded to push me on
to the wall of the elevator and twist my arms behind
my my back to inflict pain upon me. I am sure he would
have escalated his attack upon
me if it was not for the fact that the officer
realized that there was a member of the meadowlands
service staff on the elevator witnessing when I was
pushed in. At no point did I resist arrest or do
anything to cause such a response. I was then taken
below to the police office and was eventually charged
with "improper behavior". The arresting police officer
said that I was being arrested for being an "Asshole".
I was charged with something called
2c:33.2(maybe c or e, can't read summons copy) with
the sworn complaining witness Mike Fortino of
meadowlands security. I can not read the name of the
person administering the oath or the signature of the
person Issuing the summons from my copy. I was also
informed that I am now banned from all New Jersey
Sports Authority Events.
The person I was with informed me that she was
refused upon numerous requests, the names of the
people involved in this incident which she would need
in order to
file an accurate complaint, and was not allowed to
take the complaint form from the meadowlands office
because the previously described man in the medium
blue suit refused her one saying it could only be
filled out in their office. This man also refused,
upon request, to identify himself to her at the
meadowlands office. The security manager at the
meadowlands also told her that:
"We can search whoever and whatever we want whenever
we want"

They are going to show Batavia Downs live on Time Warner cable
beginning Nov. 21. I was wondering if it will be shown on just
Rochester area cable, or will the races be picked up on Time Warner's
other state feeds? I am from Western NY, but I believe that Saratoga
is shown in the Albany area. Did showing the races there help
increase their track handle at all?

magicalmike2001

Per Henriksen is a creative trainer, willing to try different things
whether it be radical shoeing changes, different training techniques,
or innovative bridles and equipment.
His latest creation has helped to make it easier to warm up the
trotter Don Boss Vita, who makes his next start in the $12,500 Super
Bowl Series Consolation, the eighth race on Wednesday night at the
Meadowlands.
"He can pull really bad," said Henriksen of his headstrong
trotter. "When he pulls like that, I have to fight with him, and he
leaves his race on the track during warm ups. I took a backpack and
attached a metal screen to it, kind of like the screen on the
starting gate or a jogging gate. One of my assistants puts it on
their back and jogs a horse directly in front of me. I put Don Boss
Vita's nose right on that gate, and he will relax completely. I can
drive him with two fingers."
Don Boss Vita posted a 1:56 victory in the second round of the Super
Bowl Series last Wednesday [January 15] at the Meadowlands with Mike
Lachance in the sulky. The week before, he made a break and finished
eighth.
"Last week, I jogged him a mile, and he was pretty calm so I decided
to turn him a mile while warming him up," Henriksen said. " He took
off, I pulled all I could pull on him, and he still went in 2:05 in a
jog cart. He tied up from that and didn't race well at all. This
week, he was much calmer."
Although the trotter won his last start by eight and a quarter
lengths and trotted two to three seconds faster than those in the
other Super Bowl prelims, he did not have enough earnings in the
three-week series to qualify for the $80,000 final, the sixth race on
Wednesday.
Henriksen is also training the Iowa sensation, four-year-old
Homestead Dreamer, a winner of 27 of 32 career starts, who makes his
first Meadowlands start in Thursday night's second race.
Owned by retired veterinarian Dale Hein of Elkader, Iowa, Homestead
Dreamer won a qualifier at the Meadowlands on January 10 in 1:59 with
a last quarter in 27:3 seconds.
"He's a real nice horse, and I've made very few changes on him,"
said Henriksen. "Any horse who wins 27 of 32 is pretty good."
The son of Lucky Twenty-Five has banked $60,854 and has only
finished worse than second once in his 32-race career. That was
September 27, 2002 at Lexington's Red Mile, when he broke stride and
finished sixth.

Pompano Beach, FL (January 18, 2003) - Not to be outdone by Brian
Sears five winners on Friday, Pompano Park Harness Track's leading
driver, Bruce Ranger, tied the track record again for most wins on a
single program, scoring seven wins Saturday. It was the eighth time
Ranger has won seven races on a program. Only Mickey McNichol (1983)
and Kevin Wallis (2000) have won seven races on one program, each
doing it just once.
Despite a brisk cool evening for south Florida with temperatures in
the low 40's, seven of the 12 races on the program went in 1:55 or
faster.

The fastest mile of the program was the 9th race $9,000 Open II Pace
as
The Aussie Fighter and driver Bruce Ranger swept three-wide on the
final
turn and was able to blow by pacesetter Joey Zaza (Wally Hennessey) to
win by one and three-quarter lengths in 1:52.3. Margie's Tyler (Walter
Ross, Jr.) was third. For The Aussie Fighter, it was a record mile,
lowering his previous mark of 1:58.3 by six full seconds.

In the 10th race $10,500 Open Handicap Pace, Distinctiv Skeeter and
driver Brian Sears, who had won three races earlier on the program,
shot
to the early lead with Champlain (Hennessey) sitting the pocket trip
to
the opening quarter mile in :27.3.

Corporate Rrraider and driver Peter Wrenn then came first-over before
the half in :56.4 and took the lead away from Distinctive Skeeter. The
Paper Wazoo was following the outside flow and began his move against
Corporate Rrraider at the three-quarters in 1:23.3. Talobt Advenger
and
driver Walter Ross, Jr. also got close to the action and tipped
three-wide on the final turn.

As The Paper Wazoo started down the stretch, Ross and Talbot Advenger
came right at him and the two horses battled to the wire with The
Paper
Wazoo winning by a neck in 1:53. Corporate Rrraider finished third.

It was the first win in three starts this year for The Paper Wazoo,
who
is trained by Serge Nadeau for the Ranger Stable and is owned by Fred
Monteleone of Pompano Beach. The Paper Wazoo is the local favorite for
the upcoming $250,000 Isle of Capri Pacing Series that starts in
February. The Aussie Fighter is also nominated to the Isle Series.

Vernon Downs, which was ordered Monday to close at the end of the
month, has won a reprieve, a track spokesman said Friday night.

A state Supreme Court justice in Albany on Friday granted a temporary
restraining order that allows the harness racing track to operate
beyond Dec. 31 for about 30 days, Vernon Downs Marketing Director
Mark Scalzo said.

He also said two leaders of the racetrack's parent company, Mid-State
Raceway, resigned at a Friday evening meeting of the company's board
of directors. Andrew W. Goodell, the chief executive officer and
president, and board Chairman David Jensen had held their positions
for less than six months.

Both positions were filled by Hoolae Paoa, Scalzo said. Paoa is a
business partner of the track's chief investor, Las Vegas businessman
Shawn Scott, who has lent the track up to $15 million.

Scott has bought 4 percent of the track's stock, lent the track money
and, earlier this year, replaced half of the board of directors with
his own associates, including Jensen.

Monday, the state Racing and Wagering Board rejected the track's
application for a 2003 license and ordered it to shut down at the end
of the month. The board cited the track's history of financial
problems and said it failed to cooperate with regulators.

The track plans to get another hearing before the racing board and
appeal the decision to deny a 2003 license, Scalzo said.

The Mid-State board also decided Friday that, contingent on getting
the license, it would seek to borrow money to move ahead with a plan
to expand and to install as many as 1,200 video lottery terminals.

Among other problems, Vernon Downs owes $823,626 in back taxes to
Oneida County and, as of Oct. 31, had an accumulated deficit of $7.4
million, up from $3.5 million the year before, according to the
racing board.

The track, located in the Oneida County town of Vernon, operates

Changes at the Syracuse Mile
The Buffalo Trotting Association, managing partner of the
Buffalo-Vernon joint venture operating the race meet at the Syracuse
Mile has announced it will not operate the meet at the New York State
Fair in 2003. Instead, the meet will be raced as a non-
wagering "breeders' meet" on August 9 and 10, 2003 and races will be
offered for 2- and 3-year-old New York-breds. A sponsor is also being
sought for the Dr. Harry M. Zweig Memorial Trot for 3-year-olds, but
if none is found prior to January 1, 2003 the race will be cancelled
and all stakes refunded.

Pompano Beach, FL - (December 13, 2002) - Harness driver Wally
Hennessey took the early lead in the opening night of the 3rd annual
All Star Driving Challenge at Pompano Park Harness Track Friday,
winning the 2nd race $2,700 pace with a 17-1 long shot, Ten Sea Seas
($37.40) in 1:58.3.

The 46-year-old reinsman from Coconut Creek, FL was then able to come
back later in the card to barely regain the lead by the end of the
first night of competition, 45 to 44 over Bruce Ranger.
The "Challenge" features five special races each night with nine top
drivers from North America.

Hennessey, who won the competition in 2000, closed out the first
night with 45 points. In second is Bruce Ranger with 44 followed by
David Ingraham 33, Anthony Napolitano 32, George Napolitano, Jr. 31,
Brian Sears 27, Rick Kuebler 16, Steve Warrington 15 and Herve Filion
13.

In the 2nd race, Ranger finished second with Tropic Jazz and David
Ingraham was third with Smokin Laag.

The 4th race $4,600 trot saw Anthony Napolitano win with Cedar Bluff
($11.00) in 2:00 followed by Swift Courier (Wally Hennessey) and Roll-
Away Lucky (Bruce Ranger). With his second place finish, Hennessey
was able to maintain his lead in the "Challenge" but not for long.

In the 5th race $3,500 pace Bruce Ranger and Jazz Hanover ($3.40)
overcame two early lead changes to cut the mile and win in 1:56. It
was the fourth straight win for Jazz Hanover N and the victory put
Ranger back in contention with Hennessey, who was second with Crank
Call and Brian Sears finished third with Lil Orphan Jamie.

The 8th race $4,000 pace saw David Ingraham vault into contention
with Judy In Disguise ($6.00). They made a bold four-wide move on the
final turn to win it all in 1:56.2 over Money Train (Bruce Ranger)
and The Snob N (George Napolitano, Jr.). That gave Ranger the lead by
just one point over Hennessey.

In the 10th race $3,500 pace, which was the final "Challenge" race of
the evening, M Rene Lavec ($7.00) and Brian Sears were able to score
a 2:00.3 triumph with Rose Street Rebel (George Napolitano, Jr.)
second. Hennessey was able to turn the tide for the evening with a
third place finish with Danzig Hanover.

"I'm doing way better than I thought I would going into the races
tonight" Wally Hennessey said. "I had some good post positions and
then got in the right position to get some checks and that helped me
a lot."

The two-night competition continues Saturday with five
more "Challenge" races. The winner receives $3,000 and gets to defend
his title next year, second place pays $1,500 and third place is
worth $1,000.

"Hey, tomorrow I got some live drives and you wait and see." Said
Hall of Famer Herve Filion about being in last place after the first
night. "I just love the competition and getting to see a lot of fans
at the autograph session. But I know I will do better Saturday night!"

Barbara Noble Lady ($36.60) brushed to the lead in the backstretch
for diver George Napolitano, Jr. and scored a 1:55.1 upset victory at
odds of 17-1 in winning the 7th race $9,000 Open Handicap Mares Pace.

Artist Impression (Anthony Napolitano) took the early only to give
way to race favorite Masked Ball (Bruce Ranger) by the opening
quarter mile in :28. Napolitano then came right back to the front
with Artist Impression before the half in :58.1.

But in the backstretch was when Barbara Noble Lady shot to the lead
at the three-quarter in 1:26.2 and started to draw off. The five-year-
old mare by Nobleland Sam won by two and one-quarter lengths over
Masked Ball and Artist Impression. It was her 10th win of the year
for trainer Ira Kreitzer and owner Barbara Kreitzer of West
Alexandria, Ohio.

Pizza Dolce, driven by David Miller, overcame the outside 9th post
position to win the $370,000 Goldsmith Maid Stake for two-year-old
trotting fillies at The Meadowlands on Saturday night.
Pizza Dolce raced in mid pack throughout much of the mile, which was
lead by Stroke Play (Trond Smedshammer) at the :28.2 first quarter
and the :58.1 half. Southwind Allaire moved up on the outside to
challenge Stroke Play after the half and was at the leader's side by
the 1:29.1 three quarters. Pizza Dolce and Miller had moved up from
mid pack by the head of stretch and were angling for racing room.

Stroke Play lead down the stretch, but could not hold off Pizza
Dolce, who won in 1:58.1 by a neck.

Stroke Play (Trond Smedshammer) was second and Southwind Allaire

Montreal, QU --- Before a crowd of over 10,000 spectators, mare Fan
Idole made Italian star Varenne bite the dust in the fourth edition
of the Trot Mondial de Montréal run on Saturday, September 28 at
l'Hippodrome de Montréal.

Since its inception, this classic, which includes the finest trotters
in the world, has always produced a thrilling spectacle, but this
year's race was probably the most hotly contested.

At the start signal our local hopeful, McCooeye, quickly charged into
the lead, but only for a short stay. After a first quarter in :27,
Varenne moved up to take over the lead with Fool's Goal at his side.
From that point on a duel of titans ensued, and the two antagonists
set fractions of :561 and 1:251. Entering the final straight, Fan
Idole, who had held on to fourth place for the greater part of the
competition, went on the attack and easily passed her two exhausted
opponents.

Fan Idole covered the one and three-eighths mile distance in 2:39,
the second best time in the history of the Trot Mondial de Montréal.

Winner of the Prix de France and the Prix de l'Atlantique earlier
this year, Fan Idole is the product of a purely French crossbreed,
and her trainer/driver Richard-William Denéchère has been able to
instill in her the love of competition so that, at seven years of
age, she is at the peak of her art. Last year, the daughter of Le Ham
had finished fourth in the Trot Mondial de Montréal after having
battled right to the finish of the event.

As for Varenne, who is nicknamed "Il Capitano," he finished in second
place behind the winner, but was disqualified for going off course.
So, it is on a sad note that he ends his career, at least in North
America.

Fool's Goal and Grand Farceur were placed second and third to
complete the podium.

Lexington, KY --- Like A Prayer, who's been second in three major
stakes races this year, finally got to be the bride in winning the
$404,000 110th Kentucky Futurity for three-year-old trotting colts in
straight heats on Saturday afternoon at The Red Mile.

The Futurity, third leg of the Trotting Triple Crown, requires the
race winner to win two heats in one day and Like A Prayer won the
first heat in 1:54.4, on the lead from the half on. That victory gave
him the coveted number one position for the second and deciding heat.

In that second heat, Andover Hall and driver Trevor Ritchie trotted
first to the lead, hitting the quarter in :28.3. Living Image (Luc
Ouellette) put up a brief challenge on the backstretch, but Andover
Hall was still on the lead at the :57.1 half and the 1:25.4 three-
quarters.

"I had to let Andover Hall go at the start," said winning driver Ron
Pierce. "I had no intention of trying for the lead down the
backstretch, but I had to get Andover Hall going somehow. I had a big
decision to make on the last turn, I figured I wasn't going to get
out if I sat in, so I had to take a chance. Coming off the last turn
he felt good and strong. This win ranks up there with my wins in the
Hambletonian and the Little Brown Jug. I'm very honored to win this
race."

Andover Hall was second and Civil Action was third. Like A Prayer is
owned by Perfect World Enterprises of Old Westbury, New York and is
trained by Brett Pelling.

The complete order of finish was: fourth - Victory Cruise (Don
Swick); fifth - Malabar Motion (Mal Burroughs); sixth - Living Image
(Luc Ouellette); seventh - ENS Snapshot (George Brennan). Scratches:
Chipmate, Chip Chip Hooray and Magnetic Power.

What Walter Case did in Delaware, Ohio The week of the Little Brown Jug is
Absolute a DISGRACE to the Jug Committee, The USTA, The Breeders, The Owners,
The Trainers, and most importantly our fans.

Whether or not you like Walter Case, Whether or not you think Walter Case, Can
or Can Not drive is hardly the case here !!

I'm not sure how many of you on this list have ever Bought, Bred, Owned or
trained a racehorse, I have , and fortunately have managed to stay afloat.
Besides plunking down the $$'s and taking a huge financial risk, theres the
chance of Injury, Death or perhaps the fact that you just got a dud. You must
also pay staking fee's( The LBJ alone will cost you over $10,000) Off course
that's payed all on speculation, well in advance of not even knowing if your
purchase pans out. Plus the multiple thousands it cost just to get you into
contention for such a race. Theres shipping, Training, Vetwork, Blacksmith,
Feed, and ect ect.

Which brings us back now too the Jug. As an owner and trainer, you`ve finally
made it too the LBJ, your actually one of the lucky 18 or 20, and after 2 long
years or 3, all the up's and all the downs, BUT YOUR HERE !

Now you figure you'll use Walter Case Jr. ( Like him or love him, I'm sorry the
guy can drive a horse. If you say he can't, please tell me how he's racked up
the numbers he has..) So now you decide to put WC on your horse, only to find
out Walter, Doesn't show up !! But at the same time, he shows up to drive his
overnight horses just 70 miles to the North. Your not alone thinking this,
there`s perhaps 50 other trainers and owners wondering also, not to mention the
fans, and all the publicity that goes with The Little Brown Jug.

Walter Case Jr. has proven that he has a talent for driving horse, but
unfortunately, what he might have in talent, he lacks for a Brain. What Walter
did last week was a Slap in the face too all concerns of racing. It was also
disgraceful and inexcusable. Had Walter had used 50 cents and called the judges
to say he wouldn't be there, Yes I'm sure there would be the I told you so's,
and to those of us who knows his character, it wouldn't of been a big surprise.
But the fact is, he didn't even have the common decency and courtesy too do so.
Unfortunately also is the fact that the Judges of Delaware Fairgrounds only
fined him $ 50@ drive amounting to a $ 1200.00 fine. I think it would of been
very justified to have fined him $ 200@ drive like some tracks do resulting in a
5,000.00 fine. Maybe then Walter would pick his head up out of the fog !

IMO that's FAR from IT. Case is the most talented driver I have
ever seen. I watched this guy drive night in, and night out at
Yonkers for years. One year he won 42% of his drives. 42%! That's
Sick! And that was with Luc in the same driver colony. He was light
years better than Luc. Considering Luc has won 3 of the past 4
driving titles at the Meadowlands, Walter can OBVIOUSLY drive against
REAL drivers. Geez, how many drivers better than Luc are in the
sport?
Yes, Walter has serious problems, and issues. But when he's
anything resembling sober, he is as good, or better than anybody
who's ever sat in a sulky. If you've ever seen him go off on one of
his streaks, it's an amazing thing to behold. He'll win 5, 6 races a
night for days on end. He just gets things out of horses, that
nobody else can. Yes, he moves cheap stock ahead much more than he
does with the very top tier horses. But, to say he is only an
excellent driver of cheap stock, is way, way off the mark. He
reminds me a lot of Carmine in his prime. Carmine was better than
anybody at the time with 10k, and 15k claimers. But he sure won his
share of 25k Open Handicaps. So did Walter, except Walter is SO much
better than Carmine ever dreamed of being.
Problem is, Walter likes to hit the bottle and the white stuff.
Which makes him extremely unreliable. It does apear that everytime
he seems on the verge of getting his life back together, he self
destructs. Who knows what goes on in the mind of somebody with that
many demons? But anybody who sees those weaknesses as lack of
talent, is seriously mistaken. It's the same as saying Lawrence
Taylor wasn't an extremely gifted LBer, because he had a drug
problem.
I only hope Walter can come to terms with his demons, before it's
too late.

Walt

Notebook: Case to pay price for missing drives
       Wednesday, September 18, 2002
       Brad Schmaltz
       THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DELAWARE, Ohio -- One of the biggest questions at the Delaware County
Fairgrounds this week has been: Where's Walter Case Jr.?

Case, the second-winningest harness-racing driver in history with more
than 10,000 victories, has not shown up for any of his scheduled drives Sunday,
Monday or yesterday.

Not only that, he hasn't contacted Delaware County Fairgrounds officials.

He was scheduled to drive seven races Sunday, 10 Monday and seven
yesterday.

His absense left trainers scrambling for replacement drivers at the last
minute.

Director of racing Tom Thomson said Case will not be allowed to race
today, Thursday or next year at the Delaware County Fair.

"You can't treat the fans at Delaware like that. No phone calls. No
contact of any kind,'' Thomson said. "He has an obligation to the fans and
owners.''

Presiding judge Tim Schmitz said Case will be fined $50 for every missed
drive the last three days and today. Case already has accumulated $1,200 in
fines, and another $600 will be added today when he's down to drive 12 races.

Case, second only to Herve Filion in career wins, is currently driving at
Northfield Park near Cleveland. He won five races there Monday night.

Schmitz told trainers who expected Case to drive Thursday that they were
to take him off their horses. Schmitz said four trainers resisted, and they, not
Case, will be fined.

Among the races Case will miss will be the $618,625 Little Brown Jug in
which he had drives in all three eliminations.

Case, who has battled alcohol and drug addiction, has missed driving
assignments on several occasions during his 25-year career. In 1997, he was
suspended the entire year.

He had to receive special permission from the Ohio State Racing Commission
before the 1999 season to drive at Northfield.

       Changes galore

The Little Brown Jug Society yesterday made some changes in stake
conditions starting next year.

First, a horse that wins the North America Cup and Meadowlands Pace may
supplement into the Jug, if he's not eligible, for a fee of $45,000. That gives
a horse the chance to continue a quest for the $1 million Grand Slam bonus to
any horse that wins those three races and the Breeders Crown.

Also, the society approved a change in purse distribution that sets aside
20 percent instead of the current 10 percent to the Jug winner.

Forty percent will go to the eliminations and 60 percent into the second
heat.

The change was prompted by Jug winners Blissfull Hall (1999) and Astreos
(2000) receiving less money than second-heat winners Looking For Art and George
Scooter, respectively.
